So what is The Dirt Worker you ask? It’s a few things, but the quick version is that it’s part editorial and part advertorial, bringing you up to date with new and special products, closeouts and crazy deals. It will also let you know what is happening at Dirt Works, be it staff, events, results or product reviews.

Keep an eye on: http://issuu.com/search?q=dirt%2520works&st=document

You should find a fresh new Dirt Worker roughly every month.

What’s New?Page 4; this issue we introduce “page 4”. It’s a quick way to let you know what has just arrived. Some brands/product lines are all new (and you’ll often find a page or two devoted to them in the Dirt Worker), and some are re-stocks of previously sold out lines. Either way... a great way to get up to speed on what’s just landed in DW HQ.

Who’s New?Ame; Ame’s been with us a while, deftly handling warranty matters since having a baby late last year. But she’s just moved into a full time role in accounts.

A sad farewell to:Dave; A long standing voice on the phones, a crazed weight weenie and a cyclocrosser. Daves level of tech knowledge and dedication to the pursuit of less weight will be missed. As will his seemingly endless quiver of “dad jokes”. (you can read his sad farewell on page 11)

Lachie; Our accounts collection master is moving on to new pastures. We’ll all miss Lachie’s infectious smile and good nature.

Josh; Thanks to Josh, we all know a lot more about the value of $80 baseball caps. Josh has been in the warehouse for a while now and he’s moving on to a plumbing apprenticeship.

EventsDT Swiss Mountains to Beach Mark and Pat spent a fantastic week cleanig bikes with Muc-Off and hooking people up with test rides on DT Swiss wheels. a fun time was had by all.

Mont 24 Hour, March 27-28; the Dirt Works Popstar Racing Team will be cranking out the not-so-hot laps at the Mont 24 hour. Pop by our display to shoot the breeze or maybe test ride a Niner or Ibis?

*NEWS FLASH*Call in to the DW stand at the Mont24, bring a bottle of cold drinkable beer and we’ll swap you, a full bottle of beer - for a full bottle of Muc-Off!

(To redeem you must bring a printed copy of this page to the DW stand at the 2010 Mont 24hour. Beer for Muc-Off deal is only available to persons over the age of 18. If you’re not sure if you’re over 18 or not... ask your parents )

612 cranksetThe 612 Track Crank (six-one-two) is an extremely stiff and strong 144BCD track crank. It is at home on the busy avenues of your city as it is on the boards of the velodrome. The 612 is cold forged, allowing for a better grain structure in the metal and producing a stronger and more durable part. It utilizes the classic JIS square taper spindle and comes with a color matched 46 tooth 1/8th chainring. available in: Anno’ Red, Gold, Black, White

rrp: $225

Big Block bikeThis is the bike that we’ve always dreamed of building and we are proud to make that dream available to you. Each size frame has been evaluated for optimum tubing butt placements, diameter, and wall thickness. Attention to detail is our mantra, and it shows in every aspect of this bike. It soaks up bumps, sprints like mad, and begs to be ridden hard. Ride it on the street or take it to the boards, the Big Block will hold up its’ end of the deal wherever you choose to ride it.

rrp: $1450

Star bmx gripsHarder rubber stars on a softer rubber compound make for a great no slip grip. Multiple color combinations to suit any bike, these are a stone cold classic and favorite of the BMX, mountain bike and fixie worlds.

rrp: $29.50

Star track gripsThese are the same diameter as the BMX grips. Colours: Blk w/lime, blk w/pink, blk w/red, blk w/white, light blue w/white, pink w/white, royal blue w/light blue, red w/white.

rrp: $79 ($89 - white)

Std Track pedalThe Standard Track Pedal is a great value basic track pedal that was designed to accomodate double straps. The Standards represent a high benchmark for low cost pedals.

Dropout frameThe Dropout is a platform for pretty much anything you want to do that involves big wheels and hard riding. It can handle trails, jumps, hardcourt, messengering, whatever. Instead of paint this baby is ED finished for rust prevention and then powdercoated for ultimate durability. The fully heat treated fork (stronger) has been designed with some flex to make landings more comfortable and we’ve designed some very trick fork ends with integrated “lawyer” tabs. Elvis - fat bikes are funI built myself up a Surly Pugsley last year. If you’re not aware, the Pugsley has 4” wide tyres, mounted onto a 65mm wide rim. I built it (initially) for the 2010 Simpson Desert Bike Challenge. I rode (and walked) the desert in 2008 and 2009 on a regular mtb. It was difficult and guess what? Sand really is soft! In short... I should’ve listened to people that told me to ride a Pugsley. Experiance is like that. It’s great in hindsite...

But... having built the Pug’ “just” for the sand, a funny thing happened. I took it off-road on my local trails. I rode it to work on the M4 freeway. I rode it while camping over the holidays. You know what I learned?

This bike rocks!

Forget “lines”... heh heh... we don’t need no lines. The Pug’ is a behometh that can not be stopped by mere “trails”. It rolls over anything and everything in sight. More importantly... it’s more fun than one should be allowed to have on a bicycle.. to find out more: www. surlybikes.com/frames/pugsley_frame/

Dave Rome - my time at DWAs I leave the promised land of Dirt Works to further my studies, I look back at the past 28 months. I am sure to miss the awesome times had; both at the office and out. Lifelong friends have been made and dream bikes have been built.

Many people now know me as the obsessed weight weenie bike whore. Recently I’ve built up a collection of Salsa and Ibis bikes in the garage. I’m most proud of the Salsa Chilli Con Crosso Cyclo-Cross bike, 7.8kg of speed and the 8kg Ibis Tranny, sure it’s single speed but it’s just plain fun! Throw in the Ibis Mojo SL, Salsa Podio roadie, Salsa Casserol singlespeed and the Salsa race hardtail and I’m starting to live up to my reputation.

Thanks to the crew of Dirt Works and all the dealers for the awesome experiences. See you all at the Cyclo Cross Worlds when they come to Australia!

Keep the rubber side off the ground.

Dave Rome. 11
