Tijden veranderen, mensen ver-anderen. Toch blijven veel musea hetzelfde. Een plek waar kunst vaak maar voor één uitleg vatbaar is: de kunsthistorische uitleg. Meta Knol wil dat veranderen: ‘Je ziet op allerlei terreinen dat mensen mondiger worden en anders met informatie omgaan. Mensen organiseren zichzelf via internet en creëren naar het Wikipediamodel informatie met elkaar. Dat past ook bij het museum van deze tijd. Veel musea zijn nog een soort meneer die tegen je spreekt, maar niet met je spreekt. Ik wil weten wat bezoe-kers vinden. Ik wil de interactie met het publiek in De Lakenhal handen en voeten geven.’

Hoewel Knol pas enkele maanden als directeur van het museum actief is, maakte ze een vliegende start. Bij haar aantreden is ze naar eigen zeggen in een rijdende trein gesprongen: ‘Er liep al een traject met de gemeente voor investerin-gen in De Lakenhal. Daar ben ik meteen mee aan de slag gegaan. This is something Meta Knol wants to change: ‘People are becoming increasingly self-assured and have a different attitude to handling information. These days, they can use the internet to get themselves organised, and Wikipedia means they are able to share information with one another. That approach is equally relevant for museums today. The way many traditional museums are still run is like a man who talks at you but not with you. For me, it’s important to know what our visitors think. My aim is to make our interaction with the public into something tangible.’

Werk in UitvoeringDe renovatie van De Lakenhal staat gepland voor 2013 – 2014. Het museum zal tijdens de werkzaam-heden open blijven. Wie denkt dat er tot die tijd niets te beleven valt, heeft het mis. Knol: ‘2010 staat in het teken van het project Werk in Uitvoering. De Lakenhal heeft zo’n 25.000 werken in depot. Die gaan we in hoog tempo aan het publiek tonen. Daarbij mogen bezoekers zelf ook hun schatten komen laten zien. Veel mensen verzamelen wel

Ideeënmachine Het meest bijzondere van Leiden vindt Meta het historische karakter van de stad: ‘Er zijn ruim 2700 monumenten op een paar vierkante kilometer. Overal is de geschiede-nis voelbaar, maar Leiden is ook een stad waar nieuwe dingen gebeuren. Er is veel ruimte is voor jonge initiatieven. We hebben het Leids Film Festival, de Meelfa-briek, Stadslab Leiden, het Leids Cabaretfestival. Onze dependance Scheltema is de ideeënmachine van De Lakenhal. Daar kun je overigens ook heerlijk eten. Daarna heb je de voorstellingen op loopaf-stand voor het uitzoeken. Ondanks het rijke kunst- en cultuuraanbod kan Meta zonder aarzelen haar favoriete plek in Leiden noemen: ‘De Lakenhal natuurlijk.’

The Lakenhal has about 25,000 works in its depot that we intend to exhibit to the public. Members of the public will also be able to show us their treasures. Lots of people are collectors - just like museums. We’re inviting visitors to have their portrait made in the museum, with their most prized possession. Then we’ll hang the photos in the museum. This kind of interaction with the public works really well.

Ideas incubator For Meta, the most unique aspect of Leiden is its history: ‘The city has more than 2,700 historic monuments, all within a few square kilometres. You can feel the history everywhere in the city, but there are new things going on, too. There are plenty of

opportunities for young initiatives. We have the Leiden Film Festival, the Flour Factory, Stadslab Leiden and the Leiden Cabaret Festival. Our Scheltema annex is the Lakenhal’s ideas incubator. It’s also a great place to eat, by the way. And then you have the many theatrical and musical performances all within walking distance. In spite of Leiden’s rich variety of art and cultural activities, for Meta there can only be one favourite: ‘The Lakenhal, of course.’

Toen Meta Knol in augustus 2009 directeur van Museum De Lakenhal werd, dacht ze Leiden aardig te kennen. Eenmaal in functie ontdekte ze dat haar nieuwe standplaats veel meer te bieden heeft dan ze voor mogelijk hield: ‘Leiden is zo’n leuke en bijzondere stad. Geschiedenis, kunst en wetenschap; het ligt hier allemaal voor het oprapen.’

The image of Leiden as a city is largely dominated by the univer-sity. Almost all the major museums and a number of the city’s historic monuments are in some way or other related to the university. But there is a lot more to Leiden. ‘It is one of the most interesting cities in the Netherlands to visit. There are a lot of hidden places here many people have no idea about.’

Tourists who come to Leiden for the first time are surprised by what the city has to offer and by its many attractions. This is some-thing Mayor Lenferink can well understand. ‘Of course, we have the well-known museums, but we

also have almost 3000 historic monuments. And then there are Leiden’s picturesque canals, the stylish shops, the almshouses with their hidden havens of peace... And if you dig just a bit deeper, there is a lot more to discover in Leiden.’

A week in LeidenLeiden may seem a typical city for day-trippers, but Lenferink is convinced a day is just too short. What would his favourite ‘week in Leiden’ be like? ‘I’d start with a walking tour with one of Leiden’s experienced city guides. There are

several different tours to choose from, each with a different theme. That way you can get to see all the main city attractions. I’d probably spend every afternoon

in a different museum. Apart from the major museums, there are also several smaller ones that

are well worth visiting. Leiden’s almshouses are also very special; I definitely wouldn’t want to miss them. I’d have lunch on one of the many terraces and visit the Citadel and the Rapenburg. I’d also hire a bicycle at the station and explore the outlying area by bike, probably

taking in Wassenaar, Katwijk or Warmond. There’s plenty to see in and around Leiden.’

Romantic spotIn recent years the municipality has devoted a lot of attention to tidying up and renovating the city centre. That’s something that will stay on the agenda for some time. ‘The shopping area and public areas in particular have under-gone some major improvements. One area where the results of our efforts can already been seen is around the Hooglandse Church. The streets around the church are now pedestrian-only areas and the lovely square with its avenue of trees could easily pass for a jeu de boules pitch somewhere in France. It’s absolutely charming.’ When asked about his favourite places in Leiden, he mentions the less well-known spots in particular: ‘The Thysiana library, the only 17th-cen-tury library in the Netherlands still preserved in its original premises. Make an appointment to visit it, and you won’t be disappointed; it’s a real jewel of a library. The small American Pilgrims’ museum is also very special. But for me the most romantic place is the Citadel. From the ramparts you have a good view of Leiden’s three main churches.’

