OUR STATEMENTS………….I. BIBLICAL BASIS
The basis of the purpose of our church is summarized in a single sentence based on two key scriptures:
"WE BELIEVE A GREAT COMMITMENT TO THE GREAT __COMMISSION______ AND THE
GREAT_____COMMANDMENT______________WILL GROW A GREAT CHURCH!"
The Great Commission: 18
Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20
teaching them to observe everything I have

The Great Commandment: “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 “This is the most
important,” Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, The Lord is One. 30 Love the Lord your
God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 “The
second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:28-32(HCSB)
The Great Empowerment: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will
be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (HCSB)
From these three passages we find the SIX PURPOSES of our church which form the basis of all we do:
1. “GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES." __EVANGELISM_of our community by communicating
God‘s love and desire for a transforming relationship with them through Christ.
"Always be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope
that you have." I Peter 3:15 (NIV)
2. “GO … TO ALL NATIONS” “ENDS OF THE EARTH” _______MISSIONS_____ outreach to
extend God’s Kingdom by establishing new churches and mission points around the world.
"... you will be my witnesses... to all the world." Acts 1:8
"(God) desires all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth." I Tim. 2:4
3. "BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME." __FELLOWSHIP_ incorporation of new believers as
members into God's family, His church.
"You are a member of God's very own family and you belong in God's household with
every other Christian." Ephesians 2:19 (LB)
4. “TEACH THEM TO OBSERVE." _DISCIPLESHIP_ development by equipping and edifying
God's people.
"...building up the church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity... until all
become full grown in the Lord.” Ephesians 4:12b-13 (LB)
5. “LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD." __WORSHIP__ our Master by celebrating His presence.
"O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together." Psalm 34:3
"I was glad when they said unto me, `Let us go into the house of the Lord.'" Psalm 122:1
6. "LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR." ___MINISTRY__ through spiritual gifts-based ministry and
demonstration of God's love to the world.

Our Mission Statement:
First Baptist Church of Broussard exists to bring glory to God and be a ‘Lighthouse of Faith,
Hope and Love’. We seek to be…Fully Devoted Worshippers of God; Fully Committed Disciples
of Jesus Christ; and Fully Empowered Ministers through the Holy Spirit.

THE PURPOSE FOR THIS CLASS:
"...that you may become mature Christians and may fulfill God's will for you." Col.4:12B

Discipleship 101 supports the DISCIPLESHIP purpose of our "Five Purpose" plan.
THE FOCUS OF THIS CLASS:
We will focus on the Five Basic Disciplines every Christian needs to develop in order to grow to spiritual
maturity. This class will...
• Equip you with the skills you need to begin these disciplines
• Explain the tools you need to continue these disciplines
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS CLASS:
• To lead believers to MATURITY and become committed to studying the Bible and
building a foundation of PRINCIPLES to live by.
PHILOSOPHY AND VALUES STATEMENT SUPPORTED BY THIS CLASS:
• Believers should be 100 % Fully Devoted Worshippers of God; Fully Committed
Disciples of Jesus Christ; and Fully Empowered Ministers through the Holy Spirit. .
THE GOAL OF THIS CLASS:
That I will COMMIT to the disciplines and habits necessary for spiritual maturity. "In the past you voluntarily gave your bodies to the service of vice and ... the purposes of evil.

WHAT IS "SPIRITUAL MATURITY?"
"...In the unity of common faith, and knowledge of the Son of God, we arrive at real maturity - the
measure of development which is meant by "the fullness of Christ." Eph. 4:13
Spiritual Maturity is BEING LIKE CHRIST.
"For from the beginning God decided that those who came to him...should become like his Son”
Rom. 8:29
FACTS ABOUT SPIRITUAL MATURITY
1. IT'S NOT AUTOMATIC
"You have been Christians for a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others, but
instead...you need someone to teach you...When person is still living on milk, it shows he
isn't very far along in the Christian life...He's still a baby Christian!"
Heb. 5:12-13
2. IT IS A PROCESS
"Learn to be mature." Prov. 8:5
"Continue to grow in the grace & knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 3:18
There are no shortcuts!
3. IT TAKES DISCIPLINE
"Take the time and the trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit." 1 Tim. 4:7b
"Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness." 1 Tim. 4:7b (NAS)
SIX KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING DISCIPLESHIP
1. Mature believers are called DISCIPLES
2. I cannot be a disciple without being DISCIPLINED
3. The more disciplined I become THE MORE GOD CAN USE ME
4. The mark of a disciple is CROSS-BEARING
(Jesus) "Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."
Luke 14:27
5. How often am I to do this? DAILY
(Jesus) "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23
6. What is involved in "cross bearing"? WHATEVER IT TAKES to give Christ first place
in my life!
FIVE DISCIPLINES OF A DISCIPLE
HOW CAN I BECOME A DISCIPLE? Develop DISCIPLE-HABITS/DISCIPLINES
"You have put off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self which God is
continually renewing in his own image, to bring you a full knowledge of himself."

