It is in the human nature to compare of what one possesses with each other. This
attitude that we develop in our childhood continues to affect our approach and social
growth in life. This comparison at times leads to a healthy competition and at others
to jealousy and frustration. A few bad men here and there followed by some bumping
thuds make us believe that if we do not want to suffer any more, we must follow the
righteous course of positivity instead of burning ourselves in jealousy.
Positive approach leads to the ultimate success, the industrialists of this area,
have always rejoiced the situations we find ourselves in, even after withdrawal of
concessions on 31st March 2010 and partial restoration of the same in December
2010. In whatever way we look at it, we find ourselves in the list of favorite children as
compared to others who remained out of the facilities extended to us in 2003.
The government on their part has always responded to our requests (demands)
in a very healthy and accommodating spirit, and when we have the support of the
authorities who matter, we can work with ease. Let us acknowledge with gratitude,
the efforts made by one and all, to see that we are comfortable. Here is a stage where
we do not have to ask as to what has the government done for us. We should be able
to say as to what we are doing for the government to promote social togetherness
and responsibility in the masses.
Our up-bringing also teaches us to give back to society in whatever measure, to
we can. There are no bindings on this account. giving out favors under pressure is not
fruitful. Giving out of pleasure, even the least you can is good for the benefactor and
the beneficiary. We have come across instances where our members are contributing
for the benefit of the masses as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. A case
in point relates to Torrent Pharmaceuticals discussed in this issue.
We are also aware that similar activities are being carried out by others but are
not reported. Let us now take a leaf from the Torrent and join page after page to tell
others that we do not lag in fulfilling our corporate social responsibility .

here could not have been a better time for
BBNIA having reached a major milestone Twith the much-awaited project CETP
(Common Effluent Treatment Plant) receiving Govt.
of India's approval. Our special thanks to various
officers of the Himachal Government, BBN
Development Authority, and of course the
members of BBNIA who worked together to
fructify this Rs. 80.50 crores project.
This multi-pronged project involves setting up
the CETP, establishment of Skill Development
Centre, and widening and strengthening of roads.
The SPV for this project Baddi Infrastructure Limited
set up jointly by BBNIA and BBNDA is in place, and
we are on our way to create a better and clean
Baddi with its municipal and industrial waste
management through CETP and improved road
infrastructure, while the need for skilled manpower
would be met through the Skill Development
Center. Let us respond to our part of commitment
at the earliest.