Toeristen die voor het eerst in Leiden komen, zijn verrast door de vele mogelijkheden en bezienswaardigheden. Burge-meester Lenferink begrijpt dat goed. ‘Natuurlijk hebben we hier de bekende musea. Maar er zijn bijvoorbeeld ook zo’n drieduizend monumenten te zien. En dan zijn er nog de gezellige grachten, de vele winkels, de stilteplekjes, de hofjes… Als je een laag dieper gaat, is er nog heel veel meer te ontdekken in Leiden.’

Weekje LeidenLeiden lijkt een typische stad voor dagjesmensen, maar volgens Len-ferink heb je aan een dag niet ge-noeg. Hoe ziet zijn eigen favoriete ‘weekje Leiden’ eruit? ‘Ik zou om te beginnen een stadswandeling gaan maken met een gids. Er zijn diverse wandelingen mogelijk, met allerlei thema’s. Op die manier doe je de highlights van de stad aan. Vervolgens zou ik elke middag

naar een museum gaan. Behalve de grote musea, kent Leiden ook diverse kleinere musea die het bezoeken waard zijn. Ik vind de hofjes van Leiden heel bijzonder, die zou ik zeker willen zien. En na-tuurlijk eten op een terrasje en de Burcht en het Rapenburg bezoe-ken. Ik zou een fiets huren op het station en de omgeving verkennen. Wassenaar, Katwijk, Warmond; in de nabijheid van Leiden is er ook genoeg te zien.’

Romantische plekDe gemeente heeft de laatste jaren veel aandacht besteed aan het opknappen en renoveren van de binnenstad. Dat blijft de komende periode op de agenda staan. ‘Vooral het winkelgebied en de openbare ruimte krijgen volop aandacht. Dat is nu al te zien bij bijvoorbeeld de Hooglandse Kerk.

De omgeving daar is autovrij gemaakt en het middenstuk zou zo kunnen doorgaan voor een Frans jeu de bou-

les-plein. Echt prachtig.’ Gevraagd naar zijn eigen favoriete plekken in Leiden, noemt hij vooral de minder bekende locaties. ‘De Bibliotheca Thysiana, de enige bibliotheek in Nederland uit de zeventiende eeuw die in zijn oorspronkelijke behuizing bewaard is gebleven. Op afspraak te bezoeken. Echt een pareltje! Of het kleine American Pilgrim Museum, ook heel bijzon-der. De meest romantische plek is voor mij de Burcht. Bovendien kun je van daaruit de drie belangrijke kerken van Leiden zien.’

Bijna alle grote musea en diverse monumenten hebben een relatie met de

universiteit. Maar er is nog veel meer in Leiden. ‘Het is een van de meest

interessante Nederlandse steden om te bezoeken’, vindt burgemeester Henri

Lenferink. ‘Er zijn bijzondere geheimen die nog lang niet iedereen kent.’

Eén kenmerk van Leiden valt direct op, waar je ook bent: het water. Leiden heeft na Amsterdam het meeste water binnen haar poorten stromen. Door de ligging aan de rand van het Hollandse Plassengebied voeren verschillende doorvaarroutes voor plezier- en toervaart door Leiden en de omge-ving. Over de Oude Rijn en de Vliet

Leiden wordt ook wel Stad van Ontdekkingen genoemd. Deze historische stad zal u met haar charme, haar klasse, haar gezelligheid en haar verborgen schatten bekoren. Leiden is verrassend verrijkend, prikkelt uw nieuwsgierigheid en nodigt u uit een kijkje te nemen in haar roemrijke verleden, te genieten van haar waardevolle heden en uit te kijken naar haar veelbelovende toekomst.

Leidens OntzetVanaf de zestiende eeuw keerde het economisch tij. Het was de tijd van de Hervorming en protestantse stromingen werden fel vervolgd. Leiden sloot zich in 1572 aan bij de Nederlandse opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing en werd door de Spanjaarden belegerd. De inwoners vielen ten prooi aan ziekte en honger en bijna was Leiden in handen gevallen van

de Spanjaarden, maar op 3 oktober 1574 vluchtten de Spaanse troepen en trokken de troepen van Willem van Oranje Leiden binnen. Zij deelden voedsel uit: een half brood met kaas en haring voor iedere inwoner. Deze bevrijding, Leidens Ontzet, wordt tot op de dag van vandaag gevierd met een gigantisch volksfeest. Als dank voor het heldhaftige verzet dat de stad tijdens het beleg

bood, stichtte Willem van Oranje op 8 februari 1575 de Universiteit Leiden.

De Leidse sleutelsLeiden is de Sleutelstad. Overal in de stad

duiken de sleutels weer op. Dat is al zo sinds 1293, toen op de officiële

documenten van de ‘stadt Leyde’ steeds vaker een stadszegel sierde

met Petrus daarop. In zijn hand draagt de apostel een sleutel. De combinatie tussen Petrus en

een sleutel is een bekende.

Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt van Rijn werd op 15 juli 1606 geboren in de Weddesteeg in Leiden en woonde er de eerste 26 jaar van zijn leven. Dat waren belangrijke jaren. Hij leerde op de Latijnse school de klassieken en besloot vervolgens schilder te worden. Eenmaal volleerd vestigde hij zich in Leiden als zelfstandig schilder. In zijn Leidse atelier is menig meesterwerk ontstaan. In Museum De Lakenhal hangt een schilderij uit de Leidse periode van de schilder.

The citizens fell prey to disease and hunger, and Leiden almost fell into the hands of the Spanish, but on 3 October 1574 the Spanish invaders fled and the troops of the Prince of Orange entered the city. They distributed food to the starving citizens: half a loaf of bread with cheese and herring for every person. This liberation, the Relief of Leiden, is still celebrated every year, right up to the present day, with a gigantic local party. As a reward for the city’s resistance during the Spanish occupation, William of Orange founded Leiden University on 8 February 1575.

