AGM time comes around again, we held our Annual General Meeting tonight, our Audited Financial Report tabled and accepted, Amended Standing Orders presented and accepted. Some discussion centered around the differences between our Club Standing Orders, Rotary International and District By-Laws, decided to form a committee to address the issue. A number of club members and partners attended the St Vincents Fete last Sunday, Team John Iriks conducted a very successful Chocolate Wheel with the entire proceeds going to St Vincents Fete. Team Mike Nella operated our BBQ trailer providing ‘Gourmet Burgers’ while St Vincents themselves had a successful Sausage Sizzle next door. Altogether a very sizeable amount of cash was raised at what can only be described as a magnificently organised and conducted Fete, hearty congratulations must go to the St Vincents P&F Committee, what a great result. 5 Baldivis members will be visiting us next week as part of their ‘Scatter Meeting’ program, I’m sure they will be made most welcome.

Award to Lorraine Lucas. As it is difficult for Lorraine to attend a regular meeting, the award

to Lorraine will be made @ 6:45pm this Thursday at the Club Rooms. All members invited to

attend this 5 minute ceremony.

4/11 – Reminder - Ten Pin Bowling

5/11 – Reminder – 5 members from Baldivis Club will be visiting as part of their “scatter

meetings” program. Please make them welcome. This is not a partners night.

19/11 – Kwinana Industry Bus Trip. Commences at 16:30 from the club house, with bus

returning to club house for normal meeting (with meal).

Thanks to Bob T for arranging, Eric for driving and Chris for hosting. Cost will be $5

each to cover cost of bus. All seats are taken.

2/12 – Christmas Party for 10 less privileged local families. Kwinana Adventure Playground.

All members of the extended Rotary Club family are invited to participate.

3/12 DG’s Visit. This will be a partners night with the board meeting with the DG prior to the

meeting.

Thanks to all on BBQ Trailer and on the Chocolate Wheel, some good monies were made

both for Rotary and the Catholic Parish.

Quick Board Meeting held to discuss expenditure for some “fixes” to the BBQ trailer.

SO 5: Projects

5.4 Youth Service

5.6.1 Handicamp

Each year, the Youth Service Manager will seek nominations and select a suitable handicapped person and a buddy (helper) to attend the District Handicamp. The Club shall pay the associated fees.

5.6.2 RYLA, RYPEN, BREAKFAST CLUB

Each year, under the coordination of the Youth Service Manager, the Club will actively pursue nominations, and on selection pay the associated fees for the following:

o Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA); maximum of two selected participants

o Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN); maximum of two selected participants.

The Club shall make an annual donation towards the Gilmore College Breakfast Club.

5.6.3 Youth Exchange

The Club shall consider participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) on a year-by-year and case by case basis, under the coordination of the Youth Service Manager and on the recommendation of the Board. If participating, the Club will endeavour to alternate hosting students from the northern and southern hemisphere to provide a break between each program and provide a balanced exchange.

When the Club is successful in having an outbound student selected by the District Committee, the required Rotary student jacket/blazer shall be provided by the Club.

When the Club is hosting an inbound student:

o A club member is to be appointed as the student’s counsellor. It is the duty of the appointed club counsellor to ensure the inbound student is aware of this Standing Order.

o Under the direction of the Club Protection Officer, the ‘ District 9465 Working with Children

Manual’ shall be adhered to and current ‘Working with Children’ (WWC) card, as defined under The Working with Children Act, shall be obtained as appropriate.

o Where practicable, the student will be hosted for the first three months with experienced host

parents.

o The Club shall provide pocket money for the student equivalent to the sum recommended by the

District Youth Exchange Committee.

o Where the host school requires payment for school fees, books etc. these payments shall be met by

the Club.

o Other expenses e.g. sponsored or non-sponsored trips/tours requested of the Club, shall be

considered by the Board on a case-by-case basis.

o The Club will not accept liability for costs incurred by the inbound student without the Board's

consent.

o Exchange students are covered by Rotary’s Insurance Policy, but are not covered by Rotary’s

Insurance for any activity involving a motorized vehicle (e.g. driving, motorcycle riding, light aircraft flight).

o The student is required to attend District Conference and is encouraged to attend meetings of

the Club on a regular basis e.g. at least once a month; partners’ nights should also be attended by the student.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was actually never straight to begin with. The foundation began to sink when they started on the second floor. The tower's tilt began during construction in the 12th century, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight.

Project Director’s Report.

Foundation: PP Ian thanked members for their contributions to the ‘Soup Night’

last week.

Bread for the evening’s meal was kindly donated by Baker’s

Delight in Kwinana. Public Relations: We continue to receive exposure on Rotary Out West.

