ONE SCOOP A DAY!

DISTRACTION! MARK! TREAT! (D.M.T.) This game is your perfect partner in so many situations and environments that it really makes sense that you grasp a good understanding of it!DMT will boost your relationship toolkit and support you turning your dog training struggles into strengths. We absolutely love an “easy win” every time so what could be more simple and easy to grasp than simply feeding your dog some tasty food whenever you see they’ve sensed something – it doesn’t matter if that’s positive or negative – you literally just feed regardless to start … WOW!! Easy right?

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU AND YOUR DOG? Our dogs are going through every hour of every day making choices and this is really tiring for them! Each choice they process, whether it is a good or bad outcome, adds a little to their “bucket” for the day and once this is near full, even the smallest event can lead to a disproportionately large reactive episode. This quite often makes owners panic or become puzzled as to why their dog is unpredictable.

By making most of those choices “none of their business” using DMT you are reducing their mental workout and allowing them to access their natural calmness. Calm behaviours are always appropriate and ones that you as an owner will love so let’s get to it!

DISTRACTION This really can be absolutely ANY “event” in the environment – it could be a person appearing in the distance, hearing an emergency vehicle siren or even smelling a neighbours BBQ!Your dog doesn’t have to “go crazy” at the event, just notice it and chances are if you have noticed, they have already clocked it on some level. If you are working with a specific struggle for example unwanted reactivity or fear of the postman, the thing which leads to your dog reacting may be called the trigger.

This stage is sometimes written as “DISTRACT” as short-hand so take care in not thinking that your goal is to “distract your dog” … it’s not at all!

MARK A marker is a word, sound or signal that a positive event is about to come your dogs way! In the case of DMT we would always look to use a calmly conditioned marker such as a calm drawn out “niiiiiceeee” or “gooooooood” rather than a more exciting “yes” or a clicker.

This is because we want our dogs to understand the situation is a calm one and doesn’t require getting too excited over.

TREAT We would recommend that you use food for this game as both the mechanics of the game and the emotional state needed really pair better with a food reward. If the presence of food itself gets your dog excited or they are really not willing to work for food, you would need to look at these struggles in more detail before embarking on DMT fully.

It is important to note that although we are using food in this game – it would be taken out of your dog’s daily food allowance to enable them to stay fit and healthy.

Add a simple distraction…

e.g. a leaf blowing or someone walking past. Mark “NIIICE” & then deliver the food

With your dog in front of you (on or off lead) say your calm marker word e.g. ‘Niiiice’… then feed your dog

Deliver food calmly to your dog

Repeat step 1 & 2 a few times – make sure there’s a short moment of time between “NIIICE” and the delivery of the food

The aim at this stage is to pair a calm word with the idea that there’s nothing to worry about… We add more to this game… Concentrate here first.

PROGRESS TRACKER: DMT DISTRACTION, MARK, TREAT

STAGES OF DMT Dogs decide what level they are at.

Level 1: Dog sees distraction, say “nice” (mark), and treat REGARDLESS of behaviour. If the dog won’t take food, the REWARD in that situation is REMOVAL from the situation.

Level 2: Dog sees distraction,

say “nice” (mark), dog orients back to you, and treat.

Level 3: Dog sees distraction, dog disengages and orients to you BEFORE the marker word, say “nice” (mark), and treat.

Level 4: Dog sees distraction, they are

aware of the distraction, but there is no response.
