Wills swing tunes of ―Faded Love and San Antonio Rose.‖ The Legendary Midnight Cowboy Bill Mack‘s ―Drinking Champagne‖ and the hit songs made famous by Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Joe Garland‘s ―In The Mood‖, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and so many more. Twenty tracks on the Tom Houston Orchestra‘s, Tux-edo Country is sure to bring back the memories of our younger days. On May1st, 2009 I had not only the pleasure, but the honor as well, to shake hands with Tom Houston, what a remarkable musi-cian he is and a good friend to boot. _______________________________________________

Cowboy Jam Session:

Western Culture News &

Reviews

- by Jeri L. Dobrowski

Going to the Blogs

A recent after-branding conversation

touched on blogs. Not dogs, although there was a stray at the

corral earlier in the day. Blogs.

“ B log, ” short for weblog, was coined in 1999. Think online di-

ary—a running account of the author ’ s personal life or view-

point—written for public consumption and accessed via the com-

puter. Beyond posting short essays, some bloggers share break-

ing news, opinions, gossip, recipes, and poetry. Others use the

format as a marketing tool. Most allow readers to write a comment

or respond to a question within a forum or chat room. Some offer

contests. The more ingenious the author, the more varied the

features.

Annika Nelson, a staff assistant with North Dakota Horizons and

contributing member of the blogosphere, triggered the discussion

as we visited after supper at the Box O. She likes to embellish her

posts of seasonal North Dakota happenings with photos: horizon-

tal-lines.typepad.com. Unfortunately, her camera battery ran low

that day, so she went home with only a few images. That ’ s too

bad. Had handing her camera to someone been an option, she

could have been photographed doing duty as half of an all-

important calf wrestling team.

As a blogger, Annika likes to stay on top of what ’ s happening in

the genre. She mentioned her favorite, Confessions of a Pioneer

Woman, touting the author ’ s engaging writing and incredible

photography. I wanted to know more and discovered that Annika

has excellent taste in blogs.

Confessions took honors for best-designed weblog, best photog-

raphy, and best weblog of the year at the 2009 Bloggies, which

recognizes the best in blogging. City-girl-turned-ranchwife/

blogger, Ree Drummond, married a cattle rancher. They live in

rural Oklahoma, where she home schools their four children.

“ B lack Heels to Tractor Wheels ” is the continuing saga of their

courtship and marriage. But wait, there ’ s more! Ree also dishes

on topics such as home schooling, cooking, and home & garden.

It ’ s easy to see why fans voted it tops: thepioneerwoman.com.

Here are several other ag-related blogs I hope you ’ l l enjoy:

Western South Dakota rancher and saddle maker Robert Dennis

has been blogging from Red Owl since September 2006. His

Dennis Ranch Blog, dennisranch.wordpress.com showcases a

refreshingly simple snapshot of work and family life on a northern

Great Plains cattle operation. It ’ s a horse-and-saddle outfit. No

four-wheelers here. Robert ’ s photos add a great deal to the on-

going dialogue. His “ After the Blow ” is exceptional, portraying

winter in the bucolic setting: dennis-

ranch.wordpress.com/2009/03/31/after-the-blow/p3310012.

Sharon O ’ Toole started her weblog in 2006 as well. She and

husband, Pat, ranch in the Little Snake River Valley on the Wyo-

ming-Colorado border. Her blog traces the activities and life on

their six-generation family ranch, “ from the mundane to the fabu-

lous. ” Sharon is one of the most disciplined bloggers whom I

follow, faithfully chronicling what ’ s happening with the sheep,

cattle, dogs, horses, and family. As with Annika and Robert,

Sharon ’ s photos add depth to the narrative. Be sure to check

out the entry for May 23, 2009, entitled “ Shearing, shearing,

shearing, lambing ” : westernfolklife.org/weblogs/artists/sharono.

College student and South Dakota cattle producer Amanda Nolz

launched her BEEF Daily Bilog n the fall of 2008. The subject of

her first installment was Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. On

May 11, 2009, Amanda posted a photo and caption taken on the

occasion of her graduation from South Dakota State University.