Leiden’s history stretches back a long way; long before our calendar started, people had settled on the banks of the Rhine. By 1200 the settlement had grown to such a size that the Count of Holland gave the people city rights, heralding the birth of the city of Leiden. At the end of the fifteenth century, Leiden was the biggest city in the county of Holland, mainly due to the international cloth industry for which the city was famous. The prosperity enjoyed by Leiden in this period is reflected in such imposing buildings as the Hooglandse Kerk and the Pieterskerk.

1293 when a city seal depicting Saint Peter featured on official documents of the ‘stadt Leyde’. In his hand the apostle carries a key. The combination of Saint Peter and a key is a well-known symbol taken from the Bible (Matthew, 16, v. 19), when Jesus says to Peter: ‘I will give you the keys to the City of Heaven.’ As early as 1121 the Counts of Holland had a chapel built, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. This is the present Pieterskerk.

Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt van Rijn was born on 15 July 1606 in the Weddesteeg in Leiden, where he lived for the first 26 years of his life. These were important years for him. He studied classics at the Latin school, then decided to become a painter. Having trained under Jacob Isaacsz Swanenburg, Rembrandt set himself up in Leiden as an independent artist. Many of his masterpieces were painted in his Leiden studio. A painting from his Leiden period can be seen in Museum De Lakenhal.

De BurchtHet hart van Leiden wordt ge-vormd door de Burcht. De Burcht van Leiden is één van de oudste nog bestaande voorbeelden van een mottekasteel in Nederland. Het is een kunstmatig opgeworpen heuvel (motte) met (aanvankelijk) een houten burcht. In 1203 is hier gevochten om het graafschap van Holland. De Burcht is vrij toegankelijk en als u de steile trap heeft weten te bedwingen wacht een prachtig uitzicht over Leiden als beloning.

Het GravensteenAls gebouwen konden spreken, zou het Gravensteen de geschiedenis van Leiden vanaf het begin van de dertiende eeuw kunnen vertel-len. Het was een versterkte toren die hoorde bij de grafelijke hoeve ter plekke, maar het was ook een gevangenis, een tuchthuis, een boekenopslag en een universiteits-gebouw. Omdat het gebouw in de vroege middeleeuwen uit steen werd opgetrokken – in die tijd vrij ongebruikelijk – noemden de om-wonenden het Het Gravensteen. In de vijftiende eeuw werd het de offi-ciële stadsgevangenis. Gevangenen werden hardhandig aangepakt: de martelkamer stond bekend als één van de meest effectieve in de wijde omtrek. De laatste doodstraf werd in 1853 voltrokken. Nu doet het pand dienst als universiteitsgebouw.

Hooglandse KerkVlakbij de Burcht staat de Hooglandse Kerk, een imposante laatgotische kruisbasiliek in het hart van Leiden. De Hooglandse Kerk is zonder twijfel één van de mooiste en meest imponerende kerken van Leiden. Opvallend is het lijnenspel van de gotiek en de enorme ramen geven een uitbundig overweldigend licht in de grote ruimte. De kerk wordt geroemd om zijn elegantie. Het vensteroppervlak is het grootste in Nederland. Het brede dwarsschip is met zijn 65,70 meter het breedste gotische dwarsschip ter wereld en geeft een beeld van de geplande opzet van een immense kerk, die zich na voltooiing zou kunnen meten met de grootste gotische kathedralen van Europa.

Sint Anna AalmoeshuisDit hofje is een van de oudste hof-jes van Leiden. Het werd gesticht in 1492 voor ‘dertien arme vrou-kens van guede faem ende naem’. Uniek is de kleine kapel voor de bewoners – de enige die nog bewaard is gebleven in een Leids hofje – die in 1509 gewijd werd. De kapel heeft een bijzondere en rijke inventaris en de vensters bevatten het oudste gebrandschil-derd glas van Nederland. Mogelijk heeft de verborgen ligging de kapel in 1566 behoed voor de beeldenstormers. Een groot deel van de middeleeuwse inventaris bleef ongeschonden.

The CitadelThe Citadel stands at the heart of the city, and is one of the oldest remaining examples of a motte fortress in the Netherlands. It comprises a man-made mound (a motte), originally with a wooden fortress. In 1203 this is where the struggle for the county of Holland was fought. The Citadel is open to the public, and if you’re prepared to negotiate the steep stairs, you will be rewarded with a breath-taking view over Leiden.

The GravensteenIf buildings could speak, the Gravensteen would recount the history of Leiden from the start of the thirteenth century. It was a reinforced tower that belonged to the local estate of the Count, but it has also been a prison, a house of reform, a book repository and a university building. It was built in the early Middle Ages and was constructed of stone – which was unusual at the time – so it was christened the Gravensteen, or Count’s stone, by the local people. In the fifteenth century it became the official city prison. Prisoners were treated cruelly: the torture chamber was known as one of the most effective in the region. The last execution was carried out in

1853. The building is now in use by the University.

Hooglandse KerkNot far from the Citadel you will find the Hooglandse Kerk, an imposing late Gothic cruciform church in the heart of Leiden. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful and imposing of Leiden’s churches. The remarkable Gothic lines and the enormous windows bathe the massive interior space with an overwhelming light. The church is renowned for its elegan-ce and has the largest expanse of windows in the Netherlands. The transept at 65.7 metres wide is the broadest Gothic transept in the world and gives a clear impression

of just how immense the com-pleted structure would have been. It was planned to rival the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Sint Anna AlmshouseThis is one of the oldest alms-houses in Leiden, and was founded in 1492 for ‘thirteen poor women of good fame and name.’ A unique feature of this courtyard is the small chapel consecrated in 1509 that was intended for use by the inhabitants. This chapel, the only one still remaining in Leiden’s almshouses, has an unusual and rich inventory, and its windows hold the oldest leaded glass in the Netherlands. The chapel’s secluded location may be what saved it from destruction in 1566 when iconoclasts destroyed many of the religious buildings in the Netherlands. Fortunately, much of the chapel’s medieval inventory remained intact.