Planned growth for aSustainable Society
P res ideen t -E lec t wr i tes :
January 2011 3A winner is one who accepts his failures and mistakes, picks up the pieces, and continues striving to reach his goals.
lanned growth is the essence of
civilization and prosperity. India has not Pshown foresight in planning execution
and deliverance as compared to their
counterparts who have risen from a similar
situation in lesser times. When priorities are not
properly assessed and organized, i.e. planning
is improper, designs require frequent
modifications, completion get delayed time and
again leading to cost escalations and
inconvenience to people, it causes confusion
and crises. And, we Indians are not only smart
crises managers but are also equally smart in
inadvertently creating pressure situations too.
Examples of poor planning are newly
constructed fly over at Zeerakpur which has
given relief to a few but inconveniences to
many. Same is with us in BBN area. Time is now
for us to plan and grow according to the
convenience of people unmindful of their
political attachments. Let us learn to rise above
politics and be proud of the nation (and not the
party) we represent.
Planned growth of any society or an area is
essential to ensure that as they grow, they do
not start bursting at the seams within or
outside the period for which development is
planned. For us we have BBNDA, planning to
show the shape this area will look like, say after
a period of twenty years or so.
But what are we going to do in between
the period till the plan is decided, agreed,
started and finished? And if the benefits of the
planned development are to accrue on the
death end of the period of planning, what do
we, working at the present stage stand to gain?
Is the planning intended to benefit the future
generation alone? Possibly not.
Any planning need to touch the very heart
of people making them grow as the planning
broadens. It means, each one being catered to
becomes a part of it and helps in development.
But unfortunately, the implementation of a plan
is considered as the sole responsibility of the
government with the result, we prefer to watch
from a distance and complain of things not
done. This has led to a change in the thought
process of the implementers who now prefer to
make the beneficiaries a part of the planning to
make it user- driven and user-friendly.
The number of development plans with us,
the BBNIA, other than those of the BBNDA,
may they be relating to Working Men's Hostel,
CETP, Skill Development Centre, Baddi heights
for Trade Centre plus Club House, Mini Tool
Room and even development of internal roads
of industrial connectivity, have all been
designed as user driven.
It is highly appealing when we know that a
project offered to us is “user driven” but we do
not perhaps appreciate the significance of the
term “user driven”. It implies that we also
contribute in financial terms to make us feel the
ownership of the project we perceive, plan and
implement with the help of the government
who remain as the biggest contributors.
We are also being involved by the BBNDA in
implementing the plans which are more as
area-centric rather than industry-centric.
Progress of industry should match the progress
of the people in the area as both are inter-
related. We are ready to take up social
responsibilities according to the need of the
hour. Let us be the partners to progress of our
country through this small area called BBN to
reap fruits of total development so as to leave
an easier place for the coming generations.
When we join hands and make a circle to
progress together, we can encompass even the
sky and say that even the sky is not the limit.
C O V E R S T O R Y
e have been talking about
Industrial Infrastructure Up-Wgradation Scheme (IIUS) in our
earlier issues of Disha with a promise to
highlight its contents.
BBNDA along with BBNIA worked at
tandem for CETP from conceptualization of
the project, which is now almost at the
verge of implementation. Project approval
from the Govt of India in shortest period of
time was a herculean task. Commendable
Job done by the Officers of the State, Govt
of India and BBNIA for getting the project
sanctioned which has three components
mentioned below. This is one of the biggest
ever cleaning act for an industrial belt at the
pharma hub of Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh,
in Himachal Pradesh.
The project announced for us as a part
of IIUS scheme of the government of
India covered three aspects:
nA combined waste water treatment
system, a common effluent treatment plant
in short called CETP.
nRoads in the industrial area to be
widened, uplifted, strengthened and even
constructed where necessary to match
with global medicine producing standards.
nProviding of Skill Development centre.
CETP is the predominant part of the
combined project involving bulk of
expenditure and before we go into it, let us
speak about the involvement of funds for
each of the sub-projects including
administrative and fixed assets allocations.
The project could not take shape without
help of the state Govt. who agreed to
provide 126 bighas of land and 7 crores of
capital for the project.
First thing first, we owe our special
thanks to the State Government.
The cost of the project as a whole:
The Government of India, Ministry of
Commerce & Industry has conveyed their
final approval under the scheme on 19
November 2010 for a project costing Rs.
80.50 crores to cover the following works:
n Providing CETP Rs. 53.80 crores
nSkill Development Centre Rs. 8.10 crores
nWidening & Strengthening of Roads
Rs.17.24 crores
nAdministrative expenses & Fixed Assets
Rs. 1.36 crores

