2015

Dear Pastors, Parish Secretaries and Bookkeepers, and UPCSA Leaders,

This year’s appeal theme is from Philippians 2:1-11. St. Paul is telling us to have in us the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. In this spirit, “United in Heart” focuses the appeal on how our beloved Catholic faith unites us as a diocesan family and empowers us to live out our calling as Disciples of Christ.

This Leadership Manual offers information and strategies to help your parish meet and exceed its UPCSA goal. We hope you find it helpful. If you have questions, suggestions, or would like assistance with your parish appeal in any way, please reach out to us – we are here to help!

It is our privilege to work with you, and we thank you for all that you do to unite your parish with the Diocesan Church to make God’s presence visible in Upper Michigan. Without your work, the diocese could not provide the ministries that are vital to our spiritual and temporal well-being.

With gratitude,

Terri Gadzinski Diocesan Development Director

It is the goal of the diocese to help each parish meet its UPCSA goal. We work with pastors, parish staff and lay leaders to conduct successful parish appeals.

For assistance, please call the Catholic Diocese at 1.800.562.9745 Extension 104 Wendy Negri, UPCSA Coordinator [email protected] Extension 108 Terri Gadzinski, Development Director [email protected]

Prayer for the Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal

Lord Jesus, we thank you for gathering us together as the Church in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are your body, one community of disciples, called to reveal your face to the world.

Help us to grow into a vibrant community, sharing your gospel in word and action, setting our hearts and spending our lives on the kingdom of God as you did. Inspire us to contribute our time, talent and treasure to this holy endeavor with generosity and joy.

Bless us as we support the U.P. Catholic Services Appeal. May our combined resources serve to promote your gospel, Lord Jesus, in ways we cannot realize as individuals. May our everyday lives show forth the light of your face to the people that only we can reach.

Diocese of MarquetteDETERMINING PARISH GOALS FOR THE ANNUAL

UPPER PENINSULA CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL

The following is an explanation of how your parish/mission goal is determined.

1. Proposed budgets are submitted to the Diocesan Finance Council by alldepartments and agencies of the Diocese of Marquette along with expenses for thesupport of missions, special collections, outreach and other needs of the UniversalChurch. Budgets and expenses are reviewed, adjusted, if necessary, and finallyapproved if within guidelines and limitations. Zero balance budgeting is practiced;that is, neither deficit nor surplus is planned. This process determines the total U.P.Catholic Services Appeal goal.

2. Using the Annual Parish Financial Report submitted by each pastor, the number ofcontributing units (envelope holders) based on a three year weighted average foreach parish/mission is divided by the total of all contributing units for the entireDiocese of Marquette. This percentage is multiplied by the total U.P. CatholicServices Appeal goal.

3. The three year weighted average of Assessable Receipts (Sunday & Holyday, loose, children, fuel collections) for each parish/mission divided by the totalAssessable receipts* for all parishes/missions combined is multiplied by the totalU.P. Catholic Services Appeal goal. If loose collection is greater than 25% ofSunday and Holyday receipts combined, then assessable receipts are reduced bythe excess.

4. These two numbers (2 & 3 above) are added together and divided by two to obtainan average. The result is the Parish/Mission Goal for the annual U.P. CatholicServices Appeal.

For example, the goal calculation for a parish with a three year weighted average of 250 Contributing Units (envelope holders) and three year weighted average total assessable income of $105,000 would be calculated as follows, assuming total contributing units of 20,000 and total assessable receipts of $10,000,000:

(2) 250/20,000 (total contributing units for all parishes/missions in the Diocese)= 1.25% x $1,687,676 or $21,096.

(3) $105,000/$10,000,000 (total assessable receipts for all parishes/missions in the Diocese)= 1.05% x $1,687,676 or $17,721

(4) $21,096 + $17,721 = $38,817/ 2 = Parish/Mission Goal $19,408.

