Birch Bark CanoeThe birch bark canoe was the main mode of
transporting goods vast distances via waterways. Created by the
aboriginals that inhabited the lands, the birch bark canoes were
later used by the voyageurs, or coureur des bois.
The voyageurs, fur traders of European descent traded European
goods with aboriginals for beaver and other animal pelts.
theA pow-wow (also powwow or pow wow or pau wau) is a gathering
of North Americas Native people. The word derives from the
Narragansett word powwaw, meaning spiritual leader.
A modern pow-wow is a specific type of event where both Native
American and non-Native American people meet to dance, sing,
socialize, and honour Aboriginal culture. Pow-wows vary in length
from one day sessions of five to six hours to three days. Major
pow-wows or pow-wows called for a special occasion can be up to one
week long.
There is no shortness of First Nations culture to experience in
the Rainy River District. Take a trip out to the
Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Cen-tre, where you will learn more
about First Nation culture and tradition. If you have the chance
check out a local pow-wow.

an unimaginable encounter with wild
black bears. Be witness to wildlife like youve
never seen it. Want to go further than just taking in the
scene, hand feed the bears. Go on...this ones a real
conversation starter!

the emo waterfront, its packed with plenty to do; a playground,
waterpark, barbecue grill tops and a covered picnic area. in the
evening, stop and check out the saturday stock car races, its sure
to get your adrenaline pumping.

memorial dedicated to our aboriginal veterans.

on your right after the turn off onto Hwy. 71 there is the rainy
river First Nations Pow Wow Grounds. stop by June 20-22 for the
annual pow wow, or call 807.482.2479 for other events held

Great spot to stop and cool off with a dip in the
refreshing water. Watch for signs.
take a walk and visit the falls, sit peacefully and relax. You
may even catch sight of a flock of pelicans.
Located on the shores of Lake of the Woods, this park offers
plenty for the lake lover, enjoy a day boating, swimming or
canoeing.
Check out the view from the bridge.
Your fishing headquarters with 4,600 square feet on the shores
of Lake of the Woods, this centre is home to fishing exhibits and
interactive displays. Check out the website for information on
seminars and workshops with fishing pros.

one for the day, explore Lake of the Woods via canoe...theres no
better way.
With a playground for kids, covered picnic area and sandy beach,
Bass Lake Park has more than enough to fill an afternoon with fun.

The skies were clear and the trees be-ginning to bloom. Traffic
seemed to be heading towards Rainy Lake, lugging boats to cabins
and rods to water. We opted for a day trip through North-western
Ontario starting in Fort Frances and ending in Sioux Narrows. With
our map sprawled across the dashboard, our 139km journey was
underway.As we pulled onto the highway, it became clear that the
biggest challenge wed face would be turning back for home. It
seemed as though we had only been driving for a few minutes when we
rolled into Emo.For a town of 1,200 people, the amenities and
activities were countless.We parked the car and made our way to
Lions Park on the Rainy River waterfront. Children were running
through the spray park, their families feasting on burgers in the
sun.After stretching for a while, we hopped back into our car and
continued heading west. We had our final destination in mind, but
we were excited for the journey. We veered right to view the
Norlund Chapel off Hwy 11/71. The building didnt stand tall in
comparison to the ancient trees around it, but the piles of visitor
logs within the chapel did. Tourists from around the world
scribbled their name in guest books, leaving testa-ments to its
history behind. Each of the photos displayed resembled ours, as the
building has been maintained since its inception in 1973. The 8x10
chapel was a photo opportunity we couldnt pass by. We were en route
to our next destination, when we decided to slow down our jour-ney
to experience some local culture. The Rainy River First Nations
Pow-Wow Grounds, built in 2010, served as a won-derful testament to
the aboriginal culture in the area. Despite the fact that there
wasnt a pow wow going on, the architec-ture was stunning and we
felt inspired to venture back in June, for their annual Pow-Wow.We
welcomed the sun when we stopped and dipped our toes in Caliper
Lake. Shaded by the mature red and white
pines, the provin-cial park is a great place to picnic on a hot
summer day.Next stop, Nestor Falls. Bird watchers from all over the
world stop to marvel at the wildlife soaring through the sky and
gliding over water. The falls came down heavy and frothing at the
bottom a true provincial treasure.We marvelled over the peli-cans,
listened to the soothing sounds of the falls and mingled with
others making their way through the landmark. We were hesitant to
leave, but hunger called. We stopped at Moniques Log Cabin, a
favourite local restaurant. We relaxed with a delicious log burger
on the patio, while visiting with tourists from Minnesota, Moniques
is an annual stop for them. After lunch, we turned off to take in a
bit of Bass Lake Park a scenic park with a sloping sand beach, we
could hear the cheers of a baseball game in the dis-tance, while we
searched the beach for hidden treasures. We noticed signs for
hiking trails, with one more place to visit before we turned
around, we figured we might as well stop. After reviewing our three
options, we opted for the shortest of the three, Red Pine Trail.
The paths were clearly marked, which made it easy to navigate our
way through the trails. We loaded into the car once more bound for
Sioux Narrowsone of Canadas best kept secrets. Countless canoes
made their way over Lake of the Woods, one of the worlds largest
inland freshwater lakes. The township sits along part of the lakes
65,000 mile shoreline and provides a great fishing destination. A
round of golf, sightseeing and a trip to the fishing centre
consumed the remainder of our afternoon. Before we knew it, it was
time to leave behind human history and geographical gems to retrace
our path back home.