She has since returned home to work with her parents on the

family ranch. I like Amanda ’ s Quick BEEF Daily Fact at the end

of each post: blog.beefmagazine.com/beef _daily.

R.W. HAMPTON ACHIEVES CHART SUCCESS IN EUROPE!

(Nashville, TN - June 8, 2009) Brian Ferriman, president of Sa-vannah Music (USA) Inc. and personal manager of American

cowboy entertainer R.W. Hampton, is pleased to report that Hampton's cur-rent European single, We've Taken Bob Back To Tulsa, from his award winning CD, Oklahoma... Where The West Remains, recently climbed to the Top of the European Hotdisc Top 40 Country Chart for the week beginning May 28, 2009. The Hotdisc Top 40 Country Chart is a list of the Top 40 most popular songs re-leased on the Rush Re-

leased promotional compilation CD. Similar in concept to the American CDX and CD-Tex compilation CDs sent to subscribing country music radio programmers - in the case of CD-Tex, to ra-dio programmers of Texas music not only in Texas but around the world - the European Rush Released compilation CD is distrib-uted monthly to a subscription list of over 700 country music DJs located primarily in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Each week the DJs who receive Rush Released send back reac-tion sheets to the publishers of Rush Released in which they are given the chance to rate every song from 10 points to zero. The resulting chart lists the songs with the highest ratings for that week. It is exclusively for clients of the Rush Released CD, and at any given time it identifies the 40 most popular Rush Released songs out of an active universe of approximately 80 country-oriented songs. Reflecting the diversity of the European country music radio environment where the sounds and songs of tradi-tional country music (and cowboy music, too) are embraced alongside today's country music, artists who have had a Number One single on the Hotdisc Top 40 in the past two years include Tim McGraw, Mark Chesnutt, George Jones, Gretchen Peters, Michelle Wright, Gene Watson, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Rimes, the Bellamy Brothers, Clay Walker, Jim Reeves, Don Williams - and now, R.W. Hampton. Congratulating Hampton on his first Hotdisc Number One, Hotdisc founder Stuart Cameron enthused, "Delighted for R.W. because it sends out a clear message that Euro-pean DJs love traditional country and western mu-sic." Upon learning the news of his European chart success with We've Taken Bob Back To Tulsa, Hamp-ton responded, "My thanks go out to all my new coun-try radio friends in Europe. I'm delighted that my brand of cowboy music is finding favor overseas." We've Taken Bob Back To Tulsa is the third song from Oklahoma..Where The West Remains to be re-

leased as a Rush Released single. Hampton's first track, The Everlasting Hills Of Oklahoma, peaked at #4 on the Hotdisc Top 40 chart the week of November 27 last year, while his second release, Oklahoma Hills, held the Number Six position for two weeks this past February. Everyone at Savannah Music congratulates R.W. and wishes him continued success with his growing career - inside and outside the United States. More can be learned about R.W. Hampton at his website. Okla-homa... Where The West Remains can be heard in its entirety at the music section of the website. For approved images, bio ma-terial, reviews, articles and further information about R.W. Hamp-ton, please visit the hidden electronic press kit section of Hamp-ton's site. About Savannah Music (USA) Inc.: A Tennessee-based artist management company and record label, Savannah Music (USA) Inc. represents the entertainment interests of Hampton, Canadian country star Michelle Wright and American cowboy star Brenn

Hill.

Stephanie Davis' "Western Bling" and "Western Bliss" review by Margo Metegrano, CowboyPoetry.com

Proving (twice) that good things are worth waiting for, Stephanie Davis follows her acclaimed

