The Hidden Water in Everyday Products

Although we don’t see it, millions of gallonsof water go into producing the products

we buy, use and throw away.

1 pound of plastic = 24 gallons of water

1 pound of cotton = 101 gallons of water

1 pound of beef = 1,857 gallons of water

4 new tires = 2,072 gallons of water

1 pair blue jeans = 2,900 gallons of water

1 pound of chicken = 518 gallons of water

1 ton steel = 62,000 gallons of water

You can save about 3.5 gallons of water just by recycling one newspaper! By recycling or reusing items when we can and choosing less plastic bags, we can make a big difference. Every drop counts!

WHAT’S THEVALUE OF WATER?

Learn how water works for you. Visit TheValueofWater.org.

Presented in cooperation with the Value of Water coalition

There are nearly 400,000 house fires in the U.S. each year, and water that flows from hydrants is our best defense.

Most of us never think about how water gets to us. Luckily, we don’t have to. Pumps, treatment plants, and pipes bring us clean water and carry away wastewater. All day, every day.

But our water systems are aging. They need investment to continue delivering life’s most essential resource.

Water—Essential. Reliable. Invaluable.

More than 188 billion liters of

bottled water fly off shop shelves globally every

year.

It takes36 ounces of water

to produce a 12 ounce plastic water bottle.

Tap wateris on average

500 times cheaper than bottled water

…and is just as good for you.

About20% of the bottles are recycled. Most go to landfill. They take 450 years to

break down.

2.5 milliontons of CO2 are

produced by bottling - not

counting transport, marketing,

etc.

The waterthat comes out

of every resident’s household plumbing only

costs approximately1/2¢ per gallon!*

By comparison,if you were to use bottled water, you would pay $1 for that same gallon.

Bulk Trash Program

• Pour cooled fats, oils and grease into a covered, disposable container and throw it into the trash. Do not pour them down sink drains or toilets.

• Soak up spilled oils and grease with an absorbent material – such as paper towels or kitty litter – and throw into trash.

Keep fats, oils and grease (FOG) from clogging your drain. Follow these simple steps

to help prevent sewer backups.

• Before washing dishes, scrape food waste, fats, oilsand grease into trash.

• Use sink strainers to catch any remaining food wastewhile washing dishes, then discard into trash.

Pollution• Report hazardous spills to the

fire department. Call 9-1-1.

• Dispose of household hazardous waste properly.

• Properly maintain your vehicleto keep leaks out of our water.

• To drain your swimming pool, putthe water down the home’s sewer clean-out, not in the gutter.

• Never pour used motor oil onthe ground. Recycle it instead.

• Take your car to the car wash where the dirty water is prevented from polluting the environment.

• Use fertilizers sparinglyand never before it rains.

• Minimize pesticide use andavoid highly toxic products.

• Harvesting rainwater is a great way to water your yard and conserve water.

• Pick up your pet’s waste before it contaminates our drinking water.

SmartChoices

Product Purchasing Tips

You can reduce exposure to harmful chemicals by purchasing less hazardous household products.

• Look for products that list all their ingredients on the label. Generally, fewer ingredients are better.

• Use a multipurpose cleaner rather than buying many specialty cleaners.

• Choose products that are made from plant-based materials like citrus, seeds, vegetables, herbs or pine oils.

• Choose products that have low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

• Choose water-based glues, adhesives and paints.

• Choose the least toxic product to do the job. A product with the signal word “caution” on its label is less hazardous than a product with the signal words “warning”, “danger” or “poison.”

Pass on antibacterial products – antibac-terial soaps, hand sanitizers and other clean-ers may actually be aiding in the develop-ment of super bacteria.

Washing your hands three times a day with regular soap and water works well for killing germs.

Many shampoos, cosmetics, toothpastes, soaps and detergents contain antibacterial agents such as Triclosan and Triclocarban. Avoid them, if possible.

If you use hand sanitizers, pick ones with at least 60% ethanol or ethyl alcohol.