1. BIBLE STUDY/DEVOTIONAL TIME WITH GOD'S WORD
"If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples indeed. And you will know the truth
and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32
2. PRAYER
"If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, then you will ask for anything you wish,
and you shall have it...in this way you become my disciples." John 15:7-8
3. STEWARDSHIP
"None of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all of his possessions." Luke 14:33
"The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your lives." Deut. 14:23
"...from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded." Luke 12:48b
4. FELLOWSHIP
"...Love each other just as much as I love you. Your strong love for each other will prove to
the world that you are my disciples." John 13:34-35
5. WITNESSING
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father

THE DISCIPLES CROSS
DEFINITIONS:
• Disciple: A follower and learner whose ultimate goal is to live life the way Jesus would have us
live.
• Disciplines: A spiritual activity that helps me to do by direct effort under the guidance of the
Holy Spirit what I cannot now do by my own direct effort in my own strength.
• Disciplined Person: Someone who can do what needs to be done when God needs it to be
done.
I Corinthians 9:27 "...I harden (discipline) my body...And bring it under control, to keep myself
from being disqualified..."(GNB)
...Emphasis here is on training to live like Jesus, not just trying.
...The true goal of spiritual life is not just INFORMED people, not CONFORMED
people, but TRANSFORMED people. (John Ortbert)
"Romans 12:2...Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be ye TRANSFORMED
by the renewing of your mind. (NIV)
THE CHURCH: A DISCIPLE-MAKING PLACE
Disciple Making - Its Process
Definition: Disciple making is the intentional training of disciples with accountability on the basis
of loving relationships.
Disciple making is three-dimensional.
• Deliverance: conversion through evangelism
• Development: training - becoming established, strengthened, and nurtured in the faith. To be
prepared for the work of ministry.
• Deployment: moving out into mission
• Disciple making is not one of the things a church does.
• Making disciples is God's plan for building healthy churches and His strategy for reaching the
world.
• There are two levels of obedience to God: personal and corporate. Both require us to move
intentionally toward discipleship.
• The disciple making church is one where the leadership team has defined their purpose,
identified their product, determined how to make disciples, and are providing both an environment
and vehicles for its surrounding completion.
• You can't make disciples without accountability, and you can't have accountability without
structure.

Ways to Hear God's Word
• The Bible on tape • Church services & studies • Sermon tapes • Radio/TV teachers
PROBLEM: We forget 80-90 % of what we hear after 72 hours.
FIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEARING
1. Be ready and eager to hear God.
(Jesus) "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" Luke 8:8
"...Be quick to listen..." James 1:19
2. Deal with attitudes that prevent hearing God. Luke 8:4-15)
"Consider carefully how you listen..." Luke 8:18
- A Closed Mind: Is fear, pride or bitterness preventing me from hearing God?
- A Superficial Mind: Am I really serious about wanting to hear God speak?
- A Preoccupied Mind: Am I too busy and concerned with other things to concentrate on
what God has to say?
3. Confess any sin in your life.
"...Get rid of all moral filth and humbly accept the Word..." James 1:21
4. Take notes on what you hear.
"We must pay more careful attention to what we've heard, so that we do not drift away!" Heb. 2:1

5. Act on what you hear!
"Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says!" mes 1:22
"Whoever...does not simply listen and then forget it, but puts it into practice - that person
will be blessed in what he does." James 1:25
Charles Stanley Gives these “Ten Ways to Listen to God's Word”:
1. Eagerly (Neh. 8:1-2). When you come to a worship service, ask God to speak to your heart.
2. Attentively (Neh. 8:3). Your attention span is determined by your desire to know God and His will
for your life.
3. Trustingly (Neh. 8:4-5). Our world is unpredictable. We must place our faith in something that
gives us assurance—and God's Word is trustworthy.
4. Expectantly (Neh. 8:5). In Nehemiah's day, the people couldn't understand the original languages
of the scrolls. But they stood in anticipation of hearing God's Word.
5. Prayerfully (Neh. 8:6). The people bowed low and worshipped the Lord.
6. Patiently (Neh. 8:7). The people listened for hours as God's Word was read.
7. Humbly (Neh. 8:6). The people fell on their faces in humility because of their ancestors' sins, which
had caused them to miss the Lord's blessings.
8. Purposefully (Neh. 8:12-17).They wanted to gain insight into the Law. Each time you come to
church, ask God for insight about His character.
9. Happily. There was great joy when the people listened to the Law. You are responsible for your
own attitude toward church.
10. Repentantly (Neh. 9:1-3).The people listened with repentant hearts. If the Lord brings something
to your attention, don't blame the preacher. Be honest with God about it.