2003 "Crocus in the Snow" with two terrific releases that have long been in the works: "Western Bling" and "Western Bliss." Well known as an impressive performer as well as a gifted song-writer—Garth Brooks, Don Edwards, Trisha Yearwood, Maria Muldaur, Joey and Rory, Roger Whittaker, Martina McBride, Sam Moore and others have recorded her work--this time out she gives her inspired take on some well-chosen standards, and includes just one piece of her own. Both CDs are filled with a fresh and genuine originality in every aspect of production. The songs will follow you around; they're contagious. You'll find yourself listening over and over to her unique, dazzling voice--always in perfect command--and its enormous range of emotions, which can be saucy and sweet, playful and serious, flirtatious and innocent, and more. It all comes together with the rare quality of the inventive arrangements and the virtuoso musicians accompa-nying her: Cindy Cashdollar, Rich O'Brien, Reggie Reuffer, Clint Strong, and others. The projects exemplify Stephanie Davis's trademark for perfection. The stand-out package design for each CD, with art by notable Montana artist Monte Dolack (www.dolack.com), is a great match for the spirited music inside. "Western Bliss" will make you want to put on your dancing boots and head on out. It's a guaran-teed good time. Ride along and find yourself "Hittin' the Trail To-night" (Bruce Kiskaddon's poem put to music by Western Folklife Center Founding Director Hal Can-non), and that includes the wistful "Santa Fe Trail" and the enchant-ing "Navajo Trail." When you get to the wild and flat-out fun "Bronco Buster's Ball" you'll be close to "Trail's End." The "Trail's End Theme Song" is Stephanie Davis's song for her forthcoming radio show, which will include "sketches, sound ef-fects, monologues, and the Trail's End Ranch Hand Band." A frequent guest on Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," its host Garrison Keillor urged her to create her own Trail's End Ranch Radio show. A show in 2007 at the Western Folklife Cen-ter's National Cowboy Poetry Gathering tried out the concept with great success. Other highlights on Western Bliss include "Montana Cowgirl", "Old Faithful" and "Leanin' on the Old Top Rail." "Western Bling" takes the romantic fork in the trail. Western Swing gets reinvented with this sparkling array of tunes, where Bob Wills meets Gershwin and they share the stage with the songs of Cindy Walker, the Mills Brothers, and Bobby Darin. Each track has its own special "bling." There's the hot opening track, "Talkin' 'Bout You," the steamy "Baby, That Sure Would Go Good," a most convincing "The Best Things in Life are Free," and a sweetly pouty "Slow Poke." You'll want to turn the lights down for "If I Had You." Even heartbreak doesn't topple Stephanie Davis's signature hu-mor and positive spirit. She describes "Nevertheless" in ex-

panded liner notes, "...Ah, the terrible/wonderful angst of stand-ing, trembling, hands clasped, legs poised, atop the High Dive Of Love...here's to all of you brave hearts and remember to check to see that there's water in the pool." Of Cindy Walker's "Hubbin' It," she writes, "If the only bailout you've been the recent recipient of involved the 'gentle as a kitten' stud horse your cousin Lester brought back from the sale barn and an amorous cow moose, here's your song, Western Bling-style." In fact, those liner notes are a special added attraction to these projects, full of snappy writing that reflects her generous view of the world (read them at Stephanie Davis' web site). The quality of each selection, the unerring sense of timing throughout, along with the top notch vocal and musical perform-ances makes this dual release a guaranteed cure for...you name it. You won't be anything but happy while you're treating yourself to "Western Bling" and "Western Bliss." "Western Bling" and "Western Bliss" are available for $17 post-paid from http://StephanieDavis.net, where there are audio sam-ples and links for iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. And wait! There's more! You'll get "a genuine Montana CD opener (quill from an organic, free-range, died-a-natural-death porcupine) with each order." Stephanie Davis says, "...he was dying for a career in show business." ————————————————————

Hot Club Of Cowtown Consisting of Elana Fre-merman (now known as Elana James) (Vocals, Violin), Whit Smith (Vocals, Guitar), and Jake Erwin (Upright Bass), the highly popular Hot Club Of Cow-town who have continually returned to perform in the United Kingdom over the