Some body products like cosmetics and hairspray include compounds that mimic estrogen and may have adverse affects. Watch out for Phthlates and Isopropyl-, Butyl-, and Isobutyl- parabens.

Nail polish and remover can contain Formaldehyde, Formalin, Toluene and Dibutyl phthalates. Try water-based products instead.

Pick plastics with awareness. Avoid polyvinyl chloride (#3) and polycarbonate containers (#7). Plastics with a #1, 2, 4, or 5 don’t contain Bisphenal A (BPA) and may be better choices.

Shop carefully and read labels closely!

Call Solid Waste at 623-773-7431 or email [email protected] get a replacement.

Place containers out by 6:00 am and four feet apart (an arm and an elbow) with the rear wheels in the curb area.

Make sure containers are not too close to vehicles, mailboxes, fences or other obstacles.

TM

• Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and walkways.

• Choose and use appliances wisely by always using at full capacity.

• Consider purchasing a dual-flush toilet. These technology-savvy toilets are great to promotewater conservation. You mayeven qualify for a rebate.

• Minimize the use of the kitchen sink garbage disposal – compost instead!

• Water the grass, not the gutter! Adjust your sprinklers to apply water where it is needed, not wasted.

• Turn off the tap! Don’t leave water running needlessly.

• Make sure every tap in your home has a high-efficiency faucet aerator.

• Plant drought-resistant shrubs and plants. If you convert to Xeriscape, you may qualify for a rebate!

8 Easy Ways toConserve Water!

Water Your Yard Naturally with Microbasins! There are many things we can do to reduce stormwater runoff.

Instead of paving driveways and patios, we can use alternative, pervi-

ous surfaces such as gravel, crushed stone, or open paving blocks.

We can also build small channels to direct stormwater to our plants.

We can even harvest (collect and store) stormwater for future use.

Everyone can help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff!

Microbasins capture runoff and allow water to seep into the soil.

Flushing money down the toilet?A leaking toilet can waste over 6,000 gallons a month.

P.S. Peoria offers rebatesfor smart irrigation controllers.Visit www.peoriaaz.gov/conservation for details.

TIP Adjust your irrigation as the seasons change and turn it off when it rains! Landscape Watering by the Numbers will guide you through the steps with interactive guides. Get your copy at: wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/landscape-watering-guide.

Smart controllers useweather and site data to automatically determine the right time of day to water and how long to water, applying just enough watering time ineach zone of your yard.

How to Perform a Dye Test1. Lift the tank cover.2. Place a few drops of food coloring into the tank.3. Wait 15 minutes. Do not use the toilet.4. If the color appears in the toilet bowl, you have a leak.

If you have a leak, find out how to fix it with the Smart Home Water Guide. Visit www.smarthomewaterguide.org.

What are some misconceptions about gardening in the Southwest?

That you can’t do it. I hear all the time from people “I didn’t know you could grow (fill in the blank) here!” We have to approach things differently, but you can garden successfully in our harsh climate.

What are some of the most common landscape and gardening challenges you hear from residents?

The most common problem I come across is poor watering practices, usually too much water. The question I get all the time is “How much should I water?” That all depends on your soil, watering system, exposure and type of plant, so I usually have to dig a little deeper.

What’s the deal with our soil? Are we better off growing gardens in a raised garden bed?

Our soil is high in salts and low in organic material. So using amended soil in your vegeta-ble garden is important. However, I recom-mend sunken beds instead of raised beds. Sunken beds will keep your plants cooler in the summer and retain more water in the soil around the plants.

The Community Garden at the corner of 83rd Avenue and Madison Street at its full bloom ready for bed owners to harvest their food.

Peoria’s inaugural community garden began as an empty lot in the heart of Peoria’s original town site, but grew into a thriving place of commu-nity and learning. The empty granite covered parcel was once an aesthetic blemish in Peoria’s Old Town, but has now become a beautiful, healthy garden where the community is producing sustainable, local, organic food.