Tijden veranderen, mensen ver-anderen. Toch blijven veel musea hetzelfde. Een plek waar kunst vaak maar voor één uitleg vatbaar is: de kunsthistorische uitleg. Meta Knol wil dat veranderen: ‘Je ziet op allerlei terreinen dat mensen mondiger worden en anders met informatie omgaan. Mensen organiseren zichzelf via internet en creëren naar het Wikipediamodel informatie met elkaar. Dat past ook bij het museum van deze tijd. Veel musea zijn nog een soort meneer die tegen je spreekt, maar niet met je spreekt. Ik wil weten wat bezoe-kers vinden. Ik wil de interactie met het publiek in De Lakenhal handen en voeten geven.’

Hoewel Knol pas enkele maanden als directeur van het museum actief is, maakte ze een vliegende start. Bij haar aantreden is ze naar eigen zeggen in een rijdende trein gesprongen: ‘Er liep al een traject met de gemeente voor investerin-gen in De Lakenhal. Daar ben ik meteen mee aan de slag gegaan. Times change, as do people. But many museums stay the same. They tend to be places where art is open to only one interpretation: the art historical approach. This is something Meta Knol wants to change: ‘People are becoming increasingly self-assured and have a different attitude to handling information. These days, they can use the internet to get themselves organised, and Wikipedia means they are able to share information with one another. That approach is equally relevant for museums today. The way many traditional museums are still run is like a man who talks at you but not with you. For me, it’s important to know what our visitors think. My aim is to make our interaction with the public into something tangible.’

Die gaan we in hoog tempo aan het publiek tonen. Daarbij mogen bezoekers zelf ook hun schatten komen laten zien. Veel mensen verzamelen wel

programming. This is just at the start of all kinds of developments. It’s a truly exciting time!’

The Lakenhal has about 25,000 works in its depot that we intend to exhibit to the public. Members of the public will also be able to show us their treasures. Lots of people are collectors - just like museums. We’re inviting visitors to have their portrait made in the museum, with their most prized possession. Then we’ll hang the photos in the museum. This kind of interaction with the public works really well.

Ideas incubator For Meta, the most unique aspect of Leiden is its history: ‘The city has more than 2,700 historic monuments, all within a few square kilometres. You can feel the history everywhere in the city, but there are new things going on, too. There are plenty of

opportunities for young initiatives. We have the Leiden Film Festival, the Flour Factory, Stadslab Leiden and the Leiden Cabaret Festival. Our Scheltema annex is the Lakenhal’s ideas incubator. It’s also a great place to eat, by the way. And then you have the many theatrical and musical performances all within walking distance. In spite of Leiden’s rich variety of art and cultural activities, for Meta there can only be one favourite: ‘The Lakenhal, of course.’

Toen Meta Knol in augustus 2009 directeur van Museum De Lakenhal werd, dacht ze Leiden aardig te kennen. Eenmaal in functie ontdekte ze dat haar nieuwe standplaats veel meer te bieden heeft dan ze voor mogelijk hield: ‘Leiden is zo’n leuke en bijzondere stad. Geschiedenis, kunst en wetenschap; het ligt hier allemaal voor het oprapen.’

Pilgrim ArchivesThe Pilgrim Archives present a surprising view of a unique part of Leiden’s history: the story of the Pilgrims. These English Protes-tants fled from England to escape the harsh regime of the established church. They lived and worked in Leiden from 1609 until 1620, when they departed for America. Learn about their history and about the Leiden of the seventeenth century that was their home.

The Leiden Weaver’s HouseThe Leiden Weaver’s House is an ordinary house in an ordinary street. The house itself is the only museum exhibit. There’s no per-manent collection, only temporary exhibitions. Step a hundred years back in time and learn about the cloth-making industry, the graphics industry and the con- serves industry. You can even examine the antique weaving loom that is still in working order today.

Academic Historical MuseumThis museum’s vast collection is housed in the Academy Building and comprises objects, photographs and documents on the history of the university and student life.

RembrandtwandelingOp 15 juli 1606 wordt in Leiden misschien wel de bekendste schilder ter wereld geboren: Rembrandt van Rijn. Tot 1631 verblijft de molenaarszoon in Leiden en zet hij zijn eerste stappen als schilder. De Rembrandtwandeling laat u kennismaken met de jeugdjaren van Rembrandt en met het Leiden van de zeventiende eeuw.

De Leidse LoperDe wandeling De Leidse Loper is dé wandeling die u laat kennismaken met de mooiste plekjes van Leiden. Veel historische monumenten en bijzondere doorkijkjes zijn doorgaans moeilijk te vinden. Op een aantal plaatsen op de route vindt u borden die uitgebreide achtergrondinformatie geven. Via uw mobiele telefoon met internet

kunt u ter plekke audiofragmenten beluisteren die de geschiedenis van deze plekken verder inkleuren.

Langs Leidse HofjesLeiden telt maar liefst 35 hofjes, vrijwel allemaal in de binnenstad. Stuk voor stuk zijn het idyllische plekjes, waar het stadsrumoer is buitengesloten en waar het lijkt alsof de tijd heeft stilgestaan. Deze stadswandeling voert u langs een selectie uit het totale aantal Leidse hofjes. Ervaar zelf dat de hofjes nog steeds oases van rust en stilte zijn.

Rembrandt TourRembrandt van Rijn, possibly the most famous artist in the world, was born on 15 July 1606 in Leiden. Until 1631 this miller’s son lived in Leiden and took his first tentative steps here as a painter. The Rembrandt tour will show you Rembrandt’s young years and will introduce you to the Leiden of the seventeenth century.

The Leiden LoopThe Leiden Loop is the ideal walking tour to introduce you to the most beautiful spots in

Leiden. Many of the city’s historic monuments and special sights could be difficult to find on your own. At a number of places along the route you will find signposts giving background information about the location, and via your mobile telephone and an internet connection you can listen to audio clips telling you more of the history of these special places.

Leiden’s almshousesLeiden has no less than 35 almshouses, almost all in the city centre. Each of these special courtyards is an idyllic respite from the bustle of the city, where you can feel as if time has stood still. This city walk will show you a selection of these almshouses. Experience for yourself these oases of peace and calm.