*Assessable receipts for parishes supporting Catholic schools are reduced by 100% of thesubsidy amount paid to the school. In the above example, if the parish contributed $10,000 for the support of a Catholic school, their $105,000 in assessable receipts would be reduced by 100% of the $10,000 subsidy, or to $95,000. The net effect would be to reduce their UPCSA goal to $18,565.

Page 6: Diocese of Marquette Upper Peninsula Catholic Services ... · Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal . Leadership Handbook . ... Letter from Diocesan ... we thank you for gathering

DIOCESAN POLICY ON PARISH ASSESSMENT TO SCHOOLS FROM NON-SUBSIDIZING PARISHES:

Parishes that do not subsidize a school are asked to support Catholic Schools through an assessment.

Parish Assessable Receipts %

Less than $50,000 3.00 $ 50,000 - $ 99,999 4.00 $100,000 - $199,999 4.50 More than $200,000 5.00

The assessed amount is based on a percentage of a three year weighted average of parish assessable receipts, based on the formula above. This calculated amount is added to the UPCSA goal for the parishes that currently do not subsidize a school.

Revenue generated by the assessment is distributed equally to all schools.

Revenue generated by this is considered to be an addition to school operating budgets and is not to be considered an offset to parish subsidies for parishes currently supporting schools. Any reduction to existing parish subsidies must be approved by the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools. Up to twenty-five percent (25%) of the revenue generated from this assessment must be set aside by each school to provide transportation assistance to families from non-supporting parishes.

Keys to Appeal Success – Pastor Some parishes in our diocese have a long history of exceeding their UPCSA goal year after year. Recently, we asked pastors from some of these parishes what they felt were the keys to their parish success. Here are their comments:

• Emphasize the Diocesan Church. It’s not the parish’s appeal or the bishop’s appeal. It’sthe “U.P. Catholics” or “Yoopers” appeal! UPCSA is the one time each year that allmembers unite together in support of ministries, programs and services that no single parishcould do on its own.

• Ensure teamwork at the parish. Don’t try to do it all on your own. Appoint an UPCSAcommittee. Divide up all the duties and assign tasks. All work together. Teamwork invitespeople to be involved in important rolls, builds ownership and accountability, and spreadsthe load. “Many hands make light work.”

• Ask. Invite people to join you in supporting UPCSA. Ask with confidence.

• Pick one or two UPCSA-funded ministries or programs to focus on. Talk about theimportance of the ministry, who benefits from it and how.

• Decide, up front, how you will designate the overage from the appeal. Then, talk about itduring the campaign. Inform people early and build anticipation.

• Thank people. Express gratitude in a timely manner, do it often and in a variety of ways –personalized thank you letters, in person when you see people at Mass, from the pulpit, inthe bulletin. Thank ALL who participate by returning the pledge card, even if they give -0-.

Do’s & Don’ts For Pastors

Do 1. Make your own commitment to UPCSA.

2. Review your previous parish UPCSA results, evaluate the approaches that weretaken, determine ways to improve results and develop a plan and strategy thatwill achieve your parish goal.

3. Appoint a coordinator.

4. Involve youth in UPCSA. The annual UPCSA is an opportunity to draw youngpeople into responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholicfaith community.

5. Advance notice from both the pulpit and the parish bulletin so that parishionersare prepared to make a commitment on Appeal weekend.

6. Exhibit a positive, sincere attitude toward the Appeal, its objective, and theparish’s importance to the overall effect.

7. Show the video on Appeal Weekend. Give a motivational homily.

8. Incorporate the campaign theme in all campaign promotions.

9. Ask every parishioner to fill out a pledge card. Emphasize how important theirgift is. Strive for 100% parishioner participation.

10. Encourage people to make a pledge that can be paid in ten monthly payments.

11. THANK EVERYONE.

Don’t 1. Don’t apologize for the annual Appeal.