Power PointINDUSTRIAL InfrastructureUp-gradation Scheme
One of the biggest ever cleanup drives for an industrial belt atthe pharma hub of Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh, inHimachal Pradesh.
Funding for the above is to be provided
by the central government (58.28 crores),
state government (7.00 crores), and
industries contribution (15.22 crores) to be
provided in cash or by raising of Term Loan.
All the three parts of the IIUS are of great
importance to the industry in the area who
is likely to be the biggest gainers. If we once
analyze and agree to come forward and
help with our contribution fixed at the
minimal and absolutely necessary level the
desired results can be achieved.
CETP- Anticipated fall out
The initial thought process of cleaning
BBN started with Central Pollution Control
Board describing the area as close to being
severely polluted. High Court of Himachal
Pradesh taking suo-moto action on this
news desired to know as to how the
government intended to meet the
challenge.
The state government, thereafter,
directed the BBNDA to come up with a plan
to de-pollute Baddi and the latter requested
the central government to assist the state to
contain pollution by providing funds under
IIUS. However, as the scheme is available on
PPP basis to be implemented through a
special purpose vehicle (SPV), BBNIA was
offered the responsibility to rise to the
occasion for benefit of Industry.
President, Shri Rajender Guleria who is
always quick to procure what is best for the
industry in the area, agreed by accepting
the responsibility knowing fully well that
CETP will be utilized to its capacity by
industrial houses that need it the most. He
also has the backing of other members
because of which the contributions
required from them for the project can be
raised.
And that is how, we are into it.
State government earmarked 126.17
bighas of land for location of CETP and its
possession was taken over by the Baddi
Infrastructure in November 2010 as
reported in our last issue.
The special feature of this initiative is
that the scheme is implemented through a
special purpose vehicle (SPV) at the
individual cluster level so as to ensure that
the infrastructure upgrade/development is
user-driven.
BBNIA, in collaboration with BBNDA,
geared itself by forming SPV in the name of
M/s Baddi Infrastructure (BIL). Shri Rajinder
Guleria as Director of BIL took up work to
prepare DPR for setting up CETP in
consultation with M/s UPL Group for
presentation before a committee headed
by Ms. Harider Heera, Additional Chief
Secretary (Industries) and other members
drawn from the government and from
BBNIA. The DPR was approved in
November 2010. Proactive role was played
by Mrs. Sarojni Thakur, Additional Chief
Secretary (Science & Technology) – cum-
Chairman PCB, Mr. Nageen Nanda,
Member Secretary Pollution Control Board
and Mrs. Meera Mohanti CEO, BBNDA.
As a further step towards setting up of
CETP, the Government of Himachal Pradesh
by their Order dated 27October2010
authorized BIL as the sole agency to collect,
deposit, process and dispose sewerage,
municipal and industrial effluents in the
prescribed manner on payment of fees as
may be imposed after approval of the state
government.
Accordingly, BIL is required to ensure
scientific collection and disposal of such
municipal, sewerage and industrial
effluents and wastes in Baddi, Barotiwala
and Nalagarh areas and also to ensure that
no person having residence or industrial,
commercial or any enterprises including
shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers,
retailers, hawkers, rehriwalas etc. in this
area throw or deposit or dispose off
sewerage, municipal waste and industrial
effluent or resort to any unscientific disposal
of such sewerage and industrial effluents in
streams, wells, rivers, rivulets, public drains,
roads, road sides and any open or private
places or in any other manner except
through BIL.
A reading of the above order clearly
devolves responsibility on BIL for proper
upkeep of BBN and obviously, if the orders
are implemented in letter and spirit, BBN will
notice a sea-change in its living standards.
As per estimates of the pollution control
board, effluent treatment capacity of the
CETP will be around 23 million liter per day.
We can well imagine that if this much
quantity is removed and treated, the stain
of being the most polluted area will be
washed out from the face of Baddi.
C O V E R S T O R Y
5January 2011No matter what you've done or haven't done, the opportunity to do more,to be more will always be there… never be satisfied!
The Government of India has already
sanctioned Rs. 17.48 crores in favor of BIL
and the funds are likely to be released
shortly into their accounts.
The Board of Directors, BIL had fixed
criteria of contribution by the industries
based on the parameters of total
investment of the company and total
discharge of the effluent. Till the time of
reporting, BIL had received a contribution of
