3B Ergonomics - The Science of Fitting the Job to the Worker from A Former OSHA Leader’s PerspectiveTom Bielema, Safety Controls Technology (SCT)Almost every job out there requires repetitive physical motion. Whether it be in the office, on a construction site, or in manufactur-ing, most jobs require that one muscle group receives more exer-tion than the rest. Because of this, a worker can develop a MSD or Musculoskeletal Disorder, or other harmful, long-term effects fromtheir jobs. Learn the “ins and outs” of ergonomics, which aims to prevent damage to worker’s bodies caused by repetitive movement. This session can help educate your team about ergonomics and its importance in the workplace, based on over 20 years of investigat-ing MSDs. Make the work fit the person, not the person fit the work.

Breakout Session 4 • 12:40 - 1:30 p.m.

Breakout Session 5 • 1:50 - 2:40 p.m.5A Leading vs. Managing: How does the Workforce View Your Role?Scott Clarkson, Chief Safety ServicesRegardless of your position within a company, you have the ability to influence others, therefore, leading them. In this session, we will discuss the fundamental differences between being a Safety Manager and a Safety Leader. Leaders have followers and manag-ers have workers. 5C Ageonomics - Enhancing the Workplace for the Aging WorkerCarol Ungaretti, Aon Risk Solutions“Ageonomics” is a term coined by Aon casualty and safety consul-tants to describe a scientific discipline concerned with the inter-action of the aging worker in relation to the workplace and work environment within which they operate. Ageonomics incorporates core disciplines of human factors, ergonomics, wellness, benefit program design, health and safety to assess, understand and ultimately optimize the systems for greater individual and organi-zational impact. The Ageonomic approach not only creates a safer workplace for aging workers, but helps employers reduce work-place injuries, decrease employee leave time, and offers risk and financial leaders a means of identifying loss cost metrics to better manage absenteeism and ultimately drive down the total cost of casualty risk and overall medical expenses.

4B Amputations & OSHA Fines: How to Prevent Both with a Lockout/Tagout Program that will Pass OSHA’s TestNick Walters & Tom Bielema, Safety Controls Technol-ogy (SCT)Lockout/tagout related violations are continuously in OSHA’s Top 10 year after year and are the source of countless amputations, which leads to increased direct and indirect costs for employers. Former OSHA leaders, Nick Walters and Tom Bielema will share over 50 years of combined experience investigating hundreds of incidents that resulted in fatalities or amputations, along with their experience as private consultants developing procedures, provid-ing training, and performing periodic inspections on thousands of machines. 3C Identifying the Root Cause in an Incident Investiga-tion: Beyond RetrainingMary Hallock, IMECRe-training individual(s) involved in an incident or near miss is a frequent solution in our investigations. Often the person has been trained and understood the training. However, there was some-thing else that got in their way. As supervisors we must understand the person and treat them as an individual to help them under-stand the WHY - the root cause of the problem - that keeps them from applying their safety training skills.

3D Safety & Health LeadershipGerald Cunningham, Illinois OSHAThis session will address leadership characteristics, responsibility, accountability and staff functions along with systems for imple-menting an effective program. Jerry will address the concept of control and the relationship to incident rates. If you are looking for a way to improve your safety and health system, this is the session for you.
