V6 Roar ~ October 2016 DISTRICT 201 V6 APRIL 2017 Welcome to all readers of our V6 Roar Newsletter. Although Margaret and I have completed our Official Club Visits, we have enjoyed our activities for the Month of March, which started off with the 201V6 “Camp Leo” as reported in the February Roar Newsletter. On Saturday 18 th March 2017 we attended the Wangaratta 61 st Charter Anniversary Dinner which again, was a very pleasant evening, congratulations to the Club in the way they Celebrate their Clubs Anniversary which included cutting the cake, which was yummy. On the 19 Th March 2017 we attended the V District Leo of the Year final at Vermont where Leo Matthew Chen and our own V6 Leo Emily Major contested the final. The Lions Club of South Vermont provided a very nice lunch and the facilities at the Vermont Secondary College were perfect for the occasion. It was a pity that there were no Leos present to support Leo Matthew and Leo Emily, however Emily had eight familiar faces supporting her, and all of our V6 Lions Family wish her well in the final to be held in Hobart at the National Convention. It was also great to have International Director Tony Benbow in attendance, and thank you to PDG Les Harrison for the way you conducted the program as MC. On the 21 ST March 2017 the Katamatite Lions Club arranged a “Barefoot Bowls Challenge” at the Mulwala Golf Club, where around 40 Lions “turned up” to take on the challenge to raise funds for the Yarrawonga Turban Angels project. All was set in place to start the games, but unfortunately as soon as we all assembled at the side of the greens it started to rain, so we all went inside to chat, and have some nibbles and of course have something to wash it down. Congratulations to the Katamatite Lions Club for this initiative as it ended up being a good night for fellowship with Lions from surrounding Clubs. On Friday the 24 Th March 2017 Margaret and I had the great pleasure of attending the Barooga Debutante Ball as invited Guests. What a fantastic night and experience this was as eleven Debutantes and their partners presented themselves to Margaret and myself. The Barooga Lions Club have been doing Debutante Balls for 24 years, and member Jeanne Dodd has “been in charge” of this event for 20 years, so congratulations and well done to Lion Jeanne and the Barooga Lions Club for providing this fantastic night and opportunity for the Young people in the surrounding communities. Tungamah Lions Club hosted the District Youth of the Year Final at the Football Club Facilities, which was very well attended. Prior to the final we had Lunch at the Tungamah Hotel who provided a Menu for our Members, Parents and Visitors to choose from. The final was contested by six young lady, who were fantastic and they would have made it extremely difficult for the judges to select a winner. However the overall winner was Emma Hooppell representing the Albury Lions Club, we also wish her well in the V District final at Kialla on the 8 Th April 2017. Thank you to the Tungamah Lions Club for hosting the final, and also to Project Chairman VDGE Norm Walkington who was MC for the Final. Margaret and I attended the Zone 4 and 5 Zone Meeting at the Tongala Hotel on the 29 Th March 2017, and as always, there was a good attendance at the Meeting. Thank you Zone Chairman PDG Hedley Moon and Helen Hastie for conducting a great meeting. Guest speakers were Lion Sue Loader who passed on information regarding Lions Cakes, with a special mention regarding the “Lions 100 Year Centenary Cake Tin”, please speak to Lion Sue for details regarding orders for this cake. Lion John Loader spoke about Prostrate Awareness and also pointed out where the Lions money goes to support the development of medical services for research and treatment of Prostate Cancer.

DISTRICT 201 V6 APRIL 2017

Welcome to all readers of our V6 Roar Newsletter.

Although Margaret and I have completed our Official

Club Visits, we have enjoyed our activities for the

Month of March, which started off with the 201V6

“Camp Leo” as reported in the February Roar

Newsletter.

On Saturday 18th March 2017 we attended the

Wangaratta 61st Charter Anniversary Dinner which

again, was a very pleasant evening, congratulations

to the Club in the way they Celebrate their Clubs

Anniversary which included cutting the cake, which

was yummy.

On the 19Th March 2017 we attended the V District

Leo of the Year final at Vermont where Leo Matthew

Chen and our own V6 Leo Emily Major contested

the final.