Rs. 26.56 lakhs from only 28 industries.
Skill Development Center
Govt. of India has constituted a
National Skill Development Board and a
corpus of Rs 1000 cr has been placed at the
disposal of this organization to stimulate
skill development in the country thereby
contributing value addition to the economy
in terms of trained manpower.
Skill development center would work for
skill development and skill up gradation by
regular and modular courses specially
designed for the requirements of Textiles,
Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, Packaging,
Plastic Moulding, Automobiles FMCG etc.
This will take care of skill gap and will lead to
productivity enhancement and promote
local employment. As we all have felt the
difficulty in finding skilled labor in this area at
a reasonable cost, the announcement to
provide one skill development center for
Baddi was highly appreciated. The
curriculum for this center is being designed
to meet requirement of skilled workers in
different fields of interest to most of us. The
system of admission at the center, subjects
to be taught, duration of each program
system of administrative control, fee
structure and the rest related topics are
being considered by a group of industrialists
under the able guidance of Shri Rajender
Guleria.
The sk i l l deve lopment cente r
sanctioned as a part of IIUS is to be
constructed by BBNDA and BBNIA as
partners. As with the CETP, the concept,
design and outlay of the Center was
approved in November 2010. This work is
likely to be given final shape after obtaining
accreditat ion from the concerned
educational authorities. It is sincerely hoped
that our problem for skilled workers will now
be met within and many young students in
Himachal Pradesh can get employment
straight from the campus.
Internal Roads
We suffer of inter-connectivity within
Baddi and even the roads that are available
are narrow and in a bad shape. Efforts
made by BBNDA in this direction suffered
due to shortage of funds. With coverage of
strengthening the roads under IIUS, these
roads will be uplifted to global standards.
Widening and strengthening of the
roads, covers 16.34 Kms of three internal
roads involving an estimated cost of Rs. 18
crores. Under this project, the roads would
be widened, uplifted, strengthened and
even constructed where necessary. Proper
drainage, footpaths and truck lay byes
would be provided.
The CEO, BBNDA informed that the
contractor entrusted with the work shall be
made responsible for its up keep for the next
three years from the date of completion. It
may be added here for information of our
members that IIUS was launched by the
Government of India in 2003 as a central
sector scheme to enhance international
competitiveness of the domestic industry by
providing quality infrastructure through
public private partnership (PPP) in existing
functional clusters. We notice that all
facilities presently being offered by the
government at the state and (or) the center
require the beneficiaries to partly finance
and execute. You will find similar instances
for other works offered to us, referred to
elsewhere in this issue.
Let us rise to this latest approach of the
government and avail the facilities which
are important for our welfare and progress.
6 January 2011Time is the coin of your life, It is the only coin you have and onlyyou can determine how it will be spent.
he State Govt. in recent past has imposed Entry Tax on many items/commodities to which there was a sharp reaction from the
Industry. As per the Govt. reason of imposition of this tax is primarily to boost local industry as well as to garner some revenue Tfrom the units indulging in Stock Transfers of their entire production thereby causing a loss to state exchequer. BBNIA had taken
up the said issue with the Hon'ble CM directly on whose directions the rates of tax on most of the items were rationalized, the entry tax
was stopped to be collected at the barriers, the industry was assured to allow the input credit of the entry tax paid to be set off against
payment of CST/VAT. However, except the decision of stoppage of collection of Entry Tax at the barriers rest of the decision are pending
on account of imposition of code of conduct due to elections to PRI/Local Bodies. Though the effect of these relief, if notified is yet to be
assessed , there is another news gaining ground that state govt. is planning to impose Entry Tax on Pharma Raw Material, which is main
ingredient for the entire Pharma Industry in the state. As per the President, Himachal Drugs Manufacturers Association , Mr. Sanjay
Guleria, the survival of the pharma industry will be under threat if any such move is made and as such has requested the Himachal Chief
Minister not to levy any additional tax like entry tax etc., to enable the small units in the state comprising of 80 per cent of the industrial
set up to survive. It will be a matter of wait & watch till the Govt. responds to the aspirations of this particular sector.

