DISNEY AND DIVERSITY!Amtheyst Floyd
ARTICLE REVIEW
ARTICLE Disney is number 38 on the list of
companies with the most diversity.
The article talks about the amazing difference Disney is making towards having a more diverse faculty.
Many women are hired in managerial positions.
ARTICLE CONT.• Disney has 31% higher amount of
Latinos in managerial positions than the Top 10
• Works with employee resource groups for women.
• Disney prides themselves on their inclusiveness.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION
IT’S NOT A RACE! Disney was recognized to be named one of
Profiles in Diversity Journal’s Diversity Leaders of 2015.
Paul Richardson, an African American man, is the chief diversity officer.
He explains in an interview that he is often looking for people who share the same view as Disney, and that it is important to look everywhere, not only in cultures that look like you.
THE NEW LATINA PRINCESS To reference back to the original
article: Promotions for Lantinos into
management are 31% higher than the Top 10 and 76.5% higher than the Top 50
Latinos actually in management is 28.8% higher than the Top 10 and 55.6% higher than the Top 50.
Many employees are happy now knowing that they are not only important to the business, but also to the entertainment of children. For example, the new Latina princess, Elena of Avalor.
THAT BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW
WAVING THE PRIDE FLAG Disney scored a 100% on the Human Rights
Campaign in 2012. This means Disney demonstrated LGBT
competency. Allowing and supporting Disneyland Resort
Diversity Resource Group PRIDE. PRIDE – People Respecting Individuals
Diversities in Everyone
FLOWER POWER
THE WORKING WOMAN Global Workplace and Women’s
Initiative (GWWI) works with Disney. They focus on expanding opportunities for women in business.
The employees resource group (ERG) for women, or otherwise known as Women@Disney, has over 2,000 members from the last three years alone.
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR… Glass Ceiling is a term that describes an
unofficial acknowledge barrier to advancement in profession, especially affecting women and members of minorities.
Disney appears to not experience this is any article from my research.
They treat and promote each gender, race, person with equal treatment.
THERE’S ALWAYS ONE LEFT OUT
THE PHYSICALLY DISABLED No article explains in any manner the
treatment or equality of those physically disabled.
One article explained that Disney was sued by mothers of 16 children and young adults with physical disabilities.
After they were confronted with such a scandal, they did make a large change to accommodate with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE There was a process that allowed people with
disabilities to use an app that held their place in line so they were not forced to stand, which was not possible for some.
This app only held the place at one attraction at a time. Disney was led to believe that too many people were taking advantage of the app so that they could do other things instead of wait and still reap the benefits.
Those who were suing said that Disney was trying to, “cleanse its parks of what Disney views as the anti-Magic of such persons’ stimming, tics and meltdowns.”
ON A LOWER LEVEL Many of the employees did not know how to
react to the children. Stimming is not a well known action that
means self-stimulatory behavior This includes hand-flapping, rocking back and
forth, and repeating certain words. Lack of representation and lack of exposure
to people of the disabled community. This leads me to believe that Disney is not
quite diverse as much as they pride themselves on. Like any other company, there is room to grow and learn.
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS Why does Disney pride themselves on
inclusiveness but does not create an easier environment for customers with physical disabilities?
Does Disney ever feel the need to go big and beyond for celebrating diversity?
Is diversity of employees always in the forefront of their mind?
QUESTIONS CONT. Despite having diversity, do the employees
really feel accepted? When celebrating the diversity of the
princesses, do they employees join along and or are they celebrated too?
What other types of biased do employees face that we the outsiders cannot understand?
