The rationale of the courses offered

Languages

Italian, Japanese, French and German are offered for study in the General Studies Diploma. Skill in communication is one of the foremost aims of the teaching of foreign languages in this college. With this in mind, Swinburne has established a we!I equipped language laboratory, and plans are in hand for additional laboratories to be built in the near future. The practical nature of the training in languages should be of interest to industry and commerce. The languages offered, in association with the social sciences and humanities, will be of great value to government departments, as well as those business executives, journalists, travel agents and many others who have contact with overseas countries, or who may be going to live in countries speaking the languages offered.

Psychology

The courses offered are designed to acquaint students with the nature, significance and techniques of modern psychology, so that they are familiar with the study and analysis of human behaviour .

Theoretical knowledge is applied, as the course progresses, in areas such as Organisation Psychology. In this way it is intended

that successful candidates will be fitted for personnel, marketing, training and counselling roles in industry and commerce. In addition, the insight gained would be of great value to people in other occupations.

Sociology

Sociology is concerned with order and disorder in society. I ts aim is to provide a framework for the analysis of social life.

Sociology inquires into questions such as social status and income differences between people, how these are expressed and what effects they have on the total social system. It is also concerned with organisational structures and goals, social values, education, recreational practices, deviant behaviour and social change.

The compulsory studies, already outlined, are supported and reinforced by subjects selected from the following fields of study: -

Humanities and Social Sciences

A wide range of subjects is available for those who are interested in modern government, history, Asian studies, literature, or philosophy. *In Asian Studies the cultures and current economic and political aspects of South East Asia, East Asia and India are examined within a historical framework. *In modern government the department offers courses in Australian Government, international relations, international organisations, political theory, political sociology and public administration. _ The emphasis is on contemporary studies of political problems related to the social and economic problems of the societies studied. The courses, though based on Australian practices, offer a wide comparative and analytical study of problems with common elements.

* The range of studies in the history field is also indicative of the role which this college sees for its graduates in our society.

*Contemporary Asic!n history is related to Australian affairs, as is contemporary history, which deals with the problems accompanying

• the growth of affluent societies in the USA and Australia.

*Studies in literature include modern English

and European writers, works of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, and, in the final stage, American and Australian literature. The course serves both to illustrate and comment on social change, and to introduce students to imaginative means of describing and examining human experience.

*Students may also interest themselves in the history and philosophy of science, or a course in philosophy based on the ideas of man about himself, his world and his values.

Communication studies

Study methods and efficient reading, taken in the first year, gives students help in their study methods, their speed of reading and comprehension . Those who are interested in improving their skill in the field of cumminication studies can follow additional, more advanced, courses after the first year.

In addition to subjects such as linguistics, statistics, and typing, students, may, with the approval of the Department, include subjects offered by other departments in their General Studies course.