The trip to Japan has confirmed that
Indian entrepreneurs are smartest,

played a pivotal role by giving a global

opening the corridors of technology and

We know that their’s was the country

infrastructure development and economic
growth recorded by them soon after world
war.
Japan is a country worth admiring for its
infrastructure – in terms of roads, civic
amenities, water management and mass
rapid transportation system.
Readers will perhaps remember that it
was reported in Disha, December 2010
issue under the subject of “Correcting Trade

Ours was a group of 25 Industrialists of

As an introduction to Japan's customs
and systems, I may add that the Japanese,
as we all know, are short in stature, large at
heart and highly sharp in the head.
The most impressive thing about them
is that they do not boast about their
achievements, are extremely humble and
polite, soft spoken and focused that at

day celebrations. Lack of moral values is
causing many serious problems.
Thanks to globalization, we are now
prone to commercialism which means that
we want to acquire all that is the best in
materialistic world, use what is convenient
in operation, wear what is branded. In short
we want everything that is western even
when we cannot afford.
The speed with which we wish to be a
global competitor is causing erosion of
human resources like coal, gas and water to
near extinction. We are not even
considering the resultant pollution we are
adding to the atmosphere that may cause
the end of our own children.
In the words of Sh. Simran Joidka,
Assistant Professor in Economics at
Chandigarh, “Globalization is an inexorable
force; we must live in harmony to grow”. It
has now provided us with a better banking
system, a mature capital market, a spate of
IT professionals, skilled technocrats, and big
lobalization is a process of social,
political, economic and cultural
integration of nations. No Gcountry is a stranger to the other because of
the available means of communications
and is mutually inter-dependent for growth.
The developed countries and the
developing countries are vying with each
other to outdo the other and the backward
countries of the world are being provided
with sufficient means to tide over their
backwardness. Consequent to this, an
amalgamation of different cultures is taking
place which require examination of the
merits and demerits of globalization.
The S ta te i s w i thdrawing i t s
participation in various activities of social
relevance leaving the field open to
privatization. This has in turn increased the
gap between the rich and the poor because
of a tendency of private players to earn
more at lesser cost. Employment insecurity
in the wake of privatization has curtailed
equal opportunity to all as was the case in
operation under State's control.
The selective deployment of workforce
is resulting in increase in un-employment.
Outsourcing of work to other countries for
better financial gains is adding to increase in
production simultaneously resulting in loss
of local employment.

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an
American Company (Ford Motors)
decided to have a canoe race on the
Missouri River. Both teams practiced long
and hard to reach their peak performance
before the race. On the big day, the
Japanese won by a mile. The Americans,
very discouraged and depressed, decided
to investigate the reason for the
crushing defeat. A team made up of senior
management members was formed to
investigate and recommend appropriate
action.
Their conclusion was the Japanese had
8 people rowing and 1 person steering,
while the American team had 7 people
steering and 2 people rowing. Feeling a
deeper study was in order; American
management hired a consulting company
and paid them a large amount of
money for a second opinion. They advised,
of course, that too many people were
steering the boat, while not enough people
were rowing. Not sure of how to utilize that
information, but wanting to prevent
another loss to the Japanese, the rowing
team's management structure was totally
reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 2 area
steering superintendents and 1 assistant
superintendent steering manager.
They also implemented a new performance
system that would give the 2 people rowing
the boat greater incentive to work harder. It
was called the “Rowing Team Quality First
Program” with meetings, dinners and free
pens for the rowers.
There was discussion of getting new
paddles, canoes and other equipment,
extra vacation days for practices and
bonuses. The pension program was
trimmed to “equal the competition” and
some of the resultant savings were
channeled into morale boosting programs
and team work posters. Next year, the
Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated,

quite a few other similar lakes in the state was not

On the same lines of adventure tourism, the
Department of Tourism & Civil Aviation is, in
collaboration of Heli Taxi operators, introducing Heli
Taxi services from Shimla and other destinations. This
will help tourists to reach and feel greater heights
which till recent times were like 'distant dreams' to

Mr. Arun Sharma, Director Tourism & Civil

develop tourism in isolation so the need of the hour is
to integrate the efforts of all the departments
concerned so that facility like good roads, water,
electricity, good air connectivity, well planned urban
and rural centers can be created.”
This is what he calls as 'total tourism' where every
department that can contribute to generate
adequate tourist facility joins in. The term
'departments concerned' used by him possibly
means all others who can help in promoting tourism
and includes entrepreneurs also.
The tourism department has proposed to