2. Don’t portray this as a chore or just another arduous talk – this is an opportunityfor stewardship.

3. Don’t assume someone cannot give a gift.

4. Don’t try to justify UPCSA purely in terms of “what’s in it for us?” Instead focuson your parishioners’ willingness to give as Jesus did, without expectingsomething in return.

UPCSA Coordinator Duties As an UPCSA Coordinator, your role is to help your pastor conduct a

successful Appeal as well as help other parishioners grow in awareness that they belong to the wider Catholic Church – the Diocese. You will serve as the link between UPCSA and the people of your parish. Working together with your pastor, your responsibility is to ensure that the necessary steps for success are carried out within the established time frame.

It is important that you familiarize yourself with UPCSA, especially the programs it funds. Make your own pledge early in the Appeal and motivate and guide others to consider their own pledge. Encourage all members of your major parish committees to make a pledge, i.e. Parish Council, Parish Finance Committee, Parish Stewardship Committee, etc.

Coordinator Duties

• Read the Leadership Manual in its entirety.• Follow the timetable.• Familiarize yourself with all of the UPCSA materials.• Recruit a sufficient number of volunteers to assist you.• Assist your pastor in conducting a smooth solicitation for the Appeal.• Make proper use of the program support materials (video, bulletin inserts &

pulpit announcements, brochure, etc.)• Provide opportunities for every parishioner to be able to say “yes” or “no”. Do

not assume that someone cannot give.• Follow internal control and reporting procedures to the UPCSA Office.• Conduct an adequate follow-up to the Appeal Weekend to ensure that your

parishioners have been given every opportunity to give.• Aim for 100% participation – encourage every parish family to return their pledge

card. (even if they are pledging -0-.)

UPCSA can be an opportunity to integrate youth into the life, mission and work of the Church by tapping their time and talents to shape and promote your parish UPCSA appeal! Developing Leadership:

The ministry of Leadership Development calls forth, affirms and empowers the diverse gifts, talents & abilities of adults and young people in our faith communities for comprehensive ministry. Leadership roles in adolescent ministry are key. Leaders must be trained and encouraged. This approach involves a wide diversity of adult and youth leaders in a variety of roles. Many will be involved in direct ministry with adolescents; others will provide support services and others will link the ministry effort to the resources of the broader community.

-from “Renewing the Vision, A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry”, National Conference of Catholic Bishops

Why involve youth: • Young people are the future Church! The annual UPCSA is an opportunity to draw

them into responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faithcommunity.

• It’s a hands-on opportunity to experience the demands, excitement and adventure ofbeing a disciple of Jesus Christ.

• It fosters the total personal and spiritual growth of youth.• It develops intergenerational relationships which provide youth with rich resources to

learn the story of the Catholic faith in the Diocese of Marquette and develop a senseof belonging to the wider Diocesan Church.

• It’s an opportunity to learn the practical side of needing financial resources toaccomplish the lofty mission of our Diocesan Church to promote the Gospel of JesusChrist, to strengthen and share our Catholic faith, and to show forth the light ofChrist’s face to our brothers and sisters.

How to involve youth: A few ideas • The Youth Group could make a contribution in the name of youth ministry.• Consider having a young person provide a lay witness presentation at Mass during

UPCSA kick off weekend. They might talk about a diocesan youth program theyattended or what it means to them to have a pastor and belong to a parish –connecting these things to UPCSA. The Youth Minister or other qualified individualwill need to help the youth prepare the presentation and the pastor may want toapprove it.

• Ask a family to coordinate your parish UPCSA. Challenge them to involve everymember of the family in some meaningful way.

• If you collect UPCSA pledge cards during Mass and/or present pledges with theoffertory, use youth as ushers and gift bearers.

• Organize a youth work bee to help organize pledge cards, stuff envelopes, preparesaddle bags, or other campaign preparatory work.

• Adults who are involved, who have teens, can be encouraged to bring teens along.• Ask them! “How can you be involved in UPCSA?”

