IMPROVED ECONOMICS
One-pass seeding systems, where seed and all fertiliser is applied together in one field operation,
bring improved economics and profitability. In direct seeding systems, many farmers reduce fuel use by one-third
to one-half. Similar savings in time, labour and equipment depreciation further reduce costs.
Numerous studies have found that yields in one-pass seeding systems are usually as good as or better than
conventional tilled fields. In drier conditions, yields are also more stable because of better moisture conservation,
and with that increased moisture, many farmers find they can grow different crops in their rotation.
DIRECT SEEDING CHALLENGES MET
Direct seeding evolved in the 1980s and 1990s in semi-arid areas around the world because farmers were looking
for a better, more sustainable farming method. Gradually, a few innovative farmers developed a system of one-pass
seeding called direct seeding or zero-tillage, and they changed the face of agriculture like never before.
Every time a tillage pass is eliminated, ½” to 1” of valuable soil moisture is conserved. Standing stubble virtually
eliminates wind and water erosion. Soil tilth improves, and with the integration of more crops into the rotation, soil
fertility and productivity increase. Seed Hawk helps farmers meet the challenge head on, with equipment designed
for one-pass seeding operations that do not compromise seed or fertiliser placement.
PRECISION SEEDING
Around the world, farmers have always been driven to develop seeding systems that are profitable and sustainable.
With first-hand experience of the challenges seen by early innovators in direct seeding over 20 years ago, Seed
Hawk set out to design a seeding system that could address the demands of all farmers: improved residue
clearance, precise seed and fertiliser placement, and on-row packing.
Today, Seed Hawk seeding systems are the industry leader in precise seed and fertiliser placement. With a selection
of seed knives, air tanks and fertiliser configurations, Seed Hawk systems deliver size, flexibility and precision –
three key benefits that allow you to cover more ground more quickly.
THE ONE-PASS SEEDING SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
PRECISION SEEDING
SUCCESS COMES FROM SOUND AGRONOMICSWhat makes Seed Hawk the leader in emergence? Simply put: it’s Seed Hawk’s deep knowledge of agronomics. Seed Hawk understands that in order to get the best crop possible, it has to start out right, with shallow, accurate seeding and optimum fertiliser placement.
ACCURATE, SHALLOW SEEDING
• Placing the seed close to the surface promotes fast, uniform germination and
boosts yield and grade.
• Minimum tillage provides more moisture so shallow seeding is possible to speed
up germination.
• The furrow effect places seed in the optimum position for access to fertiliser,
moisture and sunlight.
• Independent, hydraulically controlled, 4” wide packer wheels pack and seal the
furrows to prevent moisture loss.
• Quick, even emergence delivers a crop that can compete with weeds, makes
crop staging for herbicide and fungicide applications easy, and promotes even
maturity across the whole field for easier harvesting.
OPTIMUM FERTILISER PLACEMENT
• When using either the single sideband or the Twin Wing knife system, fertiliser is
placed close enough to the seed to promote early season uptake, but far enough
away to avoid seedling damage.
• In phosphate (P) sensitive crops (such as canola, flax and peas), P can be safely
sidebanded and still generate the pop-up effect – something that P banded
between the seed rows cannot provide.
• Precision fertiliser placement means more nutrients are available to the plant
through the growing season, to feed the crop and not the weeds.
PRECISION SEEDING
SAFE SIDEBAND FERTILISER PLACEMENT
With the Seed Hawk system, placement of the fertiliser
band ¾” deeper and 1 ½” to the side of the seed provides
just the right separation for seedling safety, yet also
provides fast, early season access to the fertiliser band
at just the right time in the growing season when the
seedling requires rapid uptake of nutrients.
An independent trial conducted by the Westman
Agricultural Diversification Organization (WADO) at
Melita, Manitoba, confirms Seed Hawk’s safe sideband
fertiliser placement. The trial looked at Seed Hawk’s single
sideband and Twin Wing knives in 2007 and 2008 with
similar results (see Graph 1). The researchers found that
even at very high rates of nitrogen (N) at 120 pounds
per acre in canola, both systems showed no statistically
significant differences in emergence compared to the non-
fertilized check – even in very dry, sandy soil – indicating
that fertiliser toxicity is not a concern with Seed Hawk’s
sideband seeding system.
NOT ALL SIDEBAND KNIVES ARE CREATED EQUAL
• Seed Hawk single sideband system uses two
independent, narrow knife openers to place seed and
fertiliser in separate bands, which guarantees ideal
separation between seed and fertiliser.