The Lions Club of South Vermont provided a very

nice lunch and the facilities at the Vermont

Secondary College were perfect for the occasion. It

was a pity that there were no Leos present to

support Leo Matthew and Leo Emily, however Emily

had eight familiar faces supporting her, and all of

our V6 Lions Family wish her well in the final to be

held in Hobart at the National Convention.

It was also great to have International Director Tony

Benbow in attendance, and thank you to PDG Les

Harrison for the way you conducted the program as

MC.

On the 21ST March 2017 the Katamatite Lions Club

arranged a “Barefoot Bowls Challenge” at the

Mulwala Golf Club, where around 40 Lions “turned

up” to take on the challenge to raise funds for the

Yarrawonga Turban Angels project. All was set in

place to start the games, but unfortunately as soon

as we all assembled at the side of the greens it

started to rain, so we all went inside to chat, and

have some nibbles and of course have something to

wash it down.

Congratulations to the Katamatite Lions Club for this

initiative as it ended up being a good night for

fellowship with Lions from surrounding Clubs.

On Friday the 24Th March 2017 Margaret and I had

the great pleasure of attending the Barooga

Debutante Ball as invited Guests. What a fantastic

night and experience this was as eleven Debutantes

and their partners presented themselves to

Margaret and myself.

The Barooga Lions Club have been doing

Debutante Balls for 24 years, and member Jeanne

Dodd has “been in charge” of this event for 20

years, so congratulations and well done to Lion

Jeanne and the Barooga Lions Club for providing

this fantastic night and opportunity for the Young

people in the surrounding communities.

Tungamah Lions Club hosted the District Youth of

the Year Final at the Football Club Facilities, which

was very well attended. Prior to the final we had

Lunch at the Tungamah Hotel who provided a Menu

for our Members, Parents and Visitors to choose

from. The final was contested by six young lady,

who were fantastic and they would have made it

extremely difficult for the judges to select a winner.

However the overall winner was Emma Hooppell

representing the Albury Lions Club, we also wish

her well in the V District final at Kialla on the 8Th

April 2017. Thank you to the Tungamah Lions Club

for hosting the final, and also to Project Chairman

VDGE Norm Walkington who was MC for the Final.

Margaret and I attended the Zone 4 and 5 Zone

Meeting at the Tongala Hotel on the 29Th March

2017, and as always, there was a good attendance

at the Meeting. Thank you Zone Chairman PDG

Hedley Moon and Helen Hastie for conducting a

great meeting.

Guest speakers were Lion Sue Loader who passed

on information regarding Lions Cakes, with a special

mention regarding the “Lions 100 Year Centenary

Cake Tin”, please speak to Lion Sue for details

regarding orders for this cake.

Lion John Loader spoke about Prostrate Awareness

and also pointed out where the Lions money goes to

support the development of medical services for

research and treatment of Prostate Cancer.

Lion Ken Hastie gave a talk and a short slide show

on the Licola Special Needs Camp, which showed

the facilities available for the attendees.

It is hoped that Clubs will please consider providing

the opportunity to send children from their

community to this fantastic Lions Wilderness

Adventure Camp.

On Sunday the 2ND April our V6 District held the

“Membership Information Day” at the Yarrawonga

Lions Clubrooms. It was great to have around 50

Lions Club Members in attendance, who listened to

Presenters PDG Ann Eldridge and PDG Brenda

Henderson and assisted by PDG Stephen

Kazenwadel and Lion Lee Walkington pass on very

useful and important messages on how our clubs

can encourage more people to join our fantastic

Volunteer Lions Organisation, and most of all, retain

them in our clubs.

On behalf of our V6 District I would like to thank all

of the presenters, and the Yarrawonga Lions Club

for hosting this very important day for our V6 clubs

and District, and also to “Head Chef” Lion Debbie

Van Corler and her Yarrawonga Club Members for

providing morning and afternoon tea and also an

enjoyable lunch, well done to all concerned on the

day.

It is now up to all of us to pass the information that

we have gained from the day onto our clubs, so that

we can achieve a good result for our March to May

(and beyond) Membership Campaign.