Tips for a Successful Appeal1. Start early. Make sure that bulletin announcements, pulpit announcements

and prayers of the faithful are used. Record early gifts that are received fromdiocesan pre-campaign marketing. Then, remove those who have alreadygiven from your parish appeal mailings.

2. Be Prepared. Engage the pastor, parish leadership and parish office staffearly, to plan and clarify the work to be done and who is responsible for doingit. Make good use of the UPCSA Leadership Handbook.

3. Be Enthusiastic. Speak with confidence and pride.

4. Create a positive image. Speak and publish information about UPCSA andthe many ministries and programs that the appeal supports. Make good use of“Gifts at Work” newsletter that is mailed to all households about 2-weeks priorto UPCSA Weekend.

5. Help the people see that their lives are connected with the ministries beingsupported by the Appeal and how they are enriched by them. Pastor or parishshould highlight one or two UPCSA-funded ministries that resonate withhim/the parish.

6. Strive to obtain 100% participation. Stress participation by encouraging apledge card returned from every family. Remember, no gift is too small.

7. Help people see that their gifts make a difference. Their gift-giving shouldbe seen as a way of strengthening the Church and contributing to the well-being of many people. Provide examples of how your parish benefits directlyfrom UPCSA.

8. Encourage pledging instead of one-time gifts. Remind them that they areable to give more by making a pledge and paying in ten payments. TheUPCSA Office will send reminder statements from December throughSeptember.

9. Utilize all campaign materials provided:a. Leadership Handbook (at www.dioceseofmarquette.org)b. Brochurec. Bulletin Insertd. Pledge cards and envelopese. Bulletin and pulpit announcements

12

Page 13: Diocese of Marquette Upper Peninsula Catholic Services ... · Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal . Leadership Handbook . ... Letter from Diocesan ... we thank you for gathering

f. Prayers of the faithfulg. Lay Witness Presentation

10. If your parish collects pledge envelopes during mass, bring them to thealtar as part of the Offertory procession, recognizing that the pledgesare also a gift to God.

11. Thank people. Qualities of an amazing thank you note:a. Be personal. First things first! Create a personal, warm and authentic

message. People expect you to have open, honest and authenticrelationships with them. Don’t think of thank you letters as a drudgery –use it as an opportunity to be creative and connect with people.

b. Be tangible. Connect the donor with what they have invested into theUPCSA. It is not enough to say, for example, “Thank you for your gift toUPCSA.” Show exactly how their donation is make a difference; tell a storyto help demonstrate the impact of their gift, for example, “Bishop JohnDoerfler will ordain two new priests to our diocese this year, DeaconBrandon Oman and Deacon Bradley Sjoquist, thanks to your support ofseminarian formation through the UPCSA.”

c. Be timely. The sooner the donor receives a thank you, the better. If theadministrative work load is heavy and letters won’t go out for a few weeks, consider other ways to thank people in the interim – a quick email, phonecall, personally thank them when you see them at Mass, pulpit and bulletinannouncements.

d. Be donor-centric. Be mindful of the fact that our donors make ministryhappen in the church; they should get credit for the work that they do.Don’t just talk about what “the diocese” does with money as if it wassomehow outside of the parish work and the investment of the people. Theidea is they donor made this possible, they get the credit. Rather than,“Thank you for your gift, here are all the great things we did,” try “Thankyou for your gift, here are some great things YOU did.”

12. Prominently display parish progress toward the dollar and donorgoals & keep the information up-to-date. The progress thermometer included in this handbook can be enlarged to poster size and displayed in your parish entry. Update it weekly!

13. Conduct a comprehensive follow-up. Continue to provideopportunities for parishioners to pledge. Don’t give up on them.

14. Emphasize Stewardship. Each of us has been blessed by God.UPCSA is an opportunity to return some of those blessings to God in gratitude and help build the kingdom on earth.

