PRAYER FOR HEALING

VICTIMS OF THE ABUSE

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them.

Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you.We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Page 5: Diocese of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish 1857 1886 · 2018-09-07 · Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish Mission Statement: Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit,

Dear brothers and sisters,

Prejudice is by no means a new problem in society. Saint James noticed it in the first century Christian community of Jerusalem. . In today’s second reading, Saint James scolded those who give preferential treatment to the rich while overlooking the poor. He tells them that they have it all backwards. It is the poor who are privileged because they were the ones chosen by God “to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom.” Just as God makes no distinction between rich and poor, Jew or Greek, man or woman, so we should treat all people with the dignity they deserve as sons and daugh-ters of our Father in heaven.

We are called to do the same. Because all of us have been created in the image and likeness of God, we all have digni-ty. Our worth as human beings does not come from our religious tradition, our ethnic background, our job or our social standing. Rather, each of us is worthy of respect be-cause we are loved by the one God who is Father of us all.

Points for reflection:

1. How do I prevent the culture of indifference in my par-ish, in my community, at my work?

2. Do I treat people with dignity they deserve as sons and daughters of our Father in heaven? How?

Blessed Sunday to all!

Fr. Gerome D. Hernandez, MSP

A s we observe the passion and death of Jesus, we must remember that no one ethnic or religious group of

people is responsible for the death of our Savior. He died voluntarily for the sins of all people “at the hands of evildo-ers” so that we might be saved from eternal death. The use of the words “the Jews” (or similar expressions) in the gos-pel accounts of Christ’s death does not mean that the Jew-ish people killed Jesus. In the Gospel of John, for example, it is not even clear who “the Jews” that seek Jesus’ death are. Certainly Jesus, his mother Mary, the apostles, and most, if not all of the disciples, are also “the Jews.” In fact, everyone in the gospel account except Pilate, his wife, and his soldiers are Jews. (Simon was probably a Jew from Cyre-ne, perhaps in Jerusalem for the holy day. And scripture tells us that Joseph of Arimathea was “a disciple of Jesus,” but it

doesn’t necessarily mean that he wasn’t Jewish—he owned a grave in Jerusalem.) To think that the gospel means that the Jewish people—then and now—are responsible for the death of Jesus (and thus today are to be coerced to convert, blamed or condemned) is wrong. It is sinful to twist the sa-cred scriptures for any purpose of hate, bigotry or prejudice. It is better to recall the words of the prophet Isaiah that we hear on Good Friday: “He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins...the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.”

THE GUILT OF US ALL

PENANCE AND FASTING: As our response to the invitation of Bp. Jaime Soto “to earnestly draw ourselves more closely to the Lord Jesus and offer penance in reparation for the sin and suffering that has been inflicted on the Church by brother priests and bishops”, our Holy Hour every Friday for this month of September will be offered for the reparation of sin and for the healing of victims of sexual abuse. All Fridays this month of September will be a day of fasting and I would like you to invite others to do so. Corporal works of Mercy are highly encouraged.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2018: This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 16, 2018. The 2018 theme will be "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth

to be commissioned for their ministry during the 10:30 am Sunday Mass.

Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