• The trailing seed knife buries the fertiliser band before
placing the seed.
• Maintains optimum seed–fertiliser separation to
eliminate fertiliser toxicity.
• Eliminates fertiliser placement issues common when
conditions are too wet or too dry or with worn, all-in-one
sideband shank openers.
• Independent packer wheels pack each seed row to the
correct seed depth.
THE OPTIMUM SEED AND FERTILISER PLACEMENT
The Seed Hawk seeding system was designed with these
agronomic considerations in mind, and it is safe to say
that independent research supports what Seed Hawk
farmers know: that precision seed and sideband fertiliser
placement with the Seed Hawk system results in minimal
seedbed disturbance, fast uniform emergence, early
season access to fertiliser, and consistently high yields.

No fertiliser toxicity. No stranded inter-row fertiliser bands. No compromise. That’s the Seed Hawk
difference: farmers continue to see the benefits from the emerging leader of precise seed and
fertiliser placement.
EARLY SEASON ACCESS TO FERTILISER IS CRITICAL
Research at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research station at Melfort looked at nutrient
uptake in spring wheat and illustrated the importance of early season access to nutrients. During
the first three weeks after seeding, wheat took up 33% of its total accumulated N, and by six weeks
had accumulated 88% of N. Clearly, for full yield potential to be achieved, early season access to
nutrients must not be limited by placement of the nutrients too far away from the seed row.
In other research, The Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute pointed out the risk of stranded inter-
row band N, noting in Research Update 768, dated July 2007, Emergence and Yield Comparison of
Mid Row and Side Banding Seeding/Fertiliser Systems that:
“…if dry conditions prevail during the first few weeks following seeding, access to N by the emerging
crop may be more limited with the midrow band placement.”
FARMERS KNOW IT – RESEARCH PROVES IT
Farmers see the difference in the field, and independent research backs them up. Seed Hawk
precision seed and fertiliser placement gets the crop off to a safe, fast start and a high-yielding
finish. Based on independent research, Seed Hawk customers reported an average of 10.8% yield
increase comparing their old drill with their new Seed Hawk.
The Seed Hawk seeding system provides ideal seed and fertiliser placement, and overcomes the two
risks of fertiliser placement commonly found with other sideband and inter-row banding systems:
fertiliser that is too close to or too far away from the seed.
If rates are too high, fertiliser placed too close to the seed or in the seed row can have a toxic salt
effect. However, fertiliser placed in an inter-row band can be stranded away from the seed, resulting
in poor early season growth when the crop is trying to establish its full yield potential. At the same
time, fertiliser in the inter-row band is readily available to weeds. (See illustrations on left)
SIDEBANDING
Seed Hawk sidebanding places the fertiliser far enough away from the seed to ensure safety, yet close enough to get the pop-up effect and maximum yields.
INTER-ROW BANDING
Inter-row banding forces the roots to grow three times longer before they reach critical nutrients and forces growers to put excessive amounts of other nutrients with the seed.
SIDEBANDING VERSUS INTER-ROW BANDING
With a Seed Hawk system, placement of the fertiliser band ¾” deeper
and 1 ½” to the side of the seed provides just the right separation
for seedling safety yet also provides fast, early season access to the
fertiliser band when the seedling requires rapid uptake of nutrients.

FERTILISER BAND AND ROOT GROWTH
The secondary roots of the young canola plant can be seen growing down to the right, directly towards the fertiliser band.
Low-pressure water system was used to wash away soil from the seed row. The exposed roots showed an affinity for the area in and below the fertiliser band.

Dual knife placement ensures consistent, safe seed to fertiliser separation.
ACTIVE HYDRAULIC CYLINDER
The cylinder puts the opener into seeding and transport positions; it also controls the trip force and packing pressure from the tractor control box.
MAIN PIVOT POINT
The opener pivots at this point for active seeding position and for transport position.
NITRIDE STEEL ROD
The cylinder rod is tempered steel that will not pit, bend or rust, ensuring a long life that will not damage cylinder seals.
FERTILISER TRIP PIVOT POINT
When rocks and stones are encountered, the fertiliser knife trips back and pivots around this point. This can be set to require up to 350 pounds of force before the knife will trip, ensuring excellent penetration in all conditions.
DROP TUBE
The drop tube is molded for the addition of liquid or NH3 delivery kits.