past 10 years. Their journey started back in 1995 and New York City where Smith was forming an 11-piece swing band called Western Caravan.. Their name alludes to Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Quintette Du Hot Club De France, but they also play a sensational countryfied Western Swing descended from the sound of Bob Wills and Hank Williams. Also the band acknowledges the wealth of mystifying jazz from 1920s violin and guitar duo Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, whom they admire. The legacy of the roots of the Hot Jazz era, Americana music, vintage sounds of pop and folk music, continues to unfurl into the new sound of the group's original numbers. The members of Hot Club of Cowtown would go their separate ways in 2005, but would reunite for occasional shows in 2006/07, including the Fuji Rock Festival and a tour of Australia as Elana James & The Hot Club of Cowtown, in 2005/06. Whit Smith per-formed as Whit Smith's Hot Jazz Caravan, based out of Austin, Texas. Elana toured with Bob Dylan in 2005, the first female to be included in his touring band in over 30 years (Elana came to Dy-lan's attention when The Hot Club of Cowtown opened for him and Willie Nelson during a joint tour of historic ballparks in the Summer of 2004). Changing her last name to James (James be-ing derived from her middle name), Elana began performing in late 2005 with Beau Sample (formerly of Cave Catt Sammy) and Luke Hill, first under the name Elana James and Her Hot Hot Trio, and later as Elana James and the Continental Two, including dates in the UK. It was announced that Whit Smith would sit in with James and the Continental Two when they opened for Bob Dylan for a series of shows in the summer of 2006, again per-forming at historic ballparks. By early 2008 the trio had officially re-formed and was touring once more. In the meantime, some things haven't changed. The band still swings harder than ever as it continues to develop it's unique, ever-evolving sound of 20‘s and 30‘s gems. James's spirited violin-playing and elfin vocals remain the central attraction with Elana playing a 1962 Mittenwald violin. Guitarist Whit Smith explains ―I play a Gibson L-5 from 1946,‖ he affirms. ―It used to be acoustic, so it has an aftermarket cutaway and I put a DeArmong pickup on it which says ‗Guitar Mike‘ on it – some say ‗Mic‘, some say ‗FHC‘. They come with a bracket, but the brackets kinda sag and rattle and become a nuisance, so I just started using putty which serves twofold: it holds the pickup, but it also deadens the top a little bit, so it doesn‘t feed back as much. And I plug that straight into my Gibson EH-150 amp from 1937. It‘s stock, apart from new tubes and the caps have been restored, as close to stock as possible. It‘s so small I can take it on airplanes: put it under the seat, no problem!‖ Jake Erwin works up an impressive head of steam with his slap-bass lines, while new boy Damien Llanes remains busy but unobtrusive behind the drum kit. In the United States, the Hot Club of Cowtown has been featured on All Things Considered, The Grand Ol' Opry, $40 Dollars a Day with Rachel Ray, Mountain Stage, A Prairie Home Companion, and numerous other radio and television programs. In the UK they have appeared extensively on BBC Radio with Bob Harris and Andy Kershaw, and on BBC TV's "Later" with Jools Holland, the ―Live From Glastonbury Festival‖ broadcast, as well as throughout the UK at festivals such as the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival, theatres, and clubs. They are among the youngest members ever to be inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, in 2006.

Hot Club came back to UK for another highly successful tour in September 2008 and returned in May this year (2009). I saw them once again at Bury Met theatre in Lancashire where they drew a near full house. Hot Club return again in July for another breathtaking tour and once again are booked to play at Cam-bridge Folk Festival on Saturday 1st August. Graham Lees ———————————————————————————

What folks are sayin ’ …...

Joe, just wanted to tell you how

much we enjoyed the "Cowtown

Society of Western Swing" event

in Mineral Wells, TX. The

honor of being “fans of the

year” was great, as you know

it’s the friends you make, the

music and musician we are able to enjoy and so much

fun. Several of our friends came and enjoyed it so

much, they will be back next year. The music was

awesome. It gets better with each year.

Thanks again,

52,000 intelligent good-looking readers.

THE LATE GREAT RUSTY NOZZLE. Rusty Nozzle was a country singing star...

at least that's what he told people.

It wasn't a lie because Rusty believed it.

He considered himself Outlaw Country

because he wore open-toed cowboy boots,

had a tattoo of Richard Nixon,

and wore his toupee on top of his cowboy hat.

His desire to be different often made the little kids cry,

and he had to sell his horse because it was afraid of him.

He was ugly as a stomped frog,

and seldom found the note he was trying to sing.

The only thing he didn't lack was confidence.

His talent was making other people think of him as a star...

people with money.

He was never short of financial backers.

When he released his first album "Pearl Before Swine"

no radio station would play it,

so he advertised it on late-night television and sold over a million

copies.

