Vision Australia is proud to welcomeKodak for the second year as
presenting partner and thanks thefollowing supporters who help
make the event possible:
One single candle flame sparked Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelightevent and began a tradition held dear by generations of Australians.
On Christmas Eve 1937, radio broadcaster Norman Banks was deeplymoved by the sight of a woman singing carols at her window with the glowof a candle illuminating her face. The following year, he organised a gathering of 10,000 people to sing carols by candlelight in Melbourne’sAlexandra Park.
Nearly seven decades later, the warmth and goodwill of this magical nighthas spread from Victoria throughout Australia, lighting up many lives withthe joy of Christmas.
For the 20,000 who crowd The Sidney Myer Music Bowl each year, it’s achance to enjoy great music and fun. Millions tune in to the Nine Network’stelecast. But even more heart-warming than the excitement of the night, is the fact it helps a meaningful cause, benefiting children who are blind or vision impaired by supporting the valuable work of Vision Australia.

3 Vision Australia’s Message
Celebrating Christmas together at Vision Australia’s Carols byCandlelight gives us such a warmsense of belonging. Can you imagine how it would feel to be shut out from this, or from participating in any other aspect of community life?
In the 1800s, many day-to-dayactivities were out of reach for people who were blind or visionimpaired. In 1866, Vision Australiabegan offering Australia’s first services for people who were blindor vision impaired. We pioneeredthe first voting rights, employmenttraining, schools, library and homes.
Building on this tradition, VisionAustralia now works with over38,000 people across Australia, from children to the elderly, listening to their concerns then finding positive solutions that helpthem participate in life.
Generous supporters like our presenting partner, Kodak, makeVision Australia’s work possible.Sixty years ago, Kodak offered
employment to people who wereblind so they could join the workforce alongside people withsight. Our partnership with Kodakhas continued through the sixtiesand seventies into the presentwhere, like Kodak, we haveembraced innovation and digitaltechnology to support our services.
Kodak and Vision Australia share a common view, caring about theircommunity and creating new waysby which Australians can participate, connect and share life’s experiences.
Our media partners the NineNetwork, 3AW and Magic 693 have also made an invaluable contribution, as have the volunteerswho selflessly assist with the running of the event.
As proceeds support our children’sservices, you are also making a difference just by being here andparticipating tonight.
Thank you.

5 Isla’s Story
My twin boys Rory and Joa wereborn four months early – beforetheir vital organs could developproperly. The doctors said theywouldn’t survive and if they didthey’d have too many disabilities to count.
My husband and I were braced forthe worst when we were told they’dbe blind.
I was glad their only disability wastheir sight, but I still felt so afraid.Could I cope with not one, but twochildren who were vision impaired?I just prayed for strength to be agood mum. Then I rang VisionAustralia and burst into tears onthe phone.
From the beginning, everyone atVision Australia was lovely, kindand practical. They showed ussimple steps to help Rory and Joaachieve everything sighted childrendo as a matter of course.
Joa’s sight improved with time. But Rory is legally blind with a fraction of vision in one eye only. He’s needed specialist support forthings you wouldn’t even think of,like learning to crawl, walk andpick up toys.
Physiotherapists encouraged himto move around when he couldn’tsee what was ahead. He’s sobrave! He’d fall, bump his headbut get straight up and do it again. Every few months an occupationaltherapist visits our home, checkingRory keeps up with others his age.
Now we know to put his dinnerplate on a contrasting colouredmat so he can find it. He’s hadhelp to learn to cut with scissors, using colourful or shiny paperthat’s easier for him to see. This isgiving him the hand strength he’llneed to write at school.
Isla Smith prayed for strength when she found out her twins would be blind. Thankfully Vision Australia’shelp was just a phone call away.
From the beginning, everyone at Vision
Australia was lovely, kind and practical. They
showed us simple stepsto help Rory and Joa
achieve everythingsighted children do.

