FOREWORD
Commercializing R&D results, aimed at developing products processes based
on indigenous raw materials, often needs pilot scale studies for design and
development of prototype equipment and for production of semi-commercial
quantities of products for market surveys, techno-economic studies etc. Due
to lack of suitable scaled-down processing equipment and other facilities and
also due to lack of expertise and resources to develop them within a reasonable
period of time, most R&D studies for process and product development in
developing countries end-up on the laboratory bench. Therefore, there is an
urgent need within the region to compile information on facilities and expertise
in process engineering/pilot plant capabilities within the region and develop
viable mechanisms to share these facilities, experiences and expertise for the
benefit of the region. Hence it was proposed by Sri Lanka that a survey
of facilities and expertise in the area of process engineering/pilot plant
capabilities be undertaken by the SAARC Technical Committee for S&T
with a view to co lied, compile and disseminate relevant information, and
develop viable mechanisms for sharing the facilities and expertise on a
collaborative basis.

Notes Actual pilot plant research Csciihy is not readily available in Bangladesh. This facility is only available at BCS1R Laboratory in Dhaka and Chittagong. A few research Organisations have facilities for only bench scale research. Some details rcqucstcdin the questionnaire could not be obtained due to the following reasons:
1. The Manuals were not available.
2. The laboratories/respective institutions were not in a position to provide the detailed information about the equipment.
3. Most of die equipment are quite old and it was difficult to 'read out' the information given on the specification plate.
* Capacity - Small :
The instruction manuals of these equipment were not available. But the prudent guess is that their capacities arc slightly higher than the laboratory scale. Sometimes these equipment have been used for laboratory scale studies and some limes for pilot plant studies.

The preliminary steps of vegetable oil preparation are foIlowed for vegetable ghee processing and the process diverts from ( IMT s to rage ) as shown in the previous flow chart. From there the next processes ,are as following:-
