About Bijnor District

Bijnor, a unique place among the districts of the Western Uttar Pradesh is lying at thefoot of the Himalayas. In 1772 the Nawab of Oudhmade a treaty with the Rohillas butthe Rohilla chieftains cheated the Nawab. In 1774 the Nawab concluded a treaty ofalliance with the East India Companygovernment of Calcutta. In accordance with theterms mentioned in the treaty the East India Company had supplied a brigade to assisthim in enforcing his claims against the Rohillas. That led to the Rohilla War, the Rohillaswere driven beyond the Ganges, and Bijnor was incorporated in the territories of theNawab of Oudh, who in 1774 ceded it to the British East India. The British authority wasthere in the place until India got its independence and Bijnor as a separate district cameinto existence in November 1988. Sahu Ramesh Chandra Jain, a famous media person,philanthropist, promoter of India literature and leader of the worldwide Jain Communitywas born on 15th 1925 at Najibabad of the Bijnor District. During his life time he washonoured by two great awards- Honorary D.Lit by the Bundelkhand University and jh ansiHonour of Vidya Vachaspati by Gurukul Kangri University.

Geographically, the district lies between 29°37'N latitude, 78°14'E longitude and 223 maltitude. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,561 sq.km. and it issurrounded by Pauri Garhwal and Hardwar in the North, Moradabad in the South, Nainitaland Udham Singh Nagar in East and Saharanpur, Muzaffar Nagar and Meerut in the West.The two main rivers of the district are Ganga and Ramganga. The climate of the districtremains pleasant during the monsoon season. The district summer highest daytemperature is in between 25°C to 44°C.The actual rainfall in the district was 955.7 mmin the year of 2015-16.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 5 Sub-district Sardar, Chandpur, Dhampur,Nagina and Najibabad and 11 blocks . There are 2 Lok Sabha seats and 9 AssemblyConstituencies in the district.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 36,82,713 (persons) including19,21,215 (males) and 17,61,498 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 917 femalesfor every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth of the district was17.6% (persons) out of which 16.3 % (males) and 19.04 % (females). The major religionsof the district are Hindu and Muslim with 55.18% and 43.04 % of the total populationrespectively .

The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture. The chief crop of theagriculture of the district is sugarcane. There is also a Rural BPO in Bijnor which namedSookshm Information Services Pvt Ltd (SIS). It is founded by a team of professionalswho had worked for various MNCs (mostly BPO companies) and the Governmentagencies. In the year 2013-2014 the gross domestic product of the district was Rs .16,46,464 lakhs at current price.

The district has some well- known engineering institutions- North India Institute ofTechnology, Veera College of Engineering, Govt. I.T.I, Govt. Polytechnic College and R.V.Institute of Technology. The educational institutions running by the Educationalgroup named Lakshya Education Singapore is also good. As per 2011 census the literacyrate of the district is 68.48% (persons), 76.56% (males) and 59.72% (females).

Raashid Alvi, an eminent name among the politicians of India was born on 15th April 1956at Chanderpur, Bijnor. Earlier he was a member of Bahujan Samaj Party but later hejoined Indian National Congress. He served as a member of the Indian Parliament fromboth the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha .

The centres of attraction of the district which allures the travellers from far distanceplace. Mandawar Ka Mahal, a magnificent historical monument in Mandawar wasconstructed by Queen Victoria in 1850. Najibaudaulah's Fort in Najibabad was built byNajibudaulah aka Gulam Kadir. This age old fort stands even today. 'SenakaDawar' (Army's gate) in the village Saindwar of the district has a mythological touch. There is templeof Dronacharya, the tutor of the Pandavas. The Sita's Temple on the Chandpur-JalilpurRoad about one kilometre from Nanore village is also a place of interest for travellers. Itdoes not have any statue and is called popularly called as 'Sita Mandir Math'.Jahanabadis located on the bank of the river Ganges about one kilometre from Ganj.During the Mughal era, this village was a riyasat (princely state) with 101 villages. Someother prime temples and mosques in bijnor are Shiv Mandir, Chamunda Devi Mandir,Hanuman Mandir, Radha Krishna Mandir, Jama Majid, Markaz Majid, TeliWali Majid,BaharWali Majid and Peer Baba.