Another Reminder. Could all Incoming Club Officers (and continuing

officers) and interested club members, please

attend one of the forthcoming “Club Development

Days” which will be held on the 23Rd April 2017 at

Corowa or on the 30TH April 2017 at Echuca.

Even if you have previously attended one of these

(formerly known as the “Incoming Officer Training

Days”) there is always something new to be learnt,

and it is good to be involved in the “open

discussion” on these days as we learn a lot from

each other, which is helpful for the development of

all of our clubs.

Please also consider the request from the Australian

Lions Foundation to support “those in need” in the

area of the terrible Cyclone and Flooding disaster in

Queensland with your Clubs

donation, all big or small

donations will help.

On behalf of our V6 District, we thank Rob McLean from Alpine Drilling in Wangaratta for his generous donation of this shipping container.

After a lick of paint and the addition of Lions stickers on the container it was ready to be handed over to the Barooga Lions Club to store

the products collected for the hampers, prior to their delivery to the Dairy Farmers In Crisis and others in need.

PDG Tome Little and DG Peter Poels were pleased to hand over the container to President Lynda to be put into service as soon as possible. This will make a great deal of difference to store food items safely. Thanks again Rob .

EMERGENCY RELIEF EFFORTS BENEFIT FROM DONATION

Around 50 Lions from across our District attended the Membership Information Day, Sunday 2nd April at the newly refurbished Yarrawonga “Woolshed” Club Rooms.

The day was a great opportunity to learn about retaining members, getting younger members into our clubs, looking at new ideas and new projects. PDG's Ann Eldridge and Brenda Henderson travelled from Melbourne to assist with the day.

Sharing their expertise and knowledge with all, encouraging members to look for new and exciting ideas to regenerate the enthusiasm of their members.

In 2010 Australian Lions membership was 32,000. In 2016 it had dropped to 26,000, a fall of 6000 in six years. Presently our District has 1308 members, a fall of around 48 so far this year. If it drops below 1250 we could be up for redistricting, making our district larger to keep it viable.

Some clubs have their own small brochure on Lions & their town at every community function they attend. Another thought was to have a white board

at events headed ”What does your town need”.

Maybe they would join to help get ‘their” project up & going ????? Just some thoughts. To connect with your community to see what is needed not just keep on with old projects and events that may have had their day.

PDG Steve Kazenwadel spoke about retention and the need to keep members informed and interested so they enjoy the experience of being a Lion.

Most of all, to listen to members, their ideas and suggestions, even if they are new and different.

Special thanks to Yarrawonga Lions for a great lunch provided.

Region 6 Youth of the Year Final was con-

ducted on Sunday 12th. March at the Com-

mercial Club, some 48 Lions, parents and

grandparents witnessed six very talented

young ladies face the impromptu questions

and then the prepared speeches, the

speeches covered varied and very interest-

ing topics, as Kath Parker, the spokesper-

son for the judges said in her summary,

each topic gave an insight into the lives of

each of these remarkable young ladies.

Kath Parker is the principal of Lavington

East primary school the other two judges

were Rebecca Rousell who is a financial

adviser with NAB and Mavis Gardiner is a

retired medical receptionist and is involved

in public speaking, and has judged many

Club level YOTY and also a couple of Re-

gional finals.

The day ran smoothly and along with Zone

Chairman Gerry Hellman we both feel it is

well worth all the organisation that goes

into these finals. Da-

On Saturday 8th April, the State Final of the Lions

Youth of the Year was held at the “Wool Shed” Kialla.

Our contestant Emma Hooppell has her turn to answer the two impromptu questions, as always, she did this extremely well, then came her time to present her prepared speech, on “Wasted Time”. Emma encouraged us all to make the most of the time we have and that there was no “Right Time” to do something.

Now was an appropriate time to do something for someone else, not when you grow up. Emma held the audiences’ attention with her strong voice and stimulating speech.

The winner of the Public Speaking section was Emma Hooppell representing V6 and the Lions Club of Albury. The overall winner was Joshua Cordina V2, representing the Lions Club of Werribee.

Congratulations to Emma, you did us proud.

