DISASTERS?

A serious disruption of the functioning of a

society, causing widespread human,

material, or environmental losses which

exceed the ability of the affected society to

cope using its own resources."

Are disasters caused by people or by

nature?

Natural phenomena can sometimes strike

very hard and cause disasters if preventivemeasures have not been taken or if some

human activities have harmed the natural

environment or upset the balance of the

ecosystem.

Solid waste management

in emergencies

The objective of managing solid waste People

should be able to live in an environment that

is uncontaminated by solid waste, including

medical waste, and have the means to dispose

of their domestic waste conveniently and

effectively.

E-waste: Environment's next big threat«!

Ever wondered what happens after you replaceyour old mobile phone for a fancy music phone

thats just hit the market?

Where does your old computer go once you decide

to buy that long awaited notebook?

Where do you think your VCR is now, that you havemoved onto a DVD player.?

Present Trend in INDIA

India dumping ground for 'e waste'?

India is becoming the developed nation¶s

favourite dumping ground as they dump over

50,000 tones of e-waste, including old PC's,

mobiles and television sets. The desert state

too gets its share

Page 17: Disater management and Emergency Life support

Those working in the field say

that India provides high economic

gains for such dismantlers as it costs US$ 20 to

recycle a PC in the US, while in India, it can be done

at a tenth of that price.!

Also because the law enforcement in metros is strict, dismantlers are shifting base to smaller cities and

making money. This explains the emergence of such

organizations in non IT states like Rajasthan.

Datasets produced by these means and

managed under GIS could be used by localauthorities to carry out many of the municipal

planning activities related to risk management.

Moreover, these data could be used for other

administrative and decision-making purposes.

Disaster risk reduction begins in the family. The frequency and magnitude of disasters hasincreased over recent years clearly

demonstrating the need to develop new riskreduction strategies to reduce death, injuryand adverse affects on livelihoods.

Building safer communities«.
