Springwaters won the Supreme Exhibit of the Show against leading Dorset studs from across NSW. Among other awards the stud was especially pleased to win the Armdale Trophy for a group of three rams and the Cornwall Trophy for a sires’ progeny group with the same three rams. To win a group class requires a consistency of breeding with particular emphasis on structural cor- rectness and superior muscling. Springwaters have an enviable history of supply- ing quality flock rams since 1978, initially to the Cooma, Bombala and Delegate areas but in recent years, to the South West Slopes, Central West and Riverina areas of NSW. Some of the stud’s oldest clients are still travelling to Boorowa to source rams. The stud was first in Australia to utilise the services of Stockscan (NZ) to scan for performance traits. This tool combined with a dedicated breeding approach means the Springwaters Stud can pro- vide rams to produce early maturing suckers for the local trade as well as rams to produce heavy export lambs. Springwaters won the Supreme Exhibit of the Show at the NSW Dorset Championships. Ballatherie has more to offer The Peters family and stud classer Stuart Hodgson are excited about their upcoming on-property ram sale, with a greater selection of rams available than ever before. This year the sale will include their first sons of Willandra GP, the ram they purchased from Willandra Poll Merino Stud in September 2011 for $22,000. The ram was used in their AI program, and paddock mated. While the Peters Family don’t show sheep to any extent, they have followed with great interest, the out- standing success of good friend Ross Wells with his team of ewes and rams sired by Willandra GP, including Desmond, who won the Australian Champion Hogget Ram of the Year at the Hay Merino Sheep Show, and the Champion All Purpose Hogget at Bendigo. The Ballatherie Poll Merino Stud was established in 1998, based on Willandra blood ewes. Ballatherie sheep are certainly dual purpose, low maintenance, with large frames, heavy carcases and quality wool. During the past few years, the Peters family bought top Uardry Poll Rams at their on- property sales. These rams were used in their AI program, and pad- dock mated to Ballatherie Stud Ewes, producing some excellent rams. Disappointed to see such an old and iconic stud depart the industry, the Peters family decided to buy a number of Uardry Stud Sheep at the dispersal sale. They purchased 100 2011 Drop Stud ewes, 175 2011 Drop Double Stud ewes, 104 ram lambs from the 2012 AI program, and three sires. The ewes have been kept as a separate family, and joined to the Uardry Sires purchased at the dispersal sale and previous on-property sales. Next year and in future years, Ballatherie will be able to offer Uardry blood rams, so there will be the opportu- nity for former Uardry clients to continue with that bloodline. With the season improving, and the rams presenting well, the Peters Family have every confidence in the Merino industry, and are looking forward to a great day on Friday 6th September. The Ballatherie Poll Merino Rams are paddock bred and reared, low maintenance rams with large frame, quality wool and hardy constitution.
