Vator Splash Oakland is a startup competition and educational conference for

entrepreneurs and investors. Vator was founded by Bambi Francisco, award

for Dow Jones MarketWatch. who started her career at MarketWatch in 1999, as

Internet editor and morning business anchor for KPIX, a CBS affiliate. Vator

Splash events have been held in L.A., NY, London and San Francisco. The event

was moved from San Francisco to Oakland last year in a direct effort to be at the

forefront of Oakland’s emergence as a tech hub. In its first year in Oakland,

Vator Splash brought 900 attendees and garnered a great deal of press. Vator

Splash includes a prestigious startup competition that has finalists who have

survicved two rounds of judging present on stage. Winners receive sit-down

meetings with top VCs and a variety of other prizes.

The Oakland Music Festival (OMF) was founded by two locals from Oakland, Alfonso Dominguez and Hunter Marshall. Collectively running Oakland businesses catered to the hospitality sector, Alfonso has ten years experience running successful restaurants and bars, and Hunter has 2 years cultivating artist events across the Bay Area. Alfonso, prior to launching OMF, helped launch Thursday Night Live, a summer long music series in Old Oakland, helping to rebrand the Old Oakland neighborhood as a dining and nightlife destination. Alfonso’s most recent venture, Popuphood, is a small business incubator helping to revitalize small business retailers in struggling neighborhoods (mentioned NY Times & Huffington Post).

Oakland is experiencing a resurgence of its culture capital. OMF’s mission is to highlight the existing musical talent locally and nationally. Our mission is to support and promote the talent which currently exists here in Oakland, and to invite nearby local talents to join. In our first year, we booked 85% of our performing talent from Oakland, which is in-sync with our goal for the coming years. Our initial target audience is the greater Bay Area between ages 18-40 years old.

OMF would like to hold 2015’s festival at its proposed time in late September. This year, we hope to add a week of events throughout Oakland venues with one grand open air music festival in our Downtown/ uptown Oakland. The final day will be Saturday September 26th 11 am to 8pm.

OMF is looking to change the format in how one experiences a music festival. We are looking to engage different locations and venues to participate in hosting various bands throughout the 7-day festival. We want the concert goer to be able to explore Oakland during their attendance, ultimately spreading the economic impact throughout the Downtown area. We are looking to hold the Music event at 5-7 different local venues with existing stages, including 3-5 local public amphitheaters. The venues will be centrally located in downtown Oakland to parking and public transportation. How? By purchasing an OMF wristband for one day or 7 days. The potential we envision with 7 days, gives way to many existing businesses profiting from secret music shows, restaurant bookings, locals merchant deals, and of course all access to all venues participating. OMF is excited to use the local built-in infrastructure that Oakland has for music activities, for example, the new amphitheater by Lake Merritt. We are planning to kick off the festival by having a free music series offered there throughout the weekend, giving way to strategic sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, corporations, or stakeholders to sponsor the musician and the sound permits.

Our win win scenario in a nutshell: A win for the guest, the OMF guest has a chance to explore each different venue and experience Oakland on a street level. A win for the venue, We will bring thousands of potential new clients to their businesses at hours they may not be open, bringing additional revenue to each local business. A win for the city, months of positive marketing for the City of Oakland, along with sales tax revenue from increased spending at local businesses.

Last year, we were determined to book talent across various genres of music and across a wide age range. The venues of Oakland already highlight a diverse range of musical genres, OMF will focus these genres of music in their own designated venue. Each venue will have its own security and OMF staff. We will also include a food component comprised of food trucks, without placing them in locations conflicting with local eateries.

2015 Budget:

Initial Marketing $10,0002015 branding, printing in local ad’s, radio, social marketing, printing, website

Staff $10,000Social media marketing team, staff during event

Production tents / stage / sound / fencing / toilets / back stage $45k

Musical acts $40k 85% local acts, 15% national performers

Security $9000local security team, OPD

Permits $4000Food pods, sounds permits, parking permits, special events permits

Total 118,000k

Sponsorship received will be specifically spend to help the cost on production cost.

The funding for the festival is comprised on ticket sales, initial capital investors, corporate and stake holder sponsorships, revenue share by each venue.

Since launching OMF in 2013, we have a head start in brand recognition with last years social media campaign on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, making up thousands of followers. In launching a new format of omitting street closures and using the existent various venues within the downtown area, we can piggy back on the venue followers, scaling back on cost, and our marketing efforts.

We are ecstatic to think of the possibilities that can arise through our partnership with the City. Our goals are in many ways the same, to help promote and support the local economy and see it thrive. We envision OMF to be the next SXSW( Austin,TX) of Oakland. With the support of our City, and the existing support of local venues and local artists, we have no limits to what financial gain and positive press OMF can bring to our beloved city.

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to apply for your help.