13

Stewardship Focus The 1992 U.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Stewardship states: “Mature

disciples make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost to themselves.

A Christian steward is one who received God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.

The life style of stewardship invites our response to God’s love by our willingness to share a portion of our time, our abilities, and our material possessions for God’s work in our parishes, our diocese, and the Universal Church.

To return to God a just portion of our many blessings is a practical application and a real demonstration of our Christianity. We are merely custodians, not owners, of our material goods. What we return to God through His Church will be returned to us many times over.

The U.P. Catholic Services Appeal is an opportunity to return some of those blessings to God in gratitude. We, as church, are called to share a portion of our gifts and to combine them with the gifts of others so that the work of the Kingdom of God can be furthered through the ministries of the Church.

The diocesan Stewardship program suggests the following based on the biblical concept of tithing:

5% to your parish 1% to the annual U.P. Catholic Services Appeal 4% to other charities

The “take a step” approach encourages parishioners to incrementally increase their giving toward the goal of giving 1% of annual income. Below is a guideline for giving based on the 1% giving to UPCSA. Pledging is encouraged, making the gift more manageable to some families. The UPCSA Office will send reminder statements from December through September.

Annual 10 payments Income 0.25% Gift 0.50% Gift 0.75% Gift 1.00% Gift of 1.00% Gift $12,000 $30 $60 $90 $120 $12 $15,000 $38 $75 $113 $150 $15 $30,000 $75 $150 $225 $300 $30 $45,000 $113 $225 $338 $450 $45 $60,000 $150 $300 $450 $600 $60 $90,000 $225 $450 $675 $900 $90

The Blitz: One UPCSA Campaign Strategy Named after a football defensive game strategy, “the blitz” method of conducting the UPCSA has been used successfully by American Martyrs in Kingsford for many years. It borrows a few concepts from the popular fall sport. Namely, teamwork (pastor, parish secretary and team of parishioners with a well thought-out game plan); and a strategy that proceeds at high speed (the appeal is conducted in just two weekends, and follow-up with those not responding happens immediately.) The workers’ meeting is the tailgate party. Over pizza and beverages, the UPCSA Committee provides workers with the names of parish families that have not yet returned pledge cards for personal follow up, and the meeting ends in time to get home to watch the Packers on television!

HOW TO CONDUCT “THE BLITZ” Mid-August UPCSA materials received and reviewed with Pastor.

Early to Mid

Contact and confirm UPCSA Parish Chairpersons & UPCSA Committee, which is normally the President of the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council, plus six other members, together with the Pastor. This team reviews the parish list and telephones the workers to get them to come to the Workers Meeting on Sunday evening on weekend #2 (explained below). Each year a few new workers should be recruited.

each September

UPCSA Committee meets to assign names from the parish roster to committee member to call and invite to the Workers Meeting. The of workers needed depends on the number of anticipated follow-up calls to be made. Ideally, one worker for every two follow-up calls to be made. At this time, assignments can also be made to collect pledge cards after each of the Masses on Weekend #2 (ideally 4 or 5 for each Mass.)

number

WEEKEND #1

Pledge Cards Distributed

Pastor speaks briefly from the pulpit at Mass after communion. (2-3 minutes only) He tells a joke about money to get people laughing (for example, “Good news – we’ve made our parish UPCSA goal! Bad news – the money is still in your pockets!) He highlights one or two things that UPCSA funds and gives a personal witness (for example, “I wouldn’t be a priest if it wasn’t for UPCSA and the diocese supporting my seminarian education.”) He tells the people that all monies raised over the parish goal come back to the parish, and may mention a specific parish need or project that the overage (the amount raised over goal) will be applied to. Finally, he informs the people that UPCSA pledge cards are to be picked up after Mass in the back of church and returned the next weekend at the coffee socials following Mass. Everyone is asked to return a pledge card.

Envelopes containing pledge card, letter from Pastor and brochure are put in the back of church in alpha order for parishioners to pick up after Mass.

