DAY 2 •QUITOBreakfast is served at the hotel. During your guided tour of the capital
of Ecuador, situated at an altitude of 9,350 feet, you’ll stand on the equatorial line at the Middle of the World Park and Museum, and marvel at the monastery of San Francisco and La Compañía de Jesús Church. Your Tour Director will escort you throughout your

DAY14 • WEDNESDAYAM/PM • SACREDVALLEY/ MACHU PICCHUAfter breakfast at the hotel,depart for Machu Picchu on theVistadome from the Tambo del Inca hotel train station. Lunch will
be served at the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu. Tour the almost perfectly preserved buildings and the mysterious passageways underlying the city. Then enjoy welcoming aperitifs, dinner, and an excellent selection of wines, while relaxing on the Orient Express

ride within this sheltered inlet offers viewing of a wide varietyof wildlife and a wonderful mangroveecosystem.
ESPINOZA POINT, FERNANDINAISLANDFernandina is the youngest island inthe Galapagos and, as Darwin wrote,
it is “covered with immense deluges of black naked lava.” Along with its extraordinary black lava rocks, this point of land hosts the largest colony of marine iguanasin the Archipelago,
along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightlesscormorants.

KICKERROCK,SAN CRISTOBALISLANDKicker Rock or León Dormido, named
for its characteristic shape like that of a boot or sleepinglion,is a dramatic sight with the remains of a volcanic tuff cone rising almost 148m straight up out of the ocean. Erosion has split the rock
into two parts, forming a narrow channelbetween.
LASBACHAS,SANTA CRUZISLANDLasBachas Beach is located in the north
of Santa CruzIsland. Its soft, white sand is derived from coral and shells,making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind the beach there is a small brackish lagoon, where it is possible to
observe flamingos and other coastal birds,such as black-necked stiltsandwhimbrels.
LOSLOBOS,SAN CRISTOBALISLANDNamed after its large colony of sea
lions, this islandusually allowsvisitors to
observe sea lion pups, especially while snorkeling. In addition, we may see
blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds,and

MORENO POINT, ISABELAISLANDAlong this beautiful rocky shore, afield of hardened black lava flows is
pockmarked by shallow pools, which are home to shorebirds and flamingos. The mangrove-linedshorealso provides a chance to see marine iguanas, sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, penguins, and
the flightlesscormorant.
MOSQUERAISLETThis small, flat, sandy islet sits in the channel between Baltra and North
Seymour. It is almost devoid of vegetation, but has one of the largest populations of sea lions in the islands. Its sandy expanse offers visitors the perfect opportunity to observesea lion
behavior. It is also a beautiful site to observelava gulls,coastal birds,and Sally lightfoot crabs.
NORTHSEYMOURISLANDNorth Seymour is a small island just north of Baltra. It is home to the largest
colony of frigatebirds in the Galapagos. While keeping an eye out for male frigatebirds trying to impress potential mates with an inflated red neck pouch,you mayalso see blue-footed boobies dancing in a timeless courtship ritual.
POST OFFICEBAY, FLOREANAISLANDRich in history,this site is home to thepost office barrel established in about
1793, where pirates, buccaneers, whalers, and others could leave their mail to be picked up by outbound ships. The tradition continues today,as visitors leave addressed postcards in the
barrel and sort through left mail to deliverat home.
PUERTO AYORA, SANTACRUZISLANDThis is the main population center of theislands, and home to the National Park
Servicetortoise-breeding center and the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will be able to visit the tortoise-breeding center and walk through the Charles Darwin ResearchStation.
SOUTH PLAZA, SANTACRUZISLANDOneof the islands off SantaCruz, SouthPlaza was born of upheaval, uplifted
during a geologic event. The rocky island is strewn with prickly pear cactus and home to land iguanas, marine iguanas, and a colony of sea lions.
SUAREZ POINT, ESPAÑOLAISLANDEspañola is the oldest islandin the
Galapagos.SuarezPoint is also home to large populationsof Nazca andblue-footed boobies, colorful Española
lava lizards, Galapagos hawks, Española mockingbirds, three species of Darwin’sfinches,Galapagosdoves, swallow-tailed
gulls and red-billed tropicbirds, which dash in and out of the cracks in the
cliffs, as well as the astounding waved albatross(betweenApriland December).
The 10,000 to 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosson Española representthevast majorityof this specieson the planet.
SULLIVAN BAY, SANTIAGOISLANDDuring a volcaniceruptionin the early1900’s, thisareaof Santiagowascovered
with flowing lava. Today, the hardened fields of black rock create a geologic wonderland.Wewill takeadvantageofthe cool of early morningfor a walk to view
strange twisting hardened lava flows, collapsedcraters, andeveryone’s favorite, the hornitosor lava ovens.Tallred scoria cones and pioneer plants also dot this
unusualand very young landscape.
TAGUSCOVE,ISABELAISLANDHistorically an anchoragefor pirates and whalers, this site offers a
breathtaking view of Isabela, its volcanoes, and spectacular Darwin Lake. Along the shore, seabirds, penguins, sea lions, seaturtles, and nesting flightless cormorants can
often befound.
VICENTEROCAPOINT, ISABELAISLANDThe half-collapsed remainsof anancient volcano make for a spectacular
setting at this site. Awe-inspiring cliffs, blue waters,and wildlife create a Zodiac ride to remember as we search for sea turtles, penguins,fur seals, the flightless cormorant, marine iguanas, marine
mammals, and the oddly shaped form of the elusivesunfish.
WALLOFTEARS, ISABELAISLANDThe Wall is 15 to 20 feet (5-6m) high,10 feet (3m) wide, and approximately
300 feet (100m) long. When jailed in a penal colony here between 1944 and 1959, prisoners were forced to build the wall, stone by stone, in isolation,only to
be asked to tear it down again and start
over. It is a lesson in history and a
remnant of a cruel and intolerant time.
WARLOCKHILL(CERROBRUJO), SAN CRISTOBALISLANDLocated on the north coast of SanCristobal Island, Cerro Brujo is the
eroded remains of a volcanic tuff cone. It is one of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin. CaptainFitzroyclimbed to the top of the hill to scout out reefs.
The favorite attraction here is the gorgeous whitesandbeach—awonderful place to swim or take a walk along the shoreline.
URVINABAY,ISABELAISLANDComposed of five coalesced volcanoes, Isabela is the largest island in the
Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred in 2015.Herewewill seelarge land iguanas, finches, and if lucky, a giant tortoise or two. In 1954, the intrusion of magma
below one of the island’s volcanoes caused part of the bay to be uplifted some 6 meters, and today we can walk through the remains of what was once a thriving underwaterreef.