ALBURY

Albury Lions Club hosted guest speaker Rowan Chalmers Borella, son of Albert Borella. VC recipient of WW1 The story is very interesting. Mounting farm cost became too much and he left the farm to join the Army enlisting in 1915. To be able to enlist, he left Tennant Creek by foot to travel to Darwin.

He travelled 140 miles to Renner Springs, swimming through engorged creeks during the peak of humid wet season. He then rode horseback to Katherine, hopped on back of horse drawn mail coach to Pine Creek and eventually jumped on the train to Darwin. Darwin did not take enlistments for the army so he had to go to Queensland to enlist.

He arrived in Townsville on 8th March by boat from Darwin where he became one of the first men from the Northern Territory to enlist for active service in WW1.

Albert first went to

Gallipoli as a private and after 2 months was commissioned to Lieutenant.

By 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal, was mentioned by Winston Churchill in Military dispatches and finally received the Victoria Cross.

The re-enactment of his earlier journey from Tennant Creek to Darwin was performed by his Grandson, Richard Borella, on the horse named Bushranger, he was given a hero's welcome in Darwin on arrival.

A History Museum has been dedicated to Albert Borella in Tennant Creek and was officially opened 31st March (last week), Roan, his son and wife Mary were in attendance at the opening.

Albury Lions Club were represented at the V6 District Membership Information Day held at Yarrawonga Lions Club rooms on Sunday 2nd April. The forum was well attended, with 48-members attending. Ann Elderidge and Brenda Henderson gave excellent informative presentation on encouraging us to gain new members. Each club agreed we are in grave need to enlist new members as our diminishing numbers are of great concern.

Owing to age, ill health, retirement of members and movement of families are seen as part of our problem, sometimes dissatisfaction within the club is also a problem to be investigated

Our Host Club supplied a very enjoyable lunch and great friendship, all in all it was a fantastic day. Some members, including myself, were shown the 12 machines and 8 over lockers used to make the Turbines for those battling cancer.

This is a very worthwhile Project and the club is very proud of their efforts. Well done Yarrawonga.

Message from the Editor:

As this is my last edition of the V6 Roar, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support since taking over the Roar a few years ago. Thanks for your stories and photos that have contributed to making this one of the best District Newsletters. PDG Lynn Fredericks will take over from me next month. Please continue to send your Clubs stories and photos to [email protected]

Bunnings – Leukaemia Foundation BBQ – 18th

March 2017

The Albury Club was asked to run the BBQ at Bun-

nings on the 18th March in association wit the Leu-

kaemia Foundation’s “World’s Greatest Shave”

and of course we obliged.

As always Leo and his band of helpers went

smoothly into action, cooking and dispensing snags,

onions, bread and various condiments, as well as

the odd drink. It was a busy day with nearly 400

sausages sold but as always, a lot of fun was had

so the time went quickly.

ALBURY

The BOSS supervising things Glen carries out quality control watched by an

anxious chef

The highlight of the day was Ash Gillespie losing his

locks as part of “World’s Greatest Shave”. Ash

was a former Senior and Rover Scout, also a CFS

volunteer. His family has been touched by Leukae-

mia and he decided to do his bit to help find a cure.

His tresses were to be sold to a wigmaker to add to

the funds raised. When he was through, even his

mother didn’t recognise him – would you?

A lot of fun and all in a good cause. We took $1,145 on the day and at the Board Meeting, a unanimous decision to donate the costs associated with the BBQ and make our donation to the Leukaemia Foundation up to $1,200 – a great result for all con-cerned. Thanks to all Lions who assisted with this project.

Going going gone!!!!

A proud group of Albury Lions attended the

District Final of the Lions Youth of the Year

competition to cheer on our contestant, Emma

Hooppell.

Emma was extremely good and won both the

Public Speaking and Overall. Emma went onto

the State Final to represent our District.

Well done Emma.

MONTHLY MARKET

As usual the market was held on the last Saturday of the

which deterred some of the stallholders. However, it turned

popular.

CORRYONG Official Club Visit to the Corryong Lions Club

on the 1ST February 2017 by D G Peter Poels.