Monday Envelopes still in the back of church get mailed first thing Monday morning.

Page 16: Diocese of Marquette Upper Peninsula Catholic Services ... · Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal . Leadership Handbook . ... Letter from Diocesan ... we thank you for gathering

16

WEEKEND #2

Pledge Cards Returned

This is combined with a coffee social after all weekend Masses. At the end of Mass, the pastor invites all to attend coffee social and to return their pledge card to one of the workers. The aroma of hot, homemade cinnamon/pecan rolls helps to entice people to attend the social. Four or five UPCSA Committee members or workers are needed per Mass help to collect the pledge cards. All pledge cards that are returned are crossed off the parish roster, including those that are not giving any money.

Sunday afternoon Parish secretary meets with Pastor to determine who has not yet returned a pledge card. To organize this process, the secretary prepares an index card for every registered family that can be used every year. A mailing label with name and address is affixed to the card and the phone number is added. There is one card for every family. Cards are arranged in alpha order. For every family that has returned a pledge card, the index card is removed from the pile. The pastor and secretary review the remaining cards. Some names may be confidentially removed due to special circumstances, or set aside for the pastor to contact personally. The remaining index cards are ready to be assigned for follow-up.

Sunday Evening Workers Meeting

All workers must sign in and are provided with a sheet of paper to write on. Pizza and beverages are served first. Notes are kept on how many people attend the Workers Meeting and how many pizzas to order.

After pizza, Council members read the names from the index cards, one by one, and workers are asked to volunteer to take at least 2 names for follow up. Workers are coached to take people they know or work with, and to make a personal telephone call, reminding the person to return their pledge card the next weekend. The worker takes the index card, writes the name and telephone number on their blank sheet of paper, and returns the index card to the council member. The index cards are recycled for the next year. Workers are asked to take their list of names and make their follow-up calls within one week. They are to return their sheet to the parish office to confirm that the follow-up calls have been made. Many of the workers make the follow-up telephone calls that evening.

NEXT 2-3 WEEKENDS

Thank those who have responded. Report in the parish bulletin the number of families that have pledged to UPCSA and the total amount raised. Continue to encourage 100% participation. May display the Thermometer of Parish Campaign Progress (from the UPCSA Leadership Manual) in a visible place and update it regularly.

Page 17: Diocese of Marquette Upper Peninsula Catholic Services ... · Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal . Leadership Handbook . ... Letter from Diocesan ... we thank you for gathering

17

Notes: • Thank You letters are prepared for the pastor’s signature for all pledges of $100.00 or

more. Letters are segmented with a slightly different message for those who gave $100-$499 and for those who gave $500 or more.

• It will take several years to develop “The Blitz” into a robust and effective strategy; staythe course! Aim to increase participation level – pledge card returned from every family.

• This is not a hard sell.• Emphasize that this is the “Yoopers” appeal – U.P. Catholics (not the bishop’s appeal; not

a parish appeal-although the parish does benefit!)• The appeal will be successful when parishioners are active and involved in the life of the

parish, when the pastor is present and leads the parish community, when the UPCSAcommittee is empowered, and when the appeal is presented in a positive manner.

Tips for UPCSA Mass Presentation

The most important part of your presentation will be a personal story about how a diocesan ministry has touched your life and made a difference.

Mention the theme for this year’s appeal: “United in Heart”

To help create general awareness of all that UPCSA supports, please briefly mention the four main areas of support below.

1. Vocations & Pastoral Outreach – support for seminarian education, marriage tribunal, office of worship and deacon formation.

2. Evangelization – funding for campus ministry, Marygrove Retreat Center, prison ministry, diocesan communications, office of the Bishop, donationsthat support the world-wide Catholic mission.

3. Catholic Social Services – working to nurture, stabilize and strengthendiverse families of the Upper Peninsula in the spirit of God’s universal love.

