DIORAMA - OPEN HOUSE

As Australia’s population continues to increase, our inner cities are being redeveloped to higher densities than ever before. As more Australians choose inner city living the more public services are needed, and for less space. This Urban School is an example of a mixed use high-rise building that incorporates a high school for 1000 students along with office and retail spaces.

BRIEFMelbourne’s CBD, like many cities all over the world, attracts and creates a population of disenfranchised citizens. It also creates an environment of social disconnect and civil inattention. While one work of architecture can never hope to fix a problem so ingrained in society I believe it can create a framework for change; a change to create connections.

This design uses food, the studio’s theme, as a social catalyst to bring people together. Much like Lentil as Anything this would be a community supported organisation. Like your local community or school hall this is also a space for gathering, teaching, performing and festivities; to facilitate social connections.

The final level of this design is emergency accommodation and space for a social worker or custodian to operate from. This is not trying to be a solution to the problem or a long term arrangement, just a resource to help those in need and enable meaningful connections.

The first element is heavy, masonry, supportive, durable, and protective. This darker element houses the service areas of the brief and is both sunken into and built out of the very material of the street. This is an extension of the street plane. It is bluestone. It is shelter and it is a symbolic gateway.

The second element is the living bridge that connects the stone service pillars. This timber floating and interlocking volume lifts the living spaces above the street to a vantage of prospect and refuge; safety without disconnection.

The third and final element is the Refectory. This delicately gridded glass and steel volume fills the voids between the two solid elements.

Here the bluestone elements emanate a cool durability that is offset by the warmth of the timber soffit. The stadium seating to the west allows a unique prospect and refuge effect while creating an opportunity for presentations and performances.

In winter there is a single solid timber door that signifies the entrance. And at night Open House gives back light to the laneways, making them safer and announcing its presence.

The classic proportions have been embed into the design, not as an exercise in geometry, but as an exercise in integrating a level of experiential quality in the design from day one.

The main dining space is directly in front of the open galley kitchen and creates a larger than life kitchen table to the masses in a grand gesture of home and hearth.

URBAN SCHOOL - MONTAGUE

As Australia’s population continues to increase, our inner cities are being redeveloped to higher densities than ever before. As more Australians choose inner city living the more public services are needed, and for less space. This Urban School is an example of a mixed use high-rise building that incorporates a high school for 1000 students along with office and retail spaces.

Access to natural light and ventilation, on such a wide (44m) block, and theories of visual connection stimulating community feelings informed this open air atria.

The setback on level 5, assisted by the large atria, creates the threshold of two distinctly different spaces.

The ground floor is a permeable mass that creates a public gathering space protected from strong winds

Scale - 1:500

The site was 88m long and dominated a major intersection. This meant that it was imperative to break up the urban form.

Changing privacy and shading requirements across the building informed this collage effect on the facade. Perforated steel, glass, and masonry walls with delicate openings responded to those needs.

While the main atria primarily delivers sunlight and ventilation

to the building, the secondary courtyard affords a better

quality of solar access to the southern neighbour

PARTICIPATORY HOUSING - NORTH MELBOURNE

Bright awnings create a more human scale while protecting from the elements and adding interest to the facade.

A modular ‘kit of parts’ has been developed to enable customisation of the facade while maintaining the aesthetic.

Higher density residences are often not designed with family life in mind and once you own an apartment it is very difficult to change the layout to suit lifecycle or generational changes. This studio proposes medium density housing without the loss of control: participatory housing. Housing where the owner continues to be able to change the size, layout and appearance.

Roof gardens on three different levels provide a private alternative to the more public parks.

Every ‘cassette’ is approx. 90m2 and is either one or two storeys. Example layouts for each ‘cassette’ types provide templates for six different family group types.

PAVILLION LIVING - A HOUSE FOR LIFE

Daniel Marks 2012 Competition - Honourable Mention 1. As of April 2013 the design will be for sale on their website- www.danielmarks.com.au

“A beautifully presented and highly resolved scheme, the jury acknowledged the obvious time spent on the scheme which was judged to appeal to a wide audience. By focussing the main living areas on the central courtyard (great for young children) the scheme could work successfully on a variety of sites and orientations. The scheme is flexible and adaptable; it would be suitable for a number of different target occupants.” (Judges Citation)

The street view is a modest but modern with timber and concrete.

The light central courtyard connects the two wings of the house

Integrated storage is a key element of this design. A beautiful light plywood joinery unit brings warmth to the living spaces.

Integrated eaves and careful placement of windows allow enough light without compromising privacy or efficiency.

A pool with access to both a bathroom and laundry, with space for parents to sit, makes this a functional luxury.

WORK EXPERIENCE - COLIN STEWART ARCHITECTS

Over the past two years working at CSA I have gained a better understanding of ratios in facade design, material interaction, and technical building design. This experience has given me a strong foundation in design principles, communication and application. The works you see here are a sample of my more independent and creative tasks.
