Comment: Blood films will be made, examined and reported on patients whose FBC
results satisfy the criteria laid down by this laboratory in the guidelines
‘Indications for blood film examination’. If a clinician specifically requests
a blood film, which falls outside of these guidelines this will also be
examined, where the request form indicates the agreed clinical details.
Specimen must be received within 2 hours of phlebotomy to avoid EDTA
changes on the blood film.

Bone Marrow Examination
The facility to take Bone Marrow Samples is no longer available in Mayo
University Hospital. Patients are now referred to Galway University

Fine Needle Aspirates (FNA) of breast, thyroid, axilla, parotid, submandular, lymph
node and cysts
Laboratory: Histopathology (Cytology)
Specimen: Superficial and deep seated lesions. Deep seated lesions that need ultrasonic,
CT or fluoroscopic guidance may be required. Use a 22–25 gauge fine
needle and a 10–20mL syringe for collection of specimen. Prepare a thin
even smear on a clean microscope slide(s). Immediately after preparation,
spray a complete even coating of Cell-Fix onto the slides from a distance of
25–30 cm (10–12 inches). Fixed slides will be dry between one and five
minutes. Label, place in cassette and send to the laboratory.
Alternately transfer the aspirate into Shandon Cytospin Collection Fluid
(green fixative solution) and the lab will prepare the slides.
Turnaround: ≥80% of results are returned in 5 days

I.M. Screen (Infectious Mononucleosis)*

Specimen: Either a clotted sample or 3.0 mL K3 EDTA blood, (1.3 mL Paediatric tubes
are available). Sample must be less than 48 hours. Same sample can be used
for FBC and I.M.
Turnaround: 1 day. Telephoned requests for faster turnaround time can be accommodated
on particularly urgent specimens.
Limitations: 50% of children <4 years and up to 20% adults give a false negative result.
If clinically indicated, negative results should be confirmed by EBV assay.

Comment: Blood film is examined microscopically. The blood is tested for the
presence of parasite associated enzyme. Travel history and clinical details
essential.
Turnaround: 3 hrs. Second scientist confirms results of this test done out of hours or on
weekends as soon as possible on the next working day.
Report: Positive/Negative. Where clinically indicated a negative specimen may be
referred to a reference centre for analysis by PCR. All positive samples are
referred to the Malaria Reference Laboratory in London for confirmation
