USS ENTERPRISE, At sea –Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) are encouraged to become familiar with a Navy program designed to help Sailors keep up with the status and readiness of their families if they are affected by a natural disaster. The Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFAAS) system is intended to account, manage, and monitor the recovery process for personnel and their families affected by a wide-spread catastrophic event. Back home, families have seen a high number of natural disasters in 2011, including hurricanes, tornados and massive floods, and many Enterprise Sailors may worry about the safety of their families living there on top of their already stressful duties while deployed. “It is a really important program for Sailors because everyone cherishes their families,” said Personnel Specialist Seaman Richard Maltby, a personnel clerk who works with Sailors aboard the Big ‘E’ with family issues. “It definitely reassures us out here to know that our families are safe and sound back home.” Once a Sailor and his or her family has registered on NFAAS on-line, the system can track families back home by allowing them to log-on and update their status in the wake of a disaster.

Families can also assess and update recovery needs using an on-line assessment tool, which lists their needs in 19 categories, ranging from needing medical resources to needing help locating missing family members. “It’s always important to be in good contact with your families and to know their needs, but it’s even more important now,” said Maltby. “It seems like every time you turn on the news there’s a weather-related incident back home, and hurricane season is approaching, so this is a great tool to use.” If a natural disaster does occur and a family is affected and needs help, families’ inputs on the NFAAS website will be assessed and a representative from the Fleet and Family Support Center will be

assigned to the family as a case manager to assist them with whatever they may need. NFAAS is not only for Sailors’ family members. It is also used by the Navy to help track Sailors deployed or stationed to areas affected by natural disasters. Sailors stationed in these areas, which the Navy refers to as geographic areas of interest (GAOI), must register online with NFAAS in order to help keep track of them if their base is struck by a disaster. If a Sailor or his or her family is affected by a disaster while living in a GAOI, they are required to check in with NFAAS at the first available opportunity. This can be done by the Sailor reporting back to their command and reporting directly to their supervisors, by updating their status on

The 2011 Enterprise Hurricane Preparedness Manual, a resource for families back home, can be found on the Enterprise Web site at www.enterprise.navy.mil.

BMSN Molinarojas, a maintenance person of Enterprise’s Deck Department, joined the Navy two years ago to “make my family proud.” Molinarojas says the most rewarding aspect of her job is “helping conduct underway replenishments, because of the fresh fruit.” Molinarojas is working hard to move up in rank as high and fast a possible and would like to buy a house and start a family. In her spare time, Molinarojas likes to study ESWS and “gain the knowledge that makes me a better Sailor.”

AZ2 Laurion, a maintenance control assistant leading petty officer for Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron (HS) 11, joined the Navy four years ago to earn money for college, learn a trade and “do something productive with my life.” Laurion says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “giving back by serving my country.” Laurion aspires to finish his Navy term honorably, then complete a degree in mass communication and work in broadcast radio.