Vision Australia was formed when the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (RVIB) merged with three other blindness charities last year.
We are now able to assist more than 38,000 children and adultsacross Australia take a more active part in life.
Some people we work with were born blind or vision impaired.Others lose sight later in life through accidents or aging. With thebackup provided by our services, they can still enjoy a full range of choices in their studies, leisure, careers and daily life.
Vision Australia depends on generous financial support fromindividuals, businesses and groups who care about our community. This vital contribution helps to fund the $60 million needed eachyear to provide our essential services. Some assist us financially, others by donating their time and skills as volunteers.
For more information or to support Vision Australia, phone us toll free on 1300 VISION (1300 847 466) or log onto www.visionaustralia.org.au
Someone even visits the boys’ preschool with tips on how toinclude Rory. Things like using spoken instructions instead of visual gestures or smiles.
You’d be amazed to see my boysnow. When they race through thehouse playing superheroes Rory is as rowdy as any five-year-old. I’ll hear them say ‘I love you Rory,’ ‘I love you Joa,’ when they don’tthink I’m around.
I always tell them they can do anything in life and because ofVision Australia’s support, I knowit’s true.

As I walked down the road At set of sunThe lambs were coming homewardsOne by oneI heard a sheep bell softly calling themAlong the little road to Bethlehem
Beside an open doorAs it drew highI heard sweet Mary singingA lullabyShe sang about the lambs at close of dayAnd rocked her tiny king among the hay
Across the airThe silver sheep bell rangThe lambs are coming comeSweet Mary sangYour star of gold, your star of goldIs shining in the skySo sleep my little kingGo lullaby
As I walked down the road At set of sunThe lambs were coming homewardsOne by oneI heard a sheep bell softly calling themAlong the little road to Bethlehem

A ray of hopeFlickers in the skyA tiny starLights up way up highAll across the landDawns a brand new mornThis comes to passWhen a child is born
A silent wishSails the seven seasThe winds of changeWhisper in the treesAnd the walls of doubtTumble, tossed and tornThis comes to passWhen a child is born
(MONOLOGUE)
And all of this happens because 2000 years ago, a child was born In a stable in Bethlehem. A child that would grow up and teach us that we could believe and enjoy hope and goodwill to all men and a child that could teach us The real meaning of Christmas day.
It’s all a dreamAn illusion nowIt must come trueSometime soon somehowAll across the landDawns a brand new mornThis comes to passWhen a child is born.

Last night I lay a-sleepingThere came a dream so fairI stood in old JerusalemBeside the temple thereI heard the children singingAnd ever as they sangMe thought the voice of angelsFrom heav'n in answer rangMe thought the voice of angelsFrom heav'n in answer rang
Jerusalem, JerusalemHark now the angel singHosanna in the highestHosanna to your king
Then once again the scene was changedNew earth there seemed to beI saw the holy cityBeside the tideless sea
The light of God was on its streets Its gates were open wideAnd all who would might enterAnd no-one was deniedNo need of moon nor stars by nightNor sun to shine by dayIt was the new JerusalemThat would not pass awayIt was the new JerusalemThat would not pass away
Jerusalem, JerusalemSing for the night is o'erHosanna in the highestHosanna forever moreHosanna in the highestHosanna forever more

34The First NoelTraditional
The first Noel, the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherdsIn fields as they layIn fields where they layKeeping their sheepOn a cold winter's nightThat was so deepNoel, noel, noel, noelBorn is the king of Israel.
They look-ed up and saw a starShining in the east, beyond them farAnd to earth it gave a great lightAnd so it continued both day and nightNoel, noel, noel, noelBorn is the king of Israel
Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heav'nly LordThat hath made heav'n and earth of naughtAnd with His blood mankind hath boughtNoel, noel, noel, noelBorn is the king of Israel
35Away In A MangerTraditional

Come sing a song of joyFor peace shall come my brotherSing, sing a song of joy For men shall love each other
That day will dawnJust as sure As hearts that are pure Are hearts set freeNo man must stand aloneWith outstretched hand before him
Reach out and take them in yoursWith love that endures for evermoreThen sing a song of joy For love and understanding.
