Editorial

Everyone seems to have really enjoyed the lights put up by the Festivities Committee this year and there is a letter about it in our notices and thanks section. Also this Christmas the National Trust lit the Castle with LED lighting as well as with braziers. This transformed the Castle and was visible from miles around. If you liked the illumination let the National Trust know as they are considering doing it again next year. They might even do it for more than just the Christmas period if there is enough demand! The grey, cold and crisp days of winter have kicked in. It is some time since we had a full winter; perhaps this year is going to be it. I feel we need the proper seasons.

CORFE CASTLE PARISH COUNCIL

JANUARY AT THE PARISH COUNCIL

Dorset County Council has repaired the Studland Bridge with some timber as a sacrificial section where vehicles with long tailgates tend to hit it when turning right out of the road. Councillors whilst understanding the need for financial responsibility were not impressed with the appearance of the repair and will be querying this with the County Council.

The School Crossing Patrol has not received any enquiries about the vacancy so it looks as if the patrol is no longer viable and will not resume.

Councillors were pleased to hear anti-social events have reduced over the turn of the year. However, this may simply be due to the weather and lack of daylight so this is something the Council will continue to monitor.

The Parish Council will be requesting a Precept of £26,000 for the next financial year from Purbeck District Council. This will be the same as the last two years and is currently sufficient for the normal functions undertaken by the Council. The Parish Council has no other major source of income and relies on this small part of the council tax for all its activities.

At this time of the year our Parish roads are increasingly prone to pot holes and other damage. Please report any problems to Dorset Direct (County Council) on telephone number 01305 251000. Residents with computers can make a report to Dorset Highways at dorsetforyou.com. Similarly, if a street light that is not working, you can report it to SSE Contracting on freephone 0800 068 4145 (try to note the column or lamp number).

The Council considers all planning applications and submits comments to the District Council. The Parish Council had no objection to proposals for the following: The replacement of roof tiles on the rear porch at 7 West Street, Kingston. A Wytch Farm cable refurbishment project, involving the installation and operation of underground cables between the gathering station and well sites, X ,A, D and F; a temporary construction compound near to wellsite X; temporary soil storage areas and temporary access arrangements on Land between Wytch Farm Gathering Station and Wellsite F, Dorset.

The next Parish Council Meeting is on the 9th February in the Town Hall.

NEWS FROM CHURCH KNOWLE PARISH COUNCIL

10

The January meeting was at Church Knowle Reading Room with Cllr Parker in the Chair. No-one, other than Parish Councillors, attended the meeting. It had been hoped that, perhaps, a representative from the Margaret Green trust and Raglan might have come having regard to the discussions which took place at the December meeting and reported in Corfe Valley News. Anyway, the meeting went on to the main business as there were no members of the public present to start with a Public Discussion.

The minutes of the December meeting were agreed as correct and the meeting quickly moved on to planning matters. An application had been received for an extension at 132 Furzebrook Road and Members had no objections to the development.

A couple of grave memorials had, apparently, been erected at the cemetery without initial approval by the Parish Council and these were discussed. Members decided that a permission should be granted retrospectively as the stones complied with the cemetery design rules. All we need now are the fees.

The progress of past planning applications were noted and there was a bit of concern as to why the APN development application (which had been approved

expressed concern about this proposal and had approached one of the Parish Councillors indicating that there may be additional buildings which are currently not apparent. Councillors considered approaching the District Councillor for her opinion on the matter.

one of the Members will take the lead in assessing the proposals so that they can be put forward for longer discussion at the February meeting to give Councillors an opportunity to look at the paperwork which is pretty lengthy.

