Mount Mary Church: The chapel of Mount Mary was built around 1640. Lore has it that the chapel
was destroyed in 1738 during a raid by the Marathas. The statue of the Virgin Mary was
recovered from the sea by fishermen and temporarily installed in St. Andrew's Church, before
being shifted to the rebuilt Mount Mary Church in 1761. To this day, the statue is venerated and
many miracles, minor and major, are attributed to the Lady of the Mount. People of all faiths and
communities visit the Church giving the place a syncretic nature. The Bandra Fair is held during
the eight days of the Octave (starting on the Sunday following September 8) when pilgrims throng
the Church, coming from as far as the outskirts of Maharashtra.
Castella de Aguada: Meaning "Fort of the Waterpoint" in Portuguese, this fort is also known as the
Bandra Fort. It is located at Land's End in Bandra. It was built by the Portuguese in 1640 as a
watchtower overlooking Mahim Bay, the Arabian Sea and the southern island of Mahim. The
strategic value of the fort was enhanced in 1661 after the Portuguese ceded the seven islands of
Bombay that lay to the immediate south of Bandra to the British. The name indicates its origin as
a place where fresh water was available in the form of a fountain ("Aguada") for Portuguese ships
cruising the coasts in the initial period of Portuguese presence.
Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple (ISKCON): The Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, International
Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Temple or Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple is among
the most visited sacred Temples. Situated in Juhu, this Temple is also known as Radha Rasabihariji
Temple, where thousands of devotees flock the Temple from across the globe.
For Street Shopping – Linking Road and Bandra West / Juhu Vile Parle
For Shopping Malls – Phoenix Market City, Kurla / Inorbit Mall, Malad / Oberoi Mall, Goregaon
For Leisure – Bandra Land’s End / Juhu Beach
Restaurants – Plenty of options at Bandra West / Juhu
South Mumbai Destination and Information Guide:
Siddhivinayak Temple: The old Temple was consecrated on Thursday, 19th November 1801. The
idol of Shree Siddhivinayak was carved out of a single black stone. On both sides of the Lord
Ganesh idol, are placed one idol each of Riddhi and Siddhi Goddesses who are appearing like
peeping out from behind the Ganesh idol. This is one of the oldest Temples in Mumbai where
devotees visit to get their wishes and dreams fulfilled.
Dhobi Ghat (Public Laundry): It's a fascinating spectacle looking down on rows upon rows of
open-air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone, while Mumbai's Dhobis
(around 200 Dhobi families work together here) relentlessly pound the dirt from the city's
garments in a timeless tradition. Known as the world's largest outdoor laundry, Dhobi Ghat is
where Mumbai's traditional washer folk (or dhobis) provide a wonderful service, collecting dirty
laundry, washing it and returning it neatly pressed, all for a very small fee. At the very least, it's
a great photo opportunity; though most locals think it rather amusing that their everyday work
arouses such curiosity.
Bombay was originally a cluster of 7 islands inhabited by kolis / fisherfolk. These islands were a
part of Gujarat. A Muslim ruler captured these islands and later handed them over to the
Portuguese in 1534, who in turn presented them to the British in 1661. In 1687, The East India
Company shifted to Bombay. This is when big business houses started entering Bombay. In 1960
Bombay State was dissolved and the State of Maharashtra came into being, with Bombay as its
capital. In 1995, Bombay became Mumbai. This name was derived from Mumbadevi, the patron
goddess of the kolis. Today Mumbai is recognized as the financial capital of India.
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, officially known as ‘Rajiv Gandhi Setu’ was inaugurated on 30th June
2009. The sea link, seen as an engineering marvel, weighs equivalent to that of 50,000 African
elephants! The steel wire used is equivalent to the circumference of the earth. The 5.6 km-long
cable stayed bridge is 63 times the height of the Qutub Minar. It has consumed 90,000 tonnes of
cement, which would suffice to make five ten-storied buildings. This magnificent sea link connects
both north and south Mumbai seamlessly over the beautiful Arabian Sea.
North Mumbai Destination and Information Guide:
Bandra "Queen Of The Suburbs": Bandra is a suburb located in the north-west of Mumbai. It has
earned the sobriquet "Queen of the Suburbs".
Bandra is one of the lesser explored but more interesting parts of Mumbai, tempting visitors with
its unique mix of history, architecture, traditional ‘gaothans’, Bollywood glamour and some of the
best shopping in the city.
Bandra is home to numerous churches, including Mount Mary's Basilica. The Parsi Fire Temple,
Tata Agiary is located on Hill Road. Other famous religious places include the Jama Masjid
(mosque) located near Bandra West railway station and the temple of Goddess Jari-Mari, located
on S.V. Road. A municipal lake, Swami Vivekanand Talao, is also located in Bandra.
