OvErviEwNearly 795, 000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability. However, only about 2-3% of patients receive the FDA approved treatment of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) for acute stroke. This is in part due to delay in patient arrival. Studies have shown that arrival to the hospital via Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with pre-hospital notification was associated with rapid triage, achieving target benchmark door times for brain imaging and a higher incidence of t-PA administration when compared to private transport. As a New York State Certified Stroke Center, Winthrop provides continuing medical education in an effort to improve the care and outcomes of stroke patients. Dr. Koyfman will focus on identification of stroke risks and acute stroke symptoms, determining the last known well time and onset of symptoms, recognizing nearest designated stroke centers, importance of establishing pre-hospital notification and recognition of acute stroke treatment target time windows.

LEarning and PErfOrManCE ObjECTivEsAt the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Identify acute stroke as onset of symptoms within 6 hrs of ED arrival • Identify risk factors for stroke• Recognize acute stroke treatment window target times (IV/IA t-PA and mechanical retrieval)• Determine last known well time (LKWT) and discovery/onset time• Recognize signs/symptoms of acute stroke (i.e: F.A.S.T, Sudden severe headache, vision loss…) • Perform the pre-hospital Cincinnati Stroke Scale (CSS)• Determine nearest Stroke Center and establish pre-hospital notification
