Springwaters top Dorset ChampionshipsThe Springwaters Poll
Dorset Stud took out themajor honours at the recentNSW DorsetChampionships at Cowra.
Springwaters won theSupreme Exhibit of theShow against leadingDorset studs from acrossNSW.
Among other awards thestud was especiallypleased to win theArmdale Trophy for agroup of three rams and theCornwall Trophy for asires’ progeny group withthe same three rams.
To win a group classrequires a consistency of
breeding with particularemphasis on structural cor-rectness and superiormuscling.
Springwaters have anenviable history of supply-ing quality flock ramssince 1978, initially to theCooma, Bombala andDelegate areas but in
recent years, to the SouthWest Slopes, Central Westand Riverina areas ofNSW.
Some of the stud’s oldestclients are still travelling toBoorowa to source rams.
The stud was first inAustralia to utilise theservices of Stockscan (NZ)to scan for performancetraits.
This tool combined witha dedicated breedingapproach means theSpringwaters Stud can pro-vide rams to produce earlymaturing suckers for thelocal trade as well as ramsto produce heavy exportlambs.

Ballatherie has more to offerThe Peters family and stud classer Stuart Hodgson are
excited about their upcoming on-property ram sale, witha greater selection of rams available than ever before.
This year the sale will include their first sons ofWillandra GP, the ram they purchased from WillandraPoll Merino Stud in September 2011 for $22,000.
The ram was used in their AI program, and paddockmated.
While the Peters Family don’t show sheep to anyextent, they have followed with great interest, the out-standing success of good friend Ross Wells with histeam of ewes and rams sired by Willandra GP, includingDesmond, who won the Australian Champion HoggetRam of the Year at the Hay Merino Sheep Show, and theChampion All Purpose Hogget at Bendigo.
The Ballatherie Poll Merino Stud was established in1998, based on Willandra blood ewes.
Ballatherie sheep are certainly dual purpose, lowmaintenance, with large frames, heavy carcases andquality wool.
During the past few years, the Peters family bought
top Uardry Poll Rams at their on- property sales. These rams were used in their AI program, and pad-
dock mated to Ballatherie Stud Ewes, producing someexcellent rams.
Disappointed to see such an old and iconic stud departthe industry, the Peters family decided to buy a numberof Uardry Stud Sheep at the dispersal sale.
They purchased 100 2011 Drop Stud ewes, 175 2011Drop Double Stud ewes, 104 ram lambs from the 2012AI program, and three sires.
The ewes have been kept as a separate family, andjoined to the Uardry Sires purchased at the dispersal saleand previous on-property sales.
Next year and in future years, Ballatherie will be ableto offer Uardry blood rams, so there will be the opportu-nity for former Uardry clients to continue with thatbloodline.
With the season improving, and the rams presentingwell, the Peters Family have every confidence in theMerino industry, and are looking forward to a great dayon Friday 6th September.
■ The Ballatherie Poll Merino Rams are paddock bred and reared, low maintenance rams with largeframe, quality wool and hardy constitution.
