Direction, Alignment, CommitmentCCL’s Direction, Alignment, Commitment: Achieving Better Results Through Leadership workshop kit focuses on a framework that enables individuals to work together as a cohesive group to produce collective results – results they could never achieve working as individuals.

This workshop is based on CCL’s extensive analysis of field work in the area of leadership, leadership development, and organizational leadership, that lead to CCL’s proven Direction, Alignment, Commitment (DAC) framework for effective leadership.

A “Read This First” support document provides links to two Support Videos featuring CCL experts. The first provides an overview of the intent and process of using Workshop Kits, while the second provides insight on the particular topic. See sample on page 11

Each Facilitator Kit includes materials to support workshop facilitation in convenient delivery methods - live online and face-to-face. The Facilitator Guide is your roadmap to success. Inside you’ll find an overview of the course, learning objectives, timeframes, a supply list, and delivery requirements. It also provides step-by-step guidance on every slide and activity outlining how to prepare and what to say and do at each step.

The five Direction, Alignment, Commitment posters are visual aids for face-to-face classroom delivery.

See samples on pages 4–8

The live online and face-to-face Workshop Slide Decks help participants connect to the material, give key instructions when needed, and allow them to focus on the content.

About the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) For more than four decades, CCL has leveraged the power of leadership to transform individuals, teams, entire organizations and societies to achieve what matters most to them — with results that are powerful, measurable, and enduring.

Looking for better group results? Leadership is the Answer!

When you get down to what leadership is really about, it’s not so much what any one person does as what groups of individuals do together to produce collective results. Individuals who work together as a cohesive group produce results that could never be achieved by an individual.

This interactive workshop designed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) provides tools and skills to make it easier to engage in the behaviors that give rise to leadership. Learning  and applying the principles of CCL’s proven approach for  effective leadership – Direction, Alignment, and Commitment  (DAC) – will put any group you are a part of on a path to  achieving better results.

IntroductionDirection, Alignment, Commitment: Achieving Better Results Through Leadership introduces leaders to a simple, proven framework that defines what it means to achieve effective leadership. It is based on CCL’s extensive analysis of field work in the area of leadership, leadership development, and organizational leadership.

The beginnings of the DAC leadership framework emerged more than 15 years ago as CCL explored new directions in the understanding and development of leadership. Historically, CCL recognized leadership as essentially an interpersonal influence process. Leadership was about individuals (called leaders) encouraging other people (called followers) to engage in the pursuit of shared goals. This asymmetrical partnership is at the heart of most traditional leadership theories. However, in 2001, CCL began to broaden its focus from individuals to leadership systems within organizations. A core question was, “What does it take for people to willingly and effectively combine their efforts to produce collective results?” This guiding question launched a broad exploration that included reviewing scientific and practice literature; trying out ideas with clients, participants, and professional audiences; and engaging in intensive discussions with researchers. As a result of this exploration, we identified three key ingredients that enable individuals to work together to produce collective results: shared direction, alignment of work, and commitment to the collective. This outcome-focused perspective on the essential elements of leadership became a foundational part of CCL’s leadership development practice. Today, we use the DAC framework to help over 35,000 leaders from 3,000 companies annually to improve leadership impact in their organizations.

When delivering this workshop, it is important to keep in mind and emphasize how the DAC leadership framework is distinct from other frameworks participants may be familiar with; it focuses on leadership effectiveness and group outcomes rather than leader effectiveness and individual activities.

Purpose and Approach: Goals• To learn a proven framework for effective leadership—the process of producing direction, alignment,

and commitment among people with shared work.

• To improve leadership processes within your organization by identifying deficiencies in direction, alignment, or commitment and using strategies to mitigate the issues.

Expected Objectives and Outcomes of This Workshop

Objectives: At the completion of this training, the participants will be able to:

• Better understand leadership as a social process.

• Apply an effective approach to enhance leadership outcomes—Direction, Alignment, Commitment.

• Assess how well leadership is happening in their group.

• Identify actions they can take to improve leadership outcomes.

Outcome:

• Create an action plan for improving leadership effectiveness in a specific group.SAM

About This Facilitator’s GuideThis guide gives you the information, techniques, materials, and processes you need to deliver this training Life Online session, explicitly designed for facilitators.

Preparing for This WorkshopAt the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®), we want you to be a successful facilitator of our Direction, Alignment, and Commitment (DAC) workshop. This guide provides you with the content, guidance, and tools to do that. However, much of your success will come from your customization of the material so that it aligns with the organizational goals, participants’ needs, and your approach to facilitation. Success also comes from careful preparation. Below are the steps you need to take before the workshop begins.

Invite the participants. Send an invitation to selected participants. Include a description of the purpose of the workshop, and the dates, time, and link to virutual meeting space. Look on the thumb drive, and you will find an example of an invitation you can send to participants.

Because you will be introducing DAC tools at various points throughout this workshop, you will need to familiarize yourself with them.

Introduce the workshop to participants. It is recommended that two weeks before the workshop (feel free to adjust the time frame for your situation), send the participants full communication about when and how the workshop will take place. You send this initial communication by email or set up a live online meeting with participants. This detailed communication should accomplish the following:

• Reconfirm details, such as the dates, time, and location.• Set participant expectations around the goals and outcomes.• Explain how the workshop correlates with the organizational strategy for employee development.• (Optional) Provide additional logistical information participants may need.

Adapt the script: While it is important that you cover the topics set forth in this guide, it is also important that you use your creativity; for example, choosing an alternative activity to one provided in the guide that can achieve the same results. We encourage you to incorporate your ideas and techniques into the delivery of this workshop program and to adapt the discussion questions to fit the needs of the organization and the participants.

Prepare yourself: Your workshop will be more successful if you are very familiar with the script and the supporting materials, so take the time to study them carefully. Watch the video provided to learn more about your workshop kit and how to navigate potential challenges. You might wish to pull together a small group and practice at least part of your delivery, so you will be comfortable and confident when the workshop begins.SA

Share Your Experience

Think about a time when you were part of a group or team and one of these statements was especially true:

• We found our purpose.

• We were excited about where we were headed.

• We all knew our roles and responsibilities.

• All our work fit together seamlessly.

• Everyone felt responsible for the work.

• We were committed to one another.

What was the group? What were you working on?

What did it feel like to be part of the group?

What enabled the group to work together well and reach its goals?SAM

Is your group getting results? Is it hitting targets, achieving

quality standards, meeting deadlines, making timely

decisions, or exceeding stakeholders’ expectations? If you

answered “no” to any of these questions, whether you are

the leader or a member of the group, you should explore the

roots of the problems your group might be experiencing.

Do you have the most capable and diverse talent or

resources in the group to get the job done? Is the group

basing its work on faulty assumptions (e.g., what clients or

customers value most, the promise of a new technology, the

willingness of different agencies or divisions to cooperate)?

Has something in your organization’s environment changed,

such as additional competition or new forms of regulation,

making the group’s original aims unrealistic or irrelevant?

Or do you have a leadership problem?

The most common definition of a “leadership problem”