4. Faith Formation & Education – Equipping 94 parishes and missions and 9Catholic schools with tools and strategies to effectively teach the Catholicfaith.

Thank you!

Sample UPCSA Presentation

Did you know that 1,649 people received help and healing through Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula counseling services for mental health treatment and addiction recovery? That over 30 children each month were placed in an adoptive or foster care home and given an opportunity to know God’s love in a safe, nurturing home?

Did you know that since 1948 people have been going to Marygrove Retreat Center, located in the Garden Peninsula between Escanaba and Manistique, for peaceful retreats to pray, renew relationships, and re-energize their faith?

Did you know that about 1,250 students receive outstanding Pre-K through 8th grade education at nine Catholic Schools that dot the perimeter of the Upper Peninsula, and over 5,000 more elementary, middle and high school students receive religious education instruction in our diocese’s 94 parish faith formation programs?

Or, that the average annual cost to educate and form a seminarian for our diocese is $40,000? And, that currently the Diocese of Marquette is providing financial assistance to 9 men who are preparing for the priesthood?

These are just some of the ministries that are supported through the Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal, or UPCSA.

A little closer to home, here at _________ Parish, we receive a number of support services from our diocese that help us to administer our parish more efficiently, to worship more deeply, and to form our parish families more completely. Our pastor, Fr. _______, is supported mainly by our parish community. But he also receives valuable support and services from our diocese, including continuing education and training opportunities. Our parish catechists and secretary/bookkeeper have access to ongoing learning workshops and support services through the diocese.

Even if you have not been touched personally by any of the ministries or programs that I’ve mentioned, you should know that when you support UPCSA, you are helping others in countless ways. UPCSA unites our Catholic family in heart and in mission by funding ministries that reach well beyond what we can do here at __________ Parish.

It is truly an exciting time to be a Catholic! Especially here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where so much is happening to engage people in a variety of ministries and initiatives to deepen and strengthen their faith.

Please join me in generous support of this year’s U.P. Catholic Services Appeal. Your prayers and your donations are needed. Any amount our parish raises over its goal comes back to our parish for our own needs. We ask every family to return a pledge card – even if you are not able to make a donation this year - so that we can achieve 100%participation from all of our parishioners.

May God bless you for your stewardship. Thank you.

Page 25: Diocese of Marquette Upper Peninsula Catholic Services ... · Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal . Leadership Handbook . ... Letter from Diocesan ... we thank you for gathering

25

Faith Formation & Education. Faith formation and education ministries bring the church together in a spirit of collaboration and unity, forming hearts and minds. UPCSA funds diocesan ministries that support parish catechesis, youth ministry and adult faith formation in 94 parishes and missions. The superintendent’s office oversees the diocese’s nine Catholic schools, which educate and form over 1,250 pre-K through 8th grade students annually. Parishes that do not directly subsidize a school participate in our Catholic schools ministry through an assessment, which is included in their parish UPCSA goal. For more information or to register your child(ren) in one of our Catholic schools, visit www.dioceseofmarquette.org/catholic schools.

Catholic Social Services. All programs and services of Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula promote the teachings of the Catholic Church and God’s universal love. Last year CSSUP helped heal 1,649 of your neighbors, friends and family members through our counseling services for mental health treatment and addiction recovery. Our adoption and foster care services gave over 30 children each month an opportunity to know God’s love in a safe, nurturing home with loving parents. Our re-entry facility supported numerous young men as they returned after incarceration to become productive citizens in their community. With your support we can continue to provide care with dignity and instill hope to all we serve.

Evangelization. To evangelize is to make the kingdom of God present in our world. Some of the local evangelizing ministries that receive UPCSA support include the bishop’s ministry as he participates in parish celebrations throughout the diocese, support and assistance to priests and women religious, Marygrove Retreat Center and campus ministry. Diocesan communication services inform, evangelize and educate through all forms of media including the diocesan website and social media. Evangelizing ministry is extended world-wide when the diocese makes donations to the Holy See, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Panama Mission to aid the poor.

