awaii experiences warm temperatures…especially during the summer months.

What better treat can you get than a shave ice?! Did you notice that I didn’t say “snow cone”

because a snow cone is different than a shave ice. The biology of shave (not shaved) ice consists of soft and fluffy ice, ice that’s shaved as it’s ordered

and is not crushed ice and there are many different flavors to choose from. In addition, you also have the option to add vanilla ice cream and/or azuki

beans to the bottom of your shave ice.

There is a particular method to shaving the ice to get the light and fluffy texture. The magical

technique includes a large block of ice turning on a machine while someone uses a sharp blade to shave the ice block in even strokes. Once enough

ice has been shaven, all of the shavings are gathered in a cylindrical cone shaped cup and the

next step is to add the flavor to your shave ice. There are more than 70 different syrup flavors to choose from. The syrup flavors range from fruity to candy to gum to cookie flavors. You can also

top off your one-of-a-kind shave ice creation with condensed milk drizzled on the top. There are

shave ice shops all around the state of Hawaii. You should try shave ice from different shops to narrow down the most appealing shave ice to your palate.

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a non-profi t organization established by Soldiers for Soldiers.

For the reason each year from 1 March – 15 May, AER has its annual fundraising campaign. Anyone may donate even though only Active

Duty and Retired Soldiers are eligible for assistance. As a non-profi t, AER is supported solely by the generous donations from the community and repayment of AER loans.

AER assists with more than just rent and POV repairs. Some unknown categories are Wounded Warrior Comfort Grants in which some Soldiers wounded in theater and medivaced to medical treatment facilities are given a $500 grant to

help them with comfort items while they are treated. Since we went to war in 2003, AER has distributed over $3 million dollars in grants to

over 16,000 Soldiers. AER also has a scholarship program for children and spouses of Soldiers. In 2014, AER distributed $8 million dollars to over

3500 Soldier dependents.

In 2014 on Schofi eld Barracks, AER distributed $2.1 million dollars to 1418 Soldiers. This year

our campaign goal is $285,157.70. Anyone may donate: civilians, contractors, businesses and of course Soldiers and retired military. Other

branches of the military may also donate to AER if they so desire.

THE SPECIAL NEEDS ACCOMMODATION PROCESSAs parents, we all want our children to meet their full potential. Enrolling your children into group activities, learning centers, organized sports, and other events will not only encourage social development but also help promote inclusion within the youth community. Parents, you play a very special role in making sure your children are afforded equal opportunity to thrive! So, SNAP into gear and learn how the Special Needs Accommodation Process (SNAP) can help you!

WHAT IS SNAP? THE SPECIAL NEEDS Accommodation Process is a regulatory process to assess requirements that support children/youth with special needs requesting child care/youth supervision options in Army Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS). The SNAP team is a multi-disciplinary team established to determine what accommodations need to be made for children with special needs, in order to be successful in their placements at the CYSS programs.

The members of the SNAP team include the parents and or guardians, a representative from Army Community Service (ACS) Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), Army Public Health Nurse (APHN), Child Youth and School Services designee to include center directors, and other appropriate medical personnel. Parents are vital members to the SNAP team and participation is integral to the overall success of their children in CYSS programs. Parents help by providing the SNAP team with a brief history and outline of their child’s current symptoms, concerns, and actions taken. Parents may also be asked to provide information such as medical documentation, statements of illnesses, allergies, and copies of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

HOW DOES THE SNAP PROCESS WORK?Parents will complete a CYSS Health Screening tool #1, which will then be reviewed by the APHN. In some instances, a medical action plan (MAP) and/or Special Diet Statement will be provided to the parent as needed. The MAP will be completed by the child’s physician and will state your child’s diagnosis and any required accommodations. Once complete, these forms will be turned into Parent Central Services, who will forward the completed forms to the APHN and EFMP for review and recommendations. If the APHN determines a Full SNAP, then a SNAP meeting must be scheduled. EFMP will contact the Family and appropriate SNAP team members and set up the SNAP appointment.

At the meeting the child’s needs are discussed, along with recommendations of a developmentally appropriate environment; considering any health, developmental, physical, social, emotional, learning, and behavioral issues

that affect your child. Also addressed at the meeting will be the expectations of the service to be provided by the CYSS staff. The goal is to ensure that the child has the very best experience at CYSS and that staff are trained to provide the care that a particular child needs.

Some things to keep in mind regarding a SNAP meeting are:

• Please arrive ten minutes early

• Please be ready to discuss your child’s medical history, as this will assist the team in placing your child within CYSS

• Please bring appropriate documentation such as copies of your child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and or Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) if he or she has one

• Expect 5-8 SNAP team members to be present

• SNAP meetings generally last 30-45 minutes

• Please remember it is the responsibility of each parent or guardian to follow up and provide requested information to the SNAP team

SNAP Meetings are held at either Schofi eld Barracks (SB) or Aliamanu Military Reservation (AMR).

• Schofi eld Barracks SNAP team meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month located at SB Army Community Service (Bldg. 2091).

• AMR SNAP team meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month located at AMR CYSS Parent Central Services (Bldg. 1782).