On the morning after our club visit Margaret and I

together with Cabinet Secretary Julie Simpson who

came with us for this visit, met up with Corryong

Club Secretary Lorraine Griffiths and Lion Ros

McKenzie who took us to their Clubs Community

Hall. The hall was previously just a “tin shed” which

they obtained close to $550,000 in Grants for, to

renovate it to the standard as per photos.

As can be seen the outside of the building looks

impressive with a concrete drive to the front door,

which has an overhead cover where the cars pull

up. When entering the front door it leads into the

huge main hall that has a polished wood floor.

There have been

new toilets

installed including

a toilet for

disabled visitors,

shower facilities

have also been

provided.

The most impressive area is the kitchen which is

very long (that can be seen in the photo above)

with a bench in the middle of it that has storage

facilities underneath it.

The appliances are all commercial quality which

includes a dishwasher, two large ovens and a large

walk in refrigerator as well as other appliances that

are normally in a commercial kitchen.

The kitchen also has two reverse cycle air

conditioners, and they would make it a very

comfortable area for “Chefs” to work in. There is

also a storage room and a Lions Club Meeting

Room at the rear of the building, where the club

records and memorabilia is kept.

Although the club only has fourteen members, they

cater for weddings (four in February) and other

community functions, and also hire out the hall

when requested.

Unfortunately due to their location the Secretary is

unable to send emails to the Roar Newsletter

publisher Lee Walkington to tell their story, so

hopefully I have been able to give a glimpse of

what a small club with “fourteen happy members”

has achieved with hard work and determination for

their community.

They should be

very proud of their

achievement.

KERANG

At our meeting, Thursday 13th April, our highlight

news of the night was that we were happy to

announce that we received an ALF GRANT for a

new chemotherapy chair for Kerang District Health

Oncology Dept. Together with the $1000

donated from John's year, the department will be

able to order the chair very soon. It takes 10-12

weeks to be delivered.

The next important

news was finally

giving Ron H. his 35

year Chevron! Well

done Ron on this

achievement and

hope you have many

more years of service!

Good Friday Appeal

14th April 2017

Another big day for

Kerang Lions with the RCH Good Friday Appeal.

Money counting started at 8.00 am at the Lions

Den with Jen and all her helpers gathering for a big

day of opening cans/ tubs, counting, welcoming

collectors and sending them on their route!

Meanwhile John, Sue, Cheryl and Greg were

manning the Driver Reviver site and feeding all the

hungry early travellers with sausages and fish and

coleslaw as well as serving tea, coffee and water!

The Pitstop crew with their games and the Barista

coffee van were back again as well and were all

very busy again as well. We estimated more than

600 people stopped to have a break Friday

morning, which shows that our site has achieved its

aim of getting drivers to refresh before continuing

on their journeys.

Thanx again to Toll Holdings for sponsoring Driver

Reviver and also to TAC for including Kerang in

their Pitstop agenda and we hope to have them on

board with us next Easter! Our donations for the

Good Friday Appeal totalled $990 which is

magnificent and we thank all the motorists for their

generosity and appreciation!

We are proud to announce that Kerang has raised

$15,343.92 for the RCH Good Friday Appeal for

2017! This includes $6,000 from the Royal Hotel

which is fantastic! Thank you to all the tin rattlers,

shops, Raffle buyers and motorists for your

generosity of time and money. Well done to Jen

and all her helpers for their long hours of counting

all the money and organization. Big job that does

not go unnoticed! Thanx to all those who provided

food for the workers!

Everyone who gave up their Good Friday Holiday

now deserve to put their feet up and reflect on their

great efforts and how it will help those very needy

sick children!

Big weekend for Kerang Lions! We had a good day at the Kerang Community Market feeding many happy Market goers! With the 60 mm of rain we had on Thursday/ Friday, the Kerang Show and Shine had to be moved to the Kerang Fire Brigade training track at Atkinson Park.

Thank goodness the day turned out sunny after a foggy start! Great to see so many car enthusiasts and visitors admiring the cars!

We had a big day feeding the masses, bacon and egg sandwiches, sausages and steak and chicken sangers and hamburgers! Thank you to all the workers on both days - great team effort! Well done to all the organizers!

