Quakerdale is thrilled to bring this first class line up to the area. You in the Cedar Valley and surrounding communities were chosen to be our ‘kick off ’ audience with future events anticipated in Ames, Des Moines or other areas of the state. I personally invite you and your friends to our first Discovery Series event and look forward to seeing you there” - Executive Director, Robert Talbot

Bankshot , Snowbank, SlamdunkBroer Center “One of the most significant changes in the entire Quakerdale Program” - Joan Hoff, 1982
You are familiar with our Broer Center on the New Providence campus. You know it has been around since 1976. You know it recently had a ribbon cutting ceremony in July to officially celebrate the renovation project. Were you aware of the building’s history and how it all began? This picture of the young boy on the left is a good place to begin. Now most of you would see a winter scene with a young man shooting hoops in the frigid cold. Only M. R. Whitehead saw the picture in a totally different light according to Joan Hoff in her book “Because Someone Cared.” She describes it this way:
One cold night during the winter Richard Whitehead drove past the outdoor basketball court. To his astonishment he saw a boy, bundled up in a heavy coat, gloves and stocking cap, shooting baskets under the light. It was very cold, and the wind made it a very unpleasant evening
to be out.”
Whitehead envisions “An enclosed place for the kids to play”The idea of a multi-purpose building to provide a winter shelter from the wind for recreation was formed. You can only guess what happened next. A little mention to the right person led to more conversation, a plan, and the word was heard by people who had a heart for giving. Those hearing the call happened to be the Hawley Welfare Foundation and the Flying Farmers of Iowa. You know the formula: a vision + volunteers + donations = a miracle for a lifetime. It was completed in 1976 for use as a ceramics shop, wood shop, and various end uses.
Today at the Broer CenterWith the new addition, which used the same formula to complete, the renovated facility will expand into several new uses including:
• Classrooms for the Promise Academy students• Kitchen facility to prepare meals for students and special events• A commons area for students and conference areas for special
groups (ie. wedding receptions, business meetings etc.)• Facility for our future Culinary Program, utilizing veggies and fish from the Sustainable Ag program• Home court and practice facility for Quakerdale Eagles prep basketball program• Special events like our well received Chik-fil-A Leadercast, Promise Academy Awards/Ribbon cutting/
Open House, and the Recognition Dinner for the Lennox/Quakerdale golf committee
You can see how this multi-purpose building provides our students and community with a functional facility for a wide variety of activities. You make this all possible. We are grateful you provide your support to Quakerdale. You are encouraged to stop by and visit the Broer Center, or should we say, your “Slamdunk” to help keep the kids warm while they play.
Thank you.,

25th Annual Lennox/Quakerdale Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament Raises $120,000
There are no words that describe what the Lennox family and its group of committed volunteers have
accomplished throughout the years for youth and families served by Quakerdale. The largest check in the 25-year history of the Lennox/Quakerdale Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament was presented to Quakerdale on Thursday, June 14 at the tournament banquet. The check totaled $120,000. To date the Lennox/Quakerdale golf tournament has raised $1,378,500!
The tournament was pleased to welcome Dan Forsman, a member of the PGA Champions Tour. Forseman conducted a golf clinic and spoke at the banquet. Other celebrities that participated in the event included Dr. Tom Davis, former Iowa and Drake men’s basketball coach; retired ISU head men’s basketball coach Johnny Orr; former Minnesota Viking and NFL Hall of Famer Paul Krause, and Dan Winters, WHO Channel 13 Reporter and Anchor.
The evening concluded as former Promise Home resident, Nikki, spoke about how her time spent at Quakerdale has made a difference in her life today. “Quakerdale has helped to shape me into the woman that I am now. I was able to find God and am planning to use my knowledge and experience to help other kids like me,” she said.A special thanks to everyone who helped make the event a success! Especially, Quakerdale extends appreciation to Lennox International Inc. and Lennox Industries for their dedicated partnership, the golf committee, volunteers, and participants.
The 26th annual Lennox/Quakerdale golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday, June 13, 2013.

Thirty one men and women from across the Midwest walked away as certified equine therapists.
One, two, three, THROW! Quakerdale Wolfe Ranch staff and volunteers broke the record for the number of yellow Ritchie balls sold at the annual Downunder Horsemanship Walkabout Tour. Annually, the tour features world renowned horse trainer, clinician, and competitor Clinton Anderson and is sponsored by Ritchie
Industries, an automatic waterer manufacturer.
Ritchie named Quakerdale the charity of choice and extended an opportunity for Quakerdale to sell the yellow balls for the ‘ball toss’ at the end of the event. Exactly 1,017 yellow balls were thrown into the arena and those who made it closest to the stake won prizes. Through the ball toss and a generous donation from Ritchie, a total of $12,670 was donated to the Wolfe Ranch Life Enrichment Center.

