About Chitrakoot District
Chitrakoot is a district of Uttar Pradesh with its adminis trative headquarters located atChitrakoot town. The term Chitrakoot means the 'Hill of many wonders'. Chitrakoot lies inthe Northern Vindhya Range of mountains. According to Valmiki Ramayana, it is an abodeof many great sages with a huge variety of flora and fauna. The two great sages of thisplace are namely Valmiki and Bharadwaj. There is a mythological story associated withthis place. During the exile of Lord Rama it was advised to him to stay and take rest inthis place since the place has the quality of relieving a person from worldly desires andpains. Then Lord Rama also admitted this fact. A new district was carved out on 6th May1997 from the earlier Banda district consisting of its two tehsils namely Karwi and Mau.Previously , Chitrakoot district was popularly known as Chhatrapati Shahuji Nagardistrict. Finally, on 4th September 1998 the district was emerged as a separate district inthe map of Uttar Pradesh and moreover, on the same date it was also renamed asChitrakoot, the present name.