Next Bunnings Sausage Sizzle will be Thursday 8th November.

James will be away, and is looking for someone to take on his role on

the day.

Please continue to advise James of any stories or activities within our

club which may be submitted to the local media.

Community: • The St Vincent’s School Fete held last Sunday was a resounding

success, thanks to all who helped out on day.

• Permission has been granted finally to allow helpers to ride on the

outside of vehicles during the Lolly Run this Christmas.

• Tree Lopping will take place at 66 Summerton Road, mid Nov. date

and time TBA.

Vocational:

• Bob T has put together a grant application to assist Leah Urban who

is going to NASA next September, this application is progressing.

• Kwinana Industry Bus Trip on Monday 19th November is now

organised, seats all taken..

International:

Polio This Week 30th October 2018

Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners work all across the globe to ensure no child is paralyzed by polio ever again.

Stopping all poliovirus

Today, the three countries of focus are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan as they have never stopped transmission of endemic wild poliovirus. The countries are working to deliver vaccination services to their people, to carry out sensitive disease surveillance and to cooperate to immunize migrating populations across their common border. GPEI also supports countries that experience or are vulnerable to the rise of vaccine-derived polio viruses (VDPVs), which are rare and only occur when polio vaccination rates are low. When VDPV cases occur, high levels of vaccination, robust surveillance, and rapid outbreak response are critical.

Keeping the world safe

GPEI is also working to strengthen surveillance and immunization systems in the African and Eastern Mediterranean regions of the World Health Organization to ensure that polio has truly ended and immunity against the virus improves. In many countries of the world, surveillance against polio is maintained through the GPEI, and vaccination activities continue, to make sure children remain protected as long as there is polio anywhere.

Sausage Sizzles and Fundraising Opportunities

Bunnings sausage sizzles and cake stalls are enjoyed by thousands of Bunnings customers every week. These are valuable fundraising opportunities for local community groups, and all of the funds raised go straight to the community group conducting the fundraiser. Bunnings sausage sizzles are extremely popular and are typically booked out up to six months in advance. Our stores also provide community groups with the opportunity to host an awareness table in the foyer, which allows groups to talk to customers about their cause and fundraise.

Requests for sausage sizzles and fundraising opportunities should be made in writing on the community or charitable organisation’s original letterhead, and sent to your nearest Bunnings store, to the attention of the Activities Organiser

I grew up with parents who were willing to put themselves out for others in need and so I was

comfortable at a young age in giving without expecting anything in return. I learnt how the smallest acts

of kindness could change someone’s day for the better and put a smile on a stranger’s face.

Joining the Rotary world has allowed me to continue to help others in need and I still marvel at how the

effects of the simplest act of kindness can last forever.

Rotary is indeed a phenomenal and unique organisation consisting of members worldwide. There are no

boundaries, we have different backgrounds and different cultures, yet we come together as one to better

the lives of those in need. Rotary International President, Barry Rassin, has designed the 2018-19 theme

logo on this basis-how the oceans and skies connect continents to come together as one.

An example of this is the tireless work being undertaken by Rotary to eradicate Polio worldwide. A

challenge deemed impossible in the beginning is now so close it’s almost unbearable to hear of new

cases. As heart breaking as it is, eight new cases in two countries this year is a far cry from the

beginning.

As Bill Gates has said “we are achingly close to getting rid of Polio; more than 99% of the way.

Finishing the job is the big challenge, but it is very doable, if we keep up the effort.” Bill Gates believes

in our work and through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has extended the two-for-one funding

agreement for another three years.

I also believe in this worthy cause, so much that I have chosen to support the world-wide project during

my term as District Governor. I would like all Clubs and even individual members, to consider making a

donation to continue eradication efforts; don’t forget, we need to be Polio free for three years before we

can announce that, finally, the world is Polio Free.

To entice your contributions I have decided to do something a little extreme in anticipation of the funds

that will be raised. At the District Conference Governor’s Gala Dinner in Collie on Saturday 23 March

2019 I will shave my head. I trust this will be an incentive for you to support the Polio eradication

programme.

I look forward to the next twelve months and visiting all the

Clubs in District 9465 and I thank you in anticipation of the

continued good work you do as Rotarians.

drinks. Then we go see a show, let me tell you, Dorothy,

I enjoyed it so much I could have just died from pleasure!

So then we get back to my bungalow, and he turns into an ANIMAL.

Completely crazy, he tears off my expensive new dress and has his way with me twice!'

Dorothy: 'Goodness gracious!... so you are telling me I shouldn't go out with him?'

Edna: 'No, no, no... I'm just saying, wear an old dress.'

A man owned a small farm in Georgia. The Georgia State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent. "Well," replied the farmer, "there's my farm hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally."