How often should I read God's Word? DAILY
"(The scriptures) shall be his constant companion. He must read from it everyday of his life so that he
will learn to respect the Lord his God by obeying all of his commands."
Deut. 17:19
SUGGESTIONS
• Read it systematically
• Read it in a Bible without notes
• Read it in different translations
(Good News, Living Bible, Phillips, New International Version)
• Read it aloud quietly to yourself
• Underline or color code key verses
• Choose a reading plan and stick with it
If I read approximately 15-20 minutes a day, I can read through the Bible once a year.

The difference between reading and studying the Bible is that you TAKE NOTES when you study.
The secret of effective Bible study is knowing how to ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.
THREE STEPS TO STUDYING YOUR BIBLE
STEP ONE: OBSERVATIONS
The first step in personal Bible study is to make several observations about the passage or book you
are studying. Like a good detective, we must train our eyes to see the obvious and the not so obvious.
We can learn to do this by bombarding the book or passage with questions. Rudyard Kipling once wrote:
I have six faithful serving men who taught me all I know, their names are What and Where and When
and How and Why and Who.
WHO Who is the author of the book? To whom is he writing? Who are the major and minor
characters?
WHERE Where do the events occur? Are there any references to towns, cities, provinces? If you are
reading a letter, where do the recipients live?
WHEN Are there any references to the time, day, month or year, or to when events took place in
relation to other events?
WHAT What actions or events are taking place? What words or ideas are repeated or are central to
the passage? What is the mood (joyous, somber)?
WHY Does the passage offer any reasons, explanations, statements of purpose?
HOW How is the passage written? Is it a letter, speech, poem, parable? Does the author use any
figures of speech (similes, metaphors)? How is it organized (around ideas, people, geography)?
STEP TWO INTERPRETATION When we interpret we seek to understand those facts discovered through careful observation.
Were there any words you didn't understand? Define them.
Did the author use figurative language? This needs to be unraveled.
Were major ideas presented? Try to grasp their meaning and significance.
Did you encounter any difficulties? See to resolve them.
Meaning, significance, explanation -- these are the goals of the interpreter.
How do you reach these goals?
And once you have reached them, how do you know you are not mistaken?
How then can we discover the author's meaning?
By following five steps:
1. Discover the historical context of the book.
2. Identify the type of literature you are studying. The biblical authors communicated in a variety
of ways -- through stories, letters, poems, proverbs, parables and symbols. The way they say things
adds richness and beauty to what they say.
3. Get an overview of the book. In Bible study it is helpful to get an overview of the book you are
studying.
4. Study the book passage by passage. Once you have an overview of the structure and contents of
a book, begin studying it passage by passage, which are usually divided for you.
5. Compare your interpretations with a good commentary. Once you feel you have understood
the main subject of the passage and what the author is saying about it, compare your interpretation
with that of a good commentary.
STEP THREE APPLICATION
Rule #1: Whenever our situation corresponds to that faced by the original readers, God's Word to us is
exactly the same as it was to them.
Rule #2: Whenever our situation does not correspond to that faced by the original readers, we should
look for the principle underlying God's Word to them. We can then apply that principle to comparable
situations today.

1. Pick a verse that speaks to you.
2. Say the reference before and after the verse.
3. Read the verse aloud many times. Record it!
4. Break the verse into natural phrases.
5. Emphasize key words when quoting the verse.
6. Write down the verse and erase a word a time.
7. Write out the verse on a flash card.
8. Carry some cards with you at all times for review.
9. Display your verses in prominent places.
10. Always memorize the verse word-perfect.
11. Put the verse to music. Write a song!
12. Get a partner so you can check each other.

Meditation is FOCUSED THINKING about a Bible verse in order to discover how I can apply its
truth to my own life.
A. WHY MEDITATE ON SCRIPTURE?
1. It is the key to becoming like Christ.

"As we...contemplate the Lord's glory, we are being transformed

B. SIX WAYS TO MEDITATE ON A VERSE
1. Picture it! Visualize the scene in your mind.
2. Pronounce it! Say the verse aloud, each time emphasizing a different word.
3. Paraphrase it! Rewrite the verse in your own words.
4. Personalize it! Replace the pronouns or people in the verse with your own name.
5. Pray it! Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God.

HOW TO HAVE A QUIET TIME
DEFINITION: "A Quiet Time is a daily time I set aside to be alone with God to get to know Him
through the Bible and prayer."
I. THE IMPORTANCE OF A DAILY QUIET TIME
Your time alone with God should be the top priority in your schedule for five reasons:
A. We were CREATED to have fellowship with God.
"So God created man in his own image... Gen. 1:27
"Look! I've been standing at the door and constantly knocking. If anyone opens the door,
I will come in and fellowship with him and he with me." Rev. 3:20
B. Jesus DIED to make a relationship to God possible.
"God...has invited you into this wonderful friendship with his Son, Christ our Lord."
I Cor. 1:9
C. Personal time alone with God was Jesus' SOURCE OF STRENGTH .

"Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
D. Every person who has been effective in SERVICE for God developed this discipline.

II. THE PURPOSE OF A DAILY QUIET TIME
A. TO GIVE DEVOTION TO GOD.
"Give to the Lord the glory due to his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his
holiness." Ps. 29:2
"(Hezekiah) was successful, because everything he did...he did in a spirit of complete
devotion to his God." 2 Ch. 31:21
• God deserves our devotion! (Rev. 4:11)

B. TO GET DIRECTION FROM GOD.
"Show me the path where I should go, O Lord; point out the right road for me to walk.

2 Things To Do In A Quiet Time
• Consider your way: "Ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be
established." Pr. 4:26
"In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your paths."
• Commit your day: "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him to help
you and he will." Ps. 37:5
C. TO GAIN DELIGHT IN GOD.
"Delight yourself in the Lord; and he will give you the desires of your heart." Ps. 37:4

FACT: The better I get to know Christ, the more I LOVE HIM .
The objective of your Quiet Time is not to study about Christ, but to actually spend time
with him!
D. TO GROW DAILY LIKE GOD.
"For as you know him better and better, God will give you, through his great power,
everything you need for living a truly good life...He has promised to save us...and to give
us his own character!" 2 Peter 1:3-4 II Corinthians 3:18
"When the council saw the boldness of Peter and John...they were amazed and realized
what being with Jesus had done for them!" Acts 4:13
HOW TO BEGIN A DAILY QUIET TIME
1. SELECT A SPECIFIC TIME
The best time to have a quiet time is when I am AT MY BEST.
Reasons for considering an early morning quiet time:
• The example of Bible characters. (Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Hannah, Job,
Hezekiah, David, Daniel, Jesus, etc.)
• It seems logical to begin the day with it. ("The best time to tune your instruments is
before you play the concert, not after!")
• It demonstrates that meeting with God is your first priority. You give Him the first part of
your day.
• You are likely to be more rested, your mind is less cluttered, and it's often the quietest
time!
Whatever time you set, BE CONSISTENT.
HOW LONG SHOULD A QUIET TIME BE?
3 Guidelines
• Start with 15 minutes and let it grow.
• Don't watch the clock!
• Emphasize quality, not quantity!
2. CHOOSE A SPECIAL PLACE
"Jesus left the city and went, as he usually did, to the Mount of Olives...to pray."
Luke 22:39
The Important Factor: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left
the house and went to a solitary place, where he prayed." Mark 1:35
3. GATHER THE RESOURCES YOU'LL NEED
A. A Bible with readable print
B. A Notebook - to write down what the Lord speaks to you about, and to keep
your prayer list.
C. A Songbook - if you want to sing!
4. BEGINNING WITH THE RIGHT ATTITUDES
• REVERENCE
"Be still and know that I am God." Ps. 46:10
• EXPECTANCY
"Open my eyes to see wonderful things in your Word." Ps. 119:19
• OBEDIENCE

5. FOLLOW A SIMPLE PLAN
"FIFTEEN MINUTES WITH GOD" (A Plan to Get Your Started)
a. RELAX. (1 minute)
Be still and be quiet! Slow down! Prepare your heart. Take a few deep breaths and wait on
God.
b. READ. (4 minutes)
See the section on "How To Read God's Word" (p. )
Begin reading where you left off the day before. Read until you feel God has told you
something. Then stop and think about it.
c. REFLECT. (4 minutes)
See section on "How To Meditate on God's Word" (p. )
You may use the S.P.A.C.E.P.E.T.S or any of the 6 methods of meditation. Think about what
the passage means to your life. Write down your thoughts. Part of reflecting is memorizing
verses that speak to you in a special way.

d. RECORD. (2 minutes)

Write out a personal application statement that is practical, possible and measurable.
"Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through the lips and the fingertips."

