What is TV Drama?

We will go through the varying sub-genres of TV Drama according to Glen Creeber (2001).

This is a theory YOU MUST apply to the introduction of your Section A Exam answer VERY briefly.

Page 6: Disability

Single Play TV Drama =

A one off TV Drama (docu-drama for example)

Long Form TV Drama =

A continual multi-episode/series where the narrative concludes at the end of a series and/or leaves the audience on a cliff hanger. This is the most common for of TV Drama.

Page 7: Disability

These are the different types of TV Drama that you SHOULD make a brief reference to in your Introduction.

For example –

“The essay will focus on the costume drama (Creeber – 2001) ‘Name of TV Drama HERE’ and how the technical features help construct the representation of…”

Page 8: Disability

“…construct the representation of…”

YOU WILL be asked to analyse ONE of the SEVEN areas of Representation above. This changes EVERY year so YOU WILL need to be prepared to answer a question on ALL SEVEN areas.

Page 9: Disability

These are details about the TV Drama YOU WILL be analysing, however the only important thing worth referring to in the exam is the name of the text and identify what sub-genre it is according to Glen Creeber (2001)

This is where the exam changes every year – “the representation of…” – from this list.

The structure of the exam question stays the same with the areas in yellow the only alterations.

Page 10: Disability

We will now go through these 4 Technical areas by going to:

http://ncrafts.wordpress.com

This page, along with many others under the

WILL help you to prepare for this Section of the exam, along with PRACTICE – PRACTICE – PRACTICE!

Textual Analysis Task – PAIRS12 minutes

Using the worksheet you have just been given, YOU MUST analyse the following 3 technical areas to see how the representation of Disability is constructed.

YOU SHOULD write down examples from the text (at least 3 per. Technical area) to support the Points you make with Evidence. You will then need to Analyse what impact this intended representation is meant to have on the audience –Key terms: Stereotypes and Anti-stereotypes

Unit G322: Key Concepts (TV Drama)

Using the notes that you have made on your worksheet YOU MUST then Evaluate:

How Disability was represented?

Mr Crafts will assign you a technical area to reflect on, where you must decide what example(s) you are going to write about in this lesson in a paragraph.

Page 18: Disability

For example:

The technical code of the broken frame, high angle shot through the stairs looking down on Mr Bates looking up at the camera connotes…..

The technical code of the POV (Point of view) shot looking at Mr Bates walking stick, which cuts to a reverse shot of the other workers reactions, connotes…

The non-verbal code of Ms O’Briens facial expression can be denoted as….This connotes how disabled people are stereotyped as….

The non-verbal code of Mr Bates black attire connotes his arrival at Downton Abbey as being…

The diegetic verbal code of dialogue “EXAMPLE HERE” connotes how disability in this Period drama is represented as…

Page 19: Disability

FEEDBACK – How do these technical areas construct the representation of Disability?

Page 20: Disability
