Welcome to Bellarmine University. We are happy that

you’re considering Bellarmine for your undergraduate higher

education. Over the years, we have earned the reputation

as a university that provides students the tools they need to

achieve their own personal success in life.

Our formula for helping students achieve their success is

quite simple, yet different from most universities. We start

with an intimate classroom setting where caring, qualified

faculty members work closely with and know you personally.

This relationship between professors and students is often the

difference in assuring a student’s success. By knowing students

on a personal level, faculty members know when students

need help or when they need to be challenged.

Outside the classroom, you’ll also find a caring community

dedicated to your success. Our Academic Resource Center is

committed to helping students who are having difficulty

making the transition into the demands and rigors of higher

education. Meanwhile, our vibrant student life offers a

variety of facilities and activities that make Bellarmine

a fun place to live, learn and play.

I invite you to visit the Bellarmine University campus and

discover for yourself the many wonderful facets of our campus,

academic environment and student life.

The Bellarmine DifferencePreparing students for life is Bellarmine’sbasic mission—a mission that should be shared by all educational institutions. So how is Bellarmine different?

First of all, you’ll see the Bellarmine difference in the people you’ll meet. Our faculty is deeply committed toteaching and beyond. By that, we meanBellarmine teachers are here to teach, but they also have a genuine interest in their students’ success in and out of the classroom.

“You’re not only getting an education, but you’re getting a unique experiencein the sense that you’re going to have a lot of people care about you as a person. I think that it’s important thatthe student is valued here. We wantstudents to experience who they want tobe, and how they can continue to growafter they leave Bellarmine.”

Another difference you’ll discover at Bellarmine is a community wellsuited to help you prepare for life.On campus, our community is smallenough to foster friendships withpeers and mentors alike, but largeenough to provide academic andrecreational amenities that are crucialto a viable collegiate experience.

Off campus, you’ll find that the city of Louisville offers a wealth ofopportunities to broaden your educational experience with social, cultural and professional activities to satisfy practically all walks of life. “Here’s what I often hear from students.

‘It’s nice to be known by name and not a number. It’s nice that when I pass youin the halls you know me by name. I like that feeling.’

“It’s that one-on-one talk. It’s that one-on-one interaction. It’s that one-on-one interest that says I’m interested in you beyond the classes you take here. What are you going to do when you leave us and how can we help you prepare for that?”

Bellarmine College Bellarmine College is home to BellarmineUniversity’s arts and science programs. As such, it shapes the Catholic liberal artseducational tradition that is the veryfoundation, and thus the difference, of aBellarmine education.

You will find a purposeful developmentalsequence to your educational experienceoutside your major in the arts and sciences. As a freshman, you will gain self-knowledgeand come to understand yourself as an individual. Next, you’ll experience what itmeans to be part of a community and theAmerican society. During the final

semesters, you’ll develop a global world-viewthrough international study opportunitiesand transcultural courses.

As a student in an arts and science program, you’ll find a faculty committed to theintellectual development of the wholeperson. Therefore, we encourage you toconnect your learning to the communityaround you through diverse internshipexperiences.

A liberal arts degree is still the most sought-after degree because it providesopportunities to combine two or more disciplines (through double majors/minors)into a comprehensive educational package.Students taking this path find rewardingemployment or acceptance into graduate, law, medical and other professional schools.

Annsley Frazier Thornton School of EducationThe School of Education is recognizedthroughout the region for producing outstanding teachers, a reputation that wasearned through constant innovation andchange. Therefore, your experience as an education major will be different from students at other schools.

First, Bellarmine’s education programs offerearly “field” experiences to provide you with a taste of what being a teacher is all about.Hopefully, this will confirm your desire to be a teacher. However, if it does not, youhaven’t wasted a lot of time pursuing a careeryou don’t want.

Another major difference in Bellarmine’s education program is that all elementaryand middle school majors are part of theintegrated learning and behavior disorder(LBD) program. This means graduateshave completed the requirements to becertified to teach both in LBD and regular classrooms. Students majoring insecondary education receive a degree intheir content area major (history, math,English, etc.) and certification to teach the content in grades 8-12.

The School of Education’s success can be easily documented—most of our education majors are hired before theygraduate and our graduates have anastounding 100% pass rate on the Praxiscertification tests.

Bellarmine is the only school in the nation at which all of its undergraduate elementary

education graduates are duallycertified for teaching in

traditional and LBD programs.