Next up came Highways matters with reports of overgrowths opposite Long Ground Cottages in Church Knowle requiring a bit of maintenance. Other areas requiring clearance, notably the bridleway between Green Pond and Norden, had been passed to County for action. During the discussion, which followed a report from the Clerk, one of the Members updated on the situation and reported that the clearance had already taken place. The Rains in Spain fall mainly on the Plain! Yes, they might do in Spain, but in Church Knowle Parish they fall to a great extent on the roads and the gullies and drains, especially in Furzebrook,

ion to the roads with resultant sand, gravel and tidal waves sweeping across the roads forming pools of water and sludge; some people might think larger than the Aral Sea and resulting in serious road hazards. Members decided that Dorset County Council must remedy the road drainage and gullies problems before there is a serious accident.

The problems regarding the road along the top of the ridge from the nature reserve to Grange Ach, and subject to a traffic restriction order (TRO, is still causing problems. The access gates are locked when they should be open and open when they should be locked. Members decided that DCC should be

closes the gates and responsibilities for opening/closing should be made laid to rest once and for all by DCC (the highways authority) giving the Parish Council all the information relating to the TRO. It was suggested a new set of keys and padlocks be obtained and issued only to keyholders relevant to the usage of the road. Further debate would continue in February after all the info has been received

The Corfe Castle BOAT also came up and it was reported that the trail-riding motor bikers were well behaved (closing gates etc) and also being far more polite and less obstructive to other users than the elastane-cyclists who use our parish roads. Just a point of interest here considering the general negative views that are banded about regarding motor cyclist in some quarters.

High speed skateboarders have again been whizzing down Cucknowle Hill at weekends; these people coming from all over Wessex to partake in a

for that, apparently is what it is, skateboarders having pedestrian rights and road priorities. One of your Councillors had to do some serious defensive driving to avoid a serious accident the other weekend while driving up Cucknowle while a skateboarder was zigzagging down it at about 40mph straight towards him. One day there will probably be a squashed

- 101 and get the Traffic police out to tell these guys their fortune.

The Affordable Homes in Church Knowle saga returned to debate, with the article in CVN being discussed. The Member with special responsibility for affordable housing had spoken with Raglan again and they had confirmed accuracy of what was written. There remains considerable concern about the general lack of progress over the years and the Chairman would contact Margaret Green trust in the near future to get things moving again and Councillors were disappointed that no-one from the animal sanctuary had attended the January meeting.

The accounts were presented and were shown to be in good order. The precept me

playground, playing field maintenance continue to a high standard and that the sole street lamp continues to shine. Councillors also agreed to the small

ee which had been held at the same rate for the past 6 years.

With regard to the budget for 2015/16, several suggestions were made. The goal posts in the playing field needed urgent replacement and this had to be paid for. Consideration is to be given to having winter grit bins at strategic points in the

were also discussed and will be further discussed in February. The issue of Councillor ID cards was mentioned and clearance given to go ahead so there

or does it? well, it all depends on doe

As a final piece of discussion, Members were very concerned about the lack of consultation by DCC on the possible closure of some recycling centres. Consultation replies seen to be in by 17 February and CKPC had not received any info in the matter. It has also been suggested by DCC that users must be able to prove their identity when using the centres (eg driving licence, passport, utility bills, etc.) It looks as though the consultation document has not been circulated to the wider community, inc. parish councils. Members thought an approach to the Purbeck Gazette might be in order as well as making the matter public through CVN. Perhaps a deluge of requests for consultation to DCC (on recycled paper, of course) might be useful.

Well, that was that for this month. Next meeting will be at Furzebrook Village Hall at 7.30pm. AW - 07731841093

Apprentices took seven years to complete their time as it was a very skilled job, although little is known about the process today. Cow horn is boiled to release the core then heated again to be cut, shaved as thinly as possible and cut

The leaves were boiled to soften them, flattened using heavy weights and then slotted into a wooden frame. It is a long, slow progress with many pitfalls and a pretty awful smell!

