Start shining all you pins and PHF medallions and find the ribbons that go with them so

they will be ready for the day.

Oh and I’m thinking the appropriate dress attire may include your dressing gown!!!!

But that will not stop you from formal wear underneath.

Rotary Club of Palm Beach Combined Meeting Lindsay Hemy approached me while at the Bunnings BBQ and asked that we have a shared meeting. He has suggested the date of 10th June but this is not as yet confirmed. He also suggested that we go to “The Well” in the village. I am in the process of contacting. More information when a date and venue can be locked in.

It will be a member’s only night.

Polio This Week: 15th May 2019 • On 9 May 2019, the World Health Organization received notification

of the detection of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) from an

environmental sample, collected on 20 April, in Seestan and Balochistan

province, Iran. The virus collected is an environmental sample only, and

no associated cases of paralysis have been detected. Genetic sequencing

confirmed it is linked to WPV1 circulating in Karachi, Pakistan.

• On 21 May 2019, taking advantage of the presence of major Global

Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) stakeholders attending the World

Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, the GPEI is hosting an informal

reception marking the launch of its new Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-

2023: To Succeed by 2023 – Reaching Every Last Child for a Polio-

Free World. Delegates who will be in Geneva are invited

• Summary of new viruses this week:

Pakistan—four wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases and four WPV1-

positive environmental samples;

Iran—one WPV1-positive environmental sample.

Water Projects in East Timor.

People in our society rightly take for granted that

they can turn on a tap and receive fresh water,

however this is not the case for many outlying

villages in East Timor where people usually

children have to carry water for up to and

sometimes in excess of 5 klm every day.

And even when they arrive back at the village

with the water it has to be boiled because of the

poor quality.

Max gave us a insight into the current and the proposed work

which is ongoing in East Timor. Max and his team have the

support of Rotarians from a number of Rotary Clubs not only

in WA but from around Australia.

A group from the Rotary Phillip Island and San Remo

together with Disaster Australia have just completed a water

Project in East Timor. They were able to carry out this

successful project with the help and experience passed on

by Max and his team.

The team are preparing for their next project in July where

they will lay a 40ml polly-pipe from a spring more than

4 klm to provide water to three villages along the way.

Vehicles can only go so far and then the materials have to

carried by hand the rest of the way.

The villagers are invited and encouraged to be totally involved

and to take ownership of the finished product and to maintain

the equipment long after the team have left.

Our club nominee for

RYLA 2019 was

Millie Evans.

Millie came along tonight

to tell us a little of her

experience and what

she gained from her week at RYLA 2019

Millie obviously had a great time, she

spoke of the camaraderie she enjoyed

with the other young people in attendance,

and how during some of the tasks how she

had to totally rely on others to complete

the exercise. It was a great experience.

Millie wished to thank our Rotary Club

for making it all possible

Guest Speaker: PP Max Bird

Please find attached the flyer that is about the play presented by Rockingham Theatre Company called Old Actors Never Die. It’s always a fun filled night out when attending the Rockingham Theatre! This is a fund raising event for the Rotary Club of Baldivis and here is how the fund raising works. When a ticket is purchased using the code: rotary a donation is applied to our club of $10 per ticket purchase. In order to receive a donation a minimum of 20 tickets must be sold. This only applies to bookings on opening night - Friday 7th June. Please support this fund raiser and share this news with family and friends. We are also very proud that our club members Sue Lawson and Jacki Gahan are both involved with this play. Don't miss out on tickets to this wonderfully put together play in our local community.

PE Wendy suggested that this press release from the City of Kwinana was worthy of inclusion

Zone

The Bike Rescue program at Kwinana’s Zone Youth Space came to the rescue of

local volunteer Adil Afzaal by donating a bike to him, when his was recently

stolen from Wellard Train Station.

Adil Afzaal is a Kwinana Youth Advisory Council (KYAC) member and used his bike to

volunteer. Around the time Adil’s bike was stolen, he was donating his time to mentor

a young person on how to ride their bike safely to their local train station, lock up their

bike and how to catch the train.

In late 2018, the Bike Rescue program - coordinated by Dismantle Inc. at the Zone

Youth Space - helped ten of Kwinana’s young people restore ten bikes.

These bikes were then donated to charities or to young people who are making a

difference and the community and are in need of a bike themselves.

Mayor Carol Adams said that she was proud of the City’s youth for helping out a fellow

young person in his time of need.

“Adil is so generous with his time at The Zone and it seemed fitting to help him out in

his time of need,” Mayor Adams said.

“The Bike Rescue program is terrific, as it has helped young people in Kwinana

develop new skills and enabled them to give back to their local community at the same

time,” she said.

Lawson Smith from Dismantle Inc. said he has loved seeing the community come

together to support Adil and for him to be benefitting from the work of his peers at the

Zone.

“I was incredibly grateful when the Zone and Dismantle called to say they were

donating a bike to me,” said Adil.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the

auto industry and stated,

"If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00

cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with

the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........ Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of

the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could

continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse

to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice

as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be

replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until

you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again

because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.