ECHUCA

Ken Walter has completed his last day as Royal Children’s Hospital Chairperson for our region.

Over the 24 years he has been involved the club has raised over $1.6 million. This year the figure was just over $80,000, with a bit more to come in. It is interesting that past Lions also help every year.

A couple of years ago, Ken received an International Presidents award for his efforts when Echuca Lions hosted our District Convention.

EH HOLDEN CAR CLUB

The Echuca Lions were asked to cater for the whole weekend. In the end we only did Breakfast and Lunch on Easter Saturday, whilst we parcelled out Breakfast Easter Sunday to Kyabram, and Lunch to Shepparton Lions.

Our club will net more than $5,000 for the day. As you can see it was a big day, with nearly all Lions involved, as well as Lions Ladies. Opinions from the EH Holden Club, including your locals John and Jack Doyle, have said it is the best catering job ever.

The photo above is of next years President, Des Shestedt, current President, and new

Chairperson of the RCH Appeal, Laurie Stewart, and of course Ken Walter.

GREGA-DUO Clapping, dancing, singing and just pure entertainment – what more could anyone want?? That was what we had at Urana MPS on Thursday afternoon, 16th March when Grega-Duo came to visit. John (Rockliff) grew up around Urana and is a regular visitor back here so took great pleasure in showing his mate, George, around town before arriving for their gig.

We were able to watch them set up, something they have had quite a bit of practise doing, and then that wonderful music started. There was Elvis (of course), Slim Dusty, John Paul Young and much, much more, including a wonderful finale of “What a Wonderful World” - (or should we call it an encore??)

Residents, community members and staff had smiles on their faces the whole time – even when John told a joke – and it was such a fun time for everyone.

After the performance we all moved to the dining room where the Hotel Services staff served up BBQ sausages with all the trimmings.

We also shared some refreshments. Thank you to the Lockhart Lions Club, whose recycling efforts provided the funds for this great afternoon. There have been nothing but positive comments from residents, staff and community members since then. Everyone is keen to have a repeat

LOCKHART

LOCKINGTON

Wednesday 12th April, Lockington Lions met at the "Living Heritage Museum" for their Dinner Meeting.

This was a special night, Charter & Life Member Frank Dallard was presented with a V6 "Chris August Award".

Frank is already a Melvin Jones Fellow, has received an International Presidents Medal along with many more awards.

Frank announced that at 89 and with his health failing, he would resign from Lions after 43 years of devoted service.

"Lions was the best thing to happen to this District" was his closing remarks. Frank is clearly a highly respected and valued member of the Club, who will remain a member for life.

Guest speaker for the night was Ray Kemp telling of his travels to Turkey for the ANZAC Centennial service.

A Silver “Members Award” was presented to Lion Bill Roberts for his continued work to keep the Membership growing.

A great night, a small club that are making a big difference in their community.

ROCHESTER

Members have been busy over the past month, but first we are proud and offer our congratulations to two of our young Leo’s and Youth of Year contestant.

Leo Emily Major won the District final of Leo of the Year then going on to take out the Victorian Leo of the Year against stiff opposition. and now goes to Hobart MD Convention as the Victorian representative.

Annette Waters, who organized the Leo weekend activities at the recent Leo’s camp at Deniliquin has, I believe, applied as a MD Leo adviser. We wish her well in this application.

Olivia Dimovski won the Youth of the Year Region final held at Lockington on 12th March. From there she went on to the District Final held at Tungamah and performed very well.

However Emma Hooppell, representing the Albury Lions Club, was the overall winner on the day plus taking out the Public Speaking award as well. Hopefully Olivia will see fit to have another go next year.

Many thanks to those Lions who helped at the Traders Breakfast and Mural sausage sizzle.

The committee are extremely busy with the Centennial Project and Sportsman’s Night.

At the Combined Zone Meeting of Zones 4 & 5 held at the Tongala Hotel on Wednesday 29 March Lion John Loader, District Chairperson for Hearing Dogs, presented Rochester Lions Club President Bruce Major with a Banner Patch in recognition of their sponsorship of a Hearing Dog to a local resident.