The Stars were Shining at the Outstanding Sparkling Celebration Aquarius Revels Sensation! The ladies looked ravishing and the men very svelte as we partied in Hollywood style surrounded by movie stars (thanks to Ruth and the Rex) and twinkling lights. Corfe Castle Surgery

We have a new starter to introduce to you. Tessa will be working alongside Anne and Kerry in the Dispensary and we hope you join us in welcoming her to the Corfe Castle Surgery team.

The FRIENDS AND FAMILY TEST is a way of gathering anonymous feedback from you about your recent experience of the practice. This will help us recognise where we are doing things well and where we need to improve. Your feedback gives a very real and recent picture of what you think. You will have the opportunity to feedback every time you are in the practice, after an appointment or attending for administrative things such as repeat prescription or blood test results.

As a patient registered with this practice you can give feedback after each and every contact if you want to. As a carer or relative you can also give feedback. You can choose to comment every time, sometimes or not at all.

Forms are available at the surgery, via your Friends of Corfe Castle Surgery Driver, on our NHS Choices website or your answers can be

ask at Reception for a log in and password; you will also be able to book GP appointments and request repeat medication online). If you need help completing this form, please just ask.

In December we had 5 FRIENDS AND FAMILY TEST completed and all 5 patients said they were EXTREMELY LIKELY to recommend our surgery.

Thank you to those who have already donated old tights in aid of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. You can still drop in tights at the

ive your old tights a new lease of life - Any tights are fine, as long as they are clean top of the leg, or around the waist.

In Africa, most mothers give birth without any medical help, enduring days of painful, prolonged labour. Old tights are the perfect solution to holding dressings in place for women suffering from childbirth injuries, in particular from fistulas. So before throwing a pair of tights away with a little ladder in, please think of these women and bring them to the surgery (once washed) so we can pass them on to this worthwhile cause.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION

ON PROPOSAL TO CONVERT TO ACADEMY STATUS

You re invited to attend Corfe Castle CE VC Primary School’s

Public Consultation Meeting on Wednesday 25th February 2015

at 2pm or 4pm in the School Hall y is to enable the school to continue to provide

nique qualities and strengths. We recognise that the role of Local Authorities in supporting schools is diminishing and that it is Government policy to encourage effective schools to become academies.

The Governing Body believes the best solution is for our school to form a local primary school partnership of Corfe Castle CE VC Primary School, Wareham St Mary CE VC Primary School, St George s CE VA Primary School and St Marks CE VA Primary School. The partnership would be a multi-academy trust and each school would convert to become an academy.

We are now consulting with the scommunity to hear your views and establish if there is any significant objection for the Governing Body to take into account when making its final decision. The consultation period will end on Monday 9th March 2015.

The Chair of Governors and Headteacher will be available at the meetings on Wednesday 25th February to answer any questions you might have. We have prepared a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document which will be made available at the meetings.

If you have any feedback on the proposal that you would like to share with the Governing Body and are unable to attend either of the meetings on Wednesday 25th February, then please contact the School Office and ask for a Consultation FAQ Sheet and Questionnaire.

Contact us on 01929 480428, or email us at [email protected]

We look forward to welcoming you on Wednesday 25th February at 2pm or 4pm.

From THE VILLAGE PUMP!

Corfe Castle

Did you know? Have you heard? THE EEL THING! Don and Viv Goodwin, Corfe Castle residents from 1975, hardly need any introduction. They are regularly seen 'bobbing' around at the Village Hall monthly Saturday

with a good yarn to tell and Viv with knitting needles in action. Don has

into the glossy magazines, wherein the Editor- also feature writer- of PURBECK Journal , Geoffrey Stubbs, makes a warm introductory reference to Don. In the Autumn/Winter 2014 Edition seven of this popular publication, I quote extracts (with permission of the Editor, thank you Geoff): “Don Goodwin's accent is pure Purbeck, all rolling R's and lifting vowels. A cigarette end hangs from the corner of his mouth most of the time and his pate goes seldom uncapped. Don -

