1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

If you have seen the Table of Contents, you’llknow that this booklet is intended for people of allfaiths. As a disclaimer, I’m a traditional prayer-book1 Anglican, but I’ve tried to be objective.

This document was written to help those in-terested in finding a faith community that wouldbe appropriate for them. Also, there may be peo-ple who simply want to learn more about the reli-gious life of St. John’s and the surrounding area. Ihave tried to be inclusive, addressing not only allChristian denominations, but also other religions. For brevity, I have used the word church to mean(unless the context implies otherwise) a church orother place of worship.

1.2 How to Use This Booklet

If you are reading this as a pdf file, you will seethat the Table of Contents is linked electronicallyto the sections of the document. There are fiveprincipal denominations in this area: the Angli-can Church of Canada, the Pentecostal Assem-blies of Newfoundland and Labrador, the RomanCatholic Church, the Salvation Army, and theUnited Church of Canada. There is a section foreach, plus another section for all other Christianchurches, and finally a section for all other placesof worship. If you don’t see what you are lookingfor in the Table of Contents, then try the Index at

the back of the book. It is easy to say whetheror not a church belongs to one of the five princi-pal denominations. Faith communities which arenot part of these five denominations but which areclearly Christian have been placed in the “OtherChristian Churches” section. All other faith com-munities have been placed in the “Other Places ofWorship” section.

1.3 What’s In, and What’s Out

I have included every church in or near St. John’sof which I am aware. If I have omitted anything, please advise me by email (see below). This doc-ument is meant to be primarily a living resourcerather than an historical archive. However, thefinal section of the document does provide in-formation about the major changes that have oc-curred since the first edition of this document (6August 2010).

For each church I have given (if applicable)contact information such as location, mailing ad-dress, telephone and fax numbers, email address, and website address. In most cases, churches arein their own buildings, but in some cases they aresimply renting a room in a building somewhere. Ihave provided information for both situations, butonly provide photographs for buildings primarilyused for religious purposes. I have not given thenames of clergy, nor the times of services.

A church’s website address should be a goodplace to look for service times, plus other infor-mation not provided here, but many churches do

1The Anglican Church of Canada uses both the Book of Common Prayer (1962) and the Book of Alternative Services(1985). The former uses traditional language, and the latter uses contemporary language. Here is an example:

Te Deum (BCP, page 7)We praise thee O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.

You are God (BAS, page 94)You are God: we praise you; you are the Lord: we acclaim you;you are the eternal Father: all creation worships you.

4

not keep their websites up-to-date. In my opin-ion, churches that have well-maintained websiteswill reach the younger generation, and those thatdon’t will not.

To learn about activities which cross de-nominational lines, see the website of theSt. John’s and Area Council of Churches athttp://www.stjohnscouncilofchurches.org.

1.4 CreditsThe picture on the cover page is that of the al-tar and reredos of the Anglican Cathedral. It isused with kind permission of Janine Sheppard. All other images are by the editor.

Information has come from a variety ofsources such as websites, the Telegram, and insome cases contacting persons for information. As this isn’t an academic publication, I have notused footnotes to cite each source, but I wishin this section to acknowledge the contributionsmade by others.

With kind permission, the Cathedral’s websiteis used to provide a home for this document. Thelatest version is posted to:stjohnsanglicancathedral.org/directory.html aswell as http://www.stjohnscouncilofchurches.organd http://www.thetelegram.com.