‘Als je vanuit het station de histo-rische binnenstad betreedt, kom je vrij snel in een cluster van cultuur. Dat begint met Museum De Lakenhal, muziektheatergezel-schap De Veenfabriek, Scheltema, direct aan de overkant de Leidse Schouwburg en Theater Imperium. Nog iets verder tref je De Stads-gehoorzaal, even doorlopen en je bent bij De Waag. Onderweg zie je prachtige kerken, de Hooglandse Kerk, de Lutherse Kerk en de Her-vormde Marekerk waar steeds meer culturele activiteiten plaatsvinden. En dan heb ik nog niet eens al die musea genoemd.’Het veelzijdige kunst- en cultuuraanbod op zo’n kleine schaal is volgens Van Mossel de kracht van Leiden: ‘Alles is te belopen of te bevaren en iedereen kan hier zijn hart ophalen. Ook kinderen. Het is be-langrijk om al op jonge leeftijd met kunst en cultuur in aanraking te komen. Zo is het voor mij ook be-gonnen. Mijn moeder nam me als kind al mee naar concerten. Ik heb op een middelbare school gezeten waar veel aandacht voor cultuur

‘When you leave the station and enter the historic city centre, you immediately enter a culture cluster. It starts with Museum De Lakenhal, then there’s the Veenfabriek music and theatre company, Scheltema, directly opposite the Leiden Schouwburg, and the Imperium Theatre. A little further on you will come to the Stadsgehoorzaal, and if you walk just a bit further you will arrive at the Weigh House. On the way you’ll pass some beautiful churches, the Hooglandse Church, the Lutheran Church and the Reformed Marekerk where more and more cultural events are being held. And I haven’t even mentioned the museums yet.’

The sheer variety of art and culture available in such a compact area is what Van Mossel believes is Leiden’s strength. ‘You can reach all Leiden’s sights on foot or by

Youp van ’t Hek treedt hier graag op en de Leidse cabaretier Jochem Myjer noemt het zijn huis.’ In de Leidse Schouwburg gaan ook veel voorstellingen in première: toneel, cabaret en musicals. Het relatief bescheiden podium vormt meestal geen belemmering. ‘We hebben

Here in Leiden we have so much to offer young people. There are children’s concerts in the Aalmarkt Hall and performances specially for children in the Leiden Schouwburg. For most children it’s an experience they’ll never forget.’ Velvet and chandeliers The same is true for adult visitors. Bart van Mossel can pick out straight away those people who are in the Leiden Schouwburg for the first time: ‘They stand there, looking around in utter amazement. The theatre is

Goddelijke akoestiek Die belevenis ervaren ook de bezoekers van de onlangs gerenoveerde Stadsgehoor-zaal. Van Mossel: ‘De akoestiek is fenomenaal. Zelfs musici van we-reldklasse zoals Ton Koopman en Yo-Yo Ma zijn onder de indruk van de akoestische kwaliteiten. Door de geraffineerde geluidsinstallatie kunnen we versterkte concerten nu ook perfect presenteren. Ook de nieuwe Aalmarktzaal heeft een goddelijke akoestiek; die wordt door kenners vergeleken met Wig-more Hall in Londen. Veel musici willen hier graag een cd opnemen. Dan hebben we nog de monumen-tale Waag uit 1659 waar we oude muziek brengen. De drie concert-zalen en het theater vullen elkaar geweldig aan in mogelijkheden.’

Youp van ’t Hek loves performing here, and Leiden cabaret artiste Jochem Myjer calls it his home-from-home.’

The Leiden Schouwburg is where many performances have their première, including drama, cabaret and musicals. The relatively modest stage is generally not a problem. ‘We have had such musicals as Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar on this stage. There may have to be minor adjustments to the decor and some scenes might have to be played differently. But most actors are

more than happy do whatever’s necessary. The interaction with

the audience is very intense. That’s something the public appreciates, too. When you come to a performance here, it’s a real experience.’

Divine acoustics Vsitors to the recently renovated Stadsgehoorzaal

have the same impression. Van Mossel: ‘The acoustics are phenomenal. Even world-class musicians like Ton Koopman and Yo-Yo Ma are impressed with the quality of the sound. Our highly refined sound system means we can now present amplified concerts perfectly. The acoustics of the new Aalmarkt Hall are divine; music connoisseurs compare it to London’s Wigmore Hall. There are a lot of musicians who are keen to record CDs here. And then there’s also the Weigh House, that dates from 1659, where we organise performances of ancient music. These three concert halls and the theatre are a perfect complement to one another.’

Bart van Mossel ziet Leiden als een rijk gevulde schatkist. ‘Er is hier zoveel te zien en te ontdekken, allemaal op loopafstand.’ De bodem van die schatkist komt voorlopig niet in zicht, want de directeur van zowel de Stadsgehoorzaal als de Leidse Schouwburg heeft grootse plannen.

Leiden laat zich vanaf het water goed bekijken. De Leidse rederijen hebben een breed aanbod in rondvaarten en arrangementen. Maar u kunt ook zelf een bootje huren. Op pagina 55 vindt u een overzicht van de rederijen.

De Leidse grachten voeren langs de musea, de Leidse hofjes en de vele historische

gebouwen met prachtige gevels. Daarnaast vindt u op vele

plekken nabij de grachten eet- en drinkgelegenheden. Vaak met het terras direct aan het water.

Leiden is ook een prima vertrek-punt voor mooie dagtochten in de omgeving. De Kaag en het Braassemmermeer liggen om de hoek en ook vaart u zo naar plaatsen als Katwijk, Delft en zelfs Rotterdam.

Komt u met uw eigen boot? Leiden is goed toegankelijk met uw eigen boot. De kades zijn laag en er zijn overal aanlegplaatsen. Op strategische locaties vindt u sloepensteigers en langs verschillende kades zijn afmeerringen aangebracht.Houdt er wel rekening dat een aantal bruggen redelijk laag zijn.

Leiden beschikt over twee passantenhavens. De passantenhaven bij de Beestenmarkt is ingericht voor dagtoeristen. Hier kunt u dus niet overnachten. In de passantenhaven aan de rand van de binnenstad kunt u wel overnachten. Deze haven is alleen vanuit het oosten bereikbaar via de Zijl, het Rijn-Schiekanaal en de Oude Rijn.

heeft in totaal 28 kilometer aan grachten en singels. Om over al die grachten en singels te komen heb je bruggen

nodig. De Leidse binnenstad telt er maar liefst 88!

