District 5910 News April 2016 Doris Lockey District Governor 2015-2016 Rotary District 5910 Rotarians and Rotary Friends: April is Maternal and Child Health Month. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotarians around the world provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Many Clubs in our District completed projects this year for this area of focus. Projects supported this need in our communities and others supported projects around the world. I normally wrap up my letter each month with a “did youknow” item about using our new Rotary on-line tools. Myrecommendation this month is for current and incomingofficers and directors to sign-up for the “Rotary Club Central”training course. It is definitely worth your time!

Hope you enjoy the newsletter and have an awesome Rotarymonth!

CLUB NEWS: Beaumont

International Women's Day: CelebratingWomen in RotaryBeaumont Rotary focused on acknowledgingInternational Women's Day 2016 with a specialmeeting focused on celebrating Women inRotary. The Club was fortunate enough to beable to host Anne Matthews, first woman to serveas Vice President of Rotary International, adirector and a trustee of the Foundation. Thearticle that follows was written by KrisNordstrom-McBride after attending the event inBeaumont.

"Anne Matthews: a Real Trailblazer inRotary"

by Kris Nordstrom McBride. A Rotary Moment

District 5910 Newsletter - April 2016 (Apr 01, 2016) http://rotary5910.org/bulletin/view/b151cda4-f4c7-4012-97ce-81912bf3...

We gathered inBeaumont to hearher speak. Shecame in honor ofThe InternationalDay of Women,March 8. She was atrailblazer in Rotary, her name oftenpreceded by thewords “the firstfemale to ...” Weexpected to hear ofheraccomplishments asa woman in Rotary.

But when she stepped to the podium, we were taken in acompletely different direction.

“She” is Dr. Anne Matthews, a southern woman of greatelegance and charisma and a member of the tiny RotaryClub of Columbia (S.C.) East, who became the first femalevice president of Rotary International in 2013. She wasalso the first woman elected to serve as both a director ofRotary International and as trustee of The RotaryFoundation.

Matthews was raised on a tobacco farm in South Carolina, the youngest of 15 children. She was raised with five olderbrothers still in the home, as the only girl in the youngestsibling group. From an early age, her father instilled in herthe belief that she could be and do anything, as long asshe was willing to do the work needed to excel. Herhusband passed away quite suddenly almost 20 years ago,at the young age of 53. Once she gathered her thoughtsand began to settle into a new life without him, she knewshe wanted and needed a change in direction. She hadgarnered many awards and career honors, and hadalways been a community volunteer, but with time on herhands and with no domestic obligations, she decided todevote the remainder of her life in service to Rotary andthe world. She knew that doing the work of The RotaryFoundation was where she was meant to be.

From medical missions to Guinea to digging water wells inNicaragua and polio immunizations in India, she has beenthere, on the front lines, in the trenches. She could havesat comfortably in a boardroom reading field reports orhosted dazzling fundraisers for The Foundation and left thehands-on work to the younger Rotarians, but she did not;she rolled up her sleeves, opened her pocketbook andsigned on to travel the often dangerous roads ofdeveloping countries to experience firsthand the work ofTRF.

League City Presents Informative Program

Between trips abroad, Matthews speaks to Rotary Clubsacross the nation.

“I am not here to talk about my accomplishments,” shesaid. “I am here to talk about yours. Yours because whenyou donate to TRF, you are part of each medical mission, each vaccination campaign, each victory.”

She gave us the statistics — 13 million people starve eachyear; 1 billion children go to bed hungry each evening;every 3 seconds, a child dies from malnutrition; 600,000women die annually because of a lack of healthcare; 40percent of the world’s population has no access to cleanwater; 26 percent of adults in the world are illiterate.

But more than that, she brought the work of TRF to life forus. With her lilting South Carolina accent, the elegance ofan experienced public speaker and the look in her eyes ofsomeone who has seen both the best and the most painfulthat life has to offer, she was a powerful voice for thework of Rotary. Do not be a “resume Rotarian,” she toldus. “What a waste that would be.”

Thank you, Dr. Matthews, for an insightful andunforgettable experience.