Teenage girls succeed through Quakerdale’s Weekend Offender Program
For almost five years, Quakerdale has provided a successful program for adolescent girls called the Weekend Offender Program. The girls, who are referred by Juvenile Court Services, are on informal or formal probation for violations of the law . Services are designed to reduce crime and recidivism and keep the girls in their home communities. Through service learning, group and individual skill building activities, staff work with the girls on developing skills, strategies, and a change-up plan to help them stay away from delinquent activity.
Girls who participate in the program have shared positive feedback. One girl said her change-up plan was to “change her playmates and her playground” which spurred positive discussion with her peers who also live in an environment where crime is abundant. This helped the group strengthen their resolve to move forward positively.
Last year, Quakerdale served 81 girls who represented 14 Iowa counties.
Of the 81 girls who participated in the program the last year 75.4 % did not re-offend, 71.9% did not violate probation within 6 months of attending the program, and 71.1% were not placed in an out-of-home placement.
We are pleased with these outcomes and the opportunity to support the girls through this unique program!
Brave steps forward
There are key moments in life where we take intentional steps to create a bright and beautiful future. At the Waterloo campus two girls recently displayed their inner strength and confidence to succeed.
After a lot of hard work and a committment to making positive choices one resident took a step in faith and made the decision to get baptized. Another young woman graduated from high school and will soon be leaving to attend Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids. Congratulations to these two ladies and all our residents for taking brave steps forward each day!
Golfers raise $15,000 for families and youth in Western Iowa
On Monday, June 4, over 60 golfers congregated together at the Carroll Country Club to participate in the 21st Annual Quakerdale of Manning Golf Outing. The event raises funds each year to benefit Quakerdale’s Manning Campus.
After the round, golfers enjoyed a silent auction, social hour and program in the clubhouse. Auston, former Quakerdale resident, emceed the program, Golf Pro Paul Tigges handed out awards, and former Quakerdale resident Andrea spoke about her life before and after Quakerdale.
“Quakerdale helped me become the person I am today. It took a couple of years for me to appreciate what they taught me and I have changed for the better. Now I have a little girl and am using the skills that I learned there to be the best mom I can be.
The program concluded with the announcement of the final amount raised, which totaled $15,000. Thank you to the Development Council of Western Iowa, staff and volunteers for their efforts to make this event a success!

A Summer of FUN! The Quakerdale Mobile Camp Program added two new locations (Carroll & Oskaloosa) to its tour this year providing seven weeks of FREE day camp to kids across Iowa!
The Ranch hosted two additional camps, a horse camp and a My Little Pony day camp for
girls. Youth were able to ride horses, make new friends, and the girls enjoyed their day beautifying horses and crafting jewelry!

Spiritual Life UpdateA Week at Church Camp
Youth from the Promise Academy and the residential program in New Providence had the opportunity to spend a week at Camp Quaker Heights. The recreation, food, and friendship at camp provided an excellent backdrop for the daily chapel sessions, small group devotional times, and personal reflection.
We were also able to send two youth from an area community to camp as well as youth from our own ministries.

Each of us, regardless of the size of our estate, has the opportunity to provide a legacy for future lives. Beginning with our founder, Josiah White, we have been blessed at Quakerdale by many who have carefully planned in order to provide for children entrusted to our care, through an arrangement in their estate plan. Some of our benefactors were financially wealthy…some were not. Some bequests have been very large and others quite small. No matter what the size, all have made a difference for the children and families we serve!
There are so many ways to leave your legacy. You can give • afixedsumofmoney,• specifycertainproperty,or• giveapercentageoftheresidueofyourestate.
You can give through your Will or through the beneficiary declaration of a life insurance policy, retirement plan, certificate of deposit and/or annuity. You can establish a gift annuity or charitable trust which allows you or a loved one to receive income for a period of years or throughout your lifetime. You can also memorialize or honor someone through your estate plan gift.
We would be happy to visit with you, at no cost or obligation, about any of these options. Please take some time to think about how you might leave your legacy. You can contact me by calling 641-497-5294 or emailing me at [email protected]. Your gifts are important today, and they will be no less important after you are gone! What will be your legacy?
