This programme aims to create an environment to explore, test, engage, inspire and provide an avenue which may increase the uptake of science, technology,

engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) subjects. Kildare Library Service are conscious that STEAM subjects are at the heart of a very wide variety of

professions, and will be the skills future generations will need to take part in building the world of our future. These events have been organised by Kildare

Library Service with the support of other organisations such as SEAI, North Kildare Beekeepers Association, IPCC & the NRDO.

By encouraging parents and teachers to bring children to visit the library it raises the awareness of what the modern public library service has to offer them. The library is seen as a fun and welcoming place to visit where young people can avail of the opportunity to try new things and get involved in their

local community.

These demonstations & workshops are free of charge and can be booked by contacting your local library. Most of these events are during school hours and can be booked by schools. There are also open events available which can be booked by parents outside of school hours. To be informed of these & other events at your local library join the mailing list at www.kildare.ie/library or if you would like to hear about school events specifi cally please contact your

local branch and ask to join the school mailing list.

Science & Engineering Talk Paul MacDonald is a Roads Engineer/Training Offi cer with the National Roads Offi ce. He is a Member of the Council and Executive of Engineers Ireland, writes for the Engineers Journal and regularly speaks about Science, Engineering and Technology in schools and colleges around Ireland. Paul has travelled to Asia, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to research the latest sustainable technology and engineering projects being developed by engineers.Join Paul as he discusses - how we use energy in our daily lives, the use of energy and its impact on our climate and look at Masdar City - the sustainable energy city as a solution for energy use.

Knex Workshops The KNEX Challenge is an exciting introduction to the world of Engineering. The KNEX Challenge model kits will allow students to design and build an engineering model of a real life boat, rocket, wind turbine or car - all of which have a use in our everyday lives. The students will need to think about the engineering features needed for their engineering model so students making a KNEX lifeboat will need to shape the model boat so that it glides through rough waves and will need to include the motor engine to power the boat. The KNEX Challenge will challenge students to think about why engineers design and build things the way they do to assist us in our day to day lives’.These workshops will be hands on and all students will participate in teams.

The overall course objective is to impart theoretical and applied knowledge in the fi elds of Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Math (STEM) by using LEGO® technic parts and other exciting tools. The main goal of the workshop is to illustrate content through stories. Our students will learn math and physical principles through intuitive study also develop their independent learning and improve their building skills. The course will provide mathematical integration between physical laws and the simple calculations to support them. The laws and mathematics are both illustrated through the construction of exciting LEGO® bricks models. Once the concepts have been demonstrated students enjoy hands on building the YE LEGO® models which provides experiential learning and reinforces the lessons topic..

Tech Week

Join Tech Create for some exciting taster workshops to introduce children to the potential and possibilities of technology. This session will involve our instructor introducing the concept of STEAM and then demonstrating some key elements to the children. This is done in a fun way with the audience participation. Workshops will include: • a 3D scan of a few volunteers which is then modeled in software and demonstrated.• We bring along our 3D printer so children can witness a 3D print being created.• Video clip of our laser in operation at our facility and samples of what can be made passed around the class.• Demo of our Ozobot coding robots

WhizzKids Workshops are the ideal way to introduce your child to the wonderful world of technology. With a laptop provided for every participant, children will be encouraged to experiment, share ideas and explore new concepts while they create their own projects.

Workshops will cover Scratch programming teaching children how to create their own screensavers, animations and video games. While children love creating their own games, the beauty of this workshop is that they also learn about how computer games work and what is going on in the background when they are playing.Older children will also get an opportunity to create 3D Digital designs. The projects in this workshop will teach children how to create their dream house or castle, but the software can be used to create any 3D object such as a car, a toy etc

Circus Play is an educational activity with a focus on play.

Circus Play aims to inspire the imagination of children through the demonstration of the skills of the circus in an entertaining way and gives those children the space to try out those skills through supervised play together. It is a fun physical and mental activity that is challenging and rewarding.

The children will watch short performances of Juggling, Balance, Magic, and a Flea Circus.

Under the expert supervision of the performers they are then taken through basic steps of juggling with scarves, juggling together with giant balls, balancing feathers, helping and cooperating with each other in games. They will challenge themselves by balancing on stilts, tight wire and rola bola. They will be fi lled with self esteem and confi dence when they succeed at things that look diffi cult and challenging.

S.T.E.A.M. topics such as Balance, Gravity, Spin, and Symmetry are introduced and explained during the event and the Irish language is seamlessly woven in and encouraged. The emphasis is on fun and play and through this learning and cooperation achievement and reward are realised.