His singing was so bad the younger audience thought it was a

new kind of music.

They called it Demon Rap and wore Rusty Nozzle T-shirts and

toupees.

The older folks had a suspicion that his music was awful,

but it was on TV so they had to buy it.

He had just purchased an estate with a hog shaped swimming

pool,

a nine-hole golf course, and a stable of rodeo horses,

when he accomplished his untimely death.

Early one April morning he was sneaking up on his new horse,

so it wouldn't get a look at him and panic,

when the animal turned its head around and saw him.

Its eyes went wide and buggy with fright, and it went berserk.

Slim was trampled flat,

and was slid under the bunkhouse door by a ranch hand

who thought it was an unattractive throw rug.

This was the best career move of his life.

The radio stations began playing recordings of "The Late Great

Rusty Nozzle".

Other artists released "tribute" albums.

And that just one of the million stories in the music business.

And maybe the dumbest.

Welcome ―Storytime‖! In October, 2000, Bob Allen of KJIM, 1500 AM, out of Sherman/Denison, Texas, took a chance on a storyteller (Waynetta Ausmus) by letting her tell stories on Sunday mornings for 15 min. ―Brazos Valley Gold‖ has been on the air since September, 1994. The show has a classic country format and airs on KAMU-FM, 90.9 in College Station, Texas, the local NPR affiliate at Texas A&M University. Each Friday night from 7-9pm CST, listeners tune in for 2 hours of ―hysterical‖ if not ―historical‖ country music. The music comes from the extensive archives of host, Charlie Edwards. Along with co-host, Miss Dixie, Edwards plays country classics going back to Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, with a little cowboy and

bluegrass music mixed in along the way. Another aspect of the show is the use of ―new‖ artists

who are currently writing and performing ―real‖ country and west-

The Family Of The Late Sal Sage and The Western Roundup

Organization Presents Scholarship

The idea of a

scholarship has

been two years in

waiting by the

family of the late

Sal Sage and the

Western Roundup

Organization.

What a fitting way

to honor Sal Sage

who has played

western music

even when it was-

n ’ t cool. A person has now been chosen to receive the scholar-

ship and it fits like a glove. The little cowgirl in the bottom picture,

Sara Nicole Don-Hursey of Wheatland, CA. will be majoring in

music and will receive a $500.00 scholarship to Yuba College in

Marysville, CA. Sara was home schooled and will graduate from

twelfth grade on June 4th. The graduation will take place at the

Wheatland Grammar school multipurpose room at 6:00 pm. Sara

has heard Sal sing & play many times and she even danced with

him. It fills my heart with joy to have Sara put her name in for the

first scholarship in honor of Sal Sage, the Granddaddy of Western

Music. Pictured with Sara is David Lay Sarah ’ s Step grandpa

and Cowboy Bill

would like to thank

each of you that

contributed to the

scholarship fund.

Your contributions

made this honor

possible. We have

hopes of making

the Sal Sage Me-

Music Roundup has voted to become involved so we hope this

will continue on year after year. We all love and miss him, his

music and his humor so much.

SAN FRANCISCO—June 12, 2009—CowboyPoetry.com offi-cially named its fifteenth Lariat Laureate today—and "8 Sec-onds"—winners in a global com-petition on the internet's premier cowboy poetry site. This popu-

lar folk form preserves and celebrates the stories of ranching and rural life. South Dakota rancher and poet Ken Cook (of Mar-tin), a finalist in previous competitions, was recog-nized as Lariat Laureate for his poem, "The Conver-sation." The inspiration for the poem was an oral history interview, in which Cook says he "spent nearly the entire interview talking about my Grandpa Frank Buckles and my kids and the changes in the cattle industry that have occurred over three gen-erations..." He comments, "For me, the poem has become age-less, with the passing of my Grandpa, my kids growing up, and now a grandchild of my own. This thing we call 'life on the ranch' has a way changing with the seasons." The "8 Seconds" finalists are, alphabetically, Cathy Brian of Loa, Utah; Daniel Bybee of

Reno, Nevada; Byrl Keith Chadwell of Baker City, Ore-gon; Del Gustafson of Duvall, Washington; Slim McNaught of New Underwood, South Da-kota; Kip Sorlie of Viborg, South Dakota; Smoke Wade of