Packed with fun outdoor exercise equipment this is a great way
to take that boring workout to a whole new level. interested? turn
North on Hill road immediately after the train tracks.
With over 2 miles of cobblestone walkway, built against the
banks of rainy river, La Verendrye Parkway makes for a remarkable
walking path along the waterfront, directly across from the u.s.
Along this path stop and explore the Hallet. Now a heritage site,
the Hallet was the largest, most powerful tug boat used on rainy
Lake. While on the wa-terfront, take the time to climb the 100 foot
lookout tower and take in the spectacular views of rainy Lake and
Fort Frances.

destination for a day or more! take a plunge in refreshing rainy
Lake, or picnic under the big trees at seven oaksa scenic portion
of the park. relax on the sandy beaches and catch some rays. Kids
will also enjoy vari-ous playground equipment next to the beach
area. Camping your style? Park facilities can accom-modate tents,
trailers, and rVs for a day, a week, or more!
With an abundance of secluded beaches, an oasis is never far
away on rainy Lake. stay alerttheres plenty to see on our lakes.
Visit Mer-maid Copenhagen island. Legend says an artist built the
mermaid to honour his wife who drowned at this spot in the 1920s.
Her ritual was to swim out daily from the cot-tage southwest of the
rock and sun bathe in the mid-afternoon sun.reeling in the big one
can spark memories that will last a lifetime.
our freshwater lakes make the perfect spot to fish your
favourite catch, be it big walleye, bass, muskie or trout. this
area is on the map as a top spot for the sportsman.
Want to enjoy a leisurely evening ride aboard a sailboat? the
rendez-vous Yacht Club invites you to climb aboard and experience
sailing at its best! Members offer free sailboat rides. For a

the district also boasts numerous fishing tournaments, be a
spectator or join in the fun with four months of hot angling
action. in May, the annual emo Walleye Classic kicks off the
season. this two-day catch and release tournament held in emo, ont.
has plenty of excitement for the whole family. in July, catch two
great tournaments. the annual Castin for Cash Bass tournament is
held on the Lake despair chain of lakes the first weekend in
July.
stick around for the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship
held the last weekend in July, this tourna-ment attracts anglers
from all over North America. the popular catch-and-release
tournament features activities and events for the whole family. in
August, dont miss the Morson Bass international Catch and release
Fishing tounament, where the air comes alive with the sounds of
excitement. Held the 4th weekend of August on Lake of the Woods,
ontario, Canada. the sioux Narrows Bassin for Bucks fishing
tournament, held early in septem-ber, has plenty for everyone.
Later that month, take in the annual Nestor Falls Crow Lake Classic
Bass tournament. Finish the season with the rainy river Walleye
tourna-ment.
the rainy river Valley Agricultural fall fair, held in emo in
mid-August, is a must for family entertainment. the fair is a
weekend-long adven-
ture, featuring a midway, livestock shows, parade, fair queen
competi-tion, as well as mini-king and mini-queen competitions, a
logger com-petition, and local produce/creative exhibitions. end a
satisfying day at the fall fair with the stock car races. sit back
and cheer on your favourite driver race around the track.
the Borderland racing Association opens the season in May. every
saturday night during the summer, the emo speedway is abuzz with
excitement. Hot laps begin at 7 pm and the races at 7:30. Grab a
snack at the concession stand, find your perfect seat in the
covered grand-stand, and get ready!
Hunt sunset Country. With miles of wilderness and an abundance
of wild game, the rainy river district is a prime destination for

