The Early Years Statutory Framework (2017) states that:

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

All children who are 2, 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to access a free early learning place in a daycare setting/ playgroup, childminder or with a school. Eligibility criteria for parents apply to 2 year old children and also for those wishing to access an additional 15 hours because they are from a working household.

Parents need to register their child for a place at a setting

Parents need to check their eligibility at www.childcarechoices.co.uk

Parents are given a letter with a code to take to a setting to receive 15 hours free funding. 2 year old funding continues until a child becomes eligible for 3 year old funding.

All children are entitled to 15 hours free funding and to access the Early Years Foundation Stage.

If eligible parents will be given a code, the code must then be taken to a provider offering 30 hours. The provider will validate the code before the funding is agreed; parents have to reconfirm their eligibility and entitlement to the additional 15 hours.