FERTILISER KNIFE
The redesigned fertiliser knife now has double the carbide surface area (4"), extending the life of the knife and giving a straighter penetration angle to reduce soil throw.
SEED KNIFE
Seed Hawk’s 1/2" wide seed knife is the narrowest in the industry, carbide tipped for extended life, and back swept to maintain a stable seed shelf.
FERTILISER DEPTH ADJUSTMENT
The fertiliser knife attaches to a slot on the trip arm to allow
for fertiliser depth adjustment in relation to the seed depth.
DESIGNED TO HELP YOU GROW.
SEED KNIFE
Seed Hawk’s 1/2" wide seed knife is the narrowest in the industry, carbide tipped for extended life, and back swept to maintain a stable seed shelf.
DEPTH ADJUSTMENT POINT
The depth adjustment pivots between the seed and fertiliser knife, so the distance between the seed and fertiliser depth is constant at all seed depth settings.
CHAIN
The chain provides a visual guide for packing pressure. When the chain is tight, packing pressure is adequate. If the chain is loose, more packing pressure is required.
QUICK PIN DEPTH SETTING
Pulling the quick pin and turning the gears with a 3/4" wrench makes for simple, quick adjustments in 1/8" increments.
PACKER GAUGE WHEEL
Semi-pneumatic packer tyre virtually eliminates flats even in extreme stubble conditions. It can pack up to 260 pounds of force. The hub contains a greasable, tapered bearing.
Carbide-tipped knife assemblies are designed for precise placement, durability and easy replacement of individual components.
PRECISION OPENERS.Seed Hawk openers operate independently for superior shallow seeding, depth accuracy and optimum fertiliser placement. The result is quick, uniform germination, even packing and consistent performance, regardless of soil or weather conditions. Each opener assembly operates independently by pivoting at the frame, controlled by its own adjustable hydraulic cylinder.
• A range of knives for every seeding style.
• Separate placement of seed and fertiliser.
• Excellent seed safety and crop emergence.
• Optimal residue clearance and flow.
Fast, easy depth adjustment is standard. To set the seed knives’ depth (fertiliser knife depth is automatically adjusted by same amount), simply use a ¾" wrench, adjust to the desired setting on the scale and re-insert the pin.
Hardox steel mud scrapers are optional to aid seeding in wet or high clay conditions.
To give exceptional strength and stability, the opener
assembly is constructed of two high tensile 5/8" thick by 3 ½"
deep steel side beams.
Wear plates are placed between all opener pivot points to reduce wear, promoting longer life for the opener and making depth adjustments easier.
SEED KNIVES
ACCURACY.ACCURACY.ACCURACY.Seed Hawk seeding accuracy would make any accountant proud. With two seed knives to choose from, Seed Hawk has a seed knife to fit every grower’s need.
Seed Hawk seed knives place fertiliser in the optimum position for the seed, delivering excellent emergence and increased yields.
SINGLE SIDEBAND SEED KNIFE
The original Seed Hawk single sideband seed knife delivers precise, accurate seed
and fertiliser placement. The single sideband opener system is unparalleled for
seedling safety and emergence. The dual knife system cuts a separate trench for the
seed as well as the fertiliser, protecting the seedling and ensuring the seed is placed
on undisturbed soil. This results in quicker germination and ultimately delivers more
even emergence. The original Seed Hawk single sideband setup accurately places
fertiliser ¾” deeper and 1 ½” to the side of the single seed row.
TWIN WING SEED KNIFE
The Twin Wing seed knife allows higher seedbed utilization on wider row spacings,
improved residue clearance, more primary heads in cereals and increased crop
competition for weeds. The design of the Twin Wing ensures that two distinct rows
emerge, unlike most split boot knives on the market, which produce a ribbon of
seed. Because of this, a grower can equip a 12” spaced machine and produce a field
with 9” spacing between emerged rows. This reduces the horsepower requirements
of bigger drills, while still delivering tighter row spacings. The Twin Wing seed knife
follows directly behind the fertiliser knife; it cuts a shelf placing seed on undisturbed
ground in two rows ¾” above and 1 ½” on each side of the fertiliser band. The separate
seed and fertiliser knives ensure product separation, while keeping the seed on
undisturbed seed beds. The seed knife following directly behind the fertiliser knife
greatly improves residue flow around the openers and through the toolbar.
Paired row seeding allows for wider row spacing, which reduces capital costs andresults in lower draft requirements.
