Challenges
– Aging infrastructure
– Serves high visibility customers
– For most utilities, represents
small % of overall infrastructure
– Limited employees with subject
knowledge / knowledge loss
– In some cases, high reliability
has resulted in limited
maintenance
– Environmental issues
– Increasing failures, often
“spectacular”

Distribution Systems Practices
(P180.019 & P180.020)
• Overall research objective
Identify, document and share leading industry practices
• What are we doing in 2016?
Identifying and documenting leading industry functional practices in urban underground systems.
Investigating issues and practices for distribution automation device management including activities such as designing, provisioning, installing and commissioning, testing, maintaining, operating and troubleshooting.
• Why is it valuable?
Participants can compare and validate their current practices for
managing systems against those of peer companies to identify
optimum approaches for application at their company. By identifying
better methods, utilities can improve efficiency, reliability, and safety.