It is perhaps time, where the tourism
department earmarks cer tain un-explored

This can be achieved by extending to them

CASE IN POINT
Outcome ofG-20 MeetingChina is likely to emerge as the world's largest economy leaving behindAmerica but India is not far behind and is in the race to become a dominantworld economy as it was 200 years ago.
16 January 2011Confidence comes naturally with success but...Success comes only to those, who are confident.
20 meeting at Seoul 2010 is indicative of
shifting of power to the East where the
largest emerging economies are taking Gover from the old “rich club” of the Group of Seven.
Europe and North America burdened with the global
downturn in debts and facing recession were face to
face with Asia and most of Africa who were not
affected by recession. China is likely to emerge as the
world's largest economy leaving behind America but
India is not far behind and is in the race to become a
dominant world economy as it was 200 years ago.
Leaders from the Group of 20 said they would
work to tackle global economies “tensions and
vulnerabilities”. In short, following topics were
decided/ and or deliberated upon:
nGlobal imbalances
Explore “indicative guidelines” to measure large
current account imbalances, in consultation with the
IMF so that rifts between export-rich countries and
debt ridden consumer nations are minimized.
nCurrencies
Steps to maintain market-determined exchange
rates to avoid competitive devaluations by taking
“carefully designed macro-prudential measures”
code for capital controls.
nFinancial regulations
Agreed to raise the quantity and quality of bank
capital and endorsed to tighten supervision on
market and reduce reliance on credit rating agencies.
nTrade
Pledged not to pursue protectionist policies and
to work towards concluding trade liberalization talks
as per Doha deliberations.
nIMF
Endorsed a package of reforms for the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reflect a shift in
balance of global economic power. This means 6
percent shift of voting shares at the Fund to
developing countries such as China.
Obvious from above is the fact that the world
leaders met; agreed that their intentions were good
and the dialogue should continue.
Nothing of real substance was achieved towards
containment of yuan or for devising a system for
controlling trade imbalance- that export by a country
to another bears some relation to its imports there
from, and steps are taken to allow equal competition
for each country to participate in international
trading by adopting an equitable value of their
currency on a global pattern.
We may have to wait for the Finance Ministers
Conference or the next G-20 meet to get results
beneficial to each nation. May be.

Rule 1. Life is not fair, get used to it.
Rule 2. The world doesn't care about your
self esteem. The world will expect you to
accomplish some thing before you feel
good about yourself.
Rule 3. You will not make $60,000 a year
right out of high school. You won't be a vice-
president with a car phone until you earn
both.
Rule 4. If you think your teacher is tough,
wait until you get a boss.
Rule 5. Flipping burgers are not beneath
your dignity. Your grand parents had a
different word for burger flipping: they call it
opportunity.
Rule 6. If you mess up, it's not your parents
fault, so don't whine about your mistakes,
learn from them.
Rule 7. Before you were born, your parents
weren't as boring as they are now. They got
that way from paying your bills, cleaning
your clothes and listening to you talk about
how cool you thought you were. So, before
you save rainforests from the parasites of
your parent's generation, try delousing the
closet in your own room.
Rule 8. Your school may have done away
from winners and losers, but life has not. In
some schools they have abolished failing
grades and they will give you as many times
as you want to give the right answer. This
doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to
anything in real life.
Rule 9. Life is not divided into semesters.
You don't get summers off and very few
employers are interested in helping you find
yourself. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10. Television is not real life. In real life
people, actually have to leave the coffee
shop and go to jobs.

Asura King Bali had become very
powerful and could not be defeated in
normal course. Lord Vishnu knew that the
king never allowed anyone to return empty
handed so he went to the king with a
begging bowl in his incarnation of 'Vaman
Avtar' and asked for land that he could cover
“in his three dwarfish steps.” Once the
favor was granted, Vaman transformed
himself into Trivikarma. King Bali thus lost his
present and future possessions.
Shivaji employed guerilla tactics instead
of fighting in the conventional way to carve
out Maratha Kingdom.
Lord Krishna manipulated the downfall
re you stuck with your current
state of affairs for too long? If yes!
There can only be two reasons. AOne, you are satisfied with what you have
and do not want to exert any more – if you
are in this group, you need not read any
further as you do not have the answer to
come out of the rut you are in. The second,
those who want to change their
conventional procedure and systems that
are hindrances in their progress. Just read
on.
Sai R. Vaidyanathan has explained that
you can come out of your mess only when
you adopt some unconventional methods.
He based his suggestions on examples
of a huge army as compared to small army
of Pandvas in the fight of 'Mahabharata' .
Who can forget the announcement of
“Ashwathama Mara Gaya” which broke the
back of 'Korvas' when an elephant in that
name was killed.
One can search around and find many
such examples to confirm that when you do
not get the results in the usual way, you can
get them by unconventional ways.
Remember nothing succeeds like success
and in the end people appraise you from
your success in your field. Do whatever you
may but for goodness sake act only under
the law of the land.