Lions Park
Lions Park on sec-ond st. e., home to a variety of fun
play-ground equipment, including a tunnel, slides, swings, and
monkey bars. A pic-nic shelter, handicap swing and water fountain
are also on the premises.
Mcirvine Park
A quiet park, on Col-onization rd. W., has swings, playground
equipment, and lots of green space for frisbee or catch.
Legion Park
The Legion Park off Kings Hwy., framed with oak and Poplar
trees, includes slides, monkey bars, swings, as well as a covered
picnic area and wash-rooms which can be found near the
play-ground.

licence, combined with a Birth or Baptismal Certi cate is
acceptable. Children travelling with someone other than their legal
guardian should have written permission.
Visitors to Canada may bring in certain goods for their own use
in Canada as personal baggage as duty and tax free goods, provided
all such items are
reported at Customs on arrival and are not subject to
restrictions.
There are age requirements and quantity restrictions when
importing Alcohol or Tobacco Products. Personal baggage may include
up to 1.14 Litres (40 imperial ounces) of alcoholic beverages
(liquor, liqueur, wine) or 24 x 355 ml (12 ounces) cans or bottles
of beer or ale or 1.5 Litres of wine.
Tobacco Products may include 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, and 200
mg
tobacco and 200 tobacco sticks, duty and tax free. In instances
where the visit is for a shorter duration, i.e., less than 48
hours, quantities may be limited to amounts which are appropriate
to the nature, purpose and duration of the visit.
The importation of alcoholic beverages is limited to persons who
have attained the legal age as prescribed by the province at point
of entry. The minimum ages are as follows: Newfoundland,
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario,
Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon is
19, Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta is 18.
Tobacco products may only be imported by persons who are the age
of 18 or over in Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, NWT and
the Yukon. These persons must be 19 or over in Ontario, and all
other provinces.
Arriving in CanadaFood: A reasonable supply of food, consistent
with the length of stay and number of people in the party,
providing it is for personal use is allowed duty and tax free
entry. Some imported goods may require Canada Food Inspection
Agency approval to import. Please contact the CBSA of ce at (807)
274-3655 for information.
Pets: Dogs and cats from the USA must be accompanied by a
valid
RABIES certi cate, signed and dated by a veterinarian
indicating that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies,
within the last three years. The certi cate must provide suf cient
description and detail to enable adequate identi cation. While pups
and kittens under the age of three months do not require a rabies
vaccination certi cate to enter Canada, they must be in good health
at the time of entry. Pet food is not allowed.
Fire Arms: Long guns, such as ri es and shotguns, imported
temporarily for sporting or competition use in Canada:
or in transit through Canada MUST BE REGISTERED at Canada
Customs. 200 rounds of ammunition are allowed entry, duty and tax
free.
Hand guns or other restricted and prohibited weapons (i.e. mace
or pepper spray) are NOT allowed entry into Canada. Also, no
reworks.
Gasoline: The gasoline carried in the tanks of your vehicles is
allowed. Small boats with outboard motors are permitted to carry 2
cruise-a-day tanks.
Any gas over this amount is subject to duty and tax.
Bait: Live minnows ARE NOT allowed. Frozen or salted minnows ARE
allowed. Live earthworms are permitted, but only if they are packed
in an arti cial bedding. Worms packed in earth soil ARE NOT allowed
entry. LEECHES are PROHIBITED. WAX WORMS are PROHIBITED.

weekend in July, is a popular catch and release tournament which
attracts anglers from all over North America and features
