The Bay Academy Dreamz Team consists of 6 students from the Science Talent Program. Dr. Cubbin their
teacher assigned the Verizon App Challenge to his students as a STEM related project. The app challenge is a
nationwide contest in which middle and high school students are challenged to develop concepts for mobile
apps that solve a problem in their community. The challenge is an activity that teaches collaboration, critical
thinking, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship, as well as STEM skills and coding. It builds on students’
excitement about technology and aims to equip them with skills they need to succeed in the jobs of the
future. The Dreamz Team created their concept to solve the problem of Insomnia. They collected data on
Insomnia and how it affects teenagers. Their submission consisted of an essay on the app concept as well as a
three-minute video.
The Dreamz Team won the Best in State Award and Best in Region Award. The school received 5K each
student was awarded a t-shirt, trophy and tablet. The team moved to the next phase of the competition. The
Fan Favorite Award is chosen by popular vote. The team’s video submission was posted on the app challenge
website, and the public was invited to vote for their favorite. With over 12,300 votes, The Dreamz Team won
the Fan Favorite Award. The program will receive 15K and in-person and virtual training and support from
MIT to assist the team in building and publishing their app. Travel expenses will be provided to each member
of the team and each member’s accompanying parent/legal guardian to attend the national TSA conference in
Orlando, Florida.

On Monday, February 13, 2017, PS 90 held its first open house for its new magnet program. PS 90 is now going to be known as, PS 90, The Magnet School for Environmental Studies and Community Wellness. During the open house, parents were treated to groups of students, as young as our Pre-Kindergarten, performing cheers in the gymnasium. Students led each group in a call and response fashion. Following this amazing demonstration of coordination and agility, parents were welcomed to the auditorium where the fifth grade performed 2 songs which are a part of this Friday’s Black History Month Concert. Parents were in awe of the quality of the students’ voices.
The excitement did not end with the show. Parents then went on a tour of the building to see STEM in action. Their Pre-
Kindergarten students chose pictures and materials to understand engineering concepts and build what they viewed in the picture. Kindergarten students learned about Binary Code and what that code means to a computer. Fourth graders created Oobleck, after discussing the properties of matter, and then tried to apply its use to real world situations. Fifth graders simulated digestion to understand what happens to food once it reaches our stomachs. The entire school community took part in this event and a great time was had by all. We can’t wait for the next Open House!

High School News
The Office of Student Enrollment welcomes all rising eighth grade students and first-time ninth graders applying to high school for the
2017-2018 school year!
High School Applications were due to school counselors on December 1. Students will get their results letter in March 2017.
These results letters also include information for students who participated in Specialized High Schools Admissions, letting you know if
you received offer(s) to those schools. If you receive offers to a program from the High School Application and from a Specialized High
School, you must choose one.
Middle School News All fifth graders now have the option to apply to new middle school programs for this fall. Students received their New Middle School
Application the week of February 6 from their elementary schools.
If you’d like to apply, simply submit the application to your school counselor by Wednesday, March 1. Visit Middle School
Resources and click on each school page under "New Middle Schools" to learn more about your child’s new middle school options.
If you don’t want to apply, you don’t need to take any action—just wait for your notification letter in April, which will have your middle
school match for next September.
If you just moved to New York City and are not yet enrolled at a school for the 2016-2017 school year, learn how to enroll on the New
Students page.

Parent/Guardian Survey- Coming in March
Every year, parents/guardians, teachers, and students in grades 6-12 take the NYC School Survey. The survey helps school administrators and pre-K program leaders understand what key members of their school or program’s community think about the learning environment and the quality of education children are receiving. The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of a school or program’s community about how to make the school or program a better place for learning.
Each survey is placed in a green envelope, which contains the survey itself and a prepaid return envelope.
Families can also take the survey online – in any of the nine official DOE languages – using the eight-digit survey code found on their respective survey. Families completing the survey online should go to the NYC School Survey website (www.nycschoolsurvey.org), enter their eight-digit code, and complete the survey.

Parent Coordinator Spotlight Parent Coordinators are an important part of the school community. At your school they can help you with many
questions and issues while creating a welcoming school environment. This month District 21 would like to highlight the
Parent Coordinators at PS. 95. Mrs. Vanessa Gomez. and I.S. 98 Mrs. Caryn DiMari.
“Working as the Parent Coordinator at Public School 95 for the past three years has enabled me to build
strong bonds with parents and their families. It is rewarding helping parents navigate through the school
system and ease their concerns while reassuring them that they are being heard. I am the contact person for
the parents to help enrich their experience with the school community. Hosting over two hundred workshops
with topics from homework help, coping skills, test prep, and even painting murals has help me build
relationships and gain knowledge of the needs of individual families. It has been gratifying being able to listen to the
parent’s needs and wants and following through this year by establishing English classes for parents struggling with
communicating effectively with their children and school staff.”
As the Parent Coordinator of the Bay Academy for the past 3 years, and a dedicated employee of the NYC
DOE for the past 13 years, I've always been passionate about ensuring children have the opportunity to
receive a quality education. Additionally, as the mother of three young adults who have excelled within the
New York City school system, I have gained valuable knowledge into the importance that active school
faculty plays in a student's education. I have established strong relationships with parents, school personnel, students and
all community based organizations -- resources that I am excited to use to promote students' success.
Parent Teacher conference dates are citywide. However schools may decide to hold their conferences, on alternative
dates. Please check with your school.