Lewiston, Idaho and Mesquite, Nevada; and Cora Wood of En-

campment, Wyoming. CowboyPoetry.com is a project of the non-profit Center for West-ern and Cowboy Poetry. The site, updated continually, is a central resource for west-ern and cowboy poetry and associ-ated arts. It hosts thousands of clas-sic and contemporary poems, fea-tures, an events calendar, and news. The eighth annual Center-sponsored Cowboy Poetry Week was held in

April 2009, an event officially recognized by unani-mous resolution of the United States Senate. As a part of that celebration, each year the Center's outreach Rural Library Project offers libraries across the West its contemporary Western art poster (this year by Bob Coronato of Hulett, Wyoming) and its annual compi-lation CD of modern and classic cow-boy poetry, "The BAR-D Roundup."

Cowboy poetry's popularity is celebrated year round at CowboyPoetry.com, in an

ever-growing number of publications and recordings, and at hundreds of regional gatherings. No other way of life has spawned so many poets and so many compelling, endur-ing stories. Cowboy poetry's tales of the past and present preserve the heritage of an endangered culture, an im-

portant part of North America and North Ameri-can history. Photos of Cook, McNaught and Wade by Jeri L. Dobrowski

Bill McCallie’s Cowboy Jubilee Radio Show Classical 90.5 WSMC-FM Chattanooga, TN

Well we finally started getting some pretty weather here in the Tennessee Valley and hopefully the rain has stopped for a while, but the rain hasn't dampened the music on the Cowboy Jubilee Radio Show. We started the month out with a CD called " A Steel Guitar Tribute to the Music of Leonard Skyard". This

CD is on CMH and is one of those "Picken On" CD's that just has some of the absolute best musicians doing acoustic or western swing music compilations of some really great songs. I played "T for Texas" and "I Know a Little" from the CD with great response from our public radio audience. I read some excerpts from the Time Warner Series called "The Cowboys" and followed with some Red Stegall music. I played "Dodge City", "When the Cim-arron was Red and on the Rise" and "The Wagon Tongue" for a nice set of cowboy songs. Luke Reed's CD "Corridos":scored with "Blue Mesa", "Pan Handle Wind", "Ever Horse I ever Rode" and "If there wasn't any cows" were all in the line up as well. My friend Doug Flowers, who is himself one fine musician, contrib-uted his "Born Again" to our gospel and inspirational segment. I did a whole show on the music of the Mills Brothers. The Mills Brothers actually competed for radio air time in the 30's and 40's with the singing cowboys, who were so popular at the time. The marriage of "Swing Music" and "Barbershop Harmony" made the Mills Brothers an American phenomenon that only a few groups have been able to surpass over time. "Paper Doll", "Daddy's Little Girl", "Cab Driver", and "Across the Alley from the Alamo" were only a few of the songs highlighted in this segment. I did get one item from You Tube that made a nice ending to one show. I found a clip of the Cactus Cuties singing the "Star Spangled Ban-ner in harmony at a Texas Tech ball game. I have only seen that done once before, as that song is particularly hard to sing by one's self , much less with four part harmony. It did make a nice addition to the show. The Time Jumpers with Carolyn Martin do-ing some vocals is always a hit with the crowd as well. Mr Misun-derstood, I'm from Texas too and Unswung were among the Time Jumper tunes played. The Quebe Sisters added some Texas fid-dle swing with "One more time", "Red Wing", and "Don't let your deal go down". I did a segment this month on the "Last of the Silver Screen Cowboys" and did Rex Allen and Rex Allen Jr. do-ing some nice tunes including a favorite "Arizonia". I wanted to highlight some memories of my old friend Vern Gosdin so I did some interview excerpts provided by Ben Cagle, which he had got from CBS Records when he owned his radio station in Bris-tol. We had Vern Gosdin gospel songs.....sung by "The Voice"

himself. "Precious Jesus Hold my Hand" and I'll Fly Away" by Vern Gosdin made a really nice tribute to such a great voice in Country Music. Dave Stamey's "The Trail took me away" was also in the mix this month. That's just about the news that's fit to print. Cowboy Jubilee con-tinues to be rated the number two show on our public radio station and that's what keeps us on the air. We preview all music submit-ted and try to find a spot to highlight your submissions and we do appreciate each of you who contributed music to the show. Cowboy Jubilee broadcasts on the air and on the internet at 90.5FM and at www.wsmc.org on the wide world of the inter-net. We air at 6pm on Sunday evening EST. ——————————————————————————— A Milestone Celebration for Musician/Horse Trainer and Wife