– is unique, primarily that he is the only remaining fisherman in the UK with an Eel Bobbing Licence.” You can read more about this fishing sport in the glossy magazine, with the page heading of Ichthyology Fish Science. “It takes a practiced hand to get them surfaced and landed. This is a highly controlled method of fishing, compared with netting, though Don has done plenty of that.” The plight of the European Eel has been much discussed recently, in the media, due

to falling numbers. Don explained he is not allowed to sell them now

Don and Viv Goodwin – Always with a good Yarn

some find their way to the smokery! Don was, for 40 years, a Dorset fisherman. He has contributed to Village life in Corfe Castle, in earlier days employed cleaning the Village Square and following that, often aided by Viv, he was caretaker of the Village Hall. He was also involved with the Thursday nights Bingo. Don and Viv have two sons and a daughter, five grandchildren and one great-grandson, 6 month old Adam who lives in Portland. Recently, Viv was proudly showing friends at the Coffee Morning, her Christmas present With love from Adam a craft-made linen bag, embroidered with.. 'Great Grandma's Knitting'. There is no doubt that this will get much use! Viv is always knitting and has photographic proof that she started at the age of 4! Unfortunately, the charming sepia photograph is too small to reproduce well in this magazine. She makes all Don's jumpers, which are his Trademark, and his caps but Don was quick to declare that he makes the peaks! At

village hall it appears that he carries a designer-collection with him! Viv is from Yorkshire where her father was a school headteacher in Doncaster and Sheffield. From leaving school, she worked in Libraries, which she enjoyed very much. Coloured photographs of Don in action, eel bobbing by the river bank with a detailed explanation of the sporting skill, can

be seen in the PURBECK Journal, to which I refer, a magazine that offers all insights to this rural corner of Dorset. IGNITED! I take this opportunity, to applaud the National Trust for their inspired idea of lighting the Castle during the Festive Season. With braziers, beacons and lanterns burning, we were very impressed with the atmospheric glow that was created. Not strictly speaking for the first time of being lit in the 1000 year history, but most certainly the first time professionally by LED lights, making it visible for many miles around. This was created sympathetically to the local environment and amazingly revealed architecture hitherto unseen. Thank you to those involved at Corfe Castle NT for igniting a spark of brilliance. A point of interest: The day I am writing this, January 12th 2015, it is the 120th anniversary of the founding of the National Trust in 1895, by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley. As Readers will know, in 1982, the Castle, as part of the entire Bankes Estate, was accepted by the National Trust in Mr Ralph Bankes' legacy. In the interest of Tourism, it is often referred to as a romantic ruin but there is the other side of the story of 'orrible histories! I now quote extracts from the January 1983 Corfe Castle Community MagazineViews and subsequently CVN), from

Page 17: DIRECTORY OF LOCAL ORGANISATIONS CORFE VALLEYcorfevalleynews.co.uk/assets/cvn/CVN_February_2015.pdf · corfe castle parish clerk jeff dunn 555266 corfe castle town trust louise haywood

an item by the late Paul Randall, local historian and former Corfe Castle resident: 'The Lean Years: Our little town of Corfe has always been overshadowed by its Castle. County Historians and Guide Books have stressed the importance of its Royal ownership and its spirited defence by the brave Dame Mary but what of our forebears, the humble citizens who, for generations, earned their daily bread by back-breaking toil? For generations, they tilled the fields, worshipped in the Parish Church and doubtless wondered why they saw so little of the Lord of the Manor. In Norman times, Royal patronage caused the Corfe Marblers to become internationally known craftsmen. It was devotion to the Royal cause which caused the destruction of the Castle, the extinction of the principal landowners and the poverty to the humbler folk. The roads were neglected and so the stone trade moved towards Swanage, leaving no trade, apart from the milling of corn, for the inhabitants. A list of all the townsfolk was compiled in 1795 recording everyone's names, families, employment and earnings and it represents a sad story. Most were clayminers. William Pitt, of Encombe, had tried in vain to improve their lot, by starting a knitting and spinning industry. However, in around 1760, the clay industry, originally prospected by the Romans at Norden, brought some employment. Thomas Hyde of