Lion John also spoke briefly about one of his other portfolios – Prostate Cancer giving some shocking statistics about the decease. It is estimated that one in seven men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and nine Australian men die from the decease every single day. The Mater Institute works around the clock on Research through the help from Lions donations.

Lion Ken Hastie spoke about Licola Camp and presented a short slide show showing the camp and what great facilities are available at Licola to make it an experience of a lifetime

particularly for those with disabilities. Clubs are urged to get involved with Licola Wilderness Village by helping out with working bees, sponsoring children for the Special Needs and School Holiday Adventure camps or a weekend away for your club.

Twenty one Lions attended the meeting from nine of the eleven clubs.

EMAIL ADDRESSES: THE 21ST CENTURY PHONE NUMBER

Why is consistency important for Clubs?

The current mix of email formats across the

organisation (eg. district sponsored, personal, gmail),

makes it difficult to ensure important information

reaches the right people at the right time.

From a General Public perspective, constantly

changing contact details are confusing, especially if

they only contact Clubs once a year.

From a Club management perspective, important

activity history may be lost during change-over.

From a National Office perspective, multiple internal

system currently need to be updated annually to

ensure effective communication with Clubs.

By providing Clubs with tools that facilitate timely and

effective communication, the organisation is better

equipped to respond to community needs.

Microsoft has generously donated 1500 licenses of

Office 365 to the MD201 National Office, a significant

cost saving. This software is widely used in the

commercial and NFP sectors.

Uniform email addresses, using Office 365, will

enable improved communication across all levels of

the organisation. Consider the benefit for your Club

and its FREE!

HOW CAN WE COMMUNICATE MORE EFFECTIVELY?

LIONS SPONSORED CAMPS

CLUB CHAIRMAN CHECKLIST

For complete clarity you should also refer to the more detailed Vital Information Checklist.

Please note that when approaching schools (staff, principal) that you should explain the purpose of the Lions Sponsored Camps is to help those in the community that need it.

To help families suffering in some form or another – the interpretation of “disadvantaged” is very broad. However, it is advisable when speaking with families that the term “disadvantaged” is not over used. It would be better to explain that the child(ren) are being offered an opportunity to have a School Holiday Adventure Camp and a chance to get away and have an experience of a lifetime.

If asked, one could explain simply that the school have identified that a child(ren) as deserving of the opportunity.

• Receive Club pack (letter, application form, vital information checklist, school holiday information brochure, payment procedure)

• Obtain Club’s agreement re. number of children to be sponsored

• Send Club cheque with Club Application form to Intake Coordinator (now in Licola

• Operations at Licola). Alternatively, can pay by EFT following guideline (see payment procedure).

• Make sure you fill in all fields in the Club Application Form to enable a speedy response and the sending out of your Children Application Form(s)

• Receive Campers Application forms and brochures from Licola Operations. Once

received make sure you circle the correct Camp Date, fill in your name and contact details as well as same on the Holiday Adventure Camp Application Form brochure

• Source Children (you should already have started this process) by speaking with local schools/ other agencies.

• Check cut off dates and agree when to pick up forms – allow enough time to check and return to families if required.

• We cannot guarantee places for forms received after the cut off dates. REMIND schools/ families and respectfully PUSH PUSH PUSH….!

• Collect forms from school or families. Follow up repeatedly during this process.

• Remind and CHASE CHASE CHASE (Do not underestimate the importance of this).

• Once received, check forms for completeness and refer back to care giver/ family if required.

• Check in particular child’s age (8-11 years at start of camp only please), minimum two contact numbers for family, medical information, specific info, and authorisation.

• Contact families to see if children require transport to/from coach pick up and drop off point. (If required organise Lions Members to assist)

• Make a note of child(rens) name and contact details for your own records.

• Send completed and checked forms to the Intake Coordinator in Licola AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I

• f any issues arise don’t hesitate to contact the Intake Coordinator on 03-5148-8791

• Keep in frequent contact with family groups from form completion up to and including the day before camp to ensure all is in place. Again, this is very important.

The newly installed river steps & ramp, which allows safe access and removal to/from the river for all abilities.

This is a truly a unique design that will be used by some of our wheelchair bound guests next week.