Discover Leiden from the waterAn excellent way to see Leiden is from the water, and the Leiden city cruises are a good choice. But, if you prefer, you can also rent a boat. You will find a list of the boat companies at page 55 of this brochure.

Leiden’s canals flow past the museums, the almshouses and the city’s many historic buildings, all with their imposing façades. You will also find many delightful cafés and restaurants lining Leiden’s canals, some with terraces directly on the water.Leiden is also a good starting point for many daytrips in the area. The Kaag and Braassemmer-meer are very close by and you can also travel by boat to towns like Katwijk, Delft and even Rotterdam.

Maybe you have your own boat?Leiden is easily accessible if you have your own boat. The sides of the canals are low so you can moor almost anywhere. There are jetties for barges at strategic

points, and moorings are available alongside many of the quaysides. Please take note that some of Leiden’s bridges are rather low.

Leiden has two harbours for passing travellers. The one near the Beestenmarkt is for day-trippers; overnight stops are not possible. If you would like to stay overnight, there is the harbour on the outskirts of the city centre, next to the Zijlpoort. This harbour can only be reached from the east side, via the Zijl, the Rijn-Schie canal and the Old Rijn.

MarktGroente, vis, fruit, bloemen, kleding, delicatessen uit alle windstreken… U kunt het zo gek niet bedenken of u vindt het op de Leidse markt. De markt geeft Leiden als winkelstad een extra dimensie. Op woensdag en zaterdag vindt u op de kades van de Botermarkt, Vismarkt, Aalmarkt en Nieuwe Rijn een uitgebreide warenmarkt. Aanbod te over, u bent van harte welkom!

PieterskwartierDeze monumentale wijk ligt ingeklemd tussen de Breestraat in het noorden en het Rapenburg in het zuiden. Het centrale punt is de Pieterskerk. In deze wijk kunt u heerlijk slenteren door de pittoreske steegjes en authentieke Leidse hofjes. Hier vindt u zeer uiteenlopende winkeltjes die u elders in de regio niet treft. Niet alleen vanwege de historische setting, maar ook vanwege de onderscheidende winkeltjes is een bezoekje aan het Pieterskwartier

HaarlemmerstraatMidden in het centrum van Leiden treft u ruim één kilometer winkelplezier. De Haarlemmerstraat is dé winkelstraat van Leiden en een must voor iedereen die eens een dagje goed wil winkelen. Naast de landelijke ketens treft u ook een grote variëteit aan kleine winkeltjes aan.

BreestraatDwars door het oude centrum ligt de Breestraat. Deze straat werd vroeger, vanwege haar breedte, de

‘Breede Straete’ genoemd. Sinds het begin van de 20e eeuw is de Breestraat een lange en statige winkelstraat. U treft hier een grote variëteit aan winkels, maar de boekwinkels springen er uit. De Breestraat wordt in de volksmond ook wel de boekenboulevard van Zuid-Holland genoemd.

DoezastraatIn het zuiden van het oude centrum ligt de Doezastraat. Deze straat herbergt een klein aantal winkeliers in een bijzonder segment. Wanneer u de échte slager zoekt of een authentieke kruidenier, moet u

in de Doezastraat zijn. U kunt er slenteren langs bijzondere winkels.

HogewoerdDeze van oorsprong oude dijk langs de Nieuwe Rijn is sinds het begin van de twintigste eeuw een gezellige winkelstraat. Doordat deze straat net buiten het winkelcentrum ligt, vind je er veel bijzondere speciaalzaken. Er heerst altijd een gezellige drukte.

Koopzondag en –avondIn Leiden is het iedere laatste zondag van de maand koopzondag. De winkels in het centrum mogen echter zelf bepalen of zij ook op de andere zondagen van de maand op willen zijn. De wekelijkse koopavond is op donderdag. De winkels zijn dan tot 21.00 uur open.

Natuurlijk zijn bijna alle landelijke ketens vertegenwoordigd, maar het zijn juist die speciaalzaakjes in kleine straatjes en steegjes in het historische centrum die het shoppen zo leuk maken. Een goede service, vriendelijke bediening, aandacht voor kwaliteit en een bijzonder aanbod. Kijk, kies en koop bij de vele sfeervolle antiek- en boekenwinkels, bijzondere kledingzaken, delicatessenwinkels, cadeaushops en galeries.

Leiden’s atmospheric setting has many unique shops, which makes it an excellent city for a shopping trip. Of course, you’ll find nearly all the national chain stores here, but it’s those individual, ‘special’ shops tucked away in the small streets and alleys of the historic city centre that make shopping such fun. The Leiden MarketVegetables, fish, fruit, flowers, clothes and delicacies from all corners of the world... Almost everything you can imagine can all be found at Leiden’s street market. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the stalls of this bustling market line the Botermarkt, the Vismarkt, the Aalmarkt and the Nieuwe Rijn, adding an extra touch of local and foreign colour to shopping in Leiden. There’s a wide choice; you are welcome to come and see for yourself!

PieterskwartierThis historic district lies between the Breestraat to the north and the Rapenburg to the south, and centres around the Pieterskerk. It’s the perfect area for a relaxing stroll through the charming alleys, taking in the courtyards of the authentic Leiden almshouses. You’ll find all those special shops here that are unique to Leiden. With its historic setting and its distinctive shops, a visit to the Pieterskwartier is an absolute must for every visitor to the centre of Leiden.

HaarlemmerstraatIn the heart of Leiden’s city centre you will find over a kilometre of shopping pleasure. The Haarlem-merstraat is Leiden’s main shop-ping street, and a must for every-one who likes shopping. Besides the nationwide chain stores, there is also a wide variety of individual, specialist shops in this popular shopping street.

BreestraatRunning straight through the city centre you will find the Breestraat. This street used to be called the ‘Breede Straete’ and since the beginning of the 20th century the long and elegant ‘Broad Street’ has been a prestige shopping area. You will find a wide variety of shops

here, but it is particularly known for its bookstores. The Breestraat is also popularly known as the book boulevard of South Holland.

