What happened at this Week’s Meeting? – Wednesday 26th February

2014

Host – Rotarian Nigel Causton

Club Business & Fellowships Meeting (No Guests or Speaker)

Meeting commenced with a starter of fish cakes and salad followed by Pork chops, green beans, roast potatoes and carrots. The four way test was read out by host Nigel Causton, after a little bit of help from President Peter. Secretary’s report – Secretary had done a very good disappearing act so there was no report from John. Treasurer’s report – Tony Horne read out the treasurer’s report which showed that club was in a healthy state and there was no need to call in the administrators, no questions were asked and Tony was free to relax for the evening. Paul Parfrey spoke about the Barge trip and that the Swindon Epilepsy Support Group in conjunction with Swindon Phoenix had hired a Barge from the Bruce Trust for one week 17th – 24th May 2014. Five Captains are being trained over the weekend of 25th, 26th and 27th April. During the Hire period in May, two Captains will be required each day along with two crew members; ten guests would also be allowed for each day. Three of the days are dedicated to the Swindon Epilepsy Support Group members and families and three further days would be open to other charity groups and organisations. Nominations of any charities or organisations were needed for the three days. (EDS NOTES - If members or readers of the Birdy have any suggestions please email Paul at [email protected]. For obvious reasons not all the nominations will be successful as there are only 3 days available) President Peter explained why the Polio day charity fun run had been cancelled due to the bad weather leading upto the event. Geoff Beale spoke on membership and that potential new member Adam Wainwright would come along to a further meeting before a seven day letter would be sent out with a view to Adam becoming a full member of Swindon Phoenix. Geoff also reported that he had received 19 replies to his email regarding the Club Survey and that he had collated the information which had been reported back to council. Geoff will send a copy of the results out to all Phoenix Club Members. Andy Gleed was granted a leave of absence owing to work commitments. Mike Slipper asked that hosts could notify Paul Parfrey of there guest speakers at a minimum of two to three weeks notice so that club website can be updated, it had been noted that people from outside the club had asked about guest speakers as they would like to attend meetings and listen to our guest speakers. Barbara Goulding spoke for Swindon Rotary and that they were organising a long weekend away from Friday 2nd May until Monday 5th May 2014 to Normandy in France, there would be a full weekend of visits with an English guide, cost of the weekend was £349.00 per person for a group of 30 and if they could attract more then the cost would be £324.00 per person, bed and breakfast would be included and the evenings would be at your leisure. (EDS NOTES – see Barbara’s email later in this Birdy) Peter Newsome handed out the Round Robin and the food menu for the President’s ball on the 30th May 2014; please fill these in as soon as possible.

Jokes on the ‘Wing’ (from the Editor in Thailand!!...don’t blame the deputy Ed) Wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6. A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had avocados." If you're a woman, I'm sure you're going back to read it again! Men will get it the first time. My work is done here ------------------------------------------------------ WIFE: “There is trouble with the car. It has water in the carburettor.” HUSBAND: “Water in the carburettor? That's ridiculous." WIFE: “I tell you the car has water in the carburettor." HUSBAND: “You don't even know what a carburettor is. I'll check it out. Where's the car?” WIFE: “In the pool” ------------------------------------------------------ THIS IS A FRIGHTENING STATISTIC, PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST WORRYSOME IN RECENT YEARS: 25% of the women in this country are on medication for mental illness. That's scary. It means 75% are running around untreated. ------------------------------------------------------ A young man wanted to get his beautiful blonde wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary. So he decided to buy her a cell phone. He showed her the phone and explained to her all of its features. Meg was excited to receive the gift and simply adored her new phone. The next day Meg went shopping. Her phone rang and, to her astonishment, it was her husband on the other end. “Hi Meg,” he said, “how do you like your new phone?” Meg replied, “I just love it! It's so small and your voice is clear as a bell, but there's one thing I don't understand though...” “What's that, sweetie?” asked her husband. “How did you know I was at Tesco’s?” ------------------------------------------------------ Husband and wife had a tiff. Wife called up her mom and said, “He fought with me again, I am coming to live with you.” Mom said, “No darling, he must pay for his mistake. I am coming to live with you.” ------------------------------------------------------ Today's Short Reading from the Bible... From Genesis: “And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth.” Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!