Conclude your Quiet Time by talking to God about what He has shown you and making your
requests from your prayer list.
II. HOW TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR QUIET TIME
A. THE PROBLEM OF DISCIPLINE
Your first problem in establishing a quiet time will face you the moment you wake up
each morning: Am I going to get out of bed? ("The Battle of the Blanket")
Suggestions
1. Go to bed ON TIME.
2. Get up IMMEDIATELY.
3. Be aware of quiet time ROBBERS.
4. Fall asleep thinking SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS.
B. THE PROBLEM OF DISTRACTIONS
Satan will try to use anything to get your mind to wander during a quiet time.
Suggestions
• Get out of BED
• Get thoroughly AWAKE
• Read and pray ALOUD
• WALK during your prayer time.
• Keep a NOTEPAD NEARBY.
C. THE PROBLEM OF DRYNESS
Sometimes you will feel like you're not getting anything out of your quiet time. ("The
Battle of the Blahs")
Never judge your quiet time by your FEELINGS.
Possible Causes of Spiritual Dryness
1. Your physical condition
2. Disobedience to God
3. Rushing your quiet time
4. Getting in a rut
5. Not sharing insights with others
D. THE PROBLEM OF DILIGENCE
Your greatest problem will be your struggle to stay consistent. I find Satan fights nothing
harder than my quiet time.
Suggestions
1. Make a covenant or vow to God.
2. Schedule it on your daily calendar.
3. Be prepared for Satan's excuses.
4. Leave your Bible open at night to the passage for the next day!
What if I miss a day?
• Don't GET ON A GUILT TRIP
• Don't GET LEGALISTIC
• Don't GIVE UP
It takes 3 weeks for you to become familiar with a new task. Then it takes another 3
weeks before it becomes a comfortable discipline.
"Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing
if we don't get discouraged and give up." Gal. 6:9
A PRAYER COMMITMENT
Father, I realize that I was created to have fellowship with you. Thank you for making this
privilege possible through Jesus's death. I know that daily fellowship with You is to be the
most important thing in my life. I now want to commit myself to spending at least some time
every day with you in a quiet time of Bible reading and prayer. I'm trusting in your strength to
help me be consistent. In Jesus's name, Amen."

HOW TO REVITALIZE YOUR PRAYER LIFE
I. APPROACH PRAYER WITH THE RIGHT ATTITUDE (Matthew 6:5-8)
• BE REAL
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and
on the street corners to be seen by men." (vs.5)
- Don't try to IMPRESS GOD
- Don't try to IMPRESS PEOPLE
• BE RELAXED
"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then
your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (vs.6)
• BE REVEALING
"Don't recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only
by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need before
you ask Him! (vs. 7-8)

THE SIX PARTS OF PRAYER
A. PRAISE: I BEGIN BY EXPRESSING MY LOVE TO GOD.
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..."
TWO KINDS OF PRAISE
• "ADORATION" - Praising God for who he is.
• "THANKSGIVING" - Praising God for what he has done
"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto
him, and bless his name." Ps. 100:4
HOW TO PRAISE GOD
1st: As you read your Bible, make a list of God's character qualities that you discover and then
review them when you pray.
Examples
God is patient Num. 14:18
God is merciful Num. 14:18
God is forgiving Num. 14:18
God knows everything 1 Sam. 2:2
God is loving 1 John 4:8
KEY: GOD'S CHARACTER is the basis for our boldness in making requests in prayer. God
answers prayers that acknowledge who he is!
2nd: Remind yourself and affirm the promises God has made that are contained in the meaning of
his names. (See Prayer Guide 2)
3rd: Make a list of all that you are thankful for and review them when you pray. (See Prayer Guide
3)
B. PURPOSE: I COMMIT MYSELF T0 GOD'S PURPOSE & WILL FOR MY LIFE
"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.."
Pray for God's will to be done...in my family...my church...my ministry...my job...my future...my
city...the nation...the world.
"Offer yourself as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the
true worship that you should offer." Rom. 12:2
C. PROVISION: I ASK GOD TO PROVIDE FOR MY NEEDS
"Give us today our daily bread..."
What needs can I pray about? EVERY ONE OF THEM
"God will supply all your needs from his riches in glory because of what Christ Jesus has done for
us." Phil 4:19
"Since God did not spare even his own Son for us but gave him up for us, won't he also surely give
us everything else?" Rom. 8:32
"You do not have...because you don't ask God!" James 4:2
KEY: BE SPECIFIC Write down your requests, with a promise you are claiming from the Bible,
and expect an answer! (See Prayer Guide 4)
"Don't worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God." Phil 4:6
D. PARDON: I ASK GOD TO FORGIVE MY SINS
"Forgive us our debts..."
4 Steps to Forgiveness
1. Ask the Holy Spirit to REVEAL every sin.
"Examine me, O God, and know my mind; test me, and discover my thoughts. Find out if
there is any evil in me..." Ps. 139:23-24
2. Confess each sin SPECIFICALLY.
"You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up;
then God will show mercy to you." Prov. 28:13
3. Make RESTITUTION to others when necessary.
"When you remember your brother has something against you...go at once to make peace
with him, then come back and offer your gift to God."
Matt. 5:23-24
4. By faith, ACCEPT God's forgiveness.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and purify us from
all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
E. PEOPLE: I PRAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE
"...as we also have forgiven our debtors."
"Pray much for others; plead for God's mercy upon them; give thanks for all he is going to do for
them." 1 Tim. 2:1
If you want to know how to pray for others...LOOK AT THE PRAYERS OF PAUL.
Eph. 1:15-19, Col. 1:3-12, I Th. 1:2-3, 2 Th. 1:11-12
Make a prayer list of people you want to pray for. You might pray for different people on different
days of the week. (See Prayer Guide #5)
F. PROTECTION: I ASK GOD FOR SPIRITUAL PROTECTION "And lead us
not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one." (vs. 13)
Believers face a spiritual battle everyday. Satan wants to defeat you through temptation and fear. By
praying for protection, you will have the confidence to face every situation during the day.
"The Spirit who is in you is more powerful than the spirit who is in those who belong to the world."