Arne, negotiated with John Calcraft and Josiah Wedgewood, to dig and supply 1400 tons of clay each year. Without this growing industry, there is little doubt that the town would have become depopulated.' At the bottom of the page I quote from, it

now search the archive magazines to find the next part of this cliff-hanger! Now, however, we can move on to a village tradition that has, so far, happily survived the centuries on a cheery note. HIGH NOON

Pancake Tuesday (this year on the 17th February) as the Church clock strikes 12noon Members of the Ancient Guild of Purbeck Marblers and Stonecutters will be summoned to their Annual Meeting, gathering at The Fox Inn and Corfe Castle Town Hall. At this age old ceremony, the Order celebrates the Anniversary of the Signing of the Articles in 1651. The stone was shipped from Ower Quay and, now annually, symbolically, a peppercorn rent is presented to the owner. A football is kicked along the way to Ower . For centuries, in many villages, there is recorded the tradition of Shrovetide Football. The Highways Act of 1835, banned the playing of football on public highways and these legendary events went into sharp decline. Corfe Castle's Shrove Tuesday event is sometimes covered by the media so if you happen to be around the Square at the time, you will

33

perhaps enjoy the spectacle of this age old tradition. There is, of course, more detail to this tradition than I have touched on here. I am just about an idea in case some new readers wonder what goes on in the 'Wild West Street at High Noon' on Tuesday !

The Reverend Anne Bond writes:

At the beginning of the New Year, Corfe Castle said a sad farewell to a young lad who met death far too early, but whose short life made a marked

His attitude was always just not quite what you would expect: often very humorous, always to the point, and never unkind. Indeed, his most marked characteristic was his thoughtfulness, his care for others, his unfailing kindness to everyone who had the good fortune to cross his path. Perhaps it was not surprising that, at his funeral, his friends, most of them his own age, lined the streets between his home in West Street and The Square to follow his coffin, and to fill the church almost beyond capacity.

The philosophical acceptance and courage he demonstrated in his struggle to live with Epilepsy would have been remarkable in someone much older; in someone only just out of his teens, and with other medical problems as well to deal with, it was surely exceptional. It is natural and normal to fear death: not only is it the frightening thought of leaving behind all that we hold dear in life and the not-knowing what, if anything, lies ahead; it is also fear of the process of dying. What might we have to suffer? as Joss was, the idea of dying seems so far into the future as to be not worth bothering about - unless you have an illness that might be life-threatening, as he did. A healthy young person usually only thinks about it if it has been thrust into their consciousness when a loved relative or friend dies and then it is sometimes a rude shock that for a little while rocks their confidence.

Christians are as fearful of death as everyone else, but the Bible teaches, and in the Gospels emphatically demonstrates, that death is not an end, but a change. Jesus died a human death on the cross, but was resurrected to new life in a similar-looking but different, less-substantial, now-you-see-it-now-you- So far, no-one has disproved the Resurrection, though many have tried. There are all sorts of deeply theological and significant reasons for the Resurrection; but the simplest reason of all may be the best: it happened to show people that death is not The End, that life consciousness that knows I exist continues in a different form, in a different dimension, somewhere else.

This idea is what is known as the Christian Hope the hope that there is more to this present life than always meets the eye. It is a hope based on recorded evidence (amongst other things) and it is the hope that Christian ministers try to get across during a funeral service - not because it is dry theory, but because it is deeply felt, profoundly believed conviction that really does help

43

figment of the imagination; he is the living reality behind and beneath humdrum existence, who reaches out to each one us with everlasting love.

With love, Anne.

