Adore the dazzling arts sceneWhile Camberwell is many things to many people, its dazzling arts scene is one of its most renowned and celebrated qualities.
Of course, this is in no small part due to the Camberwell College of Arts on Peckham Road, which has been training the artists of the future for more than a century. Indeed, alumni include illustrator Quentin Blake, filmmaker Mike Leigh and musician Florence Welch to name a few. The college throws open its doors to the public throughout the year with a varied schedule of events and exhibitions.
You can also discover the best of contemporary art at distinguished art spaces such as GX Gallery or the South London Gallery, with its regularly-changing free installations housed in an impressive Victorian space.
Camberwell’s highly anticipated arts festival has captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike since 1994 with its mix of gallery exhibition, performance and artistic workshops, inspirational talks and much more. It’s a real celebration of all things creative and design, and attracts many year-on-year.

Inspired by Camberwell’s undeniable connection to the arts and vibrant community, we wanted to invite a local artist (Jenny Leonard) and renowned photographer (Tom Leighton) to become involved in The Camberwell Project and capture the ‘inner beauty’ of the area through their eyes and work.
Their artwork can be seen throughout this brochure and also on display in The Gallery marketing suite for all to enjoy.
Community-driven commission artist Jenny constantly pursues collaborative art projects that bring people together.
We have used Jenny’s artistic talents for this project. She created 4 paintings which will be displayed at The Gallery as she is a previous winner of Camberwell Open Art show and her love of the area shines through in her artwork.
Jenny also offers live sketching on canvases at events and conferences in and around London.

Tom Leighton is a commercial photographer specialising in children’s fashion, lifestyle photography and food.
He moved to Camberwell in 2007 and quickly fell in love with the area, and is now considered one of Camberwell’s foremost devotees having vowed never to live in another part of London again.
Tom likes to see beyond the bricks and mortar of the area and photograph the people that make SE5 such a unique place to live; including his 2012 series “36 Reasons To Love Camberwell” which introduced the places, bars, restaurants and shops that he loves, and the people who work in them. This was quickly followed with his 2013 series “Picture The Block” featuring his neighbours of the D’Eynsford Estate.
Due to his passion for the area we commissioned Tom to take photos for The Gallery, capturing the inner beauty of Camberwell.