DoezastraatTo the south of the old centre of Leiden is the charming Doeza-straat. This street is home to a small number of shops in a specialist segment of the market. If you are looking for a real butcher or an authentic greengrocer, the Doezastraat is the place to go. This is where you will find some of Leiden’s most unique shops.

HogewoerdOriginally an old embankment along the Nieuwe Rijn, Hogewoerd has been a lively shopping street for over a century. This typical Leiden neighbourhood lies just outside the centre; you can find many specialty stores in this friendly, bustling area.

Sunday shopping and late-night shoppingIn Leiden, every last Sunday of the month is shopping Sunday, and some shops are open every Sunday. The weekly late-night shopping evening is on Thursday, when the shops are open until nine o’clock.

D66 leader Alexander Pechtold is no stranger to Leiden. It’s the city where he studied and where he started his political career. As an art connoisseur and former local councillor, he knows just what Leiden has to offer: ‘Wherever you go, you come across historic monu-ments, but Leiden is also a city for a leisurely stroll.’

That Leiden feeling. D66 par-liamentary chairman Alexander Pechtold knows it well. In fact, he knows the city like the back of his hand: he has studied here, lived here, worked here for the local council and attended conferences here, and currently he comes here as a visitor. ‘I’m often in Leiden. My hairdresser is here; I come here to have my watch mended and I love coming to concerts here. When we lived in Leiden, my wife and I used to come into the centre on Saturday mornings, to shop at the market, for coffee or for an exhibition. It’s all so compact, yet at the same time it’s very much a city. What strikes me is that so few

people really know Leiden. It’s a city that’s not only interesting for foreign visitors, but it’s well worth a visit for Dutch people, too. It has an enormous number of treasu-res that only a few visitors ever discover.’

Not so brashHow does he account for that? ‘The people of Leiden are proud of their city, but they’ve never really boasted about it. They don’t have the brashness of Amsterdam or Rotterdam. You can see it in the almshouses; Leiden has no less than 35 of these secluded courtyards. Maybe this seclusion is a kind of symbol for Leiden: authentic, but a bit introvert. It can take a lot of courage to open the door to the outside world.’ Pechtold also puts Leiden’s unspoilt beauty down to the lack of money that the city suffered in the fifties. ‘At the time when other cities were engaged in major restructuring operations, Leiden

was too poor. There was simply no money to demolish the buildings, so they had to make do with painting them. That was actually Leiden’s saving grace.’

UniqueSieboldHouse, the Hortus botanicus, Leiden’s almshouses, the Stadsgehoorzaal, four national museums, Naturalis for a visit with the children, the De Valk windmill museum and – Pechtold’s personal favourite – the view of the Pieterskerk from the Herensteeg; it’s the enormous variety of at-tractions – and all within walking distance - that makes a visit to Leiden such a pleasure. But to

really get to know Leiden you have to see it for yourself. ‘I can remember

the first time I came here as if it were yesterday. I was just 18, and I walked from the station to the Rapenburg to enrol at the Univer-sity. It was love at first sight, and that feeling has never gone away.’ The Pechtold family has lived in Wageningen since 2003. Is it likely that they might return to Leiden? ‘I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. Leiden is a place you never tire of.’

Het Leidengevoel. Fractievoorzitter D66 Alexander Pechtold kan er over meepraten. Hij kent de stad als student, inwoner, bestuurder, congresganger en tegenwoordig weer als bezoeker. ‘Ik kom er nog vaak. Ik heb er nog steeds mijn kapper, laat er mijn horloge maken en woon er graag een concert bij. Toen ik nog in Leiden woonde, ging ik op zaterdagochtend vaak met mijn vrouw het centrum in. Even naar de markt, koffiedrinken, een tentoonstelling bekijken. Het is allemaal zo overzichtelijk, aan de andere kant is het ook echt een

stad. Het valt me op dat weinig mensen de stad echt kennen. Leiden is niet alleen leuk voor buitenlanders, ook voor Nederlan-ders is een bezoek aan Leiden de moeite waard. De stad heeft veel juweeltjes die eigenlijk nog maar door weinigen ontdekt zijn.’

Geen blufHoe komt dat? ‘Leidenaren zijn trots op hun stad, maar ze hebben dat nooit zo sterk uitgedragen. Ze hebben niet de bluf van Amsterdammers of Rotterdammers. Dat zie je ook terug in de hofjes; Leiden heeft er maar liefst 35. Misschien vormt de beslotenheid van die

hofjes een mooie symboliek voor Leiden. Authentiek, maar enigszins introvert. Je moet wel het lef hebben om die deur open te duwen.’ De onaangetaste schoonheid van Leiden heeft volgens Pechtold ook te maken met het geldgebrek waarmee de stad in de jaren vijftig kampte. ‘In de periode waarin andere steden grote herstructureringen doorvoerden, was de stad te arm. In Leiden moesten ze een pand wel schilderen, er was geen geld om het af te breken. Dat is natuurlijk wel het behoud geweest.’

UniekHet SieboldHuis, de Hortus botanicus, de Leidse hofjes, de Stadsgehoorzaal, vier rijksmusea, met de kinderen naar Naturalis en Molenmuseum De Valk en – Pechtolds persoonlijke favoriet - het zicht vanuit de Herensteeg op de Pieterskerk; het veelzijdige aanbod op loopafstand maakt Leiden de moeite waard. Maar om Leiden te ontdekken, moet je het echt zelf zien. ‘Ik weet nog precies hoe ik op mijn 18de jaar vanuit het station Leiden binnenliep om me in te schrijven op het Rapenburg. Het was liefde op het eerste gezicht, en dat is het altijd gebleven.’ Het gezin Pechtold woont sinds 2003 in Wageningen. Is er kans op terugkeer naar Leiden? ‘Dat sluit ik zeker niet uit. In Leiden raak je nooit uitgekeken.’

LakenfeestenZowel voor de Leidenaar als de toerist is het centrum van Leiden begin juli één groot feest. Vier dagen lang kunt u genieten van een keur aan onderdelen in het Lakenfeestprogramma, zoals de Peurbakkentocht, de Laken- en curiosamarkt, de Dragonboatrace en er is veel live muziek.