There is another week before my article is due for submission, but, in the light of the events in Paris yesterday, when 12 people were killed, by those who are presumed to be Islamist extremists, I felt compelled to put on one side everything else that needed to be done, and put down my initial reaction to the news that immediately filled the media channels.

Just in case anybody gets the wrong impression, let me say very clearly, right at the beginning, that I am totally against the evil that was committed, and, as far as I am concerned, however great the provocation, there is no justification for the carrying out of these deliberate murders.

But now let me get down to the reason for writing. The French President went on teleDavid Secretary of the United Nations struck a similar note when he said that what took

assault on a cornerstone of democracy, on the media, and on

The point that I want to make is, that any civilized society has to balance the gift of freedom with the necessary restrictions on freedom. To talk of freedom, may sound great, especially in an election year, but, because of what mankind is capable of, freedom has to be restricted. I believe that it was the Frenchman

. If there was total freedom, then yesterdays murders could be justified by the terrorists, who could claim that they were only exercising their freedom, the freedom to kill those who had offended them.

By being part of a society, we forfeit part of the freedom that we might otherwise wish to possess. If you are a parent, you are not free to decide whether your child should be educated or not. If you are an employee, you are not free to decide whether you want to pay Income Tax and the National Insurance Contributions. But it becomes even more complicated than that. Coming from Birmingham, as a child I would have meant no offense by referring to a black person

n owner of a football club recently found out, there are restrictions on how you can refer to the Jews and the Chinese. Freedom is continually being restricted, and the restrictions are necessary, for the good of society.

47

This morning I picked up the Radio Times to see what was on this evening. We , but I happened to notice that at 10.00 pm this

evening, y

ed are adults, and they are only expressing their desire for sexual freedom. And those who are employed to organize these orgies are expressing their freedom to earn an income in whatever way they choose. And the B.B.C. are expressing their freedom, by showing a programme that will last more than an hour, even though some would be concerned that their T.V. license is being used in this way.

We all want to be free. The child reaches the age when they want to be free from e teenager wants to be free from parental control.

The young married couple does not want to live with parents or their in-laws, given a choice, and the desire for freedom continues to the last few years of our

n though there is a lot that they now es

have got to do. They want to maintain their independence, which is another name for freedom.

We all want to be free, but, when we stop and think, we recognise that there has to be restrictions on our freedom, for the good of the society that we are part of. The big question is, here do we draw the line

France refused to draw the line, to prevent a magazine from publishing that which they knew would be offensive to many people, and would cause others to resort to violence. Hugh Schofield of the B.B.C. says of the magazine,

seems to resort to belittling another person, or mocking those who hold opinions

In the name of freedom, anything goes; nothing is forbidden. You can say whatever you like about God, Christians, Muslims, or Jews, at least up to a point, even though the language you use will be highly offensive to many people, for whom such beliefs are part of who they are, and represent the very fabric of life. This morning I am reminded that the One who sai also

Where do you want to draw the line? What is unacceptable behaviour, as far as you are concerned? And what is the solution, when we want to draw the line in different places. The neighbour from hell, is somebody expressing their own form of freedom.

Joss would be so proud to see the RBL Standard Bearers turn out for him and to see the amazing number of people that attended his funeral on 5th January.

anyone.

Rev: Anne Bond for doing such an amazing job of presenting the service.

Mark and the team at Albert Marsh for looking after us and Joss so beautifully and coping with the amazing amount of people that came to the service so

professionally.

Angie Churchill and Russell Sawyer for organising the refreshments

And finally

To The Corfe Massive and the rest of the crew for the fantastic presentation of the collage pictures to us both. It was very moving and showed just how much

you all thought of Joss.

We would like everyone to know that the collection tins raised £330.70 for Epilepsy Action which is a fabulous tribute to our son and a fantastic effort by

all.

Thank you all again for giving Joss the amazing send-off to the angels he deserved.