On Sunday, June 7, 2009 Pat and Nellie Jacobs reached a milestone in their lives that most people will never experience. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children, family and friends marked this special day with food, music and dancing at Charlie and Linda O'Bannon's party barn in Cool, Texas. Pat is an accomplished musician, a rancher, a great cutting horse trainer, an author and about the realest Texas cow-boy you could ever make acquaintance with. He is a lifetime member of Cow-town Society of Western Music and has

always helped out with our fundraisers and benefits throughout the years. His heart is just as big as his hat. He is also CSWM's 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. Throughout his long career in music and horse training he has wrangled many credits to his name. Perhaps, one of the most cherished is the premier of The Oklahoma Swing Project CD in 2008. This musical collaboration with Dave Alexander was 25 plus years in the making. Below is an excerpt written by Pat about this project which is so dear to his heart. I've worn many different hats over the years - rancher, cowboy, nationally known cutting horse trainer and musician, but the most rewarding of all is the 25 years it has taken to produce this historic western swing album. A brief history: 1956-57-58: I played bass on Hurshul Clothiers, "Oklahoma Travelers Road Band." 1978: World renowned writer, playwright, etc., Thomas McGuane, wrote a feature story on one of my cutting horses, "Go Benjibaby Go". This started a lifetime friendship. Tom knew of my fascination with western swing. He introduced me to Jimmy Guresco. Jimmy owned Caribou Studios (one of the leading stu-dios in the world). A mutual friendship formed and as a result of some "horse trading" I acquired 3 days of recording time. I con-tacted Hurshul Clothier. We put our heads together and selected the very best western swing musicians available. It is ironic that they all were from Oklahoma, or had strong Oklahoma ties. We recorded in 1982. We let it die in the can. Shortly before Hurshul's death in 2006, he gave me the original tapes. He said "do something with this." I teamed with Dave Alexander, (his dad, Ashley Alexander, played trumpet and trombone on the original recording). It was a labor of love for Dave. Dave and I then co-produced this album.

Cowtown Society of Western Music Update By Joyce Miller

The Oklahoma Swing Project is a remarkable collection of west-ern swing music featuring some of the best musicians around. It is narrated by acclaimed actor, Barry Corbin. Musicians include Leon Rausch, Pat Jacobs, Dave Alexander, Red Steagall, Tiny

Duncan, Gene Crownover, Randy Elmore, Curley Lewis, Frankie McWhorter, Benny Garcia, Ashley Alexander, Glen Rheese, Jimmy Guercio, Hurshul Clothier, Jimmy Burson, Jimmy Benjamin, Jack Bai-ley, and the incomparable, Ginny Mac. It's a genuine piece of western swing history unlike anything you have ever heard. Do yourself a favor

and pick up one of these great CDs...you will be glad you did. Contact Pat to find out where they are sold at [email protected]. Another of Pat's recent projects is his 13 CD volume audio book which chronicles his life's experiences entitled "Outcasts, Outlaws and Second Chance Horses." Pat may be getting up in years but he still gets up in the saddle every chance he gets. He still trains horses and rides for pleasure and to paraphrase Barry Corbin's thoughts about Pat, "Not only is he a fine horse trainer, he's one of the best story tellers I've ever met." That just goes to show you can't keep a good cowboy down. He is a living legend in the cutting horse business as well as a fine western swing mu-sician. He is and always has been interested in the preservation and promotion of both interests. You can also contact Pat via e-mail to find out how to get a copy of this entertaining audio cd set. In closing, I would like to say on behalf of Cowtown Society of Western Music, "Pat it's a pleasure to know you and Nellie and thanks for all you both do for western music and the western way of life. Here's wishing you Happy 50th Anniversary."