Rapenburg ConcertIn het laatste weekeinde van augustus is het Rapenburg het culturele centrum van Leiden.

Drie dagen lang worden alle mogelijke publiekslocaties op en rond het Rapenburg ingezet voor de programmering van diverse kunstvormen. Het majestueuze hoofdpodium middenin het trotse Rapenburg vormt het podium van muziek, poëzie, dans en beeldende kunst.

Open MonumentendagenIn september kunt u meer dan dertig monumentale panden bezichtigen die anders niet of moeilijk toegankelijk zijn. Ook

worden dit weekend concerten en kinderactiviteiten georganiseerd .

Leidens OntzetIeder jaar op 2 en 3 oktober trilt de Sleutelstad op haar grondvesten. Leiden herdenkt dan de belegering tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog en het ontzet op 3 oktober 1574, met talrijke evenementen. Traditionele onderdelen zijn de uitreiking van haring en wittebrood, de taptoe, de grote optocht en de kermis.

Leids Film FestivalGeniet zes dagen lang van niets anders dan films. Niet alleen in de bioscopen, maar ook in musea en op culturele- en poppodia wordt een groot aantal nieuwe en bijzondere films getoond. Ieder jaar worden er ook speciale (voor)premières en arthousefilms naar Leiden gehaald.

Rapenburg ConcertDuring the last weekend of August, the Rapenburg is transformed into the cultural heart of Leiden and

Open Monument DaysIn the second week of September you have the chance to visit more than thirty historic monuments that are usually either closed to the public or where visits are

The Relief of LeidenEvery year on 2 and 3 October the City of Keys shakes on its founda-tions. This is when Leiden com-memorates the seige of the city during the Eighty Years War and its relief on 3 October 1574. The city is one gigantic party, when citizens and visitors can join in the traditional festivities. There’s al-ways a parade of marching bands, a costume pageant and a funfair. And not to mention the traditional handing out of herring and white bread to the citizens of Leiden.

Het is precies 435 jaar geleden dat Willem van Oranje de universiteit in Leiden oprichtte, als gift aan de bevolking. Anno 2010 staat de Universiteit Leiden wereldwijd hoog aangeschreven. Rector magnificus en voorzitter van het College van Bestuur, professor mr. Paul van der Heijden vindt het vooral belangrijk dat de universiteit midden in de samenleving staat.

The icon of the cityJust as the Dam square is the icon of Amsterdam, the Academy Building is the icon of Leiden. At least in the opinion of Paul van der Heijden, for whom it is the most important venue in Leiden. ‘It has been part of our University since the very outset; it is the “holiest of holies.” The building dates from 1516 and has been in use by the University since 1581.’ Academiegebouw

Het gebouw dateert uit 1516 en wordt sinds 1581 door de universiteit gebruikt.’

Het AcademiegebouwDoor de hele stad komt u gebouwen tegen van de universiteit. Hiervan is het Academiegebouw het bekendst. Dit gebouw vormt het hart van de universiteit en ligt in het centrum van de stad aan het Rapenburg. Het werd in 1581 in gebruik genomen door de universiteit. Deze voormalige kapel van een nonnenklooster is door de jaren heen voor vele doeleinden

The most important of these is the Academy Building, that forms the heart of the university and is located close to the city centre, along the Rapenburg. It was first used by the university in 1581. This former chapel of a nunnery has been used for many different purposes throughout the years, including as an observatory and a library.It is still in use today for such events as official visits, academic ceremonies and examinations. Royal LeidenLeiden University has always enjoyed a special relationship with the Dutch royal family, starting with Prince William of Orange, the University’s founder. Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix studied in Leiden, as did Crown Prince Willem Alexander. The Crown Prince also lived in Leiden and played an active part in Leiden’s student life. Both Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix have received honorary doctorates from the university.

Leiden, de ligging De ligging van de stad Leiden is ideaal: op steenworp afstand van grote centra als Den Haag en Amsterdam. De stad is internationaal bereik-baar, met de luchthaven Schiphol op 20 minuten en het kleinere Rotterdam Airport op 25 minuten afstand. Tevens vindt u op een tiental kilometers van Leiden de Noordzeekust en bent u ook zo in het gebied van het Groene Hart.

Auto Met de auto is Leiden goed bereikbaar. Leiden is gelegen tus-sen de snelwegen A4 en A44. De binnenstad is weliswaar autoluw, maar tegelijk liggen in een cirkel rond het historische hart meer dan drieduizend parkeerplaatsen voor bezoekers, verspreid over verschil-lende parkeergarages en grote en kleine parkeerterreinen.

Parkeerterrein Haagweg (tip)Het grootste parkeerterrein van Leiden ligt aan de Haagweg en functioneert als een volwaardig transferium. Zowel overdag als ‘s avonds rijden (gratis) pendel-busjes van het parkeerterrein naar alle plekken in het centrum en uiteraard ook weer terug. Voor groepen zijn er speciale afspraken te maken, zodat u altijd verzekerd bent van vervoer naar de binnenstad. Meer info: www.stadsparkeerplan.com.

Openbaar vervoer Leiden is uitstekend te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. Vanuit diverse

richtingen stoppen er treinen op station Leiden Centraal. Vanuit dit station loopt u zo de binnen-stad in. En de bussen rijden met een hoge frequentie naar vrijwel alle plekken in de stad.

Touringcarplekken Touringcars kunnen terecht op het parkeerter-rein Haagweg of op het parkeerter-rein bij Molen de Valk.

The city can also be reached easily by international visitors, with Schiphol just 20 minutes away and Rotterdam’s smaller airport at 25 minutes distance. Leiden is within ten kilometres of Holland’s North Sea coast, and the Green Heart of the Netherlands is also close at hand.

By car Leiden is located between the A4 and A44 motorways, which makes it easy to reach by car. The city centre is a pedestrian-only area, but visitors will find space for more than 3,000 cars in the many small and large car parks and garages spread around the periphery of the centre.

Public transport Leiden is easy to reach by public transport. Trains from all directions stop at Leiden Central Station, and the city centre is just a short walk from the station. Or, if you prefer, there is a frequent bus service from the station to almost anywhere in the city.