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH – BROUSSARD 7 X 7 PRAYER MINISTRY
I. SUPPLICATION
Pray daily. It is imperative that everything we do in our church be bathed in prayed. We need
to go humbly and earnestly to God in prayer. We want you to pray daily for yourself, your family,
and your church claiming God's promises. (Philippians 4:6,7)
II. SUBMISSION
Pray for submissive hearts in our church body. Submission to the Lordship of Christ and to other
believers is essential for church unity. (Ephesians 5:21)
III. SERVANTHOOD
Pray for every believer to discover their spiritual gift(s) and implement their gift(s) for the
edification of the body. (1 Cor. 12:7)
IV. STEWARDSHIP
Pray that each member of the body will faithfully manage their time, talents, testimony and tithe
for the glory of God. (1 Cor. 16:2)
V. SEEKERS
Pray that our church will reach seekers who need a relationship with the Lord.
(Acts 1:8)
VI. STAFF
Pray for the leadership of our church that they will continue to follow God's direction.
(2 Thessalonians 3:1)
VII. SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Pray for our shield of faith to quench the barrage of fiery darts that Satan is attempting to dismay and
discourage us with. (Eph. 6:12)

PRAYER GUIDE 2 - THE NAMES OF GOD
Did you know that God has several names? They are all in the Bible and each name describes a facet of
his character. You can take each of these 8 names and focus individually on what God is really like! Pray
the names of God as affirmations of praise!
8 HEBREW NAMES OF GOD - DECLARE WHO GOD IS {There are several ways the name of God is written. The original name is YHWH (called the Divine Tetragram).
Hebrew is written without vowels, and tradition is that Jewish people were afraid to try and pronounce this Name of
God in fear they would mis-pronounce it and thus profane God’s Name and break one of the Ten Commandments(
“Do not take the Lord’s Name in vain). Through the years many different usages have been tried…Jehovah,
Yahweh, Adonai, LORD, Ha Shem ( the Name) etc. Jewish people have used either Adonai or HaShem. I will use
the Tetragram for this guide.
YHWH-Shammah - "God is Present with me." (Ezekiel 48:35) You are here! I am never alone!
YHWH-Rohi - "God is my Shepherd" (Ps. 23:1) You lead me and feed me and protect me!
YHWH-Jireh - "God is my Provider" (Gen. 22:14) You see what I need before I even ask!
YHWH-Rophe - "God is my Healer" (Exodus 15:26) You can heal my body, emotions and
relationships!
YHWH-Tsidkenu - "God is my Righteousness" (Jer. 23:6) You accept me and forgive me
because of Jesus!
YHWH-M'Kaddish - "God is my Sanctification" (Lev. 20:8) You make me holy and like Jesus!
YHWH-Shalom - "God is my Peace" (Judges 6:24) You give me peace in spite of
circumstances!
YHWH-Nissi - "God is my Banner" (Ex. 17:15) You are my victory in conflict and
confrontation!
Think on the implications of these names and you'll have plenty to praise God for!

II. WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT TITHING
A. WHAT IS TITHING?
"Tithe" means "a TENTH part"
B. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "TITHE" AND AN "OFFERING"
• A "tithe" is giving 10% of my income
• An "offering" is anything I give IN ADDITION to my tithe
C. WHY SHOULD I TITHE? - 8 REASONS FROM GOD'S WORD
1. Because God COMMANDS IT. "A tenth of all you produce is the Lord's, and it is
holy. Lev. 27:10
2. Because Jesus COMMENDED IT."Yes, you should tithe, and you shouldn't leave the
more important things undone either" Matt. 23:23
3. Tithing demonstrates that God has 1ST PLACE. "The purpose of tithing is to teach
you to always put God first in your life." Deut. 14:23
4. Tithing reminds me that EVERYTHING was given to me by God! Always remember

5. Tithing expresses my GRATITUDE TO GOD. "How can I repay the Lord for all his

FRANgelism - our church's term for evangelism lovingly concentrated on…
Friends, Relatives, Associates and Neighbors.
At our church we use the word "FRAN" as the code word for the people we want to reach out
to. (This word was coined by Rev. Wayne Patton)
There are many factors that need to be considered as we attempt to reach our F.R.A.N.S.
1. We must have an unconditional love and concern for that individual even if they do not
respond to the Gospel immediately.
2. We must strengthen our relationships with them by spending time with them and helping
them any way we can.
3. We need to involve other people in our Sunday School to help in ministering to them so they
will see other concerned Christians.
4. We must find that person's need and meet them at that point with Christ's love.
5. We must be attentive listeners and really hear what they are saying.
6. We need to identify receptive periods in that person's life.
7. We must communicate the Gospel message in understandable language.
8. We must pray regularly and specifically for each "F.R.A.N." member.

Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors

Key 1 Visualize the Spirit of God hovering over your FRANS
Key 2 Make an initial Acquaintance in a non-pressure friendly manner
Key 3 Establish a Growing Relationship
· Ask God to give you help in knowing your neighbors
· Smile! Be friendly and helpful
· Be a good listener. Discover and discuss their interests
· Take the initiative to be helpful (mow grass, house watch, do painting, etc.)
Key 4 Extend an Invitation to Your Home (mealtime, picnic, ballgame)
· Have a planned evening but be spontaneous
· Don't feel obligated to be overly spiritual at this point.
A prayer of thanks at the meal would be appropriate.
· If the church has a special event coming up you may want to invite them.
Key 5 Cultivate Common Interest
· Goal - build a pool of common, shared experiences
· Start and use a FRAN personal profile
· Use the following activities as a guide:

Certainly there are items in this list which both you and your neighbor enjoy in common. It is
important to discover these contact points and use them as relational building blocks. You
probably have a number of common interests.
When you are in your neighbor's home, look for clues to his/her interests. A shop full of
woodworking tools, a well-stocked sewing room, or shelves full of home canned fruits can be
excellent conversation starters/contact points. Seasonal events such as fairs, rodeos, festivals,
cookoffs and ballgames have built-in opportunities for friendship cultivation.
Key 6 Capitalize on the Holiday Season
· Christmas, New Years, Labor Day and Thanksgiving provide great opportunities
for extending and enriching relationships within your "family farm." Why not
plan the greatest Christmas Open House on your block! Pack them in, serve some
super refreshments, sing carols together, and then let different neighbors share the
most memorable events of past Christmases."
· Be sensitive to widows, widowers, single parents, as well as others who may be

· Remember, people don't care how much (or what) you know until they know how
much you care! the hurts of others are your opportunities to become good news to
them. I believe those opportunities are often arranged by God Himself. A helping
hand and a sympathetic, listening spirit give your beliefs validity and impact.
Mowing lawns, taking over meals, babysitting, shopping, and driving are some
ways to help people in need. In relational evangelism, availability is often the
greatest ability. Be a listening, sensitive giving, caring Christian friend and look
out...it's contagious."
Key 8 Become a Giver of Books, Tapes and Videos
· Be creative in your use of Christian resources. Purchase a supply of quality items
and keep them readily available. Consider such expenditures part of your tithe
(even if you don't get a tax receipt). Remember, it was God who said that "he that
winneth souls is wise." In all of these activities, your goal is to become a servant
to your neighbor.

I. HOW TO START AND MAINTAIN A DISCIPLINED LIFE
A. STEP ONE: DESIRE
You must start with a strong desire. You must be internally motivated. External motivations
don't last. A half-hearted start will never make it to the success point.
B. STEP TWO: DECISION
Begin right now! Don't wait. Don't procrastinate. You don't slide into a new discipline.
"One of these days" never arrives. You must have a starting point. It's easier to break a bad
habit today than it will be tomorrow!
"If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done." Eccl. 11:4
C. STEP THREE: DECLARATION
Announce your intentions publicly. Make a covenant or resolution. The power of a vow is
awesome. It is particularly powerful if you put your commitment in writing.
"Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them" Ps. 76:11
D. STEP FOUR: DETERMINATION
Never allow an exception until the new discipline is rooted in your life. Each lapse will be
fatal. A single slip unwinds many turns at first. Continuity and success at the start is
essential. Never be swayed by "just this once." The act of yielding weakens the will and
reinforces your lack of self control. It takes 3 weeks to become comfortable with a new
discipline and it takes another 3 to 4 weeks (doing it daily) for it to become a part of your
life. IT TAKES 7 TO 21 REPETITIONS TO LEARN SOMETHING!
E. STEP FIVE: DO IT
Whenever you feel the slightest urge or prompting to practice these new discipline - DO IT
THEN! Don't wait. Seize every opportunity to reinforce your discipline. Those feelings will
not last, so whenever you feel inclined to perform your habit, do so!
F. STEP SIX: DOUBLE UP
Get a partner who will support you and encourage you. Find someone who is wiling to hold
you accountable and check up on you especially in the early days before the discipline is
firmly rooted in your life.
"Let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over each other, studying
how we may stir up and stimulate each other to...helpful deeds and noble activities." Heb.
10:25
"Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of
them falls down, the other can help him up." Eccl. 4:9-10
G. STEP SEVEN: DEPEND ON GOD
Rely on God's power to help you establish the discipline. Remember, Satan does not want
you to develop disciplines that help you grow spiritually and make you like Christ so he will
do all he can to tempt you, cause you to slip, or discourage you. Pray!
"For the Spirit God has given us...fills us with power, love and self-control." 2 Tim. 1:7
"For it is God who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve his
purpose." Phil. 2:13