Independent research shows the Twin Wing precisely places seed and fertiliser separately to ensure fast, uniform germination.

ELIMINATE OVERLAPS.SAVE ON INPUT COSTS.ACHIEVE BETTER YIELDS.
Seed Hawk’s Sectional Control® Technology (SCT®) is an innovative
way to eliminate overlaps and save on input costs. Sectional
Control Technology works in conjunction with GPS to lift openers
when seeded ground is encountered, and shut down metering of
seed and fertiliser which reduces ground disturbance and doubling
up of inputs.
Reduce costs by 10 to 15% or more depending on the
width of your toolbar, the variability of your land and moisture
conditions.
• Save on both seed and fertiliser.
• Eliminate overlaps on headlands.
• Reduce overlaps when seeding around sloughs,
potholes and bush.
• Finish the final path with less overlap.
Input savings seem to be what’s driving SCT demand, but there are
agronomic benefits to Seed Hawk’s SCT as well.
Typically on overlaps, a doubling up of seed and fertiliser occurs.
Those areas are often further ahead in maturity, either because
of the inter-plant competition from increased plant stands, or
because of the two passes of the openers. With the two passes of
the openers, most of the stubble is knocked down, exposing more
black soil that heats up faster and speeds up crop emergence and
development.
Uneven maturity becomes an issue at swathing when those
overlapped areas are well advanced compared to the rest of the
crop. This can cause canola to shell, leading to more volunteers the
next growing season and increased need for additional herbicide
applications.
One of the biggest agronomic advantages to Seed Hawk’s SCT
system is that the openers are lifted and product flow is stopped
when a previously seeded area (or overlap) is encountered. On
other manufacturers’ systems, where seed and fertiliser are shut
off but the openers remain in the ground on overlaps, the seedbed
is disturbed twice with the second pass moving seed and fertiliser
around. This can also result in uneven emergence and poor crop
uniformity.
Lifting openers also helps when working around potholes, which
often requires sharp turns in the overlapping areas. On wide
drills, the inside section can start to back up during the turn, and
seed openers can become plugged. Because Seed Hawk’s SCT lifts
the inside sections on overlaps, this problem is eliminated.
SECTIONAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
SAVE ON INPUT COSTS
IMPROVES CROP PRODUCTION
MORE THAN INPUT SAVINGS
PRECISION EVOLVESNO MORE MISSESThe wireless blockage monitor checks flow and delivers quick, accurate notification of blockages.
• Acoustic sensors detect trouble.
• Information is relayed to iCon control.
• Blockage control monitor alerts with visual and audio prompts.
• Wi-Fi control eliminates failures common in wired sensor/monitor systems.
THE FUTURE OF SECTIONAL CONTROLSectional Control Technology is standard on all systems* and works with GPS to increase the precision of your seeding operation. SCT lifts openers, stops seed and fertiliser metering and reduces doubling up of inputs on seeded ground.
*except Loup III 500LTank
SCT has also proven to be a benefit on square headlands. The system works automatically, and tractor operators do not have to worry about throwing multiple switches to start and stop product flow and raise and lower openers.
MORE UNIFORM FIELDS
With Sectional Control Technology, plant stands are more uniform because overlaps and misses are virtually eliminated.
• Achieve a more uniform harvest by eliminating green or lodged areas due to over-fertilized headlands.
• Eliminate over-fertilized areas that lodge and plug the seeder the following year.
• Increase yield by eliminating the double seeding of overlaps.
FLEXIBLE AND VERSATILE
Sectional Control Technology brings hands-free operation to controlling seed and fertiliser application. The system automatically starts and stops at the headlands when turning, with no flipping of switches or moving levers. Best of all, it can be used with all types of fertiliser – liquid, granular or anhydrous ammonia – and comes with a limited 1-year warranty.
Now, wide toolbars are as versatile and flexible as small drills. An 84-foot toolbar can be shut down in sections of 10 ½ feet.
SCT benefits are demonstrated when finishing fields. Openers on the right side of the toolbar are up as they pass over previously seeded ground.
ESTIMATING OVERLAPSWHAT PERCENTAGE CAN YOU EXPECT ON YOUR FARM?The examples are meant to illustrate the potential overlaps the grower that farms this land can expect.