Vocations & Pastoral Outreach. The diocesan vocations program works to inspire priestly vocations that sustain the Catholic Church in the U.P. Substantial support is provided through UPCSA for the education of seminarians who are preparing to serve in our diocese. Support is provided to parishes to strengthen their local leadership and organizational structures. Other areas of outreach include the tribunal and chancellor’s offices, assist individuals with church legal and canonical matters such as marriage annulments.

Sample Appeal Letter from the PastorTo all parishioners. Personalize the message to your parish as much as possible.

(use parish letterhead) Suggested Mail Date: Mail on the Monday prior to UPCSA Weekend

Date

Name NOTE to pastor: when you tell people what your Address average parish UPCSA gift was last year, they will City/State/Zip respond more generously if they can. If the diocesan

average gift of $198.27 is higher than your parish average, consider using it instead.

Dear _________,

100% Participation! That is our parish goal this year for the annual “Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal!”

United in faith, we join with our Catholic brothers and sisters across the Upper Peninsula as generous stewards of our Church. I ask that every parish family complete and return a pledge card. Your gifts support the work of the Church in the Upper Peninsula.

Some parishioners responded early, already pledging a total of $_______ toward our parish goal of $____________. 100% participation will help to ensure that we reach our goal. All monies collected above and beyond our parish goal come directly back to our parish. This coming year, the Parish Finance Council and I have decided that all monies returned to the parish from UPCSA will be used for __________________________________________________________.

The education of seminarians, training of catechists, and social services that promote the teachings of the Catholic Church are just a few of the important ministries funded through UPCSA. New this year, UPCSA will cover 100% of the cost of marriage annulments, making it easier for those in need to receive this healing and reconciling ministry.

How much should you give? That is between you and God. I simply ask that you prayerfully consider how God is calling you to respond to this appeal, and respond to the best of your ability. Last year our average family gift to UPCSA was $______. Many payment options are offered for your convenience. Please selection an option that works for you and helps you to be as generous as possible. If circumstances prevent you from making a financial commitment this year, please indicate a generous gift of prayer on the pledge card. Remember, the Lord can never be outdone in generosity!

Please return your UPCSA pledge card as soon as possible. God bless you for your faithful stewardship.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Reverend Localpastor

History of the Catholic Church in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

The Catholic history of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan dates back to the French exploration of the Upper Great Lakes. Jesuit missionaries of the 17th Century such as Mesnard, Jogues, Allouez, Raymbault, and Marquette touched the shores and spoke the Word of Christ to the Indians. At this time, Northern Michigan was part of the Diocese of Quebec.

The modern history of the Church in the Upper Peninsula began in 1832, when Father Frederic Baraga crossed Lake Michigan from Cross Village to Indian Lake near Manistique. In 1843, Baraga went from LaPointe, Wisconsin to present day Assinins, Michigan. He worked here until 1853. In that year, he was consecrated Bishop, moving to Sault Ste. Marie and later, in 1866, to Marquette. In May of 1866, the “Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette” was authorized. During Baraga’s years the Church grew from a church in mission to Native Americans to a Church with many ethnic groups.

The first Sister arrived in Sault Ste. Marie in 1853. In the diocese’s long history, many communities of religious women have served here. Ursuline Sisters, Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondolet, Sisters of Saint Agnes, Franciscan Sisters, and other communities have given strong witness to the Gospel in the Upper Peninsula. Countless lay men and women have also shaped our Church. Currently, there are permanent deacons, an active lay ministry leadership school, and an institute of theology. Through Cursillo, Legion of Mary, Saint Vincent de Paul, and countless other parish organizations, lay people are serving all over the diocese.

The Most Reverend John F. Doerfler was ordained and installed as the thirteenth Bishop of the Diocese of Marquette on February 11, 2014.