Eight Reasons Why
You Should Consider
SMALL GROUPS at
First Baptist Church
1. You will understand the Bible better in a
small group.
If you've ever listened to a Bible teacher or
preacher and wanted to stop that person and say, "But what about...? or I don't
understand!" then a small group is for you!
Preaching and teaching is one-way communication - you listen while the speaker
speaks. It's fine for imparting knowledge but
not as effective for personal application as a small group. In a small group setting, you
can ask questions, participate in a discussion
of the text, and hear others share insights and illustrations of the truth you are trying to
grasp. The Bible must be applied to your
own personal situations and that happens best in small groups.
2. You will begin to really feel like part of
God's family.
Most people who have been a part of a group
say the greatest benefit is the close
relationships and friendships that develop. They will frequently telephone each other
during the week to share an urgent prayer
request or an exciting answer. You'll discover that your need and problems are not
unique-we're all in the same boat. It helps to
know that others are facing the same difficulties, or have lived through them and
learned spiritual principles in the process.
Over fifty times in the New Testament the
phrase "one another" is used to describe our
relationship to other believers. We are instructed to love one another, encourage one
another, pray for one another, accept one
another, bear one another's burdens, and build-up one another. The only way you can
obey these commands is in a small group! We really do need each other and God never
meant for you to go it alone in the Christian
life. The answer to your problem is to join in a group.
3. Prayer will become more meaningful to you.
Many people are hesitant to pray in front of others, especially in a large church. In a
small group of 6 to 12, you will learn to
participate in prayer by having a conversation together with God. No one is
pressured to pray, but as you become
comfortable, you'll be able to pray sentence
prayers and join in. There are many promises in the Bible related to group prayer. In
praying together with a few others, we are
drawn together and we find answers to the needs in our lives.
4. You will be able to handle stress and pressure better.
Small groups provide excellent support in times of crisis, change, and stress. You'll
have a sense of stability and security
knowing there are people who really care for you and are committed to standing with you.
When someone loses a job, or a family member has an extended illness or a mother
needs a baby-sitter -- these are practical
needs that will be naturally taken care of through your small group. Your group will
coordinate the sharing of hot meals to be
brought in when your family is in need. Many people in group our could testify that
they would not have made it through a
difficult time if it hadn't been for the support of their group. We are currently establishing
a number of special support groups that deal
with problems like alcoholism, financial difficulty, abuse, and other needs.
5. You will have a natural way to share Christ with unbelieving friends, relatives,
and work associates.
It may be that some of your friends who don't
know the Lord wouldn't be caught dead in a
church. They have a preconceived idea and just the thought makes them defensive. But
those same people may be open to an
invitation to a casual Bible discussion in a home or office setting. In a small group, your
unbelieving friend can ask questions and
express honest doubts without feeling "put on the spot." When your friend sees the love
and warmth and honesty of your group, it
will make him more receptive to the Good News.
6. You will develop leadership skills you
never knew you had!.
The Bible teaches that every believer is given
certain talents or "gifts" to benefit others in
the family of God. Unfortunately most Christians remain as Sunday morning
spectators all their lives because large group
meetings are primarily "sit and listen" situations. As you share and participate in a
relaxed small group setting, you'll discover
your confidence and self-esteem rising. This will help you at work, at church, and in every
other relationship.
7. You will deepen your understanding of
worship.
Many believers mistakenly believe that
worship can only happen on Sunday morning in a large group with a sermon, a choir, and
an offering plate! Worship happens anytime
we focus on God. Sometimes that happens best in a small group in praying or singing
together.
8. You will be a New Testament Christian!
The book of Acts is very clear about how God
intends for his people to grow and have their
needs met in the church. We will never be able to hire enough professional pastors to
meet all the individual needs in our family.
God never intended for it to be that way! Consider these verses:
"They devoted themselves to the apostle's teaching and to the fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer. All the
believers were together and had everything in common. Everyday they continued to
meet together...they broke bread in their
homes and ate together...and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being
saved." Acts 2:42,44, 46-47.
"Day after day, in the temple courts and from
house to house they never stopped teaching
and proclaiming the Good News that Jesus is the Christ."Act. 5:42
"Greet also the church that meets at their house." Romans 16:5
"Aquilla & Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at
their house." 1Cor.16:19

Seven Phases of God’s Pattern for Revival
II Chronicles 7:14, “and My people who are called by My name humble
themselves, pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear
from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”
God is on mission to redeem a lost world. He calls a people into a relationship with
Himself, and He accomplishes His work through them.
1. God’s people tend to depart from Him turning to substitutes for His presence,
His purposes, and His ways.
2. God disciplines His people because of His love.
3. God’s people cry out to Him for help.
4. God calls His people to repent and return to Him or perish.
5. God revives His repentant people by restoring them to a right love relationship
with Himself.
6. God exalts His Son Jesus in His people and draws the lost to saving faith in
Him.