SCT SAVINGS CALCULATORSEE THE SAVINGS ON YOUR LANDSeed Hawk has worked in conjunction with the University of Saskatchewan’s Computer Science Department to develop the SCT Savings Calculator. This computer driven system allows farmers to choose a quarter or full section of their own land and customise input costs. The simulator then “seeds” the land, calculates input costs and computes the savings on that quarter or section. To see the SCT Savings Calculator in action visit your local dealer, check out the SCT Savings Calculator online or visit the Seed Hawk booth at major tradeshows.
“The past spring, we had a lot of sloughs and estimate we had 10 to 12 percent savings with the SCT. I would recommend it. The savings are there from SCT.”
Michael Gross, Riverbend Farms
Waldheim, Saskatchewan
“ In the future, you won’t see a drill over 50 feet wide without Sectional Control. The common, regular drill is going to be a thing of the past. You start seeding canola at $40 or $50 an acre, plus fertiliser, and we’re talking a pretty fast payback.”
Dennis Johnsrud, Epping, North Dakota
EXAMPLE ONEA typical field in the pothole country in the dark brown soil zone. Working around sloughs and bluffs with a 66’ wide drill resulted in a 15.1% overlap and a potential savings, when using SCT, of $2,803.98 on this 138.95 acre field*.
EXAMPLE TWOA field with coulees or water runs can really cause the overlaps to add up. Working this 130.49 acre field with an 84’ wide drill resulted in an 18.1% overlap and a potential savings, when using SCT, of $3,321.05*.
* Savings calculation based on seeding canola at 5 lbs/acre with a $10 seed cost, plus fertiliser at 120 lbs/acre actual nitrogen, 33 lbs/acre actual phosphate and 13 lbs/acre actual sulphur. Fertiliser prices used in the example are: urea $550/tonne, phosphate $650/tonne, sulphur $395/tonne. Calculations do not include potential yield losses due to lodging and uneven maturity in field due to overlapping. All calculations were made using average seeding conditions in the fields (not overly wet or dry).

Seed Hawk’s Seed Between the Rows (SBR)* technology means each opener seeds between last year’s stubble rows. Research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Swift Current shows that in drier regions tall stubble (12”) creates a better microclimate, resulting in better moisture use and higher yields than short stubble (6”).
Seed Hawk’s SBR technology allows openers to run between stubble rows, improving seed and fertiliser
placement. In some conditions, residue management prior to seeding is needed because Seed Hawk’s
SBR paddle senses stubble and not last year’s furrow, but SBR still works even after heavy harrowing.
With SBR, stubble can be cut taller at harvest, improving harvest efficiencies. Because the stubble is
left standing, it acts as a barrier to help prevent an opener from throwing soil onto the neighbouring
row. This also allows for slightly faster, safe seeding speeds, and creates an excellent microclimate.
The depressed blackened furrow between the stubble rows collects runoff and increases the soil
temperature, while the stubble slows the wind. This improves germination and yield by creating a
moist, warm greenhouse- like effect. With SBR, the stubble remains standing and undisturbed, leaving a
cleaner, firmer and better seedbed.
SEED BETWEEN THE ROWS
PROTECTION FOR YOUR FRAGILE SEEDLINGS
Hydraulic cylinders move the hitch to keep the openers between the rows.
Standing stubble creates a better microclimate for emerging seedlings.
A curved paddle sensor rides above the ground to detect stubble rows.

FARMER INNOVATION AT THE HEART OF EVERY ONE
Seed Hawk knows what it takes to succeed in farming: innovation, precision, quality products and most importantly, a deep-rooted knowledge of agriculture. Over twenty years ago, the Seed Hawk idea germinated in the minds of two farmers who had the desire to reduce tillage to satisfy a strong conservation ethic and to realize savings in moisture, time, fuel and tractor hours. As farmers, the Seed Hawk owners knew the frustration that comes from poorly designed and poorly built equipment.
The result – from the very first Seed Hawk machine – is a
reputation for producing high-quality machinery with low maintenance costs and the most precise seeding system on the market.
Seed Hawk continues to improve their seeding system and bring innovations to the direct seeding marketplace. Today, with thousands of machines in the field and an expanding dealer network around the world, Seed Hawk is building a better drill, one customer at a time.
As Seed Hawk continues to grow, their focus on innovation
will never stop. Housed in a new 100,000 square foot production facility, and equipped with a dedicated research facility, Seed Hawk will continue to focus on production and technological improvements.
What will not change though, is Seed Hawk’s grounding in solid agronomics. In the future, as in the past, farmers will continue to benefit as Seed Hawk works hard to fulfill their goal to evolve farming further through the creation of ingenious seeding equipment.