Langton Arthouse Cinema

Hall, recounts Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's monumental and historical ascent of Mount Everest. In 1953, Everest remained the last of Earth's great challenges. Standing at over 29,000ft, the world's highest mountain posed a fearsome challenge and had already claimed thirteen lives in previous expeditions. Faced with treacherous winds, sub-zero temperatures and battling altitude sickness, Edmund Hillary, a modest bee-keeper and keen mountaineer from Auckland, New Zealand, and the very experienced Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, of Nepal, finally achieved the impossible and became the first men to stand atop Everest. It was an event that stunned the world and defined an era. Hillary and Tenzing carried the hopes and dreams of the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the people of the Himalayas and the entire British Empire on their shoulders. As the world slowly recovered from the horrors of World War II their efforts allowed people everywhere to believe a new age was dawning. For the first time, and with the support of the Hillary family, Sir Edmund's story is brought to life on the big screen, 'relived' using original footage, photographs and newsreels as well as dramatized reconstructions of the ascent. Tickets will be £5 on the door which will open at 7pm. Glasses will be supplied should you wish to bring your own drink with you. If you want to be kept informed about future films you can add your name to the mailing list by emailing [email protected] or visit www. LangtonArthouseCinema.co.uk. Chris Kwantes

The street lights and decorations create a very warm and welcoming scene, more so than in previous years. Kimmeridge News - February 15 Pamela Sylvia McClintock 1926 2014 Kimmeridge Church was packed on Monday 12th January for the funeral of Pam McClintock. Pam was brought up at Smedmore in the 20s & 30s and in later years was PCC Secretary for Kimmeridge Parish Church. Michael McClintock gave an excellent eulogy covering and exciting life including her service in the WAAF during the war, working for Hansard, her time in Nigeria and more recently her championing of support

funeral service. The repair work is still going on; but at the time of writing the lighting and heating are back on and Smedmore Joinery have started work on the roof repairs. We do now have a usable building, although more work will need to be done in the future to replace the rather aged heating and lighting systems. Christmas Eve Nativity Service

y g gchildren was supplemented, to good effect, by three of the parents making it a real family Nativity. The Hall was packed and the atmosphere was very happy and relaxed. Several people asked if we could hold it in the hall again next year and this was agreed it will be a very special celebration for our last Christmas in the old Village Hall.

Those of you that have visited exotic coral reefs may be familiar with a group of fish called Tthe vast majority live in warm tropical seas and many are brightly coloured and highly patterned. We do however get one particular species frequenting the Dorset coastline- the Grey Triggerfish.

Triggerfish get their name from an unusual adapatation they have to help them evade predators. Their front dorsal fin is formed by three spines and the first spine can be locked into an upright position. This enables the fish, which has a very thin shape, to wedge itself into narrow cracks and crevices, safe from the grasping jaws of predators. Even the Grey Triggerfish, that spends most of its time in the open ocean, still makes use of this valauable tactic. Like many fish they use pieces of floating debris as shelter from larger predators, so they use their trigger to hide away amoungst driftwood and in recent years, plastic litter.

Shoals of Triggerfish begin to form around around wrecks, rocky outcrops and piers from late summer and stay living in these areas throughout the autumn months. During this period they can be seen reliably by divers on wrecks like the Adelaide off Chesil Beach and have also been spotted in the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve. Very few survive our cold and stormy winters and most will perish with some washing up on beaches for us to find.

Numbers of Triggerfish in the UK have been increasing over the last 20 years. Some say this may be due to climate change causing our waters to warm up and others say it could be the increase in man-made litter floating around the ocean, and that the Triggerfish are carried here by the Gulf Stream with their mobile plastic shelter.

Next time you visit the beach after some story weather look out for these unfortunate casualties and marvel at their clever adapatations and the amazing journey they have taken!

The marine centre at Kimmeridge is on winter opening times which is every Sunday from 12.00pm until 4.00pm as well as every day except Monday during the February Half-Term (14th-22nd of February) from 12pm-4pm.