Joyce Miller, Secretary/Treasurer CSWM

Rick Huff's Best Of The West Reviews Review - Call Of The West "Twilight On The Trail" Here's the one Call Of The West fans have been waiting for! And the musicianship, the humor and the calm yet swingin' spirit are intact. Always anchored by Jeanne Cahill and Jerome Campbell, Call Of The West has gone through associations, reconfigu-rations and conflagrations and

has now come around to being "Jeanne Cahill and Jerome Camp-bell!" Trust me...that's all that's ever been needed. You'll find welcome vigor put into classics like the CD's title track. Their originals include a marvelous and ambitiously mystical piece called "The Mesa Ridge," a fresh take of their theme song "Call Of The West" and they solidly claim "Seven Spanish Angels" and "Snowbird" for The Western Team! As if there were any question about how or why Jeanne Cahill would receive ―Instrumentalist Of The Year‖ from the Western Music Association, this album will put that to rest. From the standpoints of performance, artistic choices and esthet-ics, "Twilight On The Trail" is a rare polished gem. If the right folks are paying attention, this one should be a major contender for awards next year. Buy it, buy it, buy it!!! CDs: $13 plus $3 s/h from Call Of The West, P.O. Box 333, Strang, OK 74367. If possible, please use the order form downloaded from www.callofthewest.net by Rick Huff ———————————————————————————

Grandma's kitchen

Cowgirl Sass & Savvy Julie

Carter

It had been more than 35 years since I

first saw it and yet when I looked

through the doorway, I could see that

nothing of consequence had changed.

The kitchen, lit by a single window over the old single basin sink, stood

exactly as it had when I took my first baby girl to spend the day with her

grandma. The same as when, a couple of decades later, that baby girl

took her baby to spend the day with his great-grandma.

Look around your life and see what, if anything, has not changed in

appearance in 35 years and you can honestly say, "It looks exactly the

same." I absolutely cannot look in the mirror and say that. Sure can't

point to the pickup and say that. I have owned about, oh, six or seven

since then. The house - I can't even begin there because I've moved at

least a dozen times. Good horses and dogs have come and gone. So have

the bad ones.

Fresh paint, a new curtain and new floor tile. That was all that was dif-

ferent in her kitchen. Except, in the interim, they invented microwaves

so there was one of those and the old wall rotary dial phone was gone.

The table sat where it always was and the center of it, as before, was

filled with napkins, condiments, a silverware holder and an assortment

of other things deemed important enough to just stay there.

The old bright white wood cabinets filled the east wall broken only by

the sink in the middle. The sink with its signature Rubbermaid dishpan

inside and no cabinet below it, so a curtain covered up those things you

put under a sink. The cabinets went up the wall all the way to meet the

10-foot ceiling and the top row of cupboards could be accessed only by

standing on a stool. The very limited counter space was always full of

canisters, a bread box, dish drainer, percolator coffee pot and assorted

packages of cookies and crackers.

Knick knacks, a corkboard full of keys, a big calendar and grandma-kind

of decorations filled the walls. In any kitchen except Grandma's, it

would have been clutter. In hers, it was personality, warmth and com-

fort. It was her favorite room and she liked it the very best when it was

filled full with family members of all ages and generations laughing,

talking and telling stories. Stories like the one about how the refrigerator

got a bullet hole in it.

As each generation of grandmas passes on, the matriarchal crown moves

a little closer to home. My mom is a wonderful grandma who has many

special things she has shared with her grandchildren. They will each

have a little different piece of her in their hearts forever.

When the rolling pin passes, it makes us all put on life's brakes, look

around and reflect. We take just a moment to ponder what legacy we are

leaving for those coming behind in our tracks. Aprons, cookies, hugs

and plenty of sympathy. Good smells from the stovetop, bushels of ap-

ples to be made into jam, jars of canned fruits and vegetables.

Perhaps mine, or yours, may not look and smell the same as the genera-

tions before us. However, there is something about grandmas that makes

each one special to those who love them.

Thank God for grandmas. They keep us grounded in what really counts.

Pass the cookies, please.