o you know who started the Guinness book and how?
The first Guinness Book of world records was started by
Hughes Beaver in collaboration Noris and Ross Macketar Din the year 1955. This book became so popular that its sale
increased each year and now one has to perform exceptionally to
find a name in this Book. The manner in which Hughes Beaver
conceived of it was as below.
In the year 1951, Hughes Beaver was out hunting when he saw
a flock of strange birds fly over him. Try as he may, he could not correctly place the bird, nor could his
friends who accompanied him. Back home, he went over a number of books to find an answer but in vain.
He finally got the answer in the year 1954 i.e. almost after three years. This made Hughes think that many
people can find themselves in a similar situation and would need a reference book to find their answers. It
was then he met Noris and Ross who worked for a fact finding agency in London to bring out the book next
year.
The book derived its name from “Guinness Breweries” where Hughes was then employed.

HEALTH MATTERS
Here are a few precautions and
preventive measures. They don't cost you
anything except a few minutes of your
time:
nLong hours in an air-conditioned room
can lead to dehydration. You need to
drink at least 8 glasses of water even
when you don't feel thirsty.
nTake a walk around the office every 30
to 40 minutes. This ensures that the
back and the eyes get some rest and
legs some circulation.
nTry to look at some natural greenery
outside the window or at something
blue. Green and blue are soothing
colors and cool the eyes. Also
remember to blink as often as you can.
Some Exercises
nLift your shoulder and keep them up for
10 seconds bring them down for 10
seconds.
nThrow your head back for 10 seconds
and bring it up for 10 seconds.
nBring your head sideways to the count
of 5 and back straight to the count of 5.
nRotate your shoulders 5 times
clockwise, and then anti-clockwise 5
times. Same for the wrists.
nPeriodically straighten your back for 10
seconds and relax for 10 seconds.
Quick Tips
nThe heart is a muscle and it needs
exercise to keep fit so that it can pump
blood efficiently round your body with
each heart beat. Aim for 30 minutes
moderate intensity exercise daily.
nKeep a tab on your blood pressure. The
higher your blood pressure, the shorter
your life expectancy.
nGet your cholesterol levels checked
periodically and consult your doctor
with the results.

Larry's Bar
A man goes to a doctor and says,
“Doctor, my wife is unfaithful to me. Every
evening, she goes to Larry's bar and picks up
men. In fact, she sleeps with anybody who
asks her! I'm going crazy. What do you think I
should do? “Relax” says the doctor, “take a
deep breath and calm down. Now tell me,
exactly where is Larry's bar?
Last Wish
John was on his death bed and gasped
pitifully, “Give me one last request, dear,” he
said. “Of course, John,” his wife said softly.
“Six months after I die,” he said, “I want you
to marry Bob.”
“But, I thought you hated Bob,” she said.
With his last breath John said “I do!”
Locker Room
A little boy got lost at the YWCA and
found himself in the women's locker room.
When he was spotted, the room burst into
shrieks, with women grabbing towels and
running for cover. The little boy watched in
amazement and then asked: 'What's the
matter? Haven't you ever seen a little boy
before?”
Expectant Father
An expectant father rang the hospital to
see how his wife was progressing. By mistake
he was connected to the cricket ground.
“How's it going?” he asked. “Exceedingly
well,” came the reply. “We have got three
out and we hope to get the rest out.”
Training Tips
A group of junior-level executives were
participating in a management training
program. The seminar leader pounded
home his point about the need to make
decisions and take action on these decisions.
“For instance,” he said, “if you had five frogs
on a log and three of them decided to jump,
how many frogs would you have left on the
log?” The answers from the group were
unanimous: “Two.” “Wrong,” replied the
speaker. “there would still be five because
there is a difference between deciding to
jump and jumping.”
