Let’s Talk Subjects and Verbs
• Every sentence has a subject– The subject is either a noun,
pronoun, or noun phrase– The subject is a person, place,
thing, or idea that is doing the action of the verb
– Sometimes subjects are understood rather than stated

• The verb can be an action verb
• It can also be a linking verb
• Verbs have a tense– Past, Present, or Future
• Think of a verb as the hub of the sentence that everything else rotates around

• Below is a simple sentence. It has one subject and one verb. The verb is underlined.
Tom threw the ball.
• Notice that the verb is tucked away in the middle of the sentence.

What is a Direct Object?
• A Direct Object is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that receives the action of the verb.
• Let’s look at that same sentence again.
Tom threw the ball.

What is a Direct Object?
• Because a Direct Object is a noun or pronoun, it answers the question “who?” or “what?”
• In this case, what did Tom throw?
Tom threw the ball.
• ball is the Direct Object