Juhu Beach: This is one of the most famous beaches in Mumbai. It is situated on the shores of the
Arabian Sea in Juhu suburb. Many tourists make it a point to visit the beach when they come to
Mumbai, as it is a relatively uncrowded space in the city, although it does get crowded in the
evenings and on weekends.
6Mumbai – Places of Interest
Full Day Tours:
Sanjay Gandhi National Park: The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, also known as Borivali National
Park, is a unique National Park in that; it lies within the borders of a city. The park lies on the
northern fringes of suburban Mumbai. It covers an area of 104 sq. km. and is one of Asia's most
visited National Parks with 2 million annual visitors. The park also holds claim to be the largest
park in the world located within city limits.
The park, notified in 1974, offers a pleasant change from the usual sights, attractions, rush and
glamour of the big city. The undulating green lands of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park are just the
kind of surroundings to which one would love to retreat for some moments of quiet introspection
or meditation. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is known for its dense forests, vast bird life,
butterflies and a small population of leopards. The park also encompasses the famous Kanheri
Caves (between 1st century BC and 9th century AD) and two lakes - Tulsi and Vihar, which provide
water to Mumbai city.
Kanheri Caves: These caves are over 2,000 years old and provide a rare opportunity to
understand monastic life in ancient India. Located on a prosperous trade route, Kanheri saw
continuous occupation from the 1st century BC, until the decline of Buddhism in India in the 9th
century AD. The carvings and architecture of Kanheri reflect the older, more austere Hinayana
Buddhism as well as the later, more popular Mahayana. The caves are largely undisturbed, tucked
away in the green environs of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
Haji Ali Dargah: This is the Tomb of a Muslim Saint, who died while on pilgrimage to Mecca. It is
believed that a casket containing his mortal remains floated and came to rest on a rocky bed in
the sea. Haji Ali left this world during his journey to Mecca and miraculously the casket carrying
his body, floated back to these shores, getting stuck in the string of rocky islets just off the shore
of Worli. Thus, the Dargah was constructed there. This Dargah in memory of St. Haji Ali is about
eight centuries old. Situated in the sea near Worli, it can be approached only during low tides. This
holy place is visited by people of all religions in Mumbai.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (C.S.T.): Modelled on the lines of the St. Pancras Station in London,
this Gothic structure has carved stone friezes and stained glass windows. The station was
christened to commemorate Victoria Jubilee Day in 1887 when India's first steam engine puffed
out to neighbouring Thane, about 45 kms away. The old steam engines have been replaced by
electric ones. But to the nearly 2.5 million commuters who push past its massive portals every
day, this is still V.T (Victoria Terminus), the pulse of a throbbing city. Drive-by and a great photo
opportunity for those who like Gothic architecture.
Gateway of India, Colaba: Mumbai's most famous monument was built in 1887, as a triumphal arch
to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. This structure is complete with four
turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone. When the British Raj ended
in 1947, the last of the British ships that set sail for England, left from the Gateway. We
recommend a short cruise through Mumbai's splendid natural harbour.
Prince of Wales Museum: Also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralay was yet
another structure to commemorate the visit of King George V to India in the year 1905. It can be
broadly described as a British interpretation of Mughal architecture, the Indo–Saracenic style. It
has a collection of artifacts from Elephanta Island, Jogeshwari caves and the Indus valley. Besides
other special subjects, the museum has Art, Natural History and Archaeology.
Marine Drive: Recently renamed as "Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Road", one of the most popular
promenades of Mumbai is the Marine Drive. Built on land reclaimed during 1920s and 1930s, it
spans along the shore of the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point past Chowpatty beach to Babulnath,
at the foot of Malabar Hill. Marine Drive is also known as the 'Queen's Necklace' because at night
time when the street lights are switched on, it looks like a glittering diamond necklace - a sight to
behold.
Girgaum Chowpatty: This is a beach that has the liveliness of a carnival in the evenings with local
snack stalls like Bhelpuri, Chaat, Kulfi (Indian ice cream) and Sundry entertainers. Eating Bhelpuri
(made from rice puffs), one of the local snacks at Chowpatty from any of the multitude of food
stalls installed here, are an essential part of the Mumbai experience.
Mount Mary Church: The chapel of Mount Mary was built around 1640. Lore has it that the chapel
was destroyed in 1738 during a raid by the Marathas. The statue of the Virgin Mary was
recovered from the sea by fishermen and temporarily installed in St. Andrew's Church, before
