Porpoise Protectors: DISCOVERY
WELCOME TO PORPOISE PROTECTORS!
Welcome to WDC’s Porpoise Protectors Award for children 8 years old and under. You will learn about dolphins and porpoises and what you can do to help them.
Did you Know? There are 90 different types of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Only 7 of these are porpoises; the porpoise family look very similar to
dolphins and are hard to tell apart. Porpoises are just a bit smaller, have blunt shaped noses, small dorsal fins and flat-shaped teeth. Examples are Harbour porpoise, Dall’s porpoise and Spectacled porpoise.

instrument!
make an egg box whale
Porpoise Protectors: DISCOVERY
Cut out one section of an egg box. You might need an adult to help you. Paint it blue and set it to one side to dry.
Draw and cut out your whale’s flippers and tail on to the card. If you don’t have blue card, you can colour or paint it in blue.
Stick the flippers, tail and eyes on to your whale. If you don’t have googly eyes, you can draw them on. Ask an adult to make a hole in the top of the whale’s head (blowhole).
Fold the pipe cleaner in half and push it through the hole. Twist it so it can’t come back through the hole.
Bend the ends of the pipe cleaners to look like a whale’s spout!
You need:• Egg box• Paint and paintbrush• Glue or double-sided
tape• Pipe cleaner• Scissors• Card• Felt tip pen• Googly eyes (optional)
make an origami whaleYou will need:
• A piece of square paper
• Scissors• Pen
Step 1:Place your paper with a point at the bottom. Fold in half from left to right and unfold again.
Step 2:Fold the lower left and right sides so they meet at the middle crease and press new folds. You should now have a kite shape.
Step 3:Now fold the top point down to meet the top edges of the sides you folded in step 2. It will now look like a diamond.
Step 4:Fold your origami in half and crease well
Step 5:Turn your whale onto its side.Fold the narrow end up and cut carefully down the middle to make a tail fluke.Draw eyes and a smile. Now you can decorate your whale or write a message on him!

MAKE A RECYCLED WHALE PLANT POT
Porpoise Protectors: DISCOVERY
You’ll need an adult’s
help to make this whale!
Around the world 60 million plastic bottles are thrown away every day! If they get to the sea they can hurt whales and dolphins. Why not turn one into a whale plant pot?
You need:• A large plastic bottle• Sandpaper• Acrylic paint• Paintbrush• Scissors• Thick felt tip pen
Use the felt tip pen to mark where to cut out the whale. You might like to draw a template for the dorsal fin and tail flukes on paper first.
Ask an adult to cut out the whale and sand down any rough edges with sandpaper.
Paint the whale white all over. Once it is dry add other colours, like black for an orca, grey for a humpback whale or blue for a blue whale!
Don’t forget to add eyes and a mouth!
Finally you can fill the whale with soil and add plants or seeds!
Spot the difference and colour in!
