While Dick was the consummate Rotarian, having won numerous Rotary rewards and recognitions, he was first and foremost a family man. He would always say that the priorities were first, family, second business and, finally Rotary and he lived by that credo. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kay, who ably supported him in all his endeavors, two children, Kurt and Kristina, their spouses, Selina and Ron and three grandchildren. The only reason that Dick would take time from Rotary was to spend time with his grandchildren. He attended just about every soccer game, swim meet and track event. And Sunday was family day in the Lohmiller household. You can learn about all the community work and Rotary activities and recognitions that Dick received in the District Directory. Dear Rotarian Friends, When I accepted the role of District Governor, I never expected that in my second newsletter, I would have to announce the passing of my fellow Rotarian, friend, Advisor and Past District Governor, Dick Lohmiller. Dick lost a brief battle to cancer this Wednesday, July 29, at 4:25 pm. Dick wore a lot of hats in our District and we are just now starting to realize how many. GOOD BYE TO GARY CITTI’S YEAR

"THEY WERE ROASTED AND TOASTED" On July 9th the annual “Roast and Toast” was held at Saratoga Springs to congratulate and celebrate Gary Citti’s year as District Governor. The AG’s were present up front as the “Chorus that Roared” and added their “Lion Roar” to most of the comments made at the podium. Thank you to the “The “Grateful Dad’s “ who serenaded us with “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” as incoming District Governor Loren Harper presented Gary with two dozen red roses - one at a time. The Past District Governors and others spent time on the stage “dancing” to the music during the celebration. Dick Lohmiller hosted the event from his hospital bed dictating copious notes to Cecelia Babkirk prior to the event. Ron Sekkel, PDG as the Master of Ceremonies kept the evening on schedule. The PDG, DG and DGE pins, the Club banners and gavels, small and large, were exchanged. Thank you to everyone on the Roast and Toast Committee for making this a memorable evening!

ROTARACT NORTH AMERICAN HEMISPHERE CONFERENCE July 16th - 19th 2009

Rotaractors from countries and states around the world including Australia, Croatia, Aruba, India, Switzerland, Canada, Arkansas, Kansas, Montana, and California met at Doubletree Inn in San Jose for fellowship and forums. Friday night DGE Roger and Angie hosted a delicious dinner at their home in San Jose for about 70 students and ad-visors. Past International President M.A.T., Caparas spoke to the attendees on the role of Rotaract leadership and the important part they played in the relationship of Interactors and Rotarians in promoting peace and fellowship to the world. He also told the story of the current Polio Plus program and its beginnings in the Philippines with the raising of 6 million dollars. The convention concluded on Sunday with the presentation by PDG Jim Walker and DG Loren Harper of Paul Harris Fellowships to co-chairs Thai Chang and Jeff Beneford for the tremendous amount of work they did to put this successful conference together.

Membership Growth The single most important task we have in Rotary is the growth of membership. It all starts with membership. Without continued growth with new members in Rotary none of the other great programs that we do as Rotarians would be able to continue. The Rotary Foundation funds would slowly cease to exist and Rotarians could not carry on the great work we do throughout the world.

• Membership is not about a single drive at a single time to build your club back to the numbers you once were or would like to be, it is about doing it each and every day.

• The number one reason why people do not join Rotary is “They have never been asked”.

• Have your board approve buying complementary lunches for guest of Rotarians to introduce them to your club.

• Print up business size cards for these “free lunches” and pass them out to your members to encourage them to bring guests.

• When guests arrive, get their business card and develop a call back list to call them and invite them to the next meeting of your club.

• Print up a short synopsis of what your club does and what the financial obligations are of your members. You can make it in the form of a booklet as we have done in the Dublin Rotary Club or a simple one page hand out.

Continue to call these guests until they join your club or decide Rotary is not for them. You will increase your membership by more than 10% if you follow this short easy method. If you have some real energetic members in your club that really work it hard, you will double the size of your club. It can be done and has been done before, remember it only takes one person to make a difference in Rotary. Happy New Year!!!

As you all know, July 1st is the beginning of a new year with Rotary. With District Governor, Loren Harper, at the helm, I feel that we are going to be in for a very exciting year. Whenever I am faced with a new year, I feel that it is a time of reflection. I look back on those things that I accomplished (or didn’t accomplish) in the previous year and what I could have done differently. I will tell you that last year we had a net membership increase, something we were all a part of accomplishing. After looking at what worked and what didn’t in the previous year, I write down what I want to accomplish in the upcoming year (resolutions). I would ask you to set two “new years” resolutions in membership: • invite one new guest to Rotary • call someone you haven’t seen at Rotary for a couple of weeks to find out what is going on with them. Just those two simple things would have a phenomenal impact on your Club. In fact, why don’t you do it this month and just get it over with. When have you accomplished a resolution a couple of weeks after setting it? I am offering you the opportunity to do that now – invite one guest to Rotary

Superior Juvenile Court Judge Erica R. Yew spoke at the July 1st cabinet meeting on working with children at risk in the Juvenile Court System which is divided into three groups: birth to 5 years, 6 to 12 and teen years. Santa Clara court currently has 2,700 cases in their system. The parents of these children are typical victims themselves of violence and poor or non parental interaction plus drug addiction. The courts work with multiple discipline teams to help provide resources to these parents and children. This method has proven to be the most successful. The parent(s) are given six months to comply with the court programs before their children are removed from the family home. How can we help? The Juvenile Court Judges have compiled a list of items needed to help these children: Wish List for Juvenile Court Judges in Helping To Improve Outcomes for Families and Children in Foster Care (near) Necessities
