Don Beld, an internationally known quiltmaker

and lecturer, has brought the culture of America to

life with his one of a kind story quilts.

What an inspirational Guild meeting we had in November!! The quilts shown by

Cindy Needham, our Guest Speaker, were breath taking. It was so very interesting to

see how she used vintage linens and turned them into gorgeous quilts. The intricacies,

the detail of quilting, and the beading were amazing. Each of her quilts contains a

story documented by Cindy, making them even more special and memorable. Her

    quilts are truly amazing.

My brain is filled with excitement. Ideas are flowing. New techniques, new creations, where will I

begin? Cindy Needham presented an outstanding workshop. I think that all who attended were in-

spired to step out of their box to create an heirloom piece using a vintage doily, dresser scarf, or other

piece of linen either created or treasured by their mother, their grandmother, or another special per-

son. We learned the basics, enabling us to begin our own masterpieces. With Cindy’s patience and

careful guidance we will all be able to create a one of a kind treasure that can be passed on. I am sure

that our first attempts will not be as exquisite as Cindy’s, but the memories will be priceless.

As projected, our Tea and Auction was a huge success. It far exceeded our expectations. Thank you

to co-chairs, Justine Gentile and Sharon Hritz for guiding us. All the committee chairs did an out-

standing job of organizing their crews. Our Auctioneer, Lyn Mann was spectacular. The auctioned

quilts were awesome, the gift baskets were beautiful, boutique items were the envy of all, and the

    food was yummy. There was a lot of “behind the scenes” action. Thank you to all who participated;

it took all of us to make the day a success.

Congratulations to our newly elected Executive Board. President Ellen Roman, along with Susan

Johnson, Merci Apodaca, Nancy Post, and Judi Smith are an exceptional group of ladies who will

guide our Guild on an exciting adventure in 2010.

We are winding down, 2009 is coming to an end. Please remember to count and tally your com-

pleted projects. Also, the days are dwindling that you can step out of your box. Time to give it one

    last try.

The holidays are quickly approaching. It will soon be Thanksgiving and then on to Hanukkah and

Christmas. Be sure to take time for yourself, relax, put your feet up and enjoy. Above all, remember

to “Keep on Quilting” because that is what we do best.

I hope to see all of you at our December meeting. Please remember we will meet December 2nd,

which is the first week of the month.

Ways ‘N’ Means Thank you again for the support you are giving to Ways and Means. Your contributions really make a

    Lippincott. Happy Thanksgiving!

November 5th was delivery day for the 30 quilts we

made for the Veterans First Project. Yvonne Williams,

Carol Munn and Carol Howerton took the quilts to the

Anaheim location -- three large homes, newly painted in-

side and out and refurbished with new furniture, pictures,

lamps, beds, etc. It was a hectic day with old furniture go-

ing out and new coming in. As fast as the new beds were

put together, volunteers were picking out the quilts they

wanted for the beds. It was a hard choice as they were all

so beautiful. The Furnishing Hope people were in awe of

the fabulous job, time and work that went into each quilt.

They marveled at each one. It was kinda like us —if some-

one told one of us we could only have one of the 30

choices. I thought we were going to have a tug of war there

for a while. I wished we could have seen the looks on the

veterans’ faces when they came home to their “new

homes.” Thanks to all who helped. You did a fabulous job.

And an extra thanks for the gals that took my binding job

when my back and shoulder went out.

Comfort, Hope and Promise, a military outreach dedi-

cated to support of our troops and their families, picked up

the goodies and 190 Christmas stockings we gave them for

the troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Thanks to all

who helped. More of our Habitat for Humanity Phase II

quilts came in and more were taken to be finished. Please

remember to bring back your finished Christmas

stockings to the Dec. 2nd meeting. We have others we’d

still like to give them to. Also remember to bring un-

wrapped toys for 3/1 Marines Santa picture taking

party to the Dec. 2 meeting. Eight pillow cases were

turned in, 11 quilt tops, 19 finished quilts and Habitat for

Humanity quilts were turned in. I still have 72 quilt kits

hanging out in my garage, and lots of

tops that can’t be put into kits until I

get rid of the 72 others. Door Prizes:

    Eva Jamar, Glenna Tuomala won

    fabric packs from Moores; Betty

Jean Wenner won a quilt panel,

Thayone Jones won a charm pack,

    both from Bunny Hutch; Marge

    Densmore won $15 gift certificate

from Singer Sewing Center. The City

of Huntington Beach Project Self-Sufficiency could use

help if anyone is interested in giving a Christmas tree or

    adopt-a-family. Call them at 714-536-5263 or 714-536-

5439. Many thanks for your help at this busy time of year.

THREE SPECTACULAR LADIES SHARE UNSUNG GLORY

Our Unsung Heroes for the month of Novem-

ber are three very special Guild ladies. All three

are rather quiet ladies who work in the back-

ground. I think that they will each do just about

anything if it will benefit our Guild. How lucky

we are to have them as members. Linda Majer

and Janice Robb are always ready to help our

speakers. They can be asked two days in advance

or two minutes in advance, they are always willing

with a smile and a white glove. They are an ex-

pert team. Joann Schaum works wonders on a

computer. She did all of the data processing for

our Tea and Auction. Whew!! What a superb job!!!!

Thank you Joann!!! Congratulations to to the ladies above, Joann, Janice and Linda.

brought in a total of 373 lids! That's

Keep it up. Remember, the December

If you are unable to make the meeting, please either

deliver them to my home or mail them. I have to have

    Update on Food Bank Collection

We donated 186 pounds of food this month. They

were making up the Thanksgiving food boxes and

said that our food would make a very nice addition.!

We will be collecting this month also for the food

bank’s Christmas boxes. They will also take walkers,

    wheelchairs, medical supplies. etc.

Mama Says: Join the Challenge! O.K. There still is time to find your idea of what you

remember about your mom, or what your kids and friends

remember about you. There’s a whole lot of ideas out

there, and if you have access to a computer and type in

quilts, decorated bras you’ll see some of the ideas that I’ve

been getting emails about. There was a contest to decorate

your favorite bra, but I’ve gotten my idea from what I re-

member my mom saying and what my own son said that he

remembered about what I said as a mother.

Many of you have taken on the challenge and will

have fun creating an idea or theme about your mom. Start-

ing next month I’ll have tickets for you to sign in that

you’ve been thinking or working on your challenge quilt.

I’ll have some prizes each month and then in February

we’ll look at all the quilts. Think of a theme or category

that goes with your quilt and you can win a prize, maybe

you’ll be the only one entered in that category. It’s always

fun to win. I still have kits available and will bring them to

the December meeting. Thanks to all of you who have pur-

chased kits ...have fun creating your challenge quilt.

New Braves Above—from left, Jane McCrumb, Betty Jean

Wenner, Linda Gray and Mary Kay O’Neill

Three New Braves Join the Tribe! Three ladies received Brave Awards for working out-

side of their box. Mary Kay O’Neill has done some thread

painting. She found it fun and fascinating and a challenging

way to create. We would love to have you share it at Show

and Tell, Mary Kay. Linda Gray created a portrait quilt of

her granddaughter and herself. Linda said that it was a tedi-

ous project, but that it will be a treasured keepsake once it

is completed. Betty Jean Wenner is working on designing

an appliqué border for one of her quilts. However, even

though Betty Jean’s name was selected from the basket she

had to pass her Brave on because she was a “Brave” win-

ner in September. She passed hers on to Jane McCrumb

who stated that she has been working on a myriad of pro-

jects. It is always fun to try something new and challeng-

    ing. Way to go ladies!!!!!!

Betty Jean was not the only lady to pass her Brave on

because she owned two. Marie Blash

passed her second Brave to Dianne

Hoffman. Dianne stepped out and found

a wonderful new location for our 2010

    Workshops. Thank you Dianne. Linda

Majer awarded her second Brave to

Peggy Schneider who was sitting five

seats down the row from her. Lucky,

Peggy, to be sitting in the right place

    at the right time.
