Jhunjhunun is the part of Shekhawati region. Jhunjhunun was ruled over by the ChauhanDynasty in the Vikram era 1045. In 1450 Mohammed Khan Qaimkhani and his son SamasKhan defeated the Chauhans and conquered Jhunjhunun. Qaimkhani ruled the region till1730. Nawabs ruled over there 280 years. Mohammed Khan was the first Nawab andRohilla was the last Nawab of Jhunjhunun.

Geographically, the district extends to a geographical area of 5,928 sq km and on basisof this size ranks 21st in the State and 174 th in India. As per data recorded in the year2015 , the forest area covers 3.26% of the total geographical area of the district. Of itslarge area, 675.54 sq km is demarcated as a waste land, which cannot be used for anykind of agricultural or industrial activity. It lies at 28°13'N latitude, 75 °40'E longitude and323 m altitude. It is bounded by Haryana on North -East and East, by Sikar district onSouth-East, South and South-West and by Churu district on North-East and North. Theactual rainfall in the district was 469.9 mm in the year of 2015-16.

Administrative wise, the district divided in to 6 sub-districts, 18 towns and 927 villages.Its district Headquarters is at Jhunjhunun which is located at a distance of 176 km fromthe State Capital. There are 1 parliamentary and 7 assembly constituencies in thedistrict.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of3,83,664 households with a total of 21,37,045 out of which 10,95,896 are males and10,41,149 are females, causing it to rank 12th in the State and 214 th in India. Thepopulation growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 11.67 % including 11.43%were males and 11.93 % were females. The density of population of the district is 361persons per sq km. The sex ratio is 950 females per 1000 males while the child ratiostands at 837 females per 1000 males. The percentage of Schedule Caste is 2.95 %. Thepercentage of Schedule Tribe is 0.45%. The major religions in the district are Hindu at89.17% and Muslim at 10.68% of the total population.

Economic wise, Agriculture is the main source of income of the people. The district hasfamous copper mines in Khatri tehsil. The Khatri copper complex of Hindustan CopperLimited is situated at distance of 10 km from the Khetri town. It also has by products forinstance sulfuric, Acid and Fertilizers etc. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Productduring 2011-12 was Rs 10,71,158 lakh at Current Price and Rs 7,18,732 lakh at Constant(2004-05) Prices. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during 2011-12 was Rs9,76,370 lakh at Current Price and Rs 6,30,657 lakh at Constant (2004-05) Prices. ThePer Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during 2011-12 was Rs.42,086 at CurrentPrice and Rs 27,184 at Constant (2004-05) Prices.

About Jhunjhunun District


Santosh Ahlawat is a famous politician from there. He is also the current member of LokSabha. He belongs to Bharitiya Janta Party. Another famous political leader is KamlaBeniwal from Congress.

According to 2011 census, the percentage of literate persons is 74.13% persons, ofwhich 86.9 % are males and 60.95 % are females. The total literate population of thedistrict is 13,70,360 persons, of which 8,15,834 are males and 5,54,526 are females. Thetotal number of illiterate persons is pegged at 7,66,685 out of which 2,80,062 are malesand 4,86,623 are females. The district has a numbers of educational institutes includingShri Jagdish Jhabarmal Tiberwala University, Shridhar University, Jhunjhunun AcademySchool and Keystone Group of Institutions.

Some of the important tourist places of the district are Rani Sati Temple, KamruddinShah's Dargah, Sone Chandiki Haveli, Kanoria Haveli, Ganeriwal Haveli, Aath Havelis, AjitSagar, Birdi Chand Well, Mukundgarh Fort, Forsterganj - A British Establishment,Badalgarh Fort, MertanijikiBaori, KhetriMahal, Zorawargarh, Shekhawat Rajput's Chhatris,The Modi and Tiberwala Haveli. In the year of 2015, 37,420 foreign tourists and 86,555domestic tourists visited these places.

The region has famous personalities from various fields such as Mehandi Hasan (Singer),Ghanshyam Das Birla (Industrialist) and Kiran Shekhawat (Pilot). The Parasi, Piramals, theChandaks and the Birla family are prominent Indian Industrialists, hail from the district.
