    Principal’s Desk

    Dear Toastmasters,

Have you ever wondered what makes this program successful for an 18-year-old as well as for an 80-year-old?

Have you ever wondered why people across age, gender, religion, culture, nationalities and thought processes find value in the idea of Toastmasters? Well, the reason I believe is because we all have a child within us.

Does it not sound astonishing? Let me elaborate. If you look at a child, a child is someone who grows by leaps and bounds in the formative years. A child's vocabulary increases manifold in the formative years as compared to an adult. A child is not bothered about whether he or she is being judged. They just come out there, enjoy and make friends with those who help them. They have an open mind and a willingness to learn from everyone around them.

Friends, as Toastmasters, each one of us is like that child described above. When we come to Toastmasters meetings, we forget about our workplace, situations at home, personal or even financial challenges and just come to the meeting and enjoy the company of fellow Toastmasters.

With a child-like enthusiasm, we become a better version of ourselves and we take ownership of our own journey. And, so long as we have the curiosity, I am sure each one of us would keep coming back to Toastmasters. Those who believe that they have grown to an adult, exit Toastmasters, but those who manage to maintain their childlike curiosity, they continue to thrive at Toastmasters.

I urge you to discover, rekindle and realize the true potential of child in you as a Toastmaster.

"Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional" – Chili Davis

I believe that retaining our child-like wonder, spirit, and zest for life is what makes us really alive. All too often life has a way of deadening us with the monotony of routine. I try to make an effort to enjoy the small things in my life which I would otherwise have considered mundane.

How can we retain this child within us in our busy multitasking networking lives? These are things that have helped me see beauty in the everyday business of my life.

    - Approach each day with a sense of joy and gratefulness

    - Learn to enjoy the routine of small things in life – for eg. Perfectly ironing that shirt, the tasty chutney you made today, the lift that you get listening to your favourite song

    - Being happy is an attitude, I tell myself every day, learn it! :)

Many times I have heard phrases in Toastmasters meetings such as ‘unleash the chid in you’, ‘have child-like inquisitiveness’, ’find the child in you’, etc. At some point, I felt it’s kind of cliché and my mind used to switch off or get distracted when such phrases were used.

However, a few months ago, I attended a session from our past District Governor DTM T K Ramesh and the session was filled with several humorous anecdotes, one liners, stories where even a saint dances with delight. I have fallen out of my seat on several instances during the course of the speech, tears rolling out of joy and I can never forget that.

To top it all, one of the photographers captured the moment where I was laughing from ear to ear and shared it in the group. There were no inhibitions, no stress, just a laugh with happiness like a child. I saw a child in me at that time.

I reflected on that incident and believed that the child in you can be brought out in many ways, but one sure way of unleashing would be by the power of humour. Using humour at right instances would help you to influence your audience by making them laugh like a child. Message can be conveyed in a subtle way followed by that lighter moment.

Now extending this logic to our professional or personal life, can we make the people around us to laugh or relax using the right amount of humour which can help bring out the child in them?

Do you know the recent addition in Pathways, Engaging Humour has got several supporting resources and options to develop your Humorous speaking skills?

Get ready and deliver your next speech, we are waiting to unlock the child in us once again, because of you!

Raising two children at home has made me realize the most important quality of a child. Curiosity. It's so amazing how both my children look at the exact same object and ask totally different questions about it (sometimes, too many questions) ! One other unique trait in children is enthusiasm. How they squeal in delight when they touch a puppy, or dance in the rain, or get a new toy from their grandparents.

These same two traits seen in children, are important for us (adults) to sustain interest in anything that we are passionate about. Do you have that child-like curiosity and enthusiasm still alive in you? Have you come to a Toastmasters meeting, curious to know how the weekly roles you take will turn you into a better person? Have you been curious to find out what feedback you will receive for the speech you delivered with all your heart and soul?

The way you enthusiastically perform your roles, or motivate the other club members will go a long way in making the Toastmasters meetings fun and for great member experience. After all we learn best in moments of enjoyment!

The child in me loves to immerse himself in a sea of nostalgia, as I surf through life. It serves to entertain, educate and also bring forth the best memories that we have had. In this edition, as we immerse ourselves with our inner child, I am taken back to the first meeting that I had attended in Toastmasters as a guest, back in 2012, at Infosys, Mangalore, and I was immediately taken in by the enthusiasm of all members, and most importantly, Table Topics!!!! The childlike eagerness to participate, fuelled by the uncertainty of Table Topics was something that kept me coming again and again, for that elusive Table Topics Certificate!

Today, as we head into December, we are sure full of memories that we have made in the year, and this would sure bring forth some amazing Toastmasters memories of the year and the years gone by. And I would ask you, as a member, what was that first thing you felt in Toastmasters that made you come back again and again? What

keeps you as a Toastmaster and the child within you forever gushing forth? As you reminisce, introspect whether we are giving our members the same feeling of home that we have come to give to Toastmasters! Let's work towards building that exclusive experience for our guests and members, and let's excel in the love that we share in Toastmasters!

Thank you for being a part of our journey, thank you for being a part of this District. You make us better every day.

When I was a child, I wanted to grow up quickly. Adults seemed to know everything, they had all the freedom to do what they want. They did not have to ask for permission. So you can imagine my disappointment as I grew up and all my theories were disproven.

Years later, I now look at childhood through the eyes of my daughter. And the biggest lesson I learn is to be fearless. Fearless to change. Fearless to unlearn. Fearless in discomfort. And as an adult, I realize my biggest strength is the freedom to make choices. Freedom to explore my potential. Freedom to learn and grow.

My favourite quote by Marianne Williamson- “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
